With their biggest franchise launching another installation, a price cut that either matched the PS3's or dropped some models below the PS3 cost, a winter bundle, and several other attempts MS could not catch the PS3.

HALO fever is the only thing that floated those numbers. That fever has subsided. We will continue to see the console everyone wanted, the PS3, leading in the US and the rest of the world through the new year.

@1.6 Well I'm sure some of that boost was from Halo ODST as well as the $50 rebate from MS off 360 Elites that started Sept. 22nd. Who wouldn't by an Elite over an Arcade for only $50 more?

PS3 was outselling XB in the states for months after its last price cut remember? It wasn't until XB cut the price again leading up to Christmas that they took the reigns back. Kind of like what might/could be happening here.

With all of the hype and smack talk about the PS3 slim (AKA-PS3 do-over) plus all the exclusives and the purchases for the PS3's biggest hitter in uncharted 2. I think the 360 did an awesome job, I mean with all that, and the manufacturing cost for retooling their assembly line, research and development of the PS3 slim, the PS3 only able to best the 360 by 140K in the US, Wow.

Good job 360 way to keep the fire to a minimum. A complete relaunch of the PS3 and the 360 only lost .0175 percent of it US lead; Good Job Microsoft. And then on top of the, the 360 still managed to stand tall in software sells with 3 of the top 5 and 5 of the top 10.
ODST selling 1.5m in 8 days,super.

Does that mean, not many games were bought with those 491K PS3 slims that were sold? Maybe it's true after all, perhaps people are buying the PS3 to be used as a movie player.

IDK, all I can say is great job Microsoft, once again you managed to keep Sony's damage to a minimum.

With Canada over half a million PS3 sales in NA.
Good numbers.

And Wii pricecut also moved a lot of Wii units.
Now, the most important thing, how well will PS3 perform in October, though with killer-app Uncharted 2 release.

Strong numbers for x360, which had ODST in September. Overall, x360 is doing pretty good, despite PS3 and Wii pricecuts. Though, x360 also had that limited 50$ pricecut for 2 weeks.

And PS2 is doing great, just great. So and DS.
PSP, well, it`s the best selling non-Nintendo handheld.))

This Christmas season will be definitely very interesting.

To 1.6, you said 360 sales went up 60%+ to the previous month...

You do know the previous month there was only 4 weeks of reporting, and sept has 5 weeks, so pretty much all consoles, with or without a price cut, would have went up by nature, of 1 extra week.

So the percentages is off, it's likely the 360 Increased it's percentage by like 20-30%.

I agree with you 100%, all of the HYPE (and there was a lot of it) about the PS3 slim, I figured it would sell a million in the US alone, especially the way the fanboys on N4G were ranting. @The warranty - ODST is probably the reason Kingme's comment is true. If it weren't for ODST (which according to you PS3 fans is just an overpriced addon) there probable would have been less 360s sold and perhaps more PS3s sold, who knows some people probably bought 360s instead of a PS3 because of ODST...lol

@Cyrus - No one is questioning why the 360 was up 60%, the fact still remains that it was. Who cares how many weeks were in it, it being report from one period to another. Talking about spinning.

@Xiphos - See that's your problem, you need to read to learn rather than to refute. The 2 million day 1 sells for ODST was for world wide not for the US only. Next time, read to whole article instead of just the title.

So I guess after all the hype train on the PS3 slim + price cut, that is with all it's guns out, it only managed to outsell the 360 a measly 150k. Respectable? Yes, but nothing like the 1000% we were hearing about. Overhype? Yes!

I knew ODST first day numbers were inflated like all MS exclsuives first day sales data which is almost impossible to get after just one day in anycase. It was reported to sold 2.7 million copies worldwide on first day and then basically nothing the reaming weekdays?. 1.5 million in NA for 1 week and then 1.2 million for the rest of the world for 1 week to make up the 2.7 million it was suppose to sell on first day???. You x360 fans should stop believing MS and especially what VG crap reports. It is stupid to think that someone could report on game sales after 1 day to begin with.

ps3 relaunch, slim ps3 + price drop with all the sony extremists screaming ps3 would easily double 360 sales with both at the same price and yet all ps3 could manage is 140k more than 360, just like I said, by Nov NPD 360 will be back to outselling ps3 again, and it will be alot closer in Oct NPD #'s, we all know the biggest sales happen in the first (week) month, after a price drop, but because of the holidays approaching sales will be higher than normal for all systems until Jan, with 360 leading the ps3 again.

