Now there are going to almost certainly be issues with firmware upgrades and is one of the reason why you shouldn't be upgrading it to often because there is a risk.

With that said, to dismiss issues simply because you didn't experience it is plain ignorance or fanboyism. The source points to the official Playstation forum, I mean these are the people that owns and use PS3s. You couldn't get any better source than the users reporting it themselves in public.

Now it might not be as widespread as the article suggest and some of them might not even be caused by the firmware, but it baffles me when people just plainly ignore it.

By the way, is it me or is Nintendo the only one I haven't heard any issues with firmware updates?

and right now I'm only playing Fallout 3 so I can't comment on any other games but since the update load times have increased and the game locks up almost every time I enter or exit a building. If I wait for about 30-60s the game will unfreeze. I've had my fatty since dec 06 and have been playing Fallout 3 exclusively for the past month. Before the udpdate the game would lock up about once every 8 hours or so.

Weak article. Every firmware update sees SOMEONE saying it bricked their console-whether it's the PS3,Wii or 360 or PSP-and I on't doubt sometimes it's even near to the truth but trying to make this out from a few isolated forum posts(and if I'd bricked my own console for some reason of my own making I would be happy enough if a reason I could blame it on happened along, no? What's to stop someone who already had PS3 issues from blaming it on this? None-and I feel it often happens that a couple of genuine worries get jumped on by people hoping they can blame the manufacturers for their own failings.

I call this story fake and whack. First of all, the update has been live since April the 1st. So why would users complain about their PS3's dying DAYS after the update. Hell, I had my Sirius radio get f'ed up after an update...

After doing the mandatory install to my launch 60 gig PS3, everything was fine until the next day when I turned on the PS3. After loading up to the xmb, the PS3 simply shut off. After turning it back on, same thing... it just shuts off, no beeps just a flashing red light.

I called tech support.
After speaking to someone who initially informed me that "we can fix this" issue, he soon retracted that statement and said it was a power issue and I would have to send it in for repairs @ $150.00 + s/h or trade it in on a "re-certified" slim PS3 @ $119.00 + s/h. Of course either way I would LOSE EVERYTHING on my hard drive! Unacceptable.

I decided to troubleshoot myself:
First I downloaded via PC the 3.21 update to a compact flash card. Then I forced my PS3 into safe mode. (I say forced because it took several try's due to the unit shutting off too quickly) Once in safe mode, I re-installed the 3.21 update from the CF card and WHAM...PS3 works fine again. (some power issue huh!)

Problem is, after a few days, it will happen all over again. I repeat the process to get my PS3 functioning again only to have it revert to shutting down a few days later. What up SONY? Why has my PS3 worked flawlessly since launch and the very next day after the 3.21 update my PS3 seems determined to brick. 3...2...1...brick. I think I just figured out the meaning of the 3.21 update!

Anyone else with this same issue after installing the 3.21 update?

I updated my 40 gig. No problems. Although one example doesn't say much I doubt the issue is as widespread as the internet would have anyone believe. The most internet savvy, a minority of internet users, generally are the most loud.

Honestly though...I've never had a problem updating firmware for ANY console (knocks on wood). My former Blackberry (Storm) is probably the only exception in regards to botched firmware updates.

I doubt Sony will lose much if any money in law suits considering I read somewhere recently on the ps forums a section from the usage agreement that they can cancel some services or something at any time.

I have a friends too, some with PS3 some with xbox 360. One of my friends got both, a launch 360 and a PS3 who was bought used and broke down after 3 days, he got a new for free. I got another one with only 360's, he got about 4, only 1 working. Another one with only PS3, his fat one broke down, no warranty, so he bought a slim instead.

My point? All hardware breaks down, however i think the 360 (as of now, not launch) is a bit more unstable than the PS3.

Xbox 360 hardware quality is in no way equivalent to PS3 hardware quality. An Xbox 360 is just less reliable (meaning "more likely to breakdown")than a PS3, pure and simple. That is an objective fact. That doesn't mean that a 360 is better or worse than a PS3 because reliability is not the only factor to consider. However, it is misleading to imply that a PS3 and an Xbox 360 have about the same degree of reliability.

@ RuPaul: Well, I bought a launchday 360 that got replaced and later on the replacement got replaced. I then got a 60gb fatty two years ago and it's still sexing up my days and working just fine. Personal experiences are irrelevant on the greater whole, but I'm sure large scale statistics would show that it's the 360 consoles that have been the most prone to breaking down, not the ps3.

Can you imagine if MS did this, it would be front page news on every game site, the headline would read "Evil Lying Microsoft completely screws consumers yet again" BUT since its sony only the most obscure of sites have the balls to report it.

If you really want to know the quality of the PS3, hangout on the official PS3 forums, PS3 is not a whole lot more reliable than the 360 when you do a little research. The only difference is, Sony makes you pay for the repairs and replacements, while MS just covers it under warranty extensions.

