Why Uncharted 2 Could Spell Bad News for the Games Industry (resumeplay)

ResumePlay writes: "Before I get into this, I imagine you saw the title and thought 'What?! This guy's clearly an idiot. Uncharted 2 is bloody awesome, keep your opinions to yourself before the wrath of the internet eats you whole.' Bravo, you fell right into my cunning, yet journalistically clichéd trap, you poor thing. I only just finished Uncharted 2, I know, I'm a terrible person. I couldn't start playing it until the Saturday afternoon and being such the social butterfly/part-time waiter I am, didn't get to complete it until today."

Nitrowolf25293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

snaz275293d ago

KazumaKiryu5293d ago

But isn't that what you xkids love? Graphics? Or is that sales? It's pretty hard to tell since your always changing your minds. Must be that time of the month.

Sony stands at this time at the pinnacle of world power. It is a solemn moment for the Sony Socialist Republic. For with this primacy in power is also joined an awe-inspiring accountability to the future. As you look around you, you must feel not only the sense of duty done, but also you must feel anxiety lest you fall below the level of achievement. Opportunity is here now, clear and shining, for both our systems, the PS3 and the PSP line. To reject it or ignore it or fritter it away will bring upon us all the long reproaches of the aftertime.

It is necessary that constancy of mind, persistency of purpose, and the grand simplicity of decision shall rule and guide the conduct of the gamers in peace as they did in war. We must, and I believe we shall, prove ourselves greater to this severe requirement.

I have a strong admiration and regard for the valiant Naughty Dog and for our wartime comrade, Guerilla Games. There is deep sympathy and goodwill in Sony - and I not doubt here also - toward the people of all MicroSoft and a resolve to persevere through many differences and rebuffs in establishing lasting friendship or if not, utter obliteration.

If the population of the Sony Gaming Commonwealth be added to that of the world, with all that such cooperation implies in the air, on the sea, all over the globe, and in science and in industry, and in moral force, there will be no quivering, precarious balance of power to offer its temptation to ambition or adventure. On the contrary there will be an overwhelming assurance of security.

If we adhere faithfully to the Sony Theology and Sony Ideology through the PlayStation3 and walk forward in sedate and sober strength, seeking no one's land or treasure, seeking to lay no arbitrary control upon the thoughts of men, if all Sony moral and material forces and convictions are joined with your own in fraternal association, the high roads of the future will be clear, not only for us but for all, not only for our time but for a century to come.

Thank you.
Hail Fuhrer Kaz Hirai and the Sony Socialist Republic!

Naughty Dog landed a kick on ever other developers crotch with Uncharted 2, specially Valve's for being an ass towards PS3 with their Bullshit reason to hate PS3.

BX815292d ago

Not on EPICS! It almost takes as long as Gears2 to get into a match. Uncharted 2 eats Gears2 in IMO! I love it, it's addicting but sometimes getting into a match can be a headache!

"In short: bad news for mediocre developers, good news for the consumer. Now Modern Warfare 2 had better be pretty spectacular. And I lied, it’s a fantastic thing for the games industry. Bring it on!"

deadreckoning6665293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

Uncharted 2 doesn't spell bad news for the industry. ODST sales and Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders have shown that the AVERAGE consumer doesn't require games to push boundaries. All they want is FUN. If the MAJORITY of people judged games on the boundaries they pushed then Uncharted 2 would be the best selling video-game of all time.

Honestly, Uncharted 2 may influence SOME developers to up their game, but as a whole it won't, AT LEAST not in this generation with an expansion pack that doesn't do much new sells 2 million copies in one day.

@Nycredude- Hey, if enjoying BOTH Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 equally means that I have low expectations, then I don't mind being the average consumer to be honest. Who says a game has to push boundaries to be fun?!

nycredude5293d ago

I guess you are one of those "average" gamers. Low expectation FTL!!

JsonHenry5293d ago

I love this game. Certainly one of the best platformers I have ever played. Actually, it is THE best platformer I have ever played. While I agree most devs will still be mediocre, I don't think that UC2 actually does anything "new" either. It is just a well polished, WELL WRITTEN!!!, and tight controls that pull this game off.

RememberThe3575293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

But we no longer need developers to do something new. With maturity comes judgment. As this industry has grown into it's own it is clear that quality is key. You no longer need something new to break down boundaries.

But all these reviewers claiming that Uncharted 2 doesn't do anything new, and giving the game massive praise, makes me wonder why some were so hard on Killzone 2 when their major complaint was that it didn't do anything new. WTF?

frostypants5293d ago

...aaaaaaaaaaand the guy's page is steamrolled. That's what he gets for click-whoring...LOL.

sikbeta5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

I thought we weren't AVERAGE gamers, you can't count the Average Joes, they pick up games based on the things they see in the cover, now we know why the UC2 cover looks amazing

Ravage275293d ago

so you wouldn't mind if say 3 years down the road, the industry has died and COD is pretty much the only game you can find? The average consumer isn't too smart, and that's why COD7,8,9,100(all using the same engine) will sell disgusting numbers no doubt, how long before everyone gets sick of gaming? It only took 1 COD game(mw1) before i lost all interest in the series,at the rate they pump out (yearly) cod games, i would imagine everyone will regret making the industry into what it is today.

nveenio5293d ago

You could understand that? I'm not disagreeing with him (I don't think), but he makes absolutely no sense because what he writes is completely incoherent. It's like trying to read someone's train of thought.

Speaking of trains--Uncharted 2.