These #'s for ps3 are not impressive when you consider that the ps3 had always been more expensive than 360 and therefore in theory alot more folks were waiting for a ps3 price drop as oppose to 360, so if what all the sony extremists having been preaching about "price" is true, how come the ps3 sales aren't alot bigger?...and 360 sales increased at the same time like 60% with the price drop which only affected the higher sku. Sony can't even consider another price drop for another 18+ months at the earlist, and micro is still holding at least a -$50 card that they can use anytime, but again just like I said before, they don't need to anytime soon, just ride out the initial ps3 sales spark and still win the holidays like every other holiday season before. lmfao, so much for those wild predictions.

ha, ha nobody's saying its a fluke, of course like any other price drop, sales increase...so the question becomes where will it balance out? If ps3 sales were double or in the 650k or above range right now then it would be logical to predict while they would go down after a price drop they still would maintain a healthy lead for awhile, now specifically because this price drop comes with the holiday season right around the corner sales will likely go up, but that will happen for all consoles, thats normal, now after that with ps3 sales at 490k just after launch but before the holidays it just doesn't seem like it will carry those type of sales in throughout next year like the wii did, wii was selling 600k-700k at one point even after the holidays and even when sales dropped they were selling 400-500k+ for a long time.

Microsoft sat on HALO ODST after it was completed for months. They waited because they knew that the PS3 price cut was coming. They took an add-on pack with recycled multiplayer, used advertising and well placed articles to blow it into a full game. Something even Bungie said it was not.

Then they chopped the price of more than one 360 model, put together a winter bundle, a special on another 360 package, flooded the air with Natal news, even put the HALO Reach beta invite news out and for what? Third place?

Every publisher, industry analyst, sales forecast predictor, and half mad gamer with an opinion have said the same thing. "If the PS3 price drops to $299 then it's game over." So Sony does that and people now want to think it is a fluke?

Look at the facts. You launch a new title from your biggest gun and chop the price of your console to either match or beat the PS3's cost and you still can't catch it?

Common sense says this isn't a one month sales trend.

The PS3 has the GOTY out right now and it's buzz has been rolling in scores that are off the charts despite the fact that PS3 games are graded against a higher, more stringent scale. That will show in the October NPD. This isn't the last AAAA game coming to the PS3 this year that is exclusive. Combine that with several high profile Bluray releases this Christmas and it's ho ho ho and Christmas cheer in the Sony camp.

I wonder what the excuse will be next month when the PS3 actually moves ahead of the 360 by an even wider margin....?

Heck, most people would have expected the Slim to be around 300k in the U.S. But not 490k. And if you add up the worldwide numbers, japan is 300k, and Eu could be another 500k. That's 1.3million in a month.

I'm not even going to try and argue or call people out for making outlandish claims about PS3 and it's numbers that would kill 360. 2012 is almost here and at this rate I don't ever think PS3 will pass 360 in hardware and especially not software sales this generation. The fact that 360 software takes the wii head on with a smaller install base needs to be recognized. WHEN IT'S SEPTEMBER'S SALES. Uncharted 2 wasn't even out then which I honestly believe is a huge system seller. Also, this is only for North America, so obviously the NPD sales don't include other territories.

I can't wait to see this month's sales, estimates are putting Uncharted 2 passed the million mark in it's first week. I already have my GOTY, I don't think Modern Warfare 2 can even touch Uncharted 2.

PS3 sold 140k more units with both the 360 and PS3 getting price drops and priced evenly, looks like that settles which console people prefer the most.. Halo 3 ODST sales are a little underwhelming considering previous reports stating it sold like 1.5 million in a week or something.. Uncharted 2 i think will be at 1.6 million units sold for next month

another intresting thing is Batman arkham asylym for the PS3 is still in the top 10 for the PS3 but nowhere on the list for the 360 and Madden 10 is only 40,000 more units sold on the 360 than the PS3.. I think its safe to say that the PS3 is definatley catching up in terms of software attach rates as well.

The only region the 360 still has a hold on above the PS3 is North America, we all know that and it's starting to become a smaller lead as the PS3s are flying off the shelves.

