The author talks about the game controls being sluggish in the intro to the game. In the intro, Drake has been wounded so the controls won't be 100% responsive. You're climbing up the train while being injured. Of course it won't be 100%. Drake has a hole in his stomach, and doesn't move fast. I found the game to be great and accurate for his limited movement. I moved beyond that, and I found Drake and the opening areas of the game very acceptable. Maybe it's me, but I am loving the new game.

Uncharted may have a few problems in what otherwise is one of the closest games I've played to 'flawless'. But one thing for sure is one of its flaws is NOT controls. The game handles beautifully and elegantly.

The controls are FIIIINE, you just need to get good at them. I'm only halfway and I already got Head Shot Expert and 100 headshots (played Uncharted 1) and i'm NO pro (i just LOOVE head shoots =D)

So theres no excuse. The controls are fine. They feel like you ARE Drake...not as if ur on rollerblades (many games do that =/)

Just got this, and I can safely say that this game 100% deserves the hype. The transitions into cutscene are seamless, you can't even tell it's happened. Multiplayer is awesome just like the beta, I like the new stealth gameplay (very cool, kinda like MGS).

Words can't do it justice, you HAVE to play this game, and if you aren't getting it for whatever reason, you are retarded.

I went into UC2 thinking it was going to be more of the same with an ever so slight, if any, increase in visuals with just a different treasure to hunt in a different location.

At first I thought I wasn't too far off. Now that I am half way through the game I am completely blown away. IMO I think it even eclipses Killzone 2 graphically. The story, voice acting, animations, sound, graphics, online modes, co op, etc and so on. This game HAS IT ALL! So far it's the best game I have played this generation (again IMO).

Oh well I'm off to play some more UC2.

I will go to say that the graphics amaze although not so intense as KZ2 or Heavenly sword there are times that the game eclipses those games so it does have 10 graphics and of course gameplay and story acting are all 10's.

No game till know has brought this much Cinematics to a game and at this adult level and quality.

This is a personal preference, but I had to increase the movement sensitivity to the max (to the right) within options. Motion is smooth as butter like any FPS after I did this. It may not fit the bill for everyone, but I certainly found it more intuitive for me.

Other than the few occasions where i went to the wrong side of cover, this game is as close as it gets to perfection. I've played many games this gen, and i say that UC2 is the BEST i've played thus far.

SP is every bit as awesome as it was hyped to be, and MP is soooo much fun! It definitely exceeded my expectation

I certainly don't think that the game is overhyped by the media, No, I don't believe so, it's been getting great reviews and overall the feedback from the media has been well deserved and incredibly positive.

HOWEVER, I do think that a certain division of fans here and at certain other sites are overhyping the game all this nonsense AND I DO MEAN NONSENSE about sites showing bias against sony is just utter rubbish. A game getting in excess of 9.0's out of 10's all round the board doesn't show bias.

Rather than pitching a hissy fit about a 0.4 difference in review score, and trawling internet board calling people's integrity into question and professionalism, why don't you go an play some more games?

When you start the game Drake is already shot in the stomach and beaten within inch of his life. The fact that your movements are limited is part of getting across how dire his situation is.

The intro is the only part of the game with sluggish controls, in fact, there were actually parts later in the game where I felt they should have limited your movements even MORE because of how injured you are.

its a great game yes, and it seems to get better the further you go, the first level was cool, i wasnt blown away by the snow, but i loved the way it stuck to drake, the second level was dull, hated the stealth and the level and enemies looked rough...BUT

now im back in the jungle with sully, and that part blows me away!
naughty dog obviously have more strength when it comes to the green stuff, its all very pretty and the lighting really ties it all together.

i dont think its perfect, but much respect to naughty dog, they seem like they really care about there product.

I mean I didn't expect that big a jump over the first (which used to be my favorite game this gen, only now it's been trumped by its sequel), but wow, it was definitely an improvement. Seriously, as gay as this might sound: this game isn't like playing a game, it's an adventure. Truly amazing.

