DICE: Bad Company 2 'reaching' Uncharted 2's graphics

Upcoming FPS Battlefield Bad Company 2 is "reaching" the graphical quality set by last year's stunning PS3-exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but it will not surpass it, developer DICE had admitted.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, producer Gordon Van Dyke said no game can claim to better the graphics seen in Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2.

That's not what I saw in the beta. Disregard Bad Company 2's quality, it is plagued on consoles by a bunch of aliasing that seriously drops down our appreciation of graphics. So unless they fix that until the release of the game or they are talking about the PC version in extremely high settings, I don't see how the game can be a graphical reference.

Graphics in multiplayer are almost always downsampled(as can be seen in Uncharted 2 as well). I think they are talking about the single player campaign.

Haven't had the chance to play it online but if that's the case then Killzone 2 is an exception.

Games like COD MW2, Uncharted 2, Gears 2, and a ton of other titles have downsampled graphics in the multiplayer modes.

Agreed. However KZ2 has limited weapons, not nearly as much destructable environments and no vehicles. KZ2 wasn't really pushing the hardware other to have to make large scale calculations.

There is by far more things happening on screen with Battlefield Badcompany 2 for the hardware to calculate thus having the devs to downscale the AA and graphics. Especially in multiplayer. This also applies to Uncharted 2. With less going on, more resources can go towards graphics.

The beta was awsome but the graphics are nowhere near Uncharted 2. There was a lot of model switching to lower poly models which was far too obvious.

It makes sense for the game to use lower poly models for people who are far away but shouldn't really happen when you're viewing the guy who killed you.

edit: The PC version will obviously be better graphically so it could be that which they're talking about and we should probably wait for the final product first.

None of you saw the game in it's current or final state, you've only seen the BETA version which was released 2 months ago, which was almost 5 months before the final release date. This game already looked good in the beta and with a March release date there is no telling how good the final gfx will be. Uncharted 2's graphics are only possible because of the computing power combined with huge disk space available thanks to BD technology. However, it is great to see other developers showing respect. Naughty Dogs have really outdone everybody in almost every department.

Perhaps his real goal was to avoid comparison with another shooter ... Killzone 2. That game is so advanced that it even applies lighting nd physics calculations to something as seemingly trivial as the little burning spark-like embers from an explosion. Dust clouds are affected by dynamic events in real time. Killzone 2 has set the technology standard higher than anyone could have predicted.

Gears of War 1 beats UC2's graphics back in 2005, lol, seriously UC2's are nice but only the animations/cut scenes are really good and not stunning so it's only been sony fans who say otherwise. Dude I have maxed out crysis on ultra high everything and kept a 50 fps framerate (if that tells you anything), and UC2 beats crysis. I can tell you for certain that the textures in UC2 look better at 720p than what crysis was even on the highest resolution, because resolution means squat, it is highly overated.

Yes the multiplats are better on the PC than the PS3 and 360 (not by much either), but to be bvtt hvrt because UC2 breaks you're mold of beating out almost every PC game? it will on the PC, that's for sure. especially with DX11 tessellation, running at a higher resolution than U2 can, Uncharted 2 is only 720p max(1280x720), BFBC2 on the PC can be played at up to but not limited to 2500x1600, that's 4x more pixels on screen at any given moment. better texture quality, more AA...as with most PC games, it will have better graphics than Uncharted 2. Anyone who disagrees doesn't know what graphics means, and doesn't know how games are made either.

Having said that, Uncharted 2 reigns supreme on consoles.

The thing is PC graphics, while good, are too clean. I like looking at high end PC graphics on my PC, but they still don't match "certain" PS3 games graphics. Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2's come to mind. They just have this weight to them. This heft. The lighting and the way the worlds are crafted really bring you into the screen. A PC game just isn't like that. Again, beautiful, crips and clear graphics on PC games, a great many, but they often times don't match Ps3's top games in my opinion.

I'm not saying the PC isn't more powerful than the Ps3, I know for a fact mine smokes the Ps3's ass and rotates it twice, but I prefer the feel, weight and look of Ps3 games over Pc games. I definatley prefer the controller over the mouse. That I do know.

The screen definitely crosses U2 but that is from a high end PC.

But still the PS3 beat was awesome. It really looked good and guys never forget that FPS are demanding in terms of hardware. I would say it has blown MW2 in grpahics department even its visual fiedlity reaches near that of KZ2 (it definitely the best looking game on PS3 timed). Even when it has not used defered shading and the game is not dark so no hiding of dull textures or areas.

But still if the reach the screen shown of the PC version till the final game they can say that they have beaten U2 but not yet.

The thing is I have Crysis on my pc I can run it with the highest settings but it will lagg, but I use only high settings. When you look at the water quality of Cryis and Uncharted 2, Uncharted 2 clearly wins. But with jungle quality its really hard to say, Crysis has maybe a little edge because it reflects the sunlight a bit more when your in the middle of the jungle, and that you can shoot of trees and all. Crysis maybe beat Uncharted 2 in some ways but defiantly not the quality of the game itself.

Everyone knows that what you see in a beta is relatively close to what you get in the final release minus alot of the bugs, screen tears, glitches, etc. It's not going to go from rags to riches from beta to release. In other words, don't be expecting this game to go from looking like it did in the beta to all of the sudden reaching Uncharted 2 or Crysis caliber. Given that I'm not going to say that they're going to be terrible because frankly I don't care. I would just suggest those people that think this game is going to arise all glorious and graphically lightyears beyond the beta to not overexpect.

as far as DICE and BFBC2, The graphics will be good but since it's a multiplatformer it will be modeled after the Xbox360 so this guy is full of CRAP saying that their graphics are close cause they are not.

I only care that the game is superior to Modern Warfare 2.
This multiplayer multi vehicle game has too much going on to spend too many resources on graphics especially since you only have 8 GB of space unlike Uncharted which had 25 GB to work with.

Get real Dice and leave Uncharted alone and concentrate on CRUSHING Gimp Ward and their crapware MW2.

Also this is why the PS3 is better than the 360, just compare exclusive titles, Actually just compare Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 to the entire 360 library and the 360 can't compete.

well BBC2 beta was sick and the graphics were impressive but not as impressive as kz2 or uncharted. however i like that it has a weighty feel like kz2. also the sniping is top notch with solid bullet drop and bullet leading like in flashpoint but with much higher quality. Bad Company should be worried about topping Modern Warfare, which it does.

Better light mapping, better sound, better physics, vehicles, destruction, bigger maps, bullet drop, bullet travel time...the only thing Modern Warfare has over Bad Company is framerate. And that's not even completely stable all the time anyways, so as an overall package, Bad Company 2 will, in my opinion, surpass Modern Warfare 2 in quality.
