Uncharted 2's story is not lame, but it's no philosophical treatise either, so you can't say it has a particularly GREAT story. It has a Hollywood blockbuster feel to it, and that's how it was meant to be - there's nothing wrong with that. UC2's story may not be DEEP, but it sure as hell is EXCITING.

What the writer of this article is saying is that aside from the treasure hunting bits there isn't a story.

It's like he hasn't played the game at all.

SUMMARY
Nathan has got involved in a love triangle that forces him in every chapter to choose between his new flame and his old flame.

He meets people that help him along the way and save his life at times when you think it's all over.

At the end of the story Nathan chooses who he wants to be with and all the loose ends are tied up.
END SUMMARY

Now what I just described I think allows Uncharted 2 to be described as having more than just a get from point A to point B kind of story.

The author is a moron. Uncharted has always been intended to be an homage to the classic action/adventure stories from the 30s and especially the Indiana Jones series. While I can understand his point that there is nothing "original" about the story, he loses all credibility for such a flamebait title, which he acknowledges in the first sentence. Also he loses credibility for claiming Bioshock is the pinnacle of "original" storytelling. Bioshock was good, but it wasn't original; it just hadn't been seen as often.

The storytelling is much better than in any other game. The uncharted series has proven that the line between games and movies can be crossed, and that video game characters can have a realistic feel to them.

Uncharted is NOT lame, it's storytelling and level of character depth is what all games should strive to achieve. Drake's fortune was done beautifully and the sequel exceeded it, it has become my favourite series ever in gaming.

I didn't read the article as I felt the didn't deserve the hit. Lame? In exactly what way is the game lame? From it's fantastic action sequences? I'll cite dealing with the attack chopper in the Tibetan city here. For crying out loud, you're dealing with enemies with a chopper firing deadly rounds at you while you're trying to climb over ledges and get to the next rooftop. A building even collapses with you IN it, and you have to jump from it to another building through the windows. On character interaction, Chloe, Elena, and Jeff the cameraman talk to each other as you're going through the level together. Lines like, "Is it always like this with him", as enemies are constantly shooting at you, are brilliantly written and very human.

On a different topic, the graphics are extremely detailed and the DTS soundtrack is spot on and will rumble your house if you're playing the game with a home theatre. Control is first rate as well as the gun cursor follows the enemy you most recently locked onto.

That's about as far into the game as I am now. I just recently solved the huge dagger puzzle where the mouth of the statue opens for you with the mirrors. This article can claim "lame" status for Uncharted 2, but I've found everything about it lovable. From the characters, to the presentation, to the character interaction, to the action. Nothing falters. Sorry, Uncharted 2 is anything BUT lame. PlayStation: The Official Magazine called it, not just one of the best games of the year, but one of the best games of all time. I'm inclined to agree. It has a few negatives, but are far and few in between, and in no way make the game "lame". Sorry, but just the assumption that such a great game is lame, is lame in and of itself.

Adding in a love triangle does not give the game a good story...
Uncharted 2 is a great game with great storytelling, but can we at least agree that the actual plot is not particularly original? It's an homage to the action/adventures of old, and that's all it's shooting for. Again, if you want a philosophical treatise, go play MGS4. It's funny to me how any article that flies in the face of conventional thought or opinion (i.e. Uncharted, Killzone - insert any PS3 exclusive - is sent from God) gets labeled as just wanting hits or lame or retarded. Sure, that applies to a lot of them, but not this one. Who cares if it's a small site? The writer is actually trying to generate conversation about a game aspect that is very important. Story.

He's very glowing with his compliments. He clearly loved the game. He's just calling out the laziness in the narrative, something that is obvious though never got in my way of enjoying of the game. UC2 was great. But imagine what it would have been if there'd been a story there that we cared about. Not just characters and dialogue.

Usually communities only better themselves by absorbing new thought and unconventional thinking. I suppose Morganfell and his ilk were among those who rolled their eyes when Capernicus said the sun is the center of the solar system. "Don't listen to him. He just wants attention." Thankfully, for the rest of us, people gave it to him.

