yeah. I appreciate the developers intent, but the game had a lot of issues. my personally biggest one was that the enemies always knew where you were when you made contact. i shot a guys car with a sniper rifle laying in a bush on hilltop over a mile away. he stopped, turned around, and drove for ten minutes towards me. got out and start shooting me intantly. i was like wtf? how could he even see me. other than that and driving and map reading the game was solid though. oh the respawning of enemies at secured checkpoints and safehouses was a bit of bullshizz

I don't see how Halo 3 was disappointing, it finished the Halo 3 storyline which is what everyone wanted, Halo 2 despite me enjoying it somewhat can be seen as disappointing to some, not so much 3.

Tomb Raider...did people even have expectations for that game? There's only one reason why that game sells...

When it got exclusive content, yeah, there were some expectations. Like that content would be worth it. That it would even be released.

Pretty sure there were suppose to be two DLCs, but the first was so underwhelming they didn't bother with a second.

Halo fans loved it, they play that MP online a LOT, the halo community is so big that makes Home look empty. Hey, easy now, im a PS3 fan, a PS brand fan for that matter, i can only wish KZ2 had half the online community halo 3 has. The campaign was fun, nothing special, just like CoD 4, or KZ2 for that matter (of course KZ2 has a lot going for it with physics animation etc).

Halo 3 is Not a Dissapointment, it is not a breakthrough experience neither, is just a fun FPS with one of the best online communities around

PS, Halo 2 was a HUGE dissapointment, that stupid ending was nerve recking!

Why don't many of my fellow Halo fans get that many people feel Halo3 was overrated purely as a HALO GAME and not in your normal terms. We shouldn't get offended as, if anything, it's kind of a compliment really. Does anyone really enjoy the SP(which is what this guy's on about)in H3 as much as they did their runs through CE? Cos that's what he means and what I mean and what everyone always(well mostly) mean when they say Halo3 dusappointed them-it didn't measure up to ast glories and just isn't perfect l;ike the ad campaign suggested. That's all it just isn't better than CEor as good) and didn't live up to an ad campaign that, if we're honest, maybe even a perfect game would fail to. Maybe the expectations those ads put in people's heads were unreasonable for ANY game to fulfill-that's why it was in a way iverhyped-because the ads gave a ludicrously high expectation for it and that was real hype right there. Fantastic and effective hype but hype none the less.

Really, people get WAY too defensive over Halo when it's big enough not to worry too much-honestly, if you think about it that ad campaign would be too much hype for the second coming!

Personally I'd have to say the big miss from his list is Too Human(I thought it automatically made you a 360 bot if you fail to mention DD's mess IF you first mention Haze, no?)-that game failed to live up to any of the missives that Dyack himself was happy enough to hype it with FFS!

RE5 overhyped? IDK, afterall it's a bi franchise and I'm bot sure there was that much prerelease hype saying it was anything that spevial outside of it's looks was there? Sure it disappointed many but a lot like it(why?)as well and I just don't recall many people/sites/mags saying it was a great step forward from RE4 anyway. Most of the talk was about whether it was racist and why the switch to co-op and the eternal controls issue.

Persoanlly I always put Fallout3 on a list of overhyped and disappointing games. Much like Halo3 it isn't that it's not a decent or even good game but it just isn't what the hpe suggests it to be. To me it had two iffy shooting systems, a poor story arc, poor level cap, way too many bugs and about a third of the atmoshere of the earlier Fallout games. It didn't, for me, nail the FPS/RPG hybrid role half as well as the media would have us believe and in practically every way felt iferior to Onlivion. Or it did when it wasn't either sounding or looking like recycled bits of Oblivion itself!

I'm sure most of you love Fallout3(fair enough) but that just shows what the problems are with lists like this one which are always opinion-who can say other than you which game failed to do what YOU thought it would? So unless we stick with the games which just made a mess of things(Too Guman, Lair etc)and make a VERY dull list or we have to have a few big games on there that a lot of people loved to make it worth reading or even writing. This does both thngs but misses out a couple of obvious ones, imo, while putting Halo3 in there and KZ2 as well-just cos he thought he was expected to, imo, for console balance!