That being said, I didn't even need to read beyond the description on this one. When he failed to understand why the controls were "sluggish and unresponsive" in that first part, it shows me he either didn't play through or is a moron. Considering the shape Drake was in (lucky to be alive even), I wouldn't expect him to be able to just freely gallop around like nothing was wrong. I actually thought that was a nice touch.

Yeah, I'm really confused by that statement as well. Perhaps he's mistaking 'sluggish controls' for 'relative speed of movement'? I mean, Nathan is injured and moving at a pace that is not as fast as usual but also not at a pace he would be moving at normally with a gaping wound in his torso.

So far, I've found the controls to be really nice, fluid, and an improvement over the first game. The only 'cover' issues I've had so far were in that not everything could provide you cover, but that was because it was at points in the game where cover wasn't necessary as well. So far, I haven't had any issues at all with combat, in fact I've been wondering if I shouldn't have started out on Hard to start with so far, but I'm guessing it will get harder for me as I progress further into the story so I'm sticking with this for now.

I have to agree. This is what sequels should be like. This was a great improvement on the first. Even the adventure is proving to be more awesome than the first. Plus they upped stuff like the graphics, they've balanced out the gameplay more this time around, the action is just intense and combine that with the awesome story and cinematics which seamlessly slide right into the gameplay. It's almost like playing a movie.

Our special edition copy of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves finally landed yesterday. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited to play a sequel but such was the quality and fun I had with the original Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, that ever since the sequel was announced I’ve been waiting rather impatiently to play it.

Firstly let me point out this is not my review of the game; this will follow later when I’ve delved somewhat deeper into everything Uncharted 2 has to offer; this is if you like, Uncharted 2: initial impressions.

To put some perspective on this, consider that here we have a game that has already seen a great deal of reviews; each universally praising this as the best game on the PS3 and some as one of the best games ever made. It’s also the sequel to what was arguably the best game on the PS3 (it’s certainly my personal favourite).

As I climbed up the train I was initially impressed by the graphics but within minutes I was becoming frustrated due to the controls. They felt sluggish and unresponsive and this marred my initial time with the game.

Now I’m fully aware that this sluggish behaviour in this section is probably mostly deliberate but I still found it somewhat frustrating. I’ve just kicked off a much anticipated blockbuster sequel, got the adrenaline going through the cinematic introduction and now here I am wading through treacle whilst trying to figure out the right path to go.

This leads me neatly onto another area where Uncharted still feels unimproved. Essentially the path through Uncharted and (at least so far in my playtime) Uncharted 2 is linear. There’s nothing wrong with this in the slightest and certainly I would argue that in many cases being linear actually makes for a better story driven game (ala Half Life).

The problem though is that with a linear game you expect as a player to be presented with a reasonably straight forward path and in Uncharted 2 it too often feels like you are struggling for direction in the opening levels, particularly if you like to explore and find the hidden treasures.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect neon markers showing me the path but in a game where cheap deaths are aplenty I do expect it to be a bit more obvious where I can and can’t go. Uncharted suffered because of this and so far its sequel suffers too, perhaps more so.

The problem is primarily inconsistency; in some areas you can jump a good ten feet across a gap; in others barely two. And in a game where the path isn’t always immediately obvious this can be bloody annoying. Uncharted was similar in this respect but so far its sequel seems worse and this is partially due to the graphical improvement – the grippable ledges and other (some new) clambering means all blend in better to their environment making them hader to identify.

Although I found the first two levels underwhelming, I did perk up significantly when I hit the third! Back in the jungle and back with Sully; suddenly I started enjoying the game much more.

The first two levels primarily centre on the two newer associates of Drake; Harry Flynn and Chloe Frazer. Its early days I admit but so far I’ve not really been that taken by either hence why I was genuinely glad to see Sully re-appear. And in terms of a battle of the babes, at least in my opinion, Elena is far easier on the eye than Chloe!

I’m still looking forward to playing through Uncharted 2 (and a full in depth review will follow soon), but based on what I’ve seen so far I can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed.