DaTruth5293d ago

Modern Warfare 2 is the same thing as ODST... A $60 expansion pack, with a tacked on campaign!

zeeshan5292d ago

Modern Warfare 2 is more like MW1.5. The first teaser trailer of Uncharted 2 was mind blowing. It was like what? 20 seconds long? I don't remember but it was the scene where Drake was trying to make his way out of a snow storm and fell on the ground. I was amazed when I saw the snow, the enviornment, the blizzard, the wind, physics looked awesome and as it turns out, Uncharted 2 has now been called by many people as GOTY. Now compare this to MW2's trailer that we have seen and I can easily say that as far as I am concerned, I am SO NOT interested in it. The graphics look the same to me with minor enhancement. Note that I said, MINOR. The gameplay looks the same as well.

See, apparently, Infinity Ward are following that "Don't fix what's not broken" rule but improving graphics is not going to break anything. Now, you add Fifty Cents in the game and that doesn't bloody make a sense to me!

indysurfn5292d ago

Uncharted2 =Tomb raider 2.99!!!

likedamaster5292d ago (Edited 5292d ago )

...tell me one thing the game innovated. Just one. Uncharted did pretty much what Killzone 2 did... nothing new with great visuals. Uncharted didn't pioneer a darn thing but to each his own. The game is still decent.

By gaming industry they mean developers on ps3 who gave us LAIR,Kill Zone,HAZE,HEAVENLY SWORD which all these games Flopped so its time for these ps3 developers to come up to standards as Uncharted 2.

Sunny_D5293d ago

Everybody! Don't reply to this idiot. Don't even mention his name. He feeds off of your replies. If we stop replying, he will ask "Why isn't anyone talking to me?" Make him break down like a little B!tch!! HAHAHA!

Dimitri5293d ago

Take this b..... bubbles.

Even if those games you mentioned were "flops", then Uncharted 2 will be additional motivation for developers to go above that standard, which is even better news for PS3 owners, because we will get much better games, never before seen. Whereas 360 owners get the kind of games like Halo 3 ODST.

AliTheBrit195293d ago

I'm curious

Are you pp?

LMFAO It would be so funny if you turned out to be pp

CR7JUVE18975293d ago

Infinite Undiscovery
Too Human
Last Remnant
Section 8
Two Worlds
Velvet Assassin

You want me to keep going, because I have a ton more.

and yes, I have a 360 as well, but you are just getting to be downright pathetic

ZBlacktt5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

And MS couldn't even come out with one reliable XBox of the 7 different series they've used over 4 years. Lost 2 billions in repairs and will never have the chance to own a GOTY on a old format DVD disc. So what is a real flop here? You ever seen Heavenly Sword or Killzone2 on a big DLP,LCD or Plasma tv? Jaw dropping would be an understatement.

Preach it brother! It's time that some get their asses in gear and roll out the bigger, better, and badder games like Uncharted 2.

Jsynn75293d ago

Gametrailers: "bu..bu..bu.bbut UC2 teh no originality!!" Can't wait to see when MW2 comes out and the score it gets. It's good to see UC2 kick @ss out there. I hope this is a wake up call to the industry to start stepping up their game and produce true next-gen games. I think it start with KZ2. That game should definitely start lighting fires under some lazy dev @sses. It's a good time to be a gamer.

Currently playing Drakes Fortune on crushing, next will be to replay Among Thieves, but I'm sure it still holds up today.

P_Bomb1444d ago (Edited 1444d ago )

Recently re-platinumed 1-3. Uncharted 2 aged better than I even expected. I enjoyed it more now than I did a decade ago. It’s more polished than 1, tighter than 3 and Yemen in 3 was gorgeous. Shambhala out-prettied Ubar though. 60fps w higher res’ made for a damn good rerun.

Abnor_Mal1444d ago

Question: When you say Uncharted2 aged better than expected, are you talking about the original PS3 game or the remastered collection on PS4. I ask because I think that a remastered version of the game would look and play better than the original.

I doubt that the original ran at 60 frames, how many years old is the remastered collection anyway.

I need to replay the original trilogy along with the collection, not a fan of the collection trophy of beating levels in a set time and don't think the originals required that for platinum.

P_Bomb1443d ago (Edited 1443d ago )

@abnor_mal
It’s true that the remasters have upped the resolution and given it 60fps, but the base game is the same. The art design and base textures/physics/ animations are the same yet still look contemporary. More-so than UC1 which isn’t as tight, or UC3 in some cases which I found a bit clunky in close quarters.

UC2 level design was a great evolution in bringing the verticality from the jungle into rural/urban settings while maintaining smooth animation transitions. Drake still moves better than the ginger in Star Wars Jedi. Outdoor areas are better lit.

UC2 also has more action and better pacing imo, which helps when replaying a game 10 years later. Kept me engaged.

You don’t need to time trial for platinum. They stuck the speedrun trophies in a seperate extended dlc category so have no fear.

MadLad1445d ago

I thought the originals were good, but not great. I understand that puts me in the minority here. That said, Uncharted 4 was freaking fantastic.

Profchaos1444d ago (Edited 1444d ago )

Yeah I understand the hate for 4 prior to playing it I was firmly against it and felt like 3 wrapped things up already but now after playing it I think it was the best in the franchise.

Now I look back at two and I feel like I'm playing an on the rails shooter everything is so tightly scripted including the infamous train scene you simply can't make a mistake

Rimeskeem1444d ago

I think Uncharted 2 is a lot like AC2. Both games took the idea and basically improved it in every single way.

Movefasta19931444d ago

Uc2, AC2,Halo2, Soul calibur 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2 , Dishonored 2 and a few more. The only negative thing I have against uc2, and imo it annoyed me,are the blue apes, uncharted 1 handled the super natural far better.