It's a better value, it has better exclusives and it has a much lower failure rate that STILL plagues the 360. A true gamer is seriously passing up an awesome buy now that the PS3 is $300, the 250gb model will only be $50 more and that'll be a way better value than the Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 Bundle that comes with a 250gb HDD, which will be $400.

I think many people would have expected a slightly higher figure for Sony but 500K is great nonetheless and surprisingly respectable sales for Microsoft too - it doesn't seem like it has cut much into their market demographic. The biggest tell factor however is to see how these figures change throughout the next few months. Everyone felt that Sony would have a boost in hardware sales but the fall numbers could be the most important in this generation.

MS also throw in a 50 dollar rebate. They also release by far their biggest game of the year, meanwhile the PS3's only exclusive releases were a rehashed Katamari and a remake of a year-old 360 game? And yet the PS3 still sold 40% more. I'd call that a big success. But you gotta hand it to MS: they pulled out all the stops to make sure they didn't trail the PS3 by much more. I was thinking why cant you use the sixaxis to control the gun control.like when you tilt the controller sideways you would see the ingame character do same by turning his gun sideways this is something that should be on default.but one thing that has to be an option is being able to press and hold a button and use sixaxis to point the gun anywhere around the screen freely without moving the head of the character or the screen whatever you want call it.the reason it should be an option is because I could see the player having a hard time being able to control the gun.And maybe depend how you rotate sixaxis you do a different meelee attack whoknows i would like to see it in mag or a patch in killzone.

Killzone 2 supports sixaxis shooting. When you're zoomed in you can just tilt the controller to make those minor adjustments. It's really a sweet feature that allows for a clean shot when the dillweed keeps moving around behind cover like a jackarse.

Nice to see Playstation doing very well. It's also nice to see Xbox 360 doing well. Around this time in the life cycle of the Xbox, it was not selling anything close to this amount of units. Microsoft's marketing blitz is paying off big time. I hope Sony does some strong marketing as well.

To be honest, I didn't like the Uncharted 2 commercial at all. The one about the girlfriend not realizing it's a game, it just seemed really corny and that announcer guy is the guy from Geico so he's annoying as well. Plus, the whole commercial seemed sexist against women, like she's too dumb to see it's a game. I'm not very much into the feminist movement, but even I thought that was a d!ck move.

I think 140k for a complete reboot of their console is a little underwhelming. When you factor in the completely new hardware, new price point, and revamped ad campaign, I was expecting more. Also, when you consider that the 360 has sold over a 100k more than the PS3 three months this year, without a price drop, the PS3 numbers don't look so impressive. The PS3 had a price cut to a new low price of $299 with a completely new model, the Slim.

The 360 already had a console at the $299 price point, the Pro, which was discontinued and replaced with the Elite model. So obviously the 360's "price cut" is not going to increase sales that much since the 360 was already available at that price point for years.

And you can't include the rebate as a price drop. The system still has a $300 price tag in stores. The rebate is an extra thing you have to mail in. It is not common knowledge to consumers.

No one was really waiting for the 360 to drop to $300 since they could already get it at that price. The PS3, on the other hand, has NEVER been at $300 and it had a completely new version launched. If you include Japan numbers for Sept, and these NPD number, the gap widens:

PlayStation 3 491.8K + Playstation 3 – 298,142 (Japan number) = 790 K
# Xbox 360 352.6K + Xbox 360 – 24,214 (Japan number) = 376.8 K

That's roughly a 400+ K difference between the 2 in 1 months, not including Europe/PAL regions.

Reading the comments here you'd think the PS3 outsold everything by at least half a mil. First month this year PS3 comes out on top and everyone goes crazy. There's always a big initial jump in sales when price drops and hardware relaunches come into play. However with the amount of push behind it this month, and Sony lamenting about "1 million consoles sold" at their TGS keynote, I was expecting the initial jump to be higher than only 140k more than their biggest competitor in the US. HOWEVER, PS3 could very well be on the roll towards market domination, you just can't make that determination based on one month's sales though.

But I guess those 13 months of 360 domination don't matter, because sales didn't count until this month, right? The PS3 was outsold for 13 months straight and it was fine, but now the 360 was outsold for 1 month (because of a $100 price drop) and suddenly it is doomed. In fact, the 360 is already outselling the PS3 again in weekly US sales, so the October NPD is going to look quite different.

