Main complaints are not being able to tell what some actions do beforehand, and a lack of scene setting - you're plunged into situations without exposition, and even the character thoughts don't say why you're doing what you're doing. At one point you investigate a crime you don't know exists because of this aversion to exposition.

Characters rarely comment or reflect on the plot, and the only signs of change are visual rather than emotional: bandages and bruises reskinning the character. Deaths tend to be badly handled too, most coming at the hands of "comic book villains" and robbed of gravitas by the poor epliogues.

Also they say that one chase scene verges on parody, with you dodging chickens and crates of fruit and absent only two workmen carrying a big pane of glass.

Kitty Kat your reasoning is so flawed... in heavy Rain you move your character, investigate, etc.... until there is something to do and you press a sequence of buttons...
well, what do you do for example in Halo 3?
Apart from moving (the same,) you press the triggers all the time and ocasionally a button to throw a nade.
So in HR you even have more gameplay, you press more buttons :O

You know there is something wrong with a magazine when they can hand a 10/10 to Bayonetta, but give a 9/10 to Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2. I am glad that HR actually got a 7/10; they actually think it is a good game!

There was a "Time Extend" piece in Edge recently about Fahrenheit, which was fairly critical of the plot going full retard.

I'd say Fahrenheit was pretty overrated at the time, people were all applauding the adult direction and innovation that it represented - glossing over that the player ends up as a zombie jedi fighting the internet.

I'm sorry to have to say this as I always oput it down to them liking the controversy before but it's getting embarrassing for me to read anything Edge do these days. It's got to be more than a coincidence when they ALWAYS(unless their bias towards a UK dev is in action as with LBP-they love their fellow brits at Edge and always have)mark PS3 games below their metacritic(though they gave the first ME a 7 so I was pleased to see them notice the second one was a better game)-it's gettng ridiculous now and UI don't think I'vve ever seen anything like it in all my years of reading and working for mags and newspapers.

I don't enjoy the thought but it's got to the point where Edge look truly biased. I never thought I'd say something like that about fellow journalists but fact is fact and they keep on doing it. Everey big Ps3 release is marked down on Edge, dress it up however you like but it's way beyond the realms of coincidence at this point. Very, very sad that this should be happening in a publication that I used to subscribe to and in my own country.Shameful.

I am a gamer. Ask any of the people on N4G who have me on their PSN/ Live friends list, and they will tell you that lately I've been spending my time between Magna Carta 2 and WKC (will be playing the Wii in the summer too, once Arc Rise Fantasia is out). I don't care about the system, I care about the games (well, the genre - JRPGs in particular). I can easily level complaints against any of the companies who make my little toys. For example, I have made comments on N4G that cover a range of opinions, such as: Wii has weak online features and $hit graphics, PSN has very poor support for the Go and Sony takes too long in releasing their games, 360 has terrible build quality and Natal doesn't look very exciting (same for the PS3 wand - for "motion control" spazziness, I don't need any of these casual devices I have a Wii).

My brain is capable of separating the art of what I love (the games) from the faceless corporations that back them. Yours does not seem to have that function. You appear to be a blind, mind-less, capitalist to the core; spouting the same gibberish for your imagined "team" as the PR mouthpieces (Greenburg, Dille, Reggie).

And moving away from the issue of your mental flaccidity, back to the subject of review scores, my point is this: 80% of the world buys games without the influence of such things as review scores or critics, so why is metacritic and all this internet nonsense so important to you when it's only a small part of the ecology?

The fact is EDGE has been really harsh on PS3 exclusives, while 360 exclusives are raved as being "epic", "astonishing", and "far-reaching." Facts are facts. In fact if EDGE , a "professional" reviewer is being biased towards a console, might as well not rate the games that only pertain to that console. Bias is found around the world, but the key is to limit it, especially if you are a "professional" critique. Meaning you must treat every product the same, with the same consequences. For example, saying Uncharted 2 is just Uncharted 1 with bigger story, more weapons and just graphic upgrades , thus it deserves a 8. This should also be incorporated into HALO: ODST, for being shorter , having just as many weapons as HALO3, and graphics virtually unchanged. Edge has no consistency, which is why, gamers and to an extreme PS3 fanboys see this publisher as a joke.

