Rumored 'Call of Duty: Vietnam' To Be More Story Heavy?

While not official, there have been several rumblings about Treyarch's next installment in the white hot Call of Duty franchise. Specifically, the current rumor is that Treyarch's Winter 2010 entry into the series will be based around conflicts regarding the Vietnam War.

Yeah, i think there is potential for a good story, since there is not a lot of vietnam games out there, there is still a lot of terrific stories to be told.

I still maintain World at War is the best Call of Duty game made this gen. Everyone was overly critical of the game because it was set in what is admittedly, a stagnant World War II setting. Even the multiplayer was more balance with more balanced maps that the Modern Warfare titles and Nazi Zombie was a phenomenal addition.

Did anyone else here enjoy World at War more than MW and MW2? It felt more epic and it seems like World at War was a better looking game too. Oh yeah, Nazi Zombies > Spec Ops anyday.

not only that, but it will be a game where you play the loosing side, which i think is unique.

I'm tired of the whole "YEAH TESTOSTERONE WOOOOOW WE WIN EVERYTHING" kind of idea, so it will be interesting to have to survive ambushes etc (i know WaW had something of the genre but this will be absolute defeat =D)

Saving Private Ryan a epic story? Hardly, the only thing worth watching in that movie is the opening sequence, the rest of the movie is garbage!

How about better war storylines like that seen in Band of Brothers, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Forgotten Soldier, Das Boot, Flags of our Fathers, etc?

It really won't take much to make a COD game "story heavy" since the storylines are usually so ridiculous! With most COD games it's like your witnessing something made by the Propaganda Department since they always have over the top and uber glorified scenarios. Has a war game even gone as far as trying to humanize those around you? I know Velvet Assassin is one but that game has a ton of other issues.

Problem is, TREYARCH is developing this. Their CODs are always overshadowed by the previous and upcoming installments by Infinity Ward. Since this would be COD's first foray into Vietnam, I would MUCH rather see Infinity Ward tackle it. I mean, there is LOADS of potential for awesome gameplay (jungle traps, napalm, blowdarts, etc) and I think that IW is more adept at coming up with the new stuff while Treyarch is best when they take things that IW develops and just updates/contextualizes it.

There have been a few other games about Vietnam that come to mind, and none were all that great. Hope this turns out to be different.

I use the term "Lose" loosely because America did not lose or win Vietnam, all they did was go in, kill bunch of people and 50,000 of themselfs then pull out. Thats it, didnt change a thing.

Its also Politically correct to hate America, anything Anti-American is Politically Correct in todays world.

I find it funny that people hate another country because either they think they are stupid and such but in reality their country is no different, America is no exception.

People overestimate America but at the same time underestimate them. I find it funny that people hate America for going into a country and trying to help, instead of sit back and watch it tear itself apart, but they dont hate that country. Every government has other intentions.

God never told us to sit back and watch but to help fellow people out thy neighbor. Why do people think America is a bad place?

can't be any worse then the turd IW released. a campaign that should have been DLC and a broken glitch fest of a MP. Either way it is a used buy because it wears the Activision name on it so you know it will be average at best.

COD is the Madden of FPS...new game every year with incremental improvements....

Exactly, that's why i didn't buy MW2 this year. I also didn't buy WaW although WaW did come with a zombie mode that added a lot entertainment wise to the game. I trust that Treyarch will bring more entertainment to the new CoD as well.

I think World At War was the best offering in the entire COD series. It was polished. It looked good. It played just like COD4 and COD6 and those are facts. The setting might not have been new or vastly different than what we've seen in lower resolution on past iterations of WWII games, but it damn sure looked phenomenal. I also really liked the multiplayer aspects of it too. Hell, I didn't even play COD4 online but a handful of times. I blasted out "WAW".

I think my biggest complaint is when you find a good game you like to play online something new comes along and steals all the players away from that game and they never return to the game. It leaves the game useless and that's why I wish there was something there to cushion the online aspects of these games more. Like make Call of Duty 20 as a stand alone game and then have like Call of Duty 20 online. Make us buy them separately and then the developers would have to support the multiplayer separately depending on sales.

I don't know, my biggest hang up with online games is the shelf life. They never last. You can get a game 4 or 5 months after it drops and try to jump online with it only to find no one playing anymore and that's a shame because it is making people rush out and buy the game before anyone, even if they don't have the money to do so.

You obviously haven't played the other cod games. Call of Duty 2 was the best cod game. BTW it's not called milking if there are only two modern warfare games. As far I know all of the cod games have been great. I expect the Vietnam one to be great.

This would be so cool because though it's not a contemporary shooter, it would be the closest thing Treyarch has come to making a modern day military FPS. There is sooooo much potential to craft a game based on the brutal battles in Vietnam. Day one for me.

something that needs to be treaded carefully, VERY CAREFULLY.

Though the Vietnam War (or Indochina conflict) was almost 30-40 years ago, its still regarded as one of the most controversial things of all time. The Vietnam War, wasn't just war, there was also the enormous antiwar movement that took place at the same time, they'd have to at least make note of that.

Last but not least is the psychological aspect of the Vietnam War, with the only expression that comes to mind is, War is Hell. PTSD, Shellshock, Jungle Fever, all these things were not only present, but Common in Vietnam, so creating an atmosphere that encompassed all these things would be difficult.

I still have high hopes for the game though, if anybody can do it, it's Treyarch.

Treyarch might be able to pull off something big with a COD Vietnam game if they do things right. COD:WAW showed that they are very capable of making great COD games.

I fully agree. A lot of people say treyarch just bites off of IW but one of WaW best features - Zombies - wasn't from IW, they also put in vehicles which i missed in CoD4 because i loved them in CoD3.

They also added to zombies with great new maps as DLC. To me, treyarch is way more capable of making an entertaining CoD than IW, and that's just me.

Please let this be true. If Treyarch keeps the same level of violence and gore that Infinity Ward is afraid to put in their games (dismemberment, huge bulletholes, ragdoll bodies, etc.) and takes it to Vietnam it'll be absolutely amazing. World at War's campaign was so much better than COD4s and if Treyarch's next game is anywhere near as good it'll be a classic. Not only will it look great, but people forget that WAW had Oldman and Sutherland so imagine who they'll get for COD NAM...

There just aren't enough Vietnam games in general, let alone good ones. Do it Treyarch.

Treyarch makes a better COD IMO , but instead of "dumping" Treyarch lets see what they can do, they are far better to the gaming community then IW, and with this new cod hopefully see the return of zombies lol vietcong zombies, i for one really want Treyarch to do well and maybe even come out of the shadows behind IW and besides Treyarch made the best cod of all and imo no cod game come's close to Call of Duty 2: Big Red One in term of story.don't get me wrong im not saying IW sucks there awesome i like them both, it just bugs me on how there criticized even when there game is a great game but they still get hated on. i for one wish you luck Treyarch,May the force be with you.NAZI ZOMBIES OWN!!!