^.... you are very fortunate. I personally know one other who has a workin launch 360 (and it is not been taken very good care of). Us, we take very good care of our electronics (still have working intellivsion, SNES, N64, PS, PS2 models) and I am on my 3rd launch 360

Anytime a 360 article about RRoD pops up, you get people talkin' about their launch 360 hasn't had any problems. The early posts I read in this thread reminded me of that.

I've actually had to send in my 360 numerous times. MS has taken care of me though every single time. I was never charged though, even though the first time I think I was out of warranty (before they extended it to three years). They've compensated me with games and various accessories as well.

I still have a fat PS3 which I have yet to update. Just seeing stuff like this worries me. I've had the problems with my 360, and some of my online friends have had problems with their PS3s (not with this update though). I would really hate to have something happen to it because I like the look of the fat PS3 a lot more than the slim.

These reports come out on every single firmware upgrade. I am guessing it is due to interruptions in the installation process, and not the firmware itself. There is inherit risk in updating firmware on a computer. A process is created to minimize risk, but risk remains if anything interrupts that process. It is logical to conclude that two exact devices with the exact same hardware, and exact same firmware update leaves one working and the other not...it is probably not the firmware itself being a problem, but something gone wrong in the installation of that firmware.

Things have definitely reversed. While the 360's problems have been long gone, the Ps3's are starting to show their ugly head. Almost everybody I know has started getting the YLOD's. Sucks for you guys that you have to pay $150 to get it fixed.

I guess I'll try the usb method or open up some ports, but other than that the past few days I couldn't simply update my damn slim T_T

I love how people jump into these kinds of articles and call BS because they updated and didn't have any problems. I used to say that until a firmware update bricked my 360. I have no doubts that some firmware updates kill some consoles, and the PS3 is no exception. No two people have the same mix of installed games, game saves, etc. And all it takes sometimes is the right combination.

Sounds like alot of bs to me, if your 360 brink because of a update, it might be do to the fact that Microsoft Game Studios isn't as good as Microsoft themselfs.

Plus another thing to keep in mind, is that they haven't had much luck at having their systems not having hardware problems Vs Sony's fixing the problem.

Sony fix it as soon as it became a problem and Microsoft so far has said they fix it, but I keep hearing about peoples 360's RROD or just having hardware problems. Another thing is that the DVD drive in the 360 is cheaply made an can grid your games like notthing.

Yes PS2 has problems, what system doesn't? But at least Sony has been going about fixing problems then Microsoft Game Studio has.

Maybe from a handful of people who really have a problem after a firmware update? What blows it out of proportion is when it gets posted here and people start griping that because it didn't happen to them it can't possibly be real.

Sometimes an update fails to install properly and a console can fail to start afterward. Not like it's a new thing people are making up. It's been happening to PC's since people gained the ability to flash their own BIOS. But so many seem to be concerned about damage control when it comes to their beloved video game consoles.

Microsoft's Spring 2007 firmware update killed my 360. It was working, I updated, it red-ringed. As a result I now wait a couple of weeks before applying any firmware updates to my consoles because I know it can happen. Hopefully it never happens to you.

I know firmware can sometimes mess up but not with the big inflated numbers that get thrown around. This is just some retards that think if they post this story on N4G, then people will see it and say "OH NO! I better get rid of my PS3 and get a 360 instead!". I don~t think this is fake because I lost my blu-ray disk drive after playing FF13 with the new FW update.

What it is funny and curious too is that all the |PS3 that are having problem with FF13 or other games all players were using a Fat PS3.

It is not worth to fix my PS3 so I am getting a PS3 SLIM next week and I hope that with it I can play FF13 to get a plat trophy on this game.

Was wondering if Sony is killing Fat PS3 by purpose so they go asap to buy a new PS3 SLIM because we all want to play God of War 3, HR or FF13.

however lucky me had a 3 years warranty christmas offer when i bought the ps3 so they exchanged with a refurb ... not sure if it's the firmware or not but i played for while b4 it YLODed.

i also had a bluray fail on exactly 1 year from the time i bought my ps3 ! so this is my 3rd console :S ...

ironically i don't turn on my 360 that much coz i was scared it RROD so i barely use it and i am still on console 1 :P !

I've got a problem with my BluRay drive since I updated to the new firmware. Sometimes I insert a disc and the PS3 didnt' recognize it. Before the update I've had no problem with this, and now it happens. First I was thinking that my PS3 was to old already, but then I've seen this article and man, you saved my day! I hope Sony fix the problems as soon as possible.

I bought my 60 on midnight (sony style store nyc) Over the years when I web browse it was prone to occasional freezes. Post update it freezes every-time. Gameplay wise though, no issues at all.

Users reporting these issues on the playstation forum have all 1, 2, 3 posts and are all from Usa.and look how the vast majority of people already on the board didn't have any problems. no issues reported by European or Japanese users….mhh maybe Sony hate American people or we can imagine where these stories come from,obviously. Now the store is looking into it (see if they can fix it, I don't think they can). Before they send it out to Sony, i think.