There’s no question the graphics are superb and I’m not doubting the production values of the game or even trying to say its not going to be anything other than excellent.

But key faults with the first title haven’t been addressed and a game can’t be perfect when it has control and direction issues, which is perhaps why I can’t quite grasp where all the 10/10 and perfect reviews are coming from.

Perhaps further play will reveal these answers to me but whilst I know I’m going to have a great and enjoyable ride with Uncharted 2, the opening levels have also shown me that I’m also going to experience some frustration and some disappointment because its issues mean it will never quite be the perfect game I want it to be.

i was saying b4 this game that Batman was my front runner but i am 9 hours into U2 (wont touch online till i beat it) and im saying this now... Sessler was right! Best single player game i have ever played. Its stunning. The gameplay is tight. The gun battles are awesome. The story is great. The pacing of the game, not something i often think about, is perfect. Starts at a nice mellow pace then puts you into some of the best set pieces ever seen outside Hollywood... in fact its better then 99% of action movies

Definitely not, this game is fantastic. I liked how the areas weren't always completely obvious where to go. If you're going round a 3000 year old temple which has fallen apart, there isn't going to be a nice path with flowers and butterflies for you to skip down.

Gears of war 1 Id say lived up to the hype. Good campaign, great multiplayer.

Gears of war 2 however did not.

Uncharted 2? Ive only played 3 chapters but from what i can say, it lives up to the hype. Plenty of replayability and rewards. Really looking forward to getting into the multiplayer as well.

Gears of War 2 had a MUCH better campaign! The acting, the almost mission-like set-up...it was all perfect!

Gears of War got extremely repetitive. Gears of War 2 stayed fresh the entire campaign!

Halo 1, 2, AND 3 are all overhyped. We were playing games that looked and played better on PC years before Halo came and stole the glory. That is why I can't respect Bungie anymore. They didn't redefine a genre. They rehashed Tribes and slapped Microsoft's approval on it.

Uncharted 2 is NOT overrated. I guarantee you will love it.

Gears 2 did have a great campaign ill give you that but the big selling point of gears 2 was its multiplayer. And in that aspect, it was inferior to the first's. The game was completely unplayable because of the matchmaking for people outside of the US. The reason so many people played gears of war 1 was because it was one of the only games which let you pick the match you wanted to play and you could judge it on latency.

And you didnt have to wait 10 minutes just to get into a game. The multiplayer worked in the first one, and they blew it by trying to copy halo 3 multiplayer matchmaking.

Uncharted 2 is my favourite single player experience i think iv ever played. Which is a pretty big statement since i pretty much buy every game that comes out lol (except sports games. Eugh hate them lol). I actually felt for the characters. I dont think iv properly had that b4 in a video game. The way the story is told is incredible. Uncharted 2 is not overhyped. If anything its underhyped. Ask the average joe on the street what the best game out there right now is and they will say Halo: ODST. Ask a gamer without bias and they will say Uncharted 2. I've been a 360 gamer for 3 years, and owned the original xbox for since its launch. There is no game that has ever com out on the 360 that matches the total gaming joy that is Uncharted 2.

Uncharted 2 will be bested (perhaps by an xbox game), its called progress, but dont take away for the moment this little miracle, dont cheapen this moment.

I too disliked the slow beginning climbing sequence (reminiscent of the scene in Modern Warfare 4 after the nuke and your character is crippled, who wants to lumber along, especially right at the start?).

But the rest of the issues were EXTREMELY minimal for me and would certainly not thwart a perfect score. If missing a jump or hand hold every now and again in a game with a cover system, climbing, hand to hand and gun combat all twisted together with a fluid and layered animation system, et cetera is enough to drop a game's score, then no game would EVER get a perfect 10.

Would anybody really prefer invisible walls to keep Drake from falling, or the usual barbed wire fence, pile of burning rubble and so on? And it's not like the checkpoint system isn't pretty forgiving..

