PS3 Cross-Game Chat Coming In Firmware Update?

PlayStation 3 owners may be getting a long-requested feature with the console's next firmware update: cross-game voice chat.

While the feature has been rumoured to be in development for months, a post on the official PlayStation forums today may have inadvertently confirmed its imminent release. "Naughty Dog Dev" ReklissAbandon wrote in response to player requests for enemy spectating in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves that PlayStation 3 cross-game chat might make that request unfair.

"I think they wanted people to have fun and ejoy the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. Finally...ive been wanting this since 2007. Now all Sony needs ta do is:

1. Make the Playstation Store Accessible from any game, Home, and the Internet Browser.

2. Have a Sleep mode like the PSP(Leave for a lunch break and come back and start from the same point in the game that I left off)

3. Have some type of plug-in that ill enable the Internet Browser to be compatible with Adobe Flash Player.

4. Be able to watch ur videos with buddies in ur home apartment. Users can post videos and they can appear on a the big screens in Home(tips and tricks) for everyone to see. Overall more user generated content for Home.

5. Get home out of beta and streamline it(no loadtimes when going into areas) and more user customization of Home itself.

6. A party system like Uncharted 2 but for EVERY GAME

7. Make Dreamcast games(Shenmue 1 and 2) available on the PSN.

8. Make ALL if not MOST PSP games available on the PSN.

9. Give us dynamic themes that are ACTUALLY worth buying and appeal to a wide range of people.(I have the Wipeout HD one and its AWESOME and its FREE in the Euro store)

10. Trophies= monetary gain in Home. The more trophies you get the MORE things u can get in Home. The harder the trophy is to get, the better the reward!

11. ORGANIZED Voice chat in Home.

4. The ability to put photos of urself in ur Home department.

You can in fact do this... for $2 or $3 that is. You get the picture frames in which you can upload any pic of off your hdd. It's pretty cool. But what Home needs is games with some trophies that you can earn & have it so that you don't have to wait in line in order to bowl or play pool, I want to be able to play right away with my online buddies.

I mean, when you go to the chat menu right now, it's there as an option, just greyed out. Obviously it's coming.

the ps3 does download as you are playing games.....you have to be playing singleplayer. Meaning the game shouldn't connect to the net at all. I tried it while playing lumines. Give a spin to see for yourself

cross voice chat is cool, but i prefer custom soundtrack. i only did it a few times when i had the xbox, but some of my games on the ps3 just scream for custom soundtracks.

I prefer playing games that don't have you wanting to mute the in-game music. Luckily most PS3 games have incredible audio, the blu-ray definitely doesn't hurt with the lossless sound data. I can't think of a single game from my PS3 lineup (many many games) that had me wanting to listen to something else.

Besides... there are many many electronics that will allow you to play your music, and most games allow you to turn music off. I'd prefer using my ipod dock.

Still, soundtracks have nothing to do with network capabilities...

Cross game chat would be nice, I guess. It's one of those features people like to drone on and on about, but I just don't see it being used much. It also concerns me with regards to a game like Demon's Souls, where such a feature would undermine the developer's intentions. And, of course, there's the aforementioned issue of people giving away teammate positions in FPS games. Developers should have the option to block XMB chat between players on opposite teams in a given match.

If you don't see it being used much, you've probably never used it on Live. It's an invaluable feature man and one that's sorely missed when one moves between systems constantly. Party Chat especially since I have a lot of family and friends who play when I do and so we all join a party and talk sh*t while playing games. It's a social thing, one that Sony definitely needs (as Home isn't cutting it).

You don't stop them from using the Cross Voice/Party Chat for that, but those are the breaks and you adapt accordingly. It's something that you deal with if it happens since if you're on your game then any ambush they could plan with a voice chat wouldn't even matter anyway. I play on PC all the time and you can be on Teamspeak, Vent, Skype, whatever and it won't matter because if you're good you're going to get them anyway.

Why does PSN need a fee? The whole upper hand PSN has on Live in a big way that it is free. If it can add features like this for free thats better for gamers. this is the last feature that once in XMB, we wont have to listen to the whinners about not having it in XMB...
I rarely use this feature on Live..
When I am online, I am to play games, not to chit chat, hence its a feature that didnt mean much to me, but has been one of those issues that one system has and the other does not, so its bent out of shape

I don't think that is the case all the time. I'm 26 years old and while it's fun to chit chat during a game I can always call the friends I have in the non virtual world. Yea, there are peeps on my friends list that I talk to on the reg, but I can also call them I need be. What does age have to do with it? I'm old enough to pay my own cell phone bill.

i love to send messages to my friends via voice messages on live its quick and easy. gets to the point.

But the cell phone excause is lame because you can call all 5 of your friends if you are in a party. this makes lots of sense and makes it easier for gamers to talk to there friends and what not.

I'm sure it is quick and easy and I am sure you enjoy it, but that doesn't mean that someone else has to enjoy it as well. It also does not mean that someone who doesn't care for it has no friends.

When I was younger three way calling was the best thing ever. We could get 6 people going at one time. What it ended up being was a bunch of noise. Maybe xgc isnt that bad, but I personally can do, and have done, without it, but again this is just for me.

Sony mucked up my not giving enough memory to the Ps3 and not making the game OS more like a PC Operating system with strong multi-tasking ability(ability to run multiple applications such as a game, web browser, music player at the same time).
