PS3 owners won't pay for online services, says Kutaragi

Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi has stated that while the company expects to earn healthy revenues from the sale of downloadable content for the PS3, there will be no charge for basic online services.

In an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch, Kutaragi said: "You can't charge money for network matching and other basic services. These things are just taken for granted on the PC."

You don't repeat facts, you repeat rumors from pro-MS blogs with no proof, and then say that if anyone has proof, that they have to present it and prove you wrong. I've already told you that the Toy Story thing was NOT Sony, that was a MS exec who said that. The Killzone and HDMI ones I'll give you, but the others are still just rumors. The "delaystation" is not nearly as bad as the numerous Windows products that are always delayed, as with the current delay for Vista. That is the same type of delay as with the Playstation 3, and is just as inexcusable as the Sony delay (or you could just realize like most rational people that delays do happen in the technology industry and that it's to be expected).

The low CPU yields is a rumor. The online can easily be done for free. I play Half Life 2 on my PC often and have never paid for that. There's Counter Strike, Fear, Battlefield 2, etc, etc, etc. Don't be mad that you're paying for something that PC users still get for free, with the exception of most MMO's like World of Warcraft and Everquest series (which you would still have to pay additional for on Xbox live if it ever came there, in all probability). Have fun paying over $250 ($50 x 5 years = $250) to play games online, plus having to pay for "premium content" like an extra level in Oblivion, or a suit of horse armor. I'll be playing for free, with the option of paying for the extra level or the extra things that are optional.

I think people are taking the words out of context. Sony is not labeling their services basic and not basic. They are saying that having a gaming network brings basic functionality to gaming this would be things like downloading demos and playing and that they will not charge for such things as MS does. In other words. He is saying Live Gold offers basic services which we will give for free. Stop taking the word basic out of it's original context.

Also about the bad news. Most if not all of the bad "news" is FUD created by anonymous authors and MS execs implied views. Anyone can write a blog entry saying "PS3 controller melts and burns your hands", would you label that ridiculous piece of untrue information, news? Well many at webblogs and qj.net would. Be cautious reading articles like this. Blog Posters are less incline to do research and be professional before posting a bit of information. Rumors are what rule in blogs and anyone can start one of those:

"did you hear that Miyamoto sent his resume to Sony after the introduction to the Wii, Does this mean we'll see Mario on the PS3?"

Of course if you're a young gullible boy/girl you will use this rumor as a fact in an argument that Sony will destroy Nintendo as the Xbox fanboys have done everytime a RUMOR starts about the PS3. Think critically or else you just sound like a ignorant fanboy.

Im a playstation gamer, but i own an xbox. There are things about xbox i really like. I think xbox live is great, and i love halo. But as far as the xbox 360 goes, i have no respect it for numerous reasons. Mainly because to me, the xbox 360 has offered me nothing new to my gaming experience, nothing new over the ps3 or even the old xbox. You can mention xbox live. But that's not new. The old xbox did it. This is my opinion of course, but i think of the xbox 360 this way:

-a system that has made no technolical leaps and has not tried to make any great strides in advancement, just so they could get on the market first, because thats how microsoft thought they would win. Microsoft played it 'safe' on how they designed their new console because they wanted to create a cheapish machine that will be on the market before the ps3. And the rashness of design is evident when the machine is not completely backwards compatible and there were people saying their machines overheated (i dont care if yours didnt). And thats why i dont respect microsoft

But as gamer, i fail to see why you have NOTHING positive to say about sony. Of course they've made their mistakes, but they've also taken the risk to endeavor to create a fantastic console that is packed with great features, software and hardware. But you never have ANYTHING good to say about sony. I've always held a few good points for microsoft, like live because i know its good. But you are the epitomy of a fanboy, who is just too blind to see a company that tries to make advancements in the industry. Open your eyes

Xbox titles arent fully back compat because the xbox used an intel cpu and the 360 uses an ibm processor. IBM is a competitor with intel. THIS and this alone is the reason why. -Pre-installed blu-ray drive. I know you will have some bad points to bring up about the blu-ray drive, but its tecnologically better than a dvd drive and a HD-DVD drive in every way, shape and form.

-Seamlessly intergrating the psp with the ps3. That's cool. There's alot of potential with that, and if you dis this point, then u truely are an absolute moron. I cant see anything thats bad about this idea.

-Free online gameplay. PC's do it. Why cant PS3? Why do you have to pay online for the xbox? Why is microsoft taking more of your money when they don't need it?

$50/per year x 5 years (average life of a console) = $250.00. That is $250.00 that PC gamers and PS3 gamers will not have to spend to play online. That is also $250 in addition to the monthly charge that you already have to pay for your cable modem/dsl/T1 etc. Then, if you want to use wireless internet you have to buy a $100 wireless adapter.

That basic package will allow you to download demo's, trailer etc but not to play your games online I bet.

