60GB PS3 Sales Spike 700% on Amazon.com, #3 Top Seller

In some promising news for PS3 owners, it seems the $100 price cut of Sony's PS3 has caused a spike in sales on Amazon.com. Take the jump for the top seller list.

In my opinion, Sony First Party/ Second Party developers = best in the world.

The reason I bought a PS3 was because 99% of my PS2/PS1 games library was made up of first party/second party games for the exception of SquareSoft.(and DMC and MGS from Capcom and Konami respectively)

Regardless of what you might think Insomniac and Naughty Dog are 3rd party developers. Just because they only develop for Sony consoles doesn't mean they are somehow financially supported by Sony. Certainly Sony does comarketing with them, but that's just good business. Yes, Sony publishes their games, but that doesn't mean that they own the studios (1st party) or fund their development (2nd party). In a recent interview Ted Price even said they could develop for other systems if they wanted to, but right now they don't want to. Get your facts straight :)

Agreed as well. This is just the initial spike that happens after a price drop. Anyone that WAS saving up for a PS3 will now get one if they wanted one, but after everyoen that wanted one gets their hands on it, sales will subside once more.

I would say so. I bet sales will go back to normal (or a slightly increase pace, I'd estimate 10% more sales then before the price drop) in just a week or 2. The next sales spike is next price drop, or in the August/Septermber months when all the first party titles hit.

This proves what many people - myself included - have said all along: the PS3 is too expensive. The fanboy's tried to tell us that it will sell none-the-less, and that it's worth the price, but I said it time and time again: it's a simple economic principle: the higher the price, the lower the sales. Yes there has been an article on Europe getting a definate PS3 price cut as well, even though it is selling well in Europe and Japan just not as well as the Wii, forecast says that it should be going down to £375 maybe £350 to get rid of that £400 barrier, and thanks to the person who helped to get a bubble back i don't flame just talk about what i know...

What Sony should worry about is: PS3 sales rise on Amazon but xbox 360 elite continues to sell out. Which is not a good sign, the 360 elite still sells out even after the PS3 price drop announcement. So if Sony can't stop the 360 from selling ata steady pace they are screwed and will never get close to Microsofts installed base. THere sales will plummet, again. You PS3 fanboys are in the same boat you were in when the system launched at a $499 ad $599 pricepoint, atleast with the elite you get a high quality HDMI cable and 120gb hard drive.

I hope this is more than just a great big spike followed by a long period of decreased sales, yet I'm still skeptical. Back when the PS3 was released in Europe, everyone began chanting that "Sony's back!" because of the record sales, and then pretty soon everything was back to sloooow again.

So, yes, the PS3 is selling, and I think that's fantastic. But the PS3 is still a long way behind this trend will end quite quickly.

If consumers were any more interested in a $499 console than they are a $599 console then the 20 GB model would have been flying off shelves last Christmas. Personally I believe that this sales spike is being driving by the impending removal of the EmotionEngine.

This is a direct result of the price reduction and nothing more. There are not huge issues with the emulated software and in fact reports say that 80%+ titles are working and some have been fixed with firmware updates.

Also, anyone who is buying the PS3 now could probably easily hang on to their PS2's if need be.

the elite thing was a restock issue that was apparently evident from the short amount of time it stayed on there clearly not in response to 3yr warranty. However this increase is clearly in response to the price drop. This is also evident from the sales increase in ps3 titles.

Its about perceived value. This makes it the same price I paid for my 360 - $399 plus $99 for the wireless adapter...plus it comes with a Blu-Ray player. I love my 360 - and plan on getting buying an average of 1.5 games per month for the rest of the year for my 360, but I also really want a PS3 eventually.

I'm excited about the price drop because it means I'll get one sooner rather than later.

I'm also very interested to see how MS responds. I've been saying there will not be a price drop until after Halo 3 - since it alone will sell consoles, but if there was a price drop, and one could play Halo 3 and GTAIV on a $349 console, well it would be a tough choice for any true non-fanboy gamer...the next six months are going to be fascinating to watch as far as the industry goes.

Awesome. Finally, maybe the 360 will see some real competition. But Sony better not win until they at least equal the performance of the X360's standard feature set. Slowly but surely, they've been catching up. But it's a LOSS for gamers, not matter how many layers your rose tinted glasses have, if Sony win and do not equal the brilliant media centre and software development support of the X360. It may have seen a sales hike, but units sold != better quality. And I deplore you as ACTUAL gamers to take that into consideration. I still consider the Dreamcast > PS2 in terms of quality vs. quantity, as just about any real gamer does. And saying that this is only good for gamers is also somewhat dumb, as it just means 1st party software (the good stuff) will be pushed harder to meet release dates, meaning lax quality control and standards, as in games that should be excellent will be forced to downtone the pizazz in order to sell hardware, meaning they may never see their true potential for greatness. We've seen this time and time again, and I would like to think that gamers have learned this lesson by now.