Seriously though-Fallout3 still getting GOTY awards when it sholdn't have got near one? Maybe, maybe I'd understand a little better if it, or any of it's DLC even worked the first day you nought it, but even then it's just a very good game that didn't quite do what it set out to, not for me anyway.

It's true, KillZone2 was a massive disaster and a foolish attempt at trying to dethrone Halo 3. The only game that has been able to give Halo 3 a good run for its money would be COD 4.

As it stands Halo 3 has survived every console FPS to come out before and after its release.

KZ2 was far from disappointing. KZ2 was totally on a pedestal that everyone accused Sony as not delivering.. and when they delivered, they saw exactly how wrong they were, a Non stop action shooter, that blows everything out of the water in sheer intensity. yes it's story telling wasn't that impressive but it served as moving you from one point to another. Somthing Halo 3 failed to do... you can see the progression, KZ1-KZ, they moved forward... Bungie, movedbackwards after halo:CE, everything else, took a step back. the Multiplayer in halo 2 was the best and then they fell off in Halo 3 on everything. nothing but a huge hype and let down. KZ2, still has it's following and it's still p[roving it has legs.

It was repetitive and had its obvious problems, but I enjoyed what it had to offer. Then again I DID buy it used for $20, and I didn't fall for any hype, so that may have to do with it. It had a lot of potential (the graphics were there and the story was decent), but I'll agree that it failed to deliver a $60 experience. Hopefully AC2 will make up for AC1's problems.

Halo 3 delivered in spades. However fanboys that have never played the game will always say it is over hyped.

1. 4 player coop with Grunt BirthDay Party on was great.

2. It ended the story on a good note. Now Ill agree that Halo 2 left the story a little rocky at the end but 3 did a good job at wrapping it up.

3. I still dont think any Xbox online game can match it feature per feature. Had a Great time playing forge, making maps for racing, zombie hunts ext.

I disagree about Saint's Row 2 being hyped that much. IGN did a few stories about it, but it certainly was not hyped to hell the same way Halo 3 was. And I honestly think the hype for Killzone 2 was an internet phenomenon rather than public like GTA IV billboards and Halo 3 superbowl halftime commercials. Halo 3's major flaw was the campaign for me. I was hoping for a change of sorts. The Flood felt more annoying than scary. Gravemind was once again a douche. I would have liked it more if there were more night missions. Is it just me or does Halo 3 take place entirely in day time? I can't remember the night missions, if there were any. Killzone 2 deserved as many sales as Halo 3 but wasn't marketed well enough, or maybe Halo 3 didn't deserve as many sales but was marketed too well.

The CGI trailers of Halo 3 are something for Bungie to shoot for in the next generation.

Resident Evil 5 was not scary.

To this day I still believe Halo 3 could have been more but Microsoft put the screws on hard and forced Bungie to release it to early as this was the same period it was becoming obvious the 360 Hardware had massive problems and this over hyped game was a distraction to take some heat off for a brief period, but it had potential to be so much more on a machine capable of so much more but looked like an Xbox original game and why did so many compare it to halo 2 because it wasn't up to standard for a so called next gen platform.

If anything Killzone2 was the game everyone was hyping to fail miserably. Didn't fall short in really any aspect. Met the hype and beat the hate.

Halo3 on the other hand was quite mediocre. You'd think they'd have tried to redeem the piece of crap campaign from Halo2 but it was only slightly better. I still think Halo1 is the best one. Had far more fun playing its multiplayer LAN than Halo2/3s weapon whoring BS. Sure you "hardcore" gamers (pathetic joke compared to PC gamers) play the multi all the time but it's not much of an improvement.

GTA4 needs to be on here. Same with Gears2. I think RE5 definitely deserves it. That control style and interface worked last gen but things have evolved too much to get away with crap controls. Just felt like RE4 in a game where RE4 controls don't work.

