It is however interesting to note that 360 games are beginning to exceed past DVD9's.

The problem is that MS could have never put in Blu Ray to begin with: their whole goal is to be the cheaper alternative. If MS launched with Blu Ray the only thing they would have got them going was Halo. The fact that PS3 was so expensive was what screwed Sony from people adopting their console early and only now do we such a spike in PS3 sales. If MS had Blu Ray they would be just as expensive and that would have made their struggle to gain a foothold in the industry even harder.

I wouldn't say MS NEEDS Blu Ray, but I'm sure that if the Xbox 1 was successful enough and significant enough to gain a strong audience MS *could* have supported Blu Ray with much more confidence. But supporting Blu Ray would have simply drove up the price and I think for MS it was much smarter for them to be the cheaper alternative to Sony.

MS doesn't need Blu Ray, but they sure as hell would benefit from it now and I'm sure some part of them regrets it.

The one thing I fault with Blu Ray tech is that the focus on graphics is so strong that, especially with MP games content is always lost or forgotten because graphics tax the hardware too much. For example while Halo 3 certainly wasn't the best looking game it is easily, to this day, the best packaged experience. Killzone 2 could never do split screen, for example, and the focus of working on the graphics engine was so great that it lacked modes and options in comparison to Halo 3. In this regard I find that if graphics are pursued it can lead to games suffering in more important categories like gameplay. Look at San Andreas to GTA IV and all that content that was dropped. #4 is pretty but I still prefer the sheer variety of San Andreas.

Anyways, I don't care too much for graphics or the capabilities of Blu Ray though I am constantly stunned with what developers are doing in titles like God of War and Uncharted

they dont need bluray. Heres why:

1. The majority of their games are on 1 dvd. This makes life easier for dev that dont want to spend as much money or work as hard to make actual next gen games. Its like this, make a spruced up PS2/XBOX type game, market it as the greatest thing ever, talk bad about competition, voila!

2. The western media is on their side. They can make a corny @ss game on dvd and they will rate it a 9 or 10. Western media wants western console to win and finally step out the japanese shadow (for the most part they are doing it very well). Why do I say this. FFXIII got an equal score for both systems. Certain sites give GOWIII low scores. Over some bullshit. So modern glitchfare 2 looks better than GOW......... REALLY?????

3. People are actually falling for the "it isnt needed this gen" bullsh!t they are saying. I dunno about you guys, but as far as consoles go (yea pc is more advanced, we get it, now shut up), I would rather have the most advanced one. PS3 exclusive sh!t on anything 360 has. Sorry but its true. Not saying that 360 doesnt have one good game, in my humble opinion of course, (Splinter Cell Conviction, but that it really). At the end its all about West vs East. Americans (and most western countries) want the Western game system that is made in AMERICASZ to beat the big bad Japanese guys. One guy actually told me to buy American at a gamestop. I could have sworn that 360 is made in china and other parts of the world, just like PS3.

I agree there is 0 chance of bluray on the 360, it's too late for that.

But Sony won't be stopping Microsoft from adopting blu-ray in the future and won't rip them off on the fees either. There is a separate JV company that handles licensing and the fees are set. Last I saw it was $9.50 for a player. I think that covered all the licensing except perhaps with the exception of Java, that might be separate, I don't know.

MS has no valid excuse for not adopting Bluray in the next Xbox. Unless they really believe that in just a few years ISPs will suddenly be providing super high speed internet to everyone at reasonable cost with no download limits. I'm not holding my breath waiting for that.

I'd love for the 360 to have some type of HD attachment. I even hate downloading things to my HD on my PS3, let alone something that takes gigs and gigs to use.

I also hate downloading games that I buy because I CAN'T RESELL THEM; they're just some digital imprint on my NDD that I cannot sell; unless I sell everything and get a new HDD.