Software sales are just as important as hardware sales and look at the PS3's continuing poor performance. Let's not even mention ODST's sales because they speak for themself, but there are 5 Xbox 360 titles in the Top 10, and only 2 PS3 titles. Aren't all these new PS3 owners buying games with their consoles?

First thing I ever heard of a console war was an article on the net about the upcoming PS3(was not out yet). The thread was full of 360 fanboys all proclaiming the death of PS3, before it had even launched. There were no PS3 fanboys in the thread because they didn't exist yet and after the launch was a ridiculous torrent of 360 fanboy blogs and stupid comments till 2008(this site actually use to be dominated by 360 fanboys back then).

I could care less which system sells more or which what game sells what. My favorite game is a multi-plat, modern warfare and I can't wait for MW2. Good news is I don't recall either or your names being fanobys, so that obviously doesn't apply to you. But there are many of Sony fanboys on this site that talk both sides of the coin it's embarrassing. I work a full-time job and do not get to invest the time I wish I could into video games, so I could care less about exclusives or what not. I own only a 360 at the moment, and I am pumped that UC2 looks amazing and I am excited for Sony and the success of the PS3 Slim in the last month. I enjoy when the competition is stiff, because that makes each developer and company strive to push harder, so when this kind of thing happens, it's great news for me. The little time I get playing video games; all I want to do is just play them, don't really care what platform or if it's a exclusive or multiplat. I am actually hoping ME2 goes to PS3 so PS3 users can enjoy that game. IMHO, I think that these sales for Sony will stay like this or even grow a little over the holiday season, but once middle of winter hits, I honestly think Wii will still outsell 360 and PS3 and the 360 will be barely outselling the PS3.

Personally, I think that this is disappointing for Sony.

What you don't understand is that the PS3 is already back below the 360 in weekly sales in the US. Of course there's a big jump in sales when a console has a $100 price drop and is finally competitively priced, but it doesn't last forever. And in the case of the PS3, it doesn't last for more than a month.

Hell, I love God of War 1 and 2 so much I can't wait for the third to come out and hopefully I will have some the money for a ps3. And also with Mass Effect I can't wait for the second. All I am saying is if you stick with a system you will lose period. Hell, I want to get a Wii for some Zelda and Mario action.

Great numbers for the ps3, its well deserved, great games coming and athe pricedrop was what was needed.

The wii is just sickening me with how well its selling.

the 360 did well and only a 140 behind the ps3 slim which isnt bad at all and the software went to the 360 all the way so the 360 is doing well.

The only thing that bothers me is this, even if the ps3 sells this well fo rthe nest 2 years and if the 360 sells this well too then that leaves a small advantage on monthly sales for the ps3, meaning if the ps3 only outsells the 360 by 140k or so a month it will take 2 years to catch up if not more and i truly doubt the ps3 will keep outselling the 360 or wii every month form this point on.

So while the ps3 did well it obviously isnt holding the 360 or wii back. but good numbers nevertheless and this was only usa numbers. good job all around for all 3 consoles.

There are a lot of great Playstation 3 games, so you will see a lot of games 1-2.5 million sales. So when people trash the 440+ thousand sales for Uncharted 2. (1st Wk.) and laugh....REMEMBER THIS, Sony dosen't have 2 great exclusives, surrounded by a ton of multiplats. Over 90% of Sony's great games are exclusives...developed with the BR storage and Cell Processor in mind. The competition has great stuff, but the PS3 is a better product. (YES, 360 has the most known and popular franshise.)

For IdleLeeSiuLung and all fans in denial, don't forget september was until uncharted, and the month for halo odst, and most important, don't forget npd is only for US, the xbox country, with all biased medias, japan, europe, etc, the difference will be enormous (a lot more than 150 000).

Almost half a million PS3's sold in one month in North America alone is a pretty big deal. It would be interesting to see a world wide total for September. My guess would be PS3 sold about 1.2 - 1.4 Million worldwide.

Any sane person will get a PlayStation 3 at this point. It has the best and most exclusives, best and most reliable hardware, free online, Bly-ray.
The ideal console really. At that price the PS3 is a bargain!