As stories go, its quite strong for an action genre.

I read a lot of fiction novels, and watch A LOT of movies (movie buffness =D), and I'm a sucker for good stories.

When it comes to video games my standards are naturally set a little lower.

One of my favorite video game stories of all time is SoTC, even though I managed to predict a change of plot at the end of the game right at the start (it looked too trivial for an Ico Team game plot).

Why? Not because it was (undoubtedly in relation to novel stories) cliché.

But because of how it was STRUCTURED.

The main strength of a story isn't how cliché it isn't, but how its told.

U2's story is told VERY well, and I very much enjoyed the way the ending played out.

I knew how it was going to end, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a good story. It just didn't have a strong PLOT.

Next time, back up your argument a little more strongly, because the whole article itself is CLICHÉ.

I don't think i've seen anyone try and pass it off as a literary masterpiece, but have said that 'for a videogame' it is very good - which is starting from a very low level.

When a game series reaches a certain level of excellence, then deeper analysis is welcome, and possibly called for. But to title the article 'Why does UC2 have to be.. so lame?' shows a lack of any sort of journalistic credibility.

Anyway. In the interest of actually discussing the storyline; I'm a bit torn on it to be honest.

On one hand, a simple well told story is a great thing - and UC2 is definitely nicely delivered and can stand tall next to other pop-culture movie offerings.

On the other hand, I couldn't shake a nagging feeling that it was all a bit samey to the previous story in terms of structure and delivery.

However, within the constraints of a video game, what were Naughty Dog to do? A linear story driven game needs to move from A to B as an increasing challenge for the player - so in some ways that structure dictates the type of story that can be told.

There are two thing about UC2 that might keep it from GOTY.
The sub par story, and the less than interesting multiplayer.

The story is no where near the quality of UC1, and the multiplayer will put you to sleep after a week or two.

The story of UC1 was a large part of the reason I came back for UC2 (and obviously the graphics). But the story was kinda generic for me. I could have told you exactly what was going to happen next.
Especially in the beginning when Drake was betrayed by the English dude.
When I can predict the outcome of a movie, I am not interested in it anymore. That is honestly what happened to me. I finished the game and still enjoyed the game because of all the other marvelous things that the game has to offer.

As far as the multiplayer. There is absolutely nothing new that I haven't seen from other games. Its not like the multiplayer is bad, it just isn't special at all. To me it seems like ND added a multiplayer because they had to, not because they wanted to.

Well i bought a ps3 about 2 months ago, and i just sold it last week. The PS3 is pure garbage. It is basically a glorified blu ray player. I got it so I could play all of the exclusives that were not on my 360. Well after playing killzone 2, uncharteds, ninja gaiden sigma, resistances, warhawk, metal gear 4, folklore, and a few more, I can honestly say i was let down. Great game but it did have a few lame flaws. The climbing got way out of hand some of the reasons why you did certain things seemed rediculous. Overall, one of my favorite games this year but definitly behind Batman for me.

Uncharted 2 is HEADS and SHOULDERS above the rest.

the only other game that i can think of that comes close to taking it's narrative seriously is Heavenly Sword. it had strong central characters, a memorable antagonist, and excellent performances, kind of like Uncharted 2. too bad HS was raped in reviews, even though the gameplay was on par with others in it's genre like DMC, Ninja Gaiden, and God of War (minus the tedious wandering around and backtracking).

i guarantee if Heavenly Sword had come out NOW, instead of during the epic "PS3 Hate Tsunami of 2007," it'd have gotten the credit it deserved. Folklore also.

anyway, my point is that the Uncharted series as a whole takes it's characters and pacing seriously. other game's formats are literally "get character to this point so they can fight/shoot/etc, rinse and repeat."

Uncharted, while following a similar format at LEAST tries to marry it with strong characterization, humor, and simple, yet engaging plots.

Metal Gear is the extreme of what Uncharted has done, because it is focused on deeper, more complex topics, and it's either a love it or hate it response to it's approach to story-telling in video games.