-Selling a rare game for $400? forget about it; won't happen.
-Trading a game for a game to a friend? Nope.
-Interesting art designs for the covers, discs, and booklets? Extinct.
-Bringing a game over to play for Thanksgiving while the womenfolk are cooking up delightful treats? Nada.
-giving a game to a kid and watching him cheer while he opens it up on Xmas? Not if you have to download it.

Not to mention that if the HDD or console goes belly-up, you'll be gameless, and not even able to play your HDD games on another console.

Those are a few reasons why I'm a advocate of physical media. I'm not knocking downloads, but I see the freedom and sense of having physical media, and I see no advantages over a Blu-Ray or disc versus having all of my games on a HDD.

@1.16 The 360 is only holding its own with multiplatforms game, but when it comes to exclusives the 360 is way behind atm, even alot of multiplatform games get trampled going up against some the ps3's exclusives.

However for most ps3 exclusives blu ray is needed, gow 3 is 35 or 45 gigs, i think that proves blu ray is needed for ps3 exclusives right there, it's a non issue for the 360, since it wouldn't be used for games.

Blu-ray has offered no advantage in graphics in any way. Crysis still looks better than any game and now Alan Wake and Metro 2033 look better than any PS3 game and they all use DVD.

The only advantage Blu-ray has is space. However on the PS3 with the slow drive speed gimps that because many (MANY) PS3 games have mandatory installs.

Obviously you are not well informed as to the merits of blu-ray. First off it is not dieing, in february alone blu ray media sold more than all the downloaded movies for all of 2009. Secondly bluray capacity can already do 66gb on a dual layer, and can go to 500gb+. Expect the PS4 to support at least 100gb Bluray. Try downloading that in a reasonable time :)

As for the "slow" bluray drive in the PS3, it is about the same speed as the "fast" DVD drive in the Xbox. The DVD average read is about 10.5MBps versus about 9MBps for the bluray drive in the PS3. The bluray read speed is constant but the DVD read speed varies depending on where on the disk the data is stored, so it can be faster or slower than the average. Also the second DVD layer can only be read at an average of about 6.5MBps.

So when they create the games on DVD they try to put the important stuff on the sections of the disk where they can approach the maximum speed. That helps give a better load time, that and there is just a lot less data to deal with.

Current and future bluray drives are many times faster than the fastest DVD drive. The PS3 drive is only 2x. By the time the PS4 ships you can expect at least a 4x as there are already 12x drives now. But there is an upper limit for both formats and that is because once you get over a certain angular velocity the disks start to wobble. That is a bad thing and not easily fixable given the current physical media format. They would need to be made thicker and stiffer to withstand higher rotational speeds. But then we could end up with the same noise issue as the XBox if they go for a high speed drive.

Sony sells PCs with windows and Microsoft sells software that supports DVDs and CDs so that probably requires some sort of license, which will mean money in Sonys pocket as they have patents for both media formats.

Actually I've sat in a lot of board rooms evaluating decisions just like this. You chose to ignore the second part of my statement. It has to make business sense. If you will make money then you will pay the required royalties and licensing fees. If you can't then you won't.

tech companies pay each other royalties all the time. They work out patent cross licensing agreements with competitors all the time as well. It just makes business sense. You seem to believe that businesses should be run based on emotions.

Samsung and Toshiba are now shipping Bluray players even though they were big backers of HD-DVD. Why? Because it makes good business sense, something you apparently don't have.

Microsoft is really disappointing me with this issue. I love gaming, but as of late the PS3 is the only HD console pushing the games forward and Microsoft is doing nothing to compete with them. As much as I love the Halo series and Bungie, ODST was a bit of a letdown... I hate to admit. I REALLY hate to admit that because of the fanboy-crazy environment N4G is; but if it helps to bring about a better Reach in even the smallest of ways, then so be it.