Halo3 doesn't deserve to be there - it's about as polished a game as you'll see, they added tons of great options like replaying the entire match from any player's perspective, all the great online modes and level creation options and does it with millions of players. It lived up to the hype, IMO.

Now GTA4 needs to be on there and also Little Big Planet.

LittleBigPlanet definitely shouldn't be on there. It's absolutely brilliant. I didn't quite get it when it first came out and I gave it a mediocre review (I recommended to "rent it" instead of "buy it" in my review) because at that time I just wasn't seeing any good stuff from the community created levels. The story mode was really, really good, but not enough to warrant a purchase. But add in what the community has become for LBP and you get an immeasurably amazing game. You can spend hours a day just playing the community levels, and then don't even get me started on how much time you can sink into making your own levels. This game is a treasure-trove of creativity and it's one of the all-time best outlets for aspiring game-designers to try their hand at expressing themselves. The versatility is astounding. It's easily one of the best games of all time, if not the best.

These games seem to be praised for doing a lot of the same things without any significant difference than its predecessor.

As for the rest of the games on the list, the fans boosted the hype not so much the developers because I didn't get really high expectations from what the developers said.

while i certainly think there are games this generation that have received an obscene amount of hype (ie, Halo 3, GTAIV, Gears 2, etc), i certainly don't hold it against them when they don't meet up to that hype.

i tend to go into games with rather tempered expectations. don't get me wrong, i froth at the mouth and can't wait to get my hands on it, but i don't think it's going to be the "BEST GAME EVER OF THE CENTURY ETERNITY!!!"

GTAIV was hyped to all hell, but i didn't expect much but GTA. i enjoyed the game, although i was only mildly disappointed that it didn't match up to GTA: San Andreas, but i expected it wouldn't. afterall, it was the first GTA on new hardware, and multi-platform to boot. in a sense, it was like GTAIII on the PS2: the first game of it's type on the new platform, and pales in comparison to later additions. i expect the next GTA game to release on the next gen platforms to be spectacular, like Vice City was to GTAIII.

Fable 2 was about the only game this generation that has genuinely disappointed me, and not due to hype, but to the fact that the game was such a marginal improvement over the first. even Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction vastly improved over the PS2 iterations, but Fable 2 suffered from weak visuals (Fable 1 was an AMAZING looking game, especially considering it's size and scope. i was hoping Fable 2 would kick it up a few notches, especially 3 years AFTER the Xbox 360 released. i was wrong), sluggish controls, and some of the changes to the game play were extremely weak; i liked the dog, but hated the removal of the map, shooting your gun with the Y button, and the bland 1 button combat. even the magic system felt weak. i'm still looking forward to Fable 3, since i love the series anyway, but once again, my expectations are tempered.

i enjoy a lot more games when i don't expect them to reinvent the wheel every time, and instead hope for an entertaining gaming experience.

falling for hype lands solely on your shoulders, and it's not the developers fault if you buy PR spin and marketing. is it an honorable practice? no, but what in the business world IS?

i personally enjoyed all of the released games on that list (barring Halo and Gears 2; just not my thing), but that has absolutely NO BEARING on the quality of those games.

every single one of them was top notch, and excellent experiences. to think that they would somehow transcend to something even remotely matching the hype heaped upon them is silly and unrealistic.

the problem isn't with the hype or the games, but with your own expectations. learn to reign them in to more reasonable levels, despite your excitement, and you'll be a much happier gamer.

One game comes to mind for me: SimCity Societies.

Was SO hyped to be a new take on a classic franchise, and it ended up being a complete mess. Nothing that held true in the past games (the micromanagement that made the other Simcity games so fun) were gone, and the whole game engine was way too confusing (I could but a shop, but unless I have enough creativity in my city, it would just SIT there?). And the things I needed in my city for a building to run never fit the building I wanted to plop down. Plus, rouge workers: they close down the shop and I have "3 hrs remaining", but nothing in the manual or the game tells you what you're supposed to do about it.