The reason the PS3 is selling is that there are actually PS3s are available, which (and I'm sorry to say, because I do love the thing)is because there were very few sales up to about 12 hours ago.

Keep in mind the 360 Elite is sold out and the Wii can't actually be purchased if you don't wait in line for 2 hours.

So, let's wait and see. Sony fanboys said "Wait until 2008, then we'll see!" so it's not that much to ask for me to say "Wait for a week, then we'll see!"

You are suppose to have as much supply in the stores as possible. Nintendo can not make enough for the demand. Microsoft can not make enough elites because they have production problems and they have the defective problem...remember the defect in the xbox 360 effects all 3 skus of the xbox 360....unless microsoft redesigned the xbox 360...they will still have a 33 percent defect rate. This is one reason why xbox 360 sales have gone in the toilet and the PS3 has skyrocketed today....the wii is just not in stock anywheres, which is crazy..since nintendo supposely made 4 million wiis before the end of 2006...they should have saturated the supply chain with wiis now..they are holding wii back on purpose to simulate demand...Once the Ps2 drops to $99...that will eat into some Wii sales...the wii has no good games comming, except for 3 good ones by the end of the year...

The Ps3 is gonna rule this christmas...we will probably get to 8 million sold by end of 2007..

This is good news for Sony, but I wouldn’t get crazy. I’ve been watching the stock quantity on Amazon and it looks to me like they sold about 500 units. That’s nice, but nothing to get crazy about, especially given the weekly sales numbers have Xbox 360 doubling up on Sony PS3 every week.

500 units at $500 each would make any product a hot seller on Amazon.

Also not that there were 3 HD DVD players (and no standalone Blu-ray players) in the “Movers & Shakers” list, but I don’t hear anyone going nuts about that.

You'll see a spike in 360 sales as well when they officially announce a price cut. We already saw a spike when they just announced a 3 year warranty. It'll be interested to see what happens when they announce the price cut. Halo 3 and Mass Effect, should help spike sales as well. When MGS4 comes out, the PS3 will have another spike in sales too.

I'm seeing lots of arguments and numbers thrown around here. The way I look at it the PS3 is now on a much more even playing field assuming Microsoft maintains their current price point. While I would like both systems the reality is I'm going to have to choose one for the time being.

If you're strictly talking value the PS3 @ $499 takes down the Xbox 360 Elite. For one, Wifi is included, a $100 value in the Xbox 360 world. Another is high-definition disc player. Xbox owners who want Blu-ray have to buy stand-alone costing a few hundred. If you want the HD DVD player it is still going to cost around $200.

If you want to add that 120 GB HDD and HDMI cable to the PS3, the 120GB are going for $69.99 on Newegg (PS3 now at $569) and HDMI cables can be had for $15 also on Newegg which now puts you in the final price of around $584.

Actually it matters. With more consoles out there the pressure is on Sony to give us more and better firmware updates, 3rd party devs get their eyes on PS3 and will make a bigger effort to use it´s powers, blu-ray will most definitely win the format war and so on...

Make yourself believe that if it makes you feel better. If you are refering to more sales as in more customers putting pressure on Sony you are really smoking something. I'm sure Corperations feel pressure from customers...right... Thats an Illusion, they feel pressure from big lawsuits maybe. Money means more to them than you, accept it.

Of course this matters. Sony is starting to grab more of the market, however trusting amazon with their sales figures is such B.S. The point is, the minute developers see that PS3s begin to occupy more households, they will start churning out more games, who knows, some xbox 360 will make the jump to Ps3 (i'm not saying Halo or gears, but bioshock, we can only hope I guess).

Second it matters because PS3 is not only a gaming system, but a video format promoter, namely blu ray. So more PS3s will give alot of companies an excuse to back the blu ray format, and end the format war, however, how much of an impact having 2 standards is having on individual companies I'm not sure.

Lastly, Nintendo and M$ will get a nice wakeup call, and they'll try to sweeten the deal to sway more customers in their favour. Expect some hasty and descisive action from both companies as they try to convince the consumer.

I doubt Sony will be under pressure from customers, quite the opposite actually, I think they will be relieved that they system is finally rising to the top. If PS3 holds steady at #1 for now (even at amazon), it's a good indication of things to come.

So there, 3 perfectly good reasons as to why this is in fact important.

To Xbox fans this will be worse than there Xbox 360 burning there houses down due to faulty components in there 360, what's funny is my pal was going to show me Fozra 2 yesterday and he got the red ring of death lmao, he already had 1 faulty Xbox 360 caused by the red ring of death, he finially got it to work, he showed me Fora 2 and i can say the graaphics were sh!t and that's the truth, gamesplay mabye ok, but it looked like crap for next gen. Lost planet is nothing more than a falsley advertised game is so average, so what does Xbox 360 have that's really better?