I think Reach will be the best since Combat Evolved. I feel that Reach will be more comparable to Resistance 2 instead of Killzone 2 in terms of a full-feeling battlefield because of the space both Halo: Reach and Resistance 2 seem to have. Killzone 2's had a very effective-feeling firefight environment, but since there were very few times you were able to use vehicles, plus the urban areas, Killzone 2 felt more like SOCOM or Gears of War because of the urban war-zone.

I miss the format wars. I happned to notice all the usernames that supported HD-DVD are gone like Cdzie, I remember he was fiercely backing HD-DVD. I remember one of them even said something like "Warner Bros will go HD-DVD soon and the rest will follow suit mark my words" and then the next day Wal-mart and all the other major chains committed to Blu-Ray which lead every other studio to side with them including Warner Bros a few days later. It was pretty funny. Microsoft still seems to be pretty butthurt over this. They're quite adamant on not supporting Blu-Ray.

Other than the size discrepancy between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, I think HD-DVD was much more consumer friendly format. Instead of getting a choice, Sony muzzled in with their checkbooks and Toshiba lost the war.

35GB, come on Sony, its also got making of videos and lost level episodes in HD, how much actual Game content does it house!?! Storage is not a problem yet... 2 DVDs, 2 DVDs, not a problem especially if it loads faster off the disc. I am a PS3 owner but blu-ray is not 'required' just yet. When we get good speeds from the drives and an engine like rage to use the storage up, then we need it. Digital downloads are not the way to go either. MS could always supply games on usb sticks with very high encryption, they go up to 64GB or possibly more. I am happy with both machines but blu-ray as a storage medium has not yet been proved. As a movie medium, it is leaps and bounds above DVD but thats it. I will be satisfied when Sony or another developer realease a blu-ray game that is filled with more than 15GB of gameplay data, NOT video as even the mighty Uncharted 2 uses. One thing is for sure, all this competition between Sony and MS is giving us gamers a very bright future. Keep up the good work, SOny and MS!

Saying we should go out and buy a standalone blue ray player isn’t just coming from one person this statement speaks for all of Microsoft. This company is so focused on profit that if it had the resources their next console would be designed by them. If they could they would go as far as to make their own video card and processor and not to forget there beloved digital download future. At the rate which they release windows and all the money they get each time it’s possible they could make everything for themselves. They figure we can force every pc maker to buy windows and use that as the operating system then we can force digital downloads on everyone in the future. They could probably even start making their own computers as well with windows and gaming both console and pc and digital downloads which they could receive every piece of profit from the consumer.

Microsoft is a company that doesn’t care about your opinion they feel they are powerful enough to make a profit from you by force. Look at Nintendo they gave up they cartridge format and adopted to dvd format nice and simple and look where they are with the wii. Hmm I wonder if Microsoft followed this easy step and adopted blue ray could they be as successful as Nintendo too? Nahh of course not because they feel they can use force and be as successful as the wii with their own way of distribution because this way means more profit.

The xbox 360 like I said in a previous letter has almost destroyed this generation of gaming if it wasn’t for ps3 I probably wouldn’t have the motivation to play anything. 360 is just a pc it’s a triple core intel processor with ati videocard and its about five year old technology that’s limited both in hardware and space. Because 360 sold in so many numbers developers refuse to ignore it and follow the same step as Microsoft hey why not make multiplatform and see double the amount of sales. Its okay up to a certain point where designing a multiplatform game is based upon 360’s limited aged hardware and dvd disc space. With the ps3 however is a system that is not a pc it’s a true game console and sony a company that cares not only about your opinion but also gaming as a passion and culture rich like the art in japan. When developing for ps3 your not limited at all it’s a like a freedom you don’t have to worry about disc space or hardware not being able to handle what you want to create. The only trouble ps3 developers have is trying to use all that power and tap into it rather than worrying about a system like 360 that can’t handle something and not have enough space to use more discs and pay royalties.