It cost millions of pounds to maintain, run and update X-Box Live, hence why we get charged. Sony are going to throw millions of pounds a year to offer FREE online gaming. Somehow I can't see that happening, but I will be very surprised if I do!

He's Gloming onto the same thing Bill Gates said a couple of years ago about the 360. And I think we need vastly larger HDD to store games, hell I own 24 games for my 360 already and at even 4 GB a piece that is already about 80 GB for those alone not to mention caching space, XBL Arcade games. I would love to download games, but it would kill used game trading because it is your right to sell you license to a game (via the packaging and media) to recoup some money. This would be null and void because I am sure it would be hard to trade games with downloads.

As mentioned in my previous post, you are repeating a rumor about bad CPU yields, it was delayed ONE TIME from Spring 2006 to November 17, 2006; and the hardware will not be old in November. The RSX is still apparently blowing away a 7900 GTX in SLI, the cell is running rings around any processor that they've tested it against. The Mt. St. Helens realtime flyover at 30 fps being rendered in real-time was especially impressive, considering a top of the line Mac G5 was chugging at 4-5 fps. There are numerous other tech articles that have been written about it, I suggest you read up on it before you knock a processor that the military is looking at using for various applications and that the scientific community is going nuts over.

The entire game industry is holding its breath and rooting for Sony to pull off what they are saying the PS3 can. Also, lots of movie studios, burned by UMD, are holding THEIR breath that Blu-ray pans out. Sony has a lot to lose, and so does everyone who plays games and loves movies, if the PS3 "fails." I doubt that the PS3 will fail in the classic sense, but have they put their chances of leading hardware sales in the next generation in jeopardy? You betcha. Look at the polls from Japan. It used to be that all Japanese gamers were waiting for and wanting a PS3. Now it is the Wii that most Japanese gamers are saying they want the most. Sony HAS lied over and over, and it's not just Xbox fanboys who are noticing, because I don't think that there are many of them in Japan! LOL! But the fact of the matter is, PS3 gameplay online will not be free. It will be up to the game publisher if they want to charge for it, etc., just like with the PS2. I live in Washington State, and M$ is building a new server farm in Quincy, WA, located right in the middle of the state. Why not over in Redmond where M$ is headquartered? The price of building construction and the cost of electricity is far less in central Wa., (Grand Coulee Dam) that's why. The server farm, for xbox live and msn, is expected to use half a million in electricity EVERY MONTH. On Sony's side, who is paying for this?

Most of the kids who post pro Sony here do not really realize how detailed production, distribution, and cost of the services offered for online gaming are. I realize that most of the Sony fan base still probably believes that Santa clause is real too. So it would not be hard to deceive them, and as you can see it is working and Sony is happy with that. I talked to some kids who have never played a 360 anywhere or seen one but they are convinced that it will blow up. Why do they believe this? Because the people from age 16-30 who are Xbox haters are lying to them. “Leis” is not fair right. So you know what I did I invited all 10 of them to my home to play 360. We played for about 5 hours and they had a blast man. I also use a HD projector instead of a HD TV. So that really blew them away. I am 24 years old, games consoles are made for families and kids to enjoy. All the lies take away from that, the kids do not care about a console war they care about having fun. None of those kids knew about processors or Blue Ray more did they care. But one of the older kids asked how much did the PS3 cost I told him $500.00 - $600.00 his jaw dropped. I told him the price of a 360 at $300.00 - $400.00 and he asked why the PS3 cost more. I could not find a way to explain to him that Sony could offer the PS3 at the same cost of the 360 if there was not BR drive. So I just told him Sony is having some small problems that we hope will get worked out. See I could have said Sony is trying to rip you off for the sake of winning a HD DVD format war but I did not Because I am a gamer not a fan boy. You fan boys are Idol worshipers.

They've said if online multiplayer games demand a price then they will get it. They can say it's free all they want but their service is still the same as free xbox live silver. And trust me you have no idea how costly and hard it is to run a good online service, ohh yes you will pay.

better compression means blu-ray is not needed. no one has to buy the hd-dvd add-on if they don't want to. they are not FORCED to have it. how do you know blu-ray will become standard? i don't see either format doing that until all studios support one or the other. i can't wait to talk to you again when you are paying a separate fee to play each game you have online. and when the general public decides that they are still fine with dvd, and your built in forced blu-ray drive is obsolete because everyone is using digital distribution. i know a lot of people that play socom online. well let's just say it as sony fans do. because socom is the only non sports title worth playing online for ps2. if you want something decent to play online you HAD to buy socom.(see how stupid that sounds? socom sucks to me anyway, give me ghost recon any day). i have absolutely no doubt that the ps3 will sell very well, but it will not be the 2nd coming. the only difference that matters between the systems is exclusive titles and which ones you prefer.

