PC graphics market expands by massive 21.2% in 3Q 2009

BSoN writes,
"Jon Peddie Research announced its third quarter [July-August-September] report for PC graphics market and according by all accounts, it was a quarter to remember. The total number of graphics chips shipped during 3Q 2009 was 119.45 million - almost 8.5 million units higher than the previous record holder, 3Q 2008. A 21.2% quarter-on-quarter growth was the highest experienced one in nine years, meaning the consumers have reason to buy more powerful graphics again."

But i thought PC gaming was dying?

Nihilism5294d ago (Edited 5294d ago )

That's awesome news for pc and pc gamers, but it sucks that it took the hype machine to garner this much interest, maybe if microsoft hadn't paid no mind/not promoted dx10, there would be more dx10 games, better luck this round though. New DX, new OS, new series of cards ( and i9's around the corner), and of course, starcraft 2, good times ahead.

@Feral Gamer

you don't know what your talking about, any links to back up your irrational claim?, i have one.

I'd like to know where you get the idea that all these chips are used for gaming.

"When it comes to eternal battle of integrated vs. discrete graphics, netbooks are the reason for majority of market share. Jon Peddie was quoted saying "Integrated graphics in notebooks, which includes the popular netbooks, increased 27% over 2Q"

PC gaming is dying, except for MMOs.

it will be dead....

but consoles will die long before it.

no pc = no amd/nvidia..

that = to no consoles :P

It is neither dead nor in the process of becoming dead. Guess my purchase of a HD5870 helped out these numbers!

I still want to know why you think these chips are going into gaming cards..... the article doesn't even mention gaming cards

Maybe the PC market wasn't duying but simply transitioning to digital downloads. I think the PC market is one of the few free gaming markets... as in there is competition.

With onlive the PC market may be dominant but onlive will destroy any sense of competition. So I don't know if it's really a good thing.

Nihilism5294d ago (Edited 5294d ago )

I don't think it would be good at all, it would mean subscription models for games, even single player ones etc as you would not own anything you'd just subscribe to the service, so you would be trapped into a constant subscription if you wanted to keep playing the games. It would limit choice in games, because more devs would start to release 'online only' games and it would slowly force people to adopt. It would also kill the home GPU market, so there would be no more graphics push for offline/at home games. You would have to settle for whatever graphical standard onlive settles for, and you can bet any amount of money that once they have a hold of the market they wouldn't keep pushing graphics, their interest would be in bandwidth, and if they could tone it down with lesser graphics they would. It would probably replace pc gaming and console gaming and a monoploly like that would not be good for anyone. Personal computer and physical media FTW

If offline gaming, single player gaming, or even owning the hardware to run these games, goes out of our hands, i'm quitting gaming. I'll start working on my cd collection that has remained neglected for so long....and i only have 500 cd's and 2 5.1 surround systems, whatever shall i do :O

Lays down the path for consoles. So if Pc games go under, the consoles will start to suck!
But no, it's not dying. It's just for the elite.
