Gamekult: Heavy Rain review

Difficult to escape since few months to the Heavy Rain phenomenon: nobody played it but everybody already have their opinion. Narrative prowess for some, video game negation for the others, this inheritor of Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in USA) hasn't left anybody indifferent during its development and the ambitions of its creator may have helped push up the sauce.

Will the new Quantic Dream game finally conciliate the narrative power of cinema with the typical interactions of a video game?

I don't buy the fact that these critics are tough reviewers, their main points seem to contradict themselves. "Easy to handle" for pros but "clumsy gameplay" in the cons? Also, boredom is strictly subjective. What's boring to one person could be amazingly fun for another. These "review" scores definitely seem garnered towards creating dissent and conversation as opposed to offering a valid and objective review of the game.

Well I've put about 35 hours into into MAG in just under a week so if I get the same out of Heavy Rain I'll consider it a good value purchase.

For some reason I played about 5 hours of ME2 but I just don't feel like playing it any more atm - just find I want to get back to MAG instead...

I'm not sure which review sites to look at for good indications of where to put my cash any more...

This sites reviews appear to be genre biased. Likely the result of a small review staff that doesn't have very diverse interests.

If you look at the sites recent history of reviews, the only 2 games to score an 8 on Xbox or PS3 were Bayonetta and Darksiders. This site has a very clear bias toward Hack and Slash games.

Exactly, Heavy Rain needs to be understood as something that's not a traditional game. It's like Flower, or something of that nature at a grander scale.

I remember how bold Shadow of the Colossus was. On paper it sounded very tough to make a game where all you do is fight bosses-- but the concept became so pure and it just clicked with people, even though it was tough to digest.

No different with something like Heavy Rain-- the main goal is to connect the gamers and offer them a different experience.

Whether or not the reviewer "got it" or not seems in question, but overall HR has been received well.

The issue for me is length. I'll likely skip it for now and pick it up when it gets cheaper. I'm looking towards BC2 just because I could probably live off of that for a while longer than something like Heavy Rain since I'm looking for a MP fix. MW2 is just not doing it for me.

I think the reviewer meant that even though we can control easily the character,some interactions with the background become irritating, a bit like when you play a good platformer but when some passages are pretty much a pain in the ass due to a level-design misconception.

What always amazes me on these comments is the people who have already decided if the game is good or bad when they haven't even played it.

The thing is Heavy Rain is obviously a good looking game, it may play well and be entertaining, it may not. Nothing is decided yet as to whether this is a good game or a bad one.

i may be disappointed in certain aspects of Mass Effect 2, but there is NO WAY it's a 7/10 game. 8.5-9/10 tops.

as for Heavy Rain, i'm not surprised by this type of score. Indigo Prophecy wasn't for everyone. it also had clumsy game play, "QTEs" for certain events (having to press a button to open a door or make some dinner is NOT a QTE, it's a contextual action), and inconsistencies in the scenario.

it's also one of the best games of it's generation.

considering that these guys gave ME2 a 7/10, i think a 6/10 for Heavy Rain is damn good.

i would score Indigo Prophecy anything higher than a 7/10 in terms of game polish and things like controls, but when it comes to doing something different, crafting an intriguing narrative and cast of characters, and pushing the industry to more mature places, i'd give IP a solid 9/10.

HR is IP on steroids.

i don't mind these polarizing reviews for this (and even MAG), because it's a game that will NOT appeal to everybody.

i think some people have this misconception that the guys in the gaming media are speaking for gaming/gamers as a whole. NO. they are only speaking for themselves. and if a certain type of game doesn't appeal to them, naturally, it will reflect in their write up of the game.

for example, i HATE sports and sports games. if i were to review a Madden, or an MLB: The Show, i'm 100% certain that it wouldn't be the best review, and not very helpful to the reader. it's why i don't review sports games on my site.

HR will appeal to a certain gamer, and it's up to that gamer to to spread the word about the game to their family/friend gamers who may find it interesting.

a 6/10 score isn't surprising from a group of people in the media that are so quick to slap 9/10 scores on the latest version of >insert MP shooter here<, or >insert popular sandbox franchise here<.

creativity is often left unrewarded until well after the fact. see, Ico, and Indigo Prophecy, and their initial reception, and thoughts on the games NOW, years later.

it's a shame, because Heavy Rain is something special, and i don't even have to have played it to know. Indigo Prophecy was special as well. Heavy Rain will be appreciated at some point, but maybe not now, and most certainly not by everybody.

The thing is that GK uses the whole scale, meaning 6 is above average but not that good. 7 on gamekult is good, 8 is very good, and 9 is extremely rare; actually this matches perfectly the french grading system in education where most college students are satisfied with a 12/20, which is a correct grade, and where yuo need a 10/20 to pass. That's the difference between a scale that considers that anything below 60/100 is F and one in which you can actually get a 0...

Maybe their review is a bit harsh, but judging from other reviews, there's no way HR deserved more than a 7 at best on GK. Even jv.com which usually reviews games higher only gave it 15/20.

Don't let these reviewers get you upset. It seems only some people can see what Sony and friends ar e trying to do. Unlike Nintendo and Microsoft have already sold there souls a long time ago and it shows in their bland, uninspired, overmilked games. Sony seems to be still attempting to bring games that still have life and character in them. And instead of being rewarded they get shouted down and their games get nitpicked to death and accused of being overrated and unoriginal. while the other systems cookie cutter games get away scott free.In short I don't understand why everyone is so eager to destroy any attempt at trying new things in favour of the same thing 20 times over and over again. Final Fantasy is way past its prime but everyone gets angry and upset everytime some one says that. My point is, where is the defense for the new guy? Its games like these that will define the next generation consokes.

* Well done intrigue (Nice for a movie)
* A real influence on events (Nice for an interactive movie)
* Quite good-looking (???????????? This was supposed to be the end f all graphics, was hyped more than that too ????, what happened ?)
* Neat direction (ok, for a movie nice)
* Easy to handle (good)

Cons:
* We're often bored (reason #1 not to buy it, i play games for fun)
* QTEs for really everything and anything (reason #2, not fun)
* Clumsy gameplay (again no fun at all)
* Serious rhythm problems (debatable)
* Some inconsistencies in the scenario (who cares ?, i would rather have great gameplay and no scenario at all)

So, the "game" has a major problem, is a rent at best, like a movie and not a game

and dont mind QTE being the main interactive game play mechanic then you may enjoy this game, if that does not sound like something you'd enjoy then there you go.

I love how folks are hyping this up as some revolution in gaming like they did for MAG (which I own and enjoy), it seems games are called revolutionary when their expected audience is small as a way to hide some basic flaws and/or lack of any real innovation. Like how MAG is a mediocre FPS w/ 256 players done on the console, and Heavy Rain is a story and character driven game with a sh*tload of QTE.

I am buying Heavy Rain because I have enjoyed Quantic Dreams previous work, but revolution in gaming, I think not.

Used to be Gamespot.fr, they are part of CBS Interactive.
So it's not exactly a small, obscure site.

They are known for their opinionated reviews and their tougher than average scores, but honestly I like it.

Yes, if you compare the scores of several games they have reviewed recently, it is unsettling to see that the supreme rip-off that is Dante's Inferno got the same mark as Heavy Rain. Or that the shallow Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2 both got an 8.

But taken individually, their reviews always make sense and their points are well made.
A 7 mark shouldn't be a given, it denotes a good product. 6 denotes a flawed but fair product.
For many publications nowadays, 7 is the average score.