Skeptical, open your eyes man. This has been going on for a while now. There are so many Sony fanboys that believe that MS buys out media resources to give bad reviews to Sony products and games. That's just stupid. Not every PS3 exclusive is going to get a 10 out of 10.

Uncharted 2 won Game of the Year just about everywhere. I don't see why many of these "biased" news sources would acknowledge the greatness of one PS3 exclusive and not another.

Here's a crazy thought: maybe Heavy Rain isn't quite the 10 out of 10 people thought it would be, and maybe Mass Effect 2 is that good. These things are bound to happen to 360 exclusives too, don't worry. Maybe Alan Wake or Splinter Cell will turn out to be less than expected. Or maybe they'll be even better, you never know.

HAHAHA it's laughable how biased Edge are. There's no denying it, they have been STATISTICALLY PROVEN to be biased against the PS3. Heavy Rain is currently sitting on a metacritic of 89. What do edge rate it? 19 marks below the average, the lowest score on metacritic.

Of course Mass Effect 2 gets a lovely 9/10 which is not that far off the average. (Plenty of other mags/sites have given ME2 a 9).

I'm waiting for Edge's review score of GoW3; GoW3 might well get an average metacritic score of 90-ish, but we can bet that Edge won't give higher than an 8, guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised at a 6.

It's not like Edge are unique in in giving Heavy Rain a 7 - and the review treats the game as it should be treated, it focuses on the story, narrative and interactivity. How many mags/sites gave the original Mass Effect a 7? Or Bioshock an 8?

You totally miss the fact that the review is positive, you choose to focus on the instant gratification of the score, rather than the context and how it got there. And if you're that type of person, I don't think Heavy Rain will be for you - how about the Wii?

By statistically proven I am referring to analysis that was performed a few months ago here on N4G (I forget which user did it). If I recall correctly, it basically showed that unlike sites which PS3 fanboys claim to be biased (like Eurogamer), both the mean and median scores for PS3 exclusives were significantly (beyond 2 standard deviations) below the metacritic average compared to 360 exclusives.

Of course I am going on the score since the review itself was not posted, and of course 7 still indicates a positive review, but the scores themselves give a good indication of the bias (and are the only things that can be statistically analysed). I know I don't want to read the review because it will be full of the Edge staff's provably biased opinions.

Edge are not doing themselves any favours by consistantly rating PS3 exclusives lower. Personally I will never buy the mag, because it disagrees so wholeheartedly with my personal gaming tastes, and the tastes of most gamers and reviewers out there.

I actually own both a ps3 and an Edge subscription (been getting the mag since issue one, and kept it up as a tradition/to have something in the mail). But... they've gone past the point of being 'a little statistically off the norm'. Their marks are quite noticeably and consistently lower for the PS3 (versus practically everyone else). There's the odd outlier (eg. British made Little Big Planet - Edge is a British mag btw), but overwhelmingly the scores they give to almost anything ps3 related are pretty far beyond the low side of low.

Props for not owning a ps3 and being able to call it, though frankly anyone 'not' calling it at this point is telling themselves fibs.

Edge have been shown to consistantly give lower marks to PS3 exclusives. To sum up their gaming tastes would be to say, "If it's a PS3 game, Edge probably don't like it as much as everyone else." It's not that they punish lack of innovation - Halo and Gears of War get great scores whilst Killzone 2 gets 6/10. Braid gets 9/10 whilst Heavy Rain gets 7/10. Flower only got a 7/10. Can you spot a pattern?

Sure, there are outliers, such as LBP, but if we average the scores up the general pattern emerges that the ONLY criterion for getting great scores from Edge magazine is to NOT be a PS3 exclusive. It's plainly obvious to see.

In any case, even if the laws of probability have conspired to provide the PS3 with Edge's least favourite type of games, I still don't agree with their opinion on almost all counts.

