CVG: Mass Effect 2 Review

Mass Effect 2 makes its predecessor look really simple. Whether you're eavesdropping on a pair of Krogans in the citadel, mining planets for resources from space, or outfitting your private deck with a fish tank and space hamster, almost every area in the game is improved upon and impressively presented.

Uppers
* Beautiful, engrossing universe
* Superior combat
* Incredibly cinematic
* Charming, believable characters

Downers
* Dragon Age is still the one for RPG purists

Poor excuse for a downer. Good review overall though.

green5203d ago

I can't believe i have not gotten Dragons Age origins. It's from Biowars so i know it will be epic.Anyway, can't wait for this masterpiece to drop on friday.

Megaton5203d ago (Edited 5203d ago )

I should really get into more WRPG's. I've been playing JRPG's since the SNES, but the first WRPG I ever played to completion was Fallout 3, and I was surprised by how much I loved it. Dabbled around in Mass Effect a bit, but it didn't grab me by the sack the way Fallout 3 did.

Saaking5203d ago

It's more of a shooter than an RPG. Or at least I'm guessing that's why they put it as a negative.

GiantEnemyCrab5203d ago (Edited 5203d ago )

I think the downer is mainly because it has a lot of action sequences, which for me is great.

My complaint with Dragon Age was the story.. Just could not get into it and prefer ME's MUCH more.

If that's all you can give the game for a downer then it's looking really good. I don't think the game has gotten anything less than a 9 so far.

laser guns > swords

CWMR5203d ago

-I think the downer they expressed was a bit of a reach, but I guess they had to put something. The thing is, Mass Effect 2 is an action RPG and I don't think it is any less of an RPG due to its real time action gameplay. It still has all of the elements that makes an RPG an RPG. At least that is my opinion. But whatever Mass Effect is, one thing is certain: it is a must-play game experience.-

Bigpappy5203d ago (Edited 5203d ago )

Mass Effect is a Hybrid. Why is that a negative?

The RPG play in ME is top of the line conversation and very deep leveling, customization and management of team inventory weapon and bullet choices...

THE MAX SPEED 215203d ago

nice score. I lol'ed at the Downer. smh.

RedPawn5203d ago

This game sucks so bad, I can't wait to pick up my CE Edition on 360.

It's cold in a 1 system world.

RedPawn5203d ago

Okaaaay!

It means I'm not playing this on P.C, but I do own all 3 systems.

MajestieBeast5203d ago

Downer for me is i watched the documentary and still have to wait till the 28th for the game to get unlocked wonder why i even bother paying for games when the pirates are alrdy playing and im waiting for a release date:(

RedPawn5203d ago

Because pirates will one day ruin the probability of a sequel to one of you favorite games, and waiting makes your enjoyment all that more enthralling.

IDK

Nihilism5203d ago (Edited 5203d ago )

Dude, make sure you support the devs, a great game that is 30-40 hours long and that has massive replayability and continuity is worth the price, but I may have to wait even longer than you...

I imported the C.E as it worked out cheaper from the U.S

aus collectors edition from EB: $129
U.S collectors edition from Gamestop including postage: $97

on their site is says "allow 3-5 days for international shipping".

:(

EDIT:

That and the fact that i'm GMT+10, it's been the 26th here for even longer...

GamerPS3605203d ago

That really sux that you have to pay 2 games price for one. I guess, you learn to live with it.

Nihilism5203d ago

Yep it really sucks, some places are cheaper, than $99 per game, but the place that I usually buy from didn't stock the C.E, and there was no way I was going to concede defeat and give EB games the ridiculous amount they charge

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave19d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan19d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