I can see your reasoning and it seems sound except....if you were to count how many games the PS2 had by the time Xbox launched, took them out of the equation, and counted the total games each, Sony would still come out on top. Just because the 360 launched first, doesn't guarentee it to be "physically ahead", as you so eloquently put it. The PS2 had greater developer support, thus more games. I'm sure that there were many a game that were created by U.S./Europe developers that never made it to Japan, but there were a far greater number of Japanese titles that never left the island. Yeah, most of them either sucked, were too quirky, too culture dependent, or would have required too much work to make a proper transition to U.S./European consumers. Which brings me to my second point, it ain't about the quantity, it's about the quality. There were some games that were so horrendous that I could probably get both 360 fans and PS3 fans to agree for once.

the ps3 is having the same burn problem even now, they havent even had a single fully functional ps3 made yet that works without overheating. E3?-that was a computer in a ps3 shell to make it look like a ps3. so far theyve been having to degrade parts to try and keep it from overheating, (still not working though, lol). and on top of that, the 360s were not the only cause for fires if u actually look it up (hint: some houses have circuits that'll burn if too many certain power-demanding devices such as computers, laptops, and obviously 360s are all attached.

With Xbox Live Gold, online gaming isn't free because Microsoft provides game developers the tools for everything that is needed to make a multi-player game. The developers don't have to worry about concentrating on an infrastructure because it's already there. All they have to do is apply. As for the PS3, Sony leaves it up to the developers to do all of the work of building just like things were with the PS2. It's up to the developers to decide whether a game will be online. As far as Xbox360 games, it is a requirement. I just don't see where Sony is going with this. If you read carefully the comment says that there will be no charge for basic online service. If I were to take that comment as a grain of salt, I would consider myself naive. Xbox Live is a closed network, and that says alot.

Seriously all this speculation crap happens for every system and its getting really old, i heard the same crap before the 360 came out. ALL systems have minor problems months prior to launch. Kutaragi-san ish proclaiming free network gaming, I'm not sure I buy into that. The only way I could see it is if Sony forced their "online storage" business model on consumers in some way. If I have a PS3 with a 60gig HD..why would I want to use sony's online storage? I think this is the Key to all of Sony's plans. Lets be real..Gaming servers cost money...If sony wants to recoup what is sure to be a HUGE loss with PS3 launch they need to make money in anyway they can. That's why the "FREE GAMING" thing really doesn't make sense to anyone who really thinks about it. They won't make enough money with a $2.00 content download here and there. Something about PS3 online is gonna have to make up for the cost of running and maintaining servers. Because especially with the huge losses at launch for SCE they can't afford to take on any additional costs. There's a catch...and I believe its the ONLINE storage servers Kutaragi-san has mentioned.

I would like to say though...if I pay for something I want to own it...not license it from sony...that's where this "online storage" is gonna lead to. That's probably what that patent sony has is for, not used games..but downloadable games/content. I refuse to pay $59.99 for the right to play a game as long as I'm registered to Sony online. If I pay for a game...them its mine. Just thought I'd mention that...because I strongly disagree with that practice.

As for the online beeing free, that's possible. Sony will only run their service and not games on a central server. The game servers will run the publishers and in the past we never had to pay for it.

Most of the kids who post pro Sony here do not really realize how detailed production, distribution, and cost of the services offered for online gaming are. I realize that most of the Sony fan base still probably believes that Santa clause is real too. So it would not be hard to deceive them, and as you can see it is working and Sony is happy with that. I talked to some kids who have never played a 360 anywhere or seen one but they are convinced that it will blow up. Why do they believe this? Because the people from age 16-30 who are Xbox haters are lying to them. “Leis” is not fair right. So you know what I did I invited all 10 of them to my home to play 360. We played for about 5 hours and they had a blast man. I also use a HD projector instead of a HD TV. So that really blew them away. I am 24 years old, games consoles are made for families and kids to enjoy. All the lies take away from that, the kids do not care about a console war they care about having fun. None of those kids knew about processors or Blue Ray more did they care. But one of the older kids asked how much did the PS3 cost I told him $500.00 - $600.00 his jaw dropped. I told him the price of a 360 at $300.00 - $400.00 and he asked why the PS3 cost more. I could not find a way to explain to him that Sony could offer the PS3 at the same cost of the 360 if there was not BR drive. So I just told him Sony is having some small problems that we hope will get worked out. See I could have said Sony is trying to rip you off for the sake of winning a HD DVD format war but I did not Because I am a gamer not a fan boy. You fan boys are Idol worshipers.

BR is an awesome piece of tech. Don’t get me wrong but dev. need a console in your living room to make cash. Dev. do not care what format a game is on they want to make money. If PS3 is a failure due to Blue Ray they (Sony) will simply move back to DVD 9. You do not need research to use common sense. Dev. Like Blue Ray in the development process because it is space saving. When Oblivion was being developed it was on 4 DVD 9’s but after it was completed it was compressed to 5 gigs.