I spent about ten minutes with it and went back to Simcity 4 Deluxe Edition (the best Simcity so far). I tried to get into it again a few days ago, and once more, I didn't seem to be able to get into it, no matter how hard I tried.

Killzone 2 was overhyped (imo).. ok so it delivered on the graphics front. i didnt like the SP, till half-way through I didnt start enjoying the game. from the half-way point to the end i had a blast, but that doesnt redeem it's first half. I was disappointed.
Then the MP.. fun at first, but then due to the lack of an extensive online ranking system I dropped off the map after i hit general. Ofc, the weight of guns was annoying in MP, while it was badass in SP.

I'm glad they fixed that with a patch. But its too late for me :( I'd love to go back, but just dont get that feeling anymore. Some games started feeling like a chore? =/

Plus making a list of games that were over hyped and turned out to be crap isnt fun! It doesnt get the same attention as an article with hot games that people like and will be ready to defend ^_^

Halo 3 is one of the highest rated games of this gen and still sells extremely well so how is that over hyped? Killzone 2 is easily the most overhyped disappointed game this gen and maybe of all time. The game disappeared from the sales charts just a month after its release. That is the mark of a disappointed game. Because nobody wanted it. Everybody started talking how boring and bad it is and stopped buying it. Halo 3 on the other hand still sells well because it's a great game. Simple as that.

Oh, OK, so sales are what makes a game fun. I see how it works now. I finally get it. If your concern with sales is because of the community aspect for the online portion of the game, then LittleBigPlanet isn't an issue whatsoever. Over a million levels created by the community say "Hello!" I can log in right now and quickly find and experience a an hour's worth of incredible and inspiring community-created levels that I'd never seen before, and then do it again tomorrow and the day after that. LittleBigPlanet is not only one of the best games this generation, but of all time. It's impeccable what has been achieved with that game.

Wow. Practically every day I see something new in LittleBigPlanet that I didn't even think was possible in that game. There are entire stories told through LittleBigPlanet. Check out a level called LifeSpan, it tells a real and compelling story in a very cinematic way. Check out a series of levels called Cause And Effect. Not only do you not control sackboy on those "levels" but you cannot even see him. It's like watching a video, very unique and impressive. There's so much unique stuff going on with graphical presentation, stories, physics playgrounds, mini-games, platforming games, shooters, racers, whatever you can think of. If you think the variety of stuff you can do in Forge is greater than what you can do in LittleBigPlanet, then you just plain and simply have no idea what LBP really is, because it's clear as day which of the two games is more versatile.

For the most part this list is okay. But i do agree in that Farcry 2, there was something i didn't like about it. Killzone 2 it was overhyped by a bit and the guy says that it didn't revolutionize anything(which is true)But it may not have revolutionized but what it did was take the formula for all good fps games and made it better IMO. It did soooo many things right and i would say doesnt deserve to be on the list because it felt so right to play and overall the feel and style that it captures is very much original i think.Saints Row 2 wasnt overhyped at all and i think its tring to set its own path and its not tring too follow GTA.

Not sure what to think about GTA IV. It was my first GTA and, aside from the stupid socializing part of it, it blew me away.

Brutal Legend should be on this list. What could have have been (and for a lot of the first half, WAS) an awesome action/adventure game turned into an incredibly shallow RTS.

besides that, Halo3 was an "OK" game, I bought the legendary edition for 40.00 and enjoyed the campaign and on-line. definitely not a game you replay. and the multiplayer gets old after a while with all those annoying players that are more interested in singing rap and using foul language continuously.

That's all over now, my days with the poorly made 360 are over. 3 replacements and IT'S OUTTA' HERE!!!

what i find funny is how people say how big the halo online community is and that's why it's such a success... yeah when you have only 3 games (halo, Cod, and gears) to choose from for online of course halo is gonna have alot of people online. GTA 4 was my biggest disappointment. Wii fit is not a game guys so don't use it as a mean to bash Halo, GTA4...etc.