Lol it seems that his opinion doesnt exist as he let others decide wich game is AAA or not. His only opinion is: games on 360 = AAA, games on PS3 = turds. Its like he somehow forgets that if he is playing good games on his 360 its because the developers did their job right and that the games he is playing could very well be made on an piece of hardware that it doesnt have the name Xbox 360 attached to it. Mass effect 2 is a better game than Heavy Rain, so what exactly is your problem?. I think people will soon forget about Heavy Rain, only getting a lot of recognition because it's exclusive. Indigo Prophecy only sold 800k on three platforms. Stop getting buthurt over Heavy Rain, it's no God of war or Alan Wake.

They'll give AW what it eseves be that good or bad but it's the insistence on rating any non English made PS3 exclusive well below meta that raises eyebrows. Those stats really have me worried that fellow journalists may be biased and I never thought I'd be saying something like that. They actually put a premium on innovation too so I was hoping HR might get a better crack of the whip but when you can find someone prepared to give MGS4 an 8(still the best game on PS3 imo)I guess the warning signs should have been noticed-and when R2 got a 6, KZ2 a 7 and so on.

I've read Edge for years and it is going downhill.I've never like the reviews and 80% of Sony games have always been marked lower(along with their friends at Gamecentral)God of war,Rachet,Resistance,Killzone ,MGS4,HR.
The mag is run by different people to the early days and even the regular colunmns are in decline.I may have to cancel my subs.GamesTM were always xbox biased as well.Looks like there are no multi formats left for me that don't hate Sony.

The fact is EDGE has been really harsh on PS3 exclusives, while 360 exclusives are raved as being "epic", "astonishing", and "far-reaching." Facts are facts. In fact if EDGE , a "professional" reviewer is being biased towards a console, might as well not rate the games they bash on , because they are not 360 exclusive.
Bias is found around the world, but the key is to limit it, especially if you are a "professional" critique. Meaning you must treat every product the same, with the same consequences. For example, saying Uncharted 2 is just Uncharted 1 with bigger story, more weapons and just graphic upgrades , thus it deserves a 8. This should also be incorporated into HALO: ODST, for being shorter , having just as many weapons as HALO3, and graphics virtually unchanged. Edge has no consistency, which is why, gamers and to an extreme PS3 fanboys see this publisher as a joke.

i would trust edge with reviews if they didn't give the occasional game a stupidly high score. They give most decent games a 7 or 8 which is fine by me but then every so often a game thats is good but not any better than the games that get 7 or 8 get a 10 for example halo 3 and little big planet. i know both halo 3 and lbp are good games but what makes them deserve a 10 more than some of the other great games they give lower scores to. i know its the reviewers personal opinion but consistency is really important with review scores. I know people thinking this will probably think i'm a stupid fanboy but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise they aren't being consistent.

It's interesting that Indigo Prophecy scored higher when it looks like everything in Heavy Rain has been improved by comparison, including the gameplay and story, not to mention the technical aspects of the game are among the most impressive we've seen on a console.

Has anyone actually READ the review??!! It doesnt heavily criticise it or anything, it just points out a few areas where maybe it wasnt so strong.
In edge a "5" score is average, "6" is better than average and will appeal to alot of people.. A "7" is good and usually worth buying.

Lets say we had one apple and we asked Edge to review it. Here is how the review would read depending on which console that apple was for.

360 apple: Shiny red nutritious tasty treat, healthy.

Same exact fruit moved to the PS3 category would read:

PS3 apple: Small red incomplete meal, leaves you hungry, too shiny almost wax looking.

This is the way of Edge, and they are inconsistent in their review standards, and do not hold both console's titles to the same fire.

Halo to them would be a great online FPS game. Killzone2 would be a FPS game that did not reinvent FPS, doesn't bring anything new (despite successfully implementing FPS cover system).

I think you get the drift. Edge seems to review 360 titles from a stance of explaining why it is good/fun. Edge seems to review PS3 titles from the stance of finding out what is wrong with them. A point deducting offense on a PS3 game is easily forgiven on the opposite console. Well, at least this is how I see it. But I could give a crap less about Edge's reviews, i will be buying HR day 1.