I have only played through the first 2 levels, but I can say to me this game feels 40 times smoother than Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. On the first level alone even as Nate is trying to move through the snow you see the visual improvements. The way his body moves through the small space between the train and his reactions from the heat and the huge wound in his stomach. During the 2nd level the smooth controls are back in full effect since he is remembering what lead up to his injuries. The new cash system is an interesting touch (don't forget to press "SQUARE" in the store if you have an Uncharted gamesave). That alone shows that Naughty Dog's creation deserves a higher than 9.3 (GT cough cough) score.

I have played and bought a lot of games this generation from: Gears of War 1&2, COD4:MW, Halo 3, Uncharted, MGS4, Wet, Batman: AA, Infamous, Crackdown, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Assassins Creed and this is by far one of the best titles of this generation.

Overhyped no not at all ... I can say a couple of the games I just mentioned are overhyped, but that's a different topic.

i played Uncharted through once and wasnt impressed by anything else other than graphics, which is really not enough for me. i remember playing Tomb Raider on PS1 and being way more amazed, by the level design and puzzles and enemy variety etc... Uncharted 1 & 2 are partially epic because of: A+ presentation, A+ visuals, A+ animation, A+ cutscenes, A+ sound effects, A+ music.

Then you have the solid gameplay, controls, and the mixture of elements such as platforming, gunfights, action sequences, puzzles and boss fights.

This game blows everything but less than half a dozen games this generation completely out of the water.

As for you, everyone has an opinion. There are people who enjoy being defecated on, and people who enjoy physical pain. Of course someone out there isn't going to like Uncharted2, MGS4, and all of these other gems. However, running around spewing your opinion and trying to make people feel bad doesn't help anything. From what I've seen, the majority of Uncharted/Uncharted 2 owners are extremely happy with their purchase (me included) and definitely confirmed that it went beyond the hype. Just becuase a non-Uncharted fan says otherwise does not change the fact that the game had stellar reviews with user responses that is just as consistent to the hype.

Do I love it for the sake of loving it, no? We all saw that E3 demo, we all ANTICIPATED for it. And now that I've got it in my hands I can truly say the experience is unrivaled at this console generation (don't take my word for it, go for the reviews and the majority of the user comments).

I don't think there was enough hype for this game. Unlike other titles, the majority of the hype came after the reviews rolled in. Also, I thought Naughty Dog made a great improvement on tightening up the controls.

But I do agree with him on others points in the article. When I'm looking for treasures, it's tough you have no idea which ways are the right way/wrong way. Areas that look accessible are usually not, and treasures are in some of the most unlikely places. In trees, not on the linear path. But this no where takes away from the gameplay experience itself. It may be frustrating now trying to find all the treasures without help, but certainly my first play through of the game lived up to the hype. Every turn was a new twist, and they always put Nathan against ridiculous odds, and in the worst situations all the time, and it made the game exciting the whole play through.

It was good, don't get me wrong. Really good, actually, but a lot of issues remained the same from the first game, mainly that there were far too many enemies put in to artificially inflate the length (which by the way, was no where NEAR 1/3 longer than the first, I beat this game in 7 hours and the first Uncharted in 8, so if anything it was shorter)

The pacing was way off. Fighting to way too long at points, especially all the stuff before and after the train to the point where I almost stopped playing because I was getting sick of it, then the platforming/puzzle sections went on too long as well. They needed to break up sections more instead of lumping all the platforming together and all the shooting together. And the "sci-fi twist" was ridiculous.

Good game overall but yes, way too hyped, especially from people who are just now jumping on the bandwagon and haven't even played the first. I almost feel ripped off after just buying Demon's Souls for the same amount of money the week before. That was money more well spent in my opinion. Not saying Uncharted 2 was a bad game but it certainly wasn't worth the hype. Although the first Uncharted was technically inferior, it had a certain charm to it and I think I liked that one better.

I've only saw 1 uncharted commercial this week compared to all the Ninja Gaiden sigma 2, Halo 3: ODST, Brutal Legend commercials that aired like every 10 minutes are so it's ridiculous. Its 10/15/09 and I just purchased a brand new PS3 slim along with a copy of Uncharted 2. In my short time with the game. The visuals are STUNNING!! And I am playing on a 32 HDTV that is only showing it at 720p so I can imagine how much better it looks in 1080p.

