Final 3-D Blu-ray Specification Announced

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced the finalization and release of the "Blu-ray 3D" specification. It leverages the technical advantages of the BD format to deliver "unmatched picture quality" as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. The specification is also designed to allow the PS3 to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3-D.

Notably, the specification allows every player and movie supporting it to deliver full HD 1080p resolution to each eye. Moreover, the specification is display agnostic, meaning that Blu-ray 3D products will deliver the 3-D image to any compatible 3-D display, regardless of whether that display uses LCD, plasma or other technology and regardless of what 3-D technology the display uses to deliver the image to the viewer's eyes.

Regarding compatibility, the specification supports playback of 2-D discs in forthcoming 3-D players and can enable 2-D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on the installed base of Blu-ray Disc players currently in homes around the world.

In japan they're already broadcasting some television in 3-d. Starting with gran turismo 5, most ps3 games will support 3d gaming.
Sony is also selling its own 3d tv worldwide in 2010.

My samsung plasma is a pn42a450 and can do 3d as well. I dont have the glasses kit yet. I do believe the 360 is getting 3d as well so this will be good for both ps3 and 360.

There is a third party that has made a special program that will make the ps3 and 360 do 3d via hdmi and convert 2d movies into 3d. This sounds like the BDA has taken that approach one step further.

The image is blurred on the racing game. Is that the 3D effect? If it's, I don't like it. That's why I think I should wait and use the glasses to make my judgments.

I am just saying that I will probably have to use the glasses. I don't think a video on youtube will show you the real experience.

You can't record a 3D video with an average/common/normal camera, because it use a single lens that is equivalent to a Single Eye

3D gaming will be amazing, I know lot of people will say it make people have headaches but that's because they are not used to it

The only thing that bothers me are the glasses, this the first attempt to make 3D functional, but better implement a new way to enjoy it without the glasses ASAP

As you said, it's difficult to show the real experience of 3D on a video, if the guy isn't recording using a proper camera it won't show a big difference, that's why I am complaining. I am sure it will be amazing on a real TV+PS3 and not on a youtube video. evilmonkey501 is giving us some links but he will let people confused because the real experience is much better than what is showed on the videos.

I don't think I will have problems using glasses, it will be improved in the future.

I know guys that you cant see the 3d on the youtubevideo, however, it was provided as proof that gt5 will support 3d.I hope all of you get to enjoy 3d real soon....I'm already watching 3d porn...lol...ya know, you can get a 3d tv for a grand. The glasses kit I currently have was only around 130 usd. The benefit of getting The Sony 3dtv is that everything will come included and it wont need any external hardware to operate.

And of course, PS3 is forward-compatible with it. It literally only does EVERYTHING. 3-D gaming and now movies.

I imagine now Microsoft will enable 3d gaming on it's HDMI equipped 360's (those that don't have HDMI will be out of luck, component doesn't support the frame rate needed for 3D and I doubt many 3dtv's will accept a 3d signal over VGA, as most tv's don't even let you get HD over VGA (1024x768 limit) for piracy reasons). Whether the 360 could output at those frame rates is up in question, as the HDMI port was grafted onto the box at a later time (which is also why even though it has HDMI, it can't do the full 7.1 channel 24 bit uncompressed surround sound because 360's audio hardware was not built with HDMI in mind). I would think it'd be possible via a firmware update, but I'm not sure.

As for 3d movies... a definite no go for them. DVD just can't hold that much data, and it doesn't have 3-d built into it's spec. streaming... we can't even do real 1080p over current connections properly (not blu-ray quality), so we definitely aren't going to be getting decent quality HD 3-D any time soon.

"2D" Blu-Ray players that are able to have their firmware updated will be able to play the new 3-D blu-ray movies just like PS3 will. It's only the older ones, the ones that were sold when BD first came out and do not have the ability to update their firmware, that won't be able to play the 3D bd's.

so I just bought a 40' Sharp 1080p 120Hz LCD TV for nothing. DAMN YOU BLU-RAY. Only reason I bought that TV was to watch Blu-Ray in FULL HD, and now your coming out with 3D. LOL....Im actually not surprised at all, I knew they were coming out in 2010, but i decided, i needed a new tv now, and itll be another 3-4 years before 3D TVs and Blu-Ray 3D become standard n all'. I mean...people are just now fully getting into Blu-Ray, so the next upgrade what happen for a while.

Guess I better start saving up today for another new tv :)

This may seem odd... but can't 2D blu-ray players play 3D blu-rays.

Afterall a blu-rays job is to carry to seperate images... why not with 2D blu-ray just show the one side of it?

Yea, most likely with a software update for PS3s, or a firmware update for other blu-ray players, eventually all standard blu-ray players out now, will have support for blu-ray 3d playback.

The only problem lies within that you cannot play a 3d blu-ray movie on a HDTV (standard) tv. I mean you could and get the 3d glasses, but it will most likely turn out funny, and not look good at all. Plus the other problem, is that most blu-ray players out now from other companies like sharp, samsung, lg, etc. wont see updates for a while, and the more those models get pushed back, the less likely they are to update them, meaning youd have to buy a new blu-ray player that supports 3D playback. Which is why PS3 is literally the best blu-ray player out on the market and one of the reasons I spent $650 on day one to get one of these, cause I believed in blu-ray...and look where it is now (also cause Blu-Ray = Sony, PS3 = Sony, so everytime theres a firmware or software update for Blu-Ray players, PS3 is the first to get it and make Blu-Ray movie experience that more exciting :)

hyper, i also just picked up a 32" LG 1080p 60Hz HDTV and i knew 3D was coming but meh its no biggie, i wanted an upgrade now from my 19" 720p Sharp, its too small! but hey i have 3years to save money for a new tv so its all good.

Yea, I had been looking at a new tv for about a month now, and I remember reading N4G a while back and Sony had stated they were planning on launching 3D TVs in the later part of 2010. While I was initially like "Yea, and I cant wait cause I want one", i figured out that even if I get a new tv now, that will do me good for another 4-5 years, then when 3D TVs become standard, and Blu-Ray 3D becomes standard, then I may make the switch.

Its not like Sony would drop Blu-Ray support, as most likely, all Blu-Ray discs will have the 3d version built inside of every disc, as to not make it complicated for regualr average consumers, and to be loyal to those who dont have a 3d tv yet or those who may not want one and just live in full hd with no 3d.

But I could not pass up the deal i got from future shop. a Sharp 40" 1080p 120Hz HDTV and a Sony 5.1 Home Theatre system for $900CDN. It was like the best deal ever, and i couldnt pass it up (no matter how crappy of a sound system it came with, it was free and ill take it) :)

This is far better than that red-blue crap was, there is no flicker on the image also like on older clear glasses 3-d technologies. I've used it myself at this year's e3, and it works very well.

I don't remember the naysaying about HD and HD gaming that you mention. When the 360 released 4 years ago people were buying the HD console pretty much as quickly as Microsoft could make it. The consumer electronics industry more or less stopped making analogue, CRT-based displays and pretty much didn't give consumers the option to not come along to HD. The message was to come along or go without when your TV breaks.

As long as 3D HDTV requires people to wear 3D glasses to take advantage of it the technology will remain a novelty experience. If it were largely in demand we would be seeing a lot more than one or two 3D movies per year.

to all those going to buy a 3D ready tv hold off a bit. Those 3D ready tv's (the ones out right now) are NOT providing full 1080P to each eye. Infact its around half of that. The TVs on the market just dont have the bandwidth to supply that kind of data. I think it needs around 6 gigaflops. So be like me and wait till those TV's are on the market that can do that. Should be sometime after CES I hope.