The reason that Wii fit sell like crazy because it banks on the mentality that people can get fit while having some fun. Who want to go to the gym when you have Wii fit. Who would like to sweat for like hours and only burn a few calories while you can just have some fun while burning calories. People are lazy guys....they want instant results with the least effort. Again, WII FIT IS NOT A GAME SO DON'T PUT IT IN THE SAME CATEGORY.

Overhype list:

1. Assassin Creed (look really good in theory, but actual game play just so repetitive that kills it)

2. Metal Gear Solid 4 (wow, what a way to explain everything...not to spoil anyone but u know what i'm talking about if you have played the game. Odd humor as well. I actually think it is the weakest of the Metal Gear franchise, MGS 3 is probably the best one)

3. Halo 3 (overhype, crappy single player and slight upgrade of last gen graphics. But the game play is actually very solid and really fun. I actually bought it just for the MP.)

4. Killzone 2 (overhype, especially the graphics...really, i think you guys only pay attention to the detail on the gun, and i hate the exaggerated death animation....common do people really do that when you shoot them. It also suffer from lack of story like other FPS games, except Half Life)

5. Too Human (after the demo, i knew it gonna flop...don't know, the fighting mechanic is just really bad. It is no where near Diablo like many claim it to be.)

6. Fable 2 (I actually really enjoy the game until the ending....it is like WTF moment.....although everything else is quite refreshing from the generic RPG, especially the dog. I stop playing it cause my dog die. Got to get those DLCs to revive it. Lionhead sure knows how to get ya money.)

Fail list. Only game I would agree with is Haze. Haven't played Far Cry 2 so I can't comment on that. Halo 3 was hyped up, but it really wasn't disappointing. I actually enjoyed the Saint's Row games more than GTA4. KZ2 was hyped, but it was a pretty good game. Aion is pretty badass imo. Whoever wrote this only listed one reason why they think the game is disappointing, fail. Some people wouldn't know a good game if it slapped em in the face I guess.

Killzone 2 stands out to me as a game that belongs nowhere close to being part of such a list.

I won't comment on Halo 3 gameplay because I haven't played it but we've all seen gameplay videos and the visuals aren't up to scratch this gen. You can't tell me they haven't done something right with the game when there's still so many people playing online even when the game has been out for so long.

Socom: Confrontation is underrated. Sony should have put alittle more polish on it but they had their Halo killers Resistance 2 and KIllzone 2 to work on. They dropped the ball on Socom.

I personally feel that PURE (xbox 360 version) maybe the most underrated game of this generation so far this. Online of offline it rocks. Hopefully with it being a pack-in game for the 360 holiday it will be enjoyed by millions.

Another game that maybe underrated is Tekken 6. Even though my wife is kicking my ass with a character that looks like a damn tree stump (Muko) it is a really good game. As far as my wife kicking my ass she grew up with the Ps1 and Ps2 playing Tekken. My Ps3 is my first Sony system. But oddly enough I have the 360 version which means they did a good job of bringing the feel of the game to the 360.

You notice that they whine about Sony not advertising their games but talk bad about Microsoft promoting Halo3. You know how far games have come when they have their own soft drink?? I own a Ps3 and enjoy it but if there is a game that is more fun than Halo 3 I would like to know what it is. I remember when the first one came out I was visiting family for Christmas. I got sick, so I stayed in the guest room for a couple of days. The guest room had an XBox and several games in it. I had read how amazing Halo was going to be so I tried it out. Yawn. Later, when Halo 2 came out, I had my little brother's XBox and copy of Halo 2 so I tried it out. Yawn. I can see why some people wouldn't like the feel of KZ2's controls, but to me it's far better than any of the Halo games. @y0haN - Why would Sony loyalists think GTA4 was a letdown? I saw GTA4 on a friend's 360 and the PS3 version looked and played better to me. There was pop up galore in the 360 version, causing him to hit buildings that suddenly appeared in front of him while trying to escape the police. I guess you mean the DLC, which didn't interest me. I enjoyed GTA4 more than San Andreas or Vice City (SA was better than VC), so I'm glad to see it wasn't on this list. Tomb Raider got no hype so it shouldn't be there.