I played up to the 3rd chapter Borneo I think its called. Wow ..the jungle feels alive!

For me its a solid game that is basically a Tomb Raider clone on steroids. It has the cinematic feel to it with the cutscenes and comments the characters make. I have to say it is like im PLAYIN a character in a movie.

No game is gonna live up to the HYPE that ppl put on it. I didnt fall for the HYPE myself. I got what I MYSELF expected.

The subtle things I noticed that make this a game that had some thought put into it is....how Drake will shade his face when walkin towards fire.

Overhyped by the media? No, I don't believe so, it's been getting great reviews and overall the feedback from the media has been well deserved and incredibly positive.

The sluggish is part of ND coding. It's a way to surprise the player due to environmental causes. HL 1 did something different to the usual gameplay when you go to Zen. Gravity is low and you can jump longer distance. It's an effective way of immersing the player.

um, Nathan is severely wounded, he is climbing slowly and sluggishly by design. even when you finally get to solid ground and start moving around, he is stumbling and shuffling very slowly. he can't even run.

once you get past the intro and begin the museum heist, Nathan is no longer wounded, so his full abilities are available, and they control like a dream.

sometimes i don't know why game designers even BOTHER to try and do things differently, because people like this guy don't even understand the difference between game design and poor performance.

there is simply no appreciation these days for games that are detail driven.

in any other game, a severely wounded character would prance around like nothing was wrong, and yet Naughty Dog decides to imbue some character into their game, and Simple Jacks like this guy don't get it.

i found the intro to Uncharted 2 awesomely paced. our here finds himself in a rather precarious situation, and considering how gravely wounded he is, you instantly form a connection with him as he literally STRUGGLES to save himself by climbing up the frozen train car. it's brilliant, and rather unconventional as far as sequel intros go, where other developers want to immediately establish how much bigger, better, and more badass the sequel is to the original.

believe me, after the museum heist (about an hour into gameplay), you quickly understand how much better Uncharted 2 is over it's predecessor in every way. by the time you make it to Nepal, your jaw is most likely stuck in the dropped position, and at the game's conclusion, every other game is spoiled for you.

Naughty Dog is like an expert masseuse; they know how to take care of you like no other.

games like GTAIV and Halo 3 were overhyped.

unlike those games, Uncharted 2 met and EXCEEDED what hype it had, which wasn't much compared to the copious amounts of hype thrown at GTAIV and Halo 3 before their launch. after release, all fell rather quiet, honestly (that's not to say the games are bad, not in the least, i love GTAIV, and Halo is Halo, but the level of hype was at near godly proportions).

Uncharted 2 had just the right amount of hype and expectations for it, so when it bested that hype and expectations, people are rightfully impressed and freely spouting it's praises.

believe me, after beating the game twice, and playing through a third time on Crushing, i'm 100% convinced that the people praising Uncharted 2 are doing so because they genuinely think the game is worthy of that praise, and are not just saying it to "play it safe," and go with the herd.

it is a masterpiece in the same way games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Mass Effect are masterpieces; they simply excel at what they do, and show an intense love of the craft above and beyond the mediocrity of companies like Activision.

But after playing and being totally immersed in Demon's Souls, I have come to realize that not all games have to be such a graphical powerhouse to completely overwhelm you.

In Demon's Souls you have a cool art design (that makes up for the shear horsepower of graphics), a challenging yet rewarding combat system, and a creative online interaction. This game has grabbed my attention and makes me think about the game long after I have thrown my last controler for the night.

I am agreeing with you that the bar is being set very high for the "summer blockbuster" type games, but there are some other developers that can take a completely different approach and succeed as well.

Over hyped? Thats personal preference isn't it.

It's not a game I would buy simply because I don't find replaying this type of game fun, so for me I will be renting it just like UC1 and thats all.

They might of swayed me to purchase it if they had released a proper demo rather than multi-player as the multi-player holds no interest to me whatsoever.