What Microsoft should do is develop a disc format for there next system instead of use blue ray this way people can own their games and have a physical library and Microsoft doesn’t have to worry about using a competitors format.

it's like when Sony had to come up with spin for not having rumble in the PS3. of course, on the whole Blu Ray issue, there is only ONE platform out there that supports Blu Ray AND gaming in one device.

it's kind of a lose/lose situation when people question MS on Blu Ray.

and i'm about 100% certain that if Microsoft had included HD DVD built into the 360 from the beginning, the format war would have turned out VERY different.

the ONLY reason why HD DVD failed was because, in one fell swoop, Blu Ray had an install base of 1 million units when the PS3 launched, and that install base continued to grow the more PS3 units sold.

the 360 was already at 5 million units sold by the time the PS3 launched.

imagine if the 360 included HD DVD, and Microsoft dared to take a bigger loss on the hardware (ie, launching the 360 at $350/$450, instead of $300/$400, and just ate the loss).

chances are, HD DVD would have won. afterall, it's hard to argue with a 5 million install base when the competition only had one. Blu Ray wouldn't have had a chance.

and lets be honest here, there was NOTHING WRONG with HD DVD as far as movies were concerned. the quality was GREAT. Blu Ray had more space for better audio than HD DVD, but you can't somehow make 1080p movies BETTER on either format. they were both 1080p, and both were of superb quality.

what killed HD DVD was the Playstation 3 and it's early adopters. by the end of the PS3's first year, Blu Ray had a significant presence in the market place. it was only a matter of time before it became the standard.

Microsoft supported HD DVD to slow down Blu Ray, that's all. it didn't work, so they moved on to Digital Distribution.

unfortunately, the practicality of using DD as the primary forms of media is keeping it from being mainstream. at least for the next 5 years or more (i imagine we won't get the bandwidth necessary to truly phase out hard copy media for another 10 years, in my opinion).

@Jason 360 - Microsoft still sided with Toshiba(the losing side in the format war), hence why Toshiba ended up making the HD DVD drive for 360. Also microsoft will of ended up losing millions in doing so.

I do agree DVD9 will be gone three or four years from now, but so will the ps3 and the 360 as the main market consoles.

I think the conspiracy here is that MS never wanted any format to take off. They want a digital download only future. There half arsed support for HD-DVD was a vein and crap attempt to stop Blu-Ray taking off and I personally dont ever see Blu-ray becoming as prevailent as DVD had. So a person from Microsoft is saying "Go Buy A PS3 For Bluray!!"? Sames like what he is saying.

360 does need bluray for two reasons: 1. To keep their games protected from people that try to copy their games without buying it and 2. For games like Final Fantasy 13 that takes up alot of room.

So yes 360 does need it, but not as much as for huge games Vs keeping their developers from losing money.

i have a 360 and a ps3, the ps3 is only good for films.. and mgs4.. stick to buying a £99 blu ray player

ok so MS has basically crapped out on Blu-Ray. Not only did HD-DVD go down the drain, but MS are holding their balls up to there waists and stating if you want B-R, you need to pay out more for it. In otherwords, a different product. Fair play. Microsoft doesn't make Blu-Ray. Great Business skills there folks. If MS want some more PROFIT, they need to ask for BR. Im not sayin i want them to be successful, but i want all gamers, 360 included to enjoy what everybody can enjoy. I am a PROUD PS3 owner, and i have been since day ONE of it's launch. But i guess i feel sorry for these guys. Look, the 360 guys want it, so negotiate it boys. Anyway, PS3 ROCKS, HANDS DOWN. 360-is ok and not a bad console. they just went in the wrong direction since the original xbox. Stop acting like ACTIVISION and be good to your followers MS. SONY have been giving out free hand-outs since i was on the PS2 about 3-4 years ago. SO WAKE THE F*** UP MICROSOFT, DO WHATS GOOD FOR YOUR FOLLOWERS, NOT YOUR DAMN CHECKBOOKS.