Uncharted is unlike any other game out there in terms of it's story-telling techniques.

play Uncharted 2, then play other games in similar genres, and it's simply not the same. the characters in those games feel like video game characters, with no more depth and characterization than what the game entails.

Nathan Drake and company feel like they have existed "in between" the games. like, even though their adventure has a beginning, middle, and end, they go off and do other stuff after the credits roll, and when you catch up with them again in the next game, they have grown and changed.

even Uncharted 1 doesn't quite start at the beginning. when we meet Elena and Nathan, even though it's the first time we've met them, the characters are ALREADY in the middle of things - en medias res. they clearly have a history, though a short one. we just happened to jump into their tale after they've already met and started the search for Francis Drake.

the plots in the Uncharted games are no different than films in the same genre, but, much like films like Indiana Jones, we don't get sucked into those stories because of the plot, but because of the strong characterization.

tell me, would you be captivated in Indiana Jones if he was, say, as bland as Master Chief?

Halo is popular because the gameplay is good, not due to strong, memorable characters.

same with Gears of War.

there are very few video game franchises that are remembered for their strong characterization.

we tend to associate good gameplay with the character (for example, Mario is shallow. as is Link, and yet we fondly look at those characters, not because they are particularly memorable, but because their respective games were SO good, we can't separate the two).

Lara Croft WAS a great character back in the day. at the time, there weren't really any protagonists in games with more than a passing backstory, or some sort of archetype that made it easy to latch onto them (ie, Duke Nukem is simply the tough guy archetype established by Arnold Schwarzenegger films. Marcus Fenix is the same archetype).

unfortunately, Eidos didn't grow Lara beyond that initial archetype and backstory, so her character feels flat and is uninteresting now, relying SOLELY on her fading sex appeal (at least in the beginning, Lara had sex appeal AND an endearing personality).

Naughty Dog has created a strong character, with believable motivations and character relationships, despite the extraordinary situations he finds himself in.

THAT'S what we respond to in the Uncharted series more than the plot.

you can literally stick Nathan Drake and company into ANY genre, and they'd still work.

you can put them in Horror, Romance, Comedy, Mystery, Sci Fi, Noir, and because they are so strong and well developed, you'd still find the story, no matter how standard or cliche, compelling.

how great would it be to see Nathan Drake as a 1030's Private Eye? it'd work. or a lead in a Romantic comedy? it'd still work.

the plot in Uncharted 2 is second fiddle to the personalities of it's cast.

i personally think the story in Uncharted 2 is no different than an Indiana Jones plot, so i was entertained by it. however, if the characters were bland and uninspired, it'd be a different story, and outside of the excellent gameplay, there'd be nothing else there.

Uncharted 2 is the total package. the gaming media needs to get over it.

i NEVER see games like Gears of War, Halo, or Mass Effect get put under the knife nearly as much as Playstation 3 exclusives.

it's like Playstation 3 exclusives have to go so far above and beyond the call of duty just to be considered "adequate," while 360 exclusives just have to bump up their player count from 8 to 10, and slap a tag line like "bigger, better, and more badass" on it to get heaps of praise.

it's official: no matter HOW PHENOMENAL a Playstation 3 exclusive is, it will never be good enough. look at Killzone 2; hands down the most impressive FPS on consoles this generation, and it's downplayed by the media. if the 360 had pulled off such a feat as Killzone 2, the praise would be endless. absolutely ENDLESS.

i'm not saying games like Gears and Halo AREN'T good, just that they receive so much praise for so little, while PS3 games (from MGS4, to LBP, to Killzone 2 and Uncharted) are simply dismissed, no matter what innovations and refinements they bring to their respective genres.

there is no other action/adventure game in the pulp adventure/serial genre like Uncharted 2. even on a technical level the things Naughty Dog did with the PS3 are insane (watch the behind the scenes videos on the disc, and so much thought and care was put into every aspect of Uncharted 2's development it's unreal).
