World's first mod chip for PS3?

Crave: Sony has been quite successful in deterring game piracy for its PS3 console so far. However, this may be about to change if a rumored Belzar mod chip turns out to be true. Besides supporting PS2 and PS3 bootleg games, the hardware-based hack promises many other functions ranging from stealth mode (read: To make the chip harder to detect by Sony) to region-free DVD/Blu-ray Disc playback.

It is a saturn. I had it modded to play imports cause I like me some JP shmups especially when the saturn went belly up in the states.

I am more curious to the chip opening up the cell to homebrew.

What is the big deal about hacking the Ps3? It's already region free. It plays all types of media. THe older ones you can add a different OS. And the exclusive will probably soon be all using at least a 25GB or 50gb on the disk. Try downloading that to try to play a game.

It makes it more of a grey market than just black, but it still isn't fair to the people in Japan who create the shows which you watch for free. Import the shows, bought fairly-- then download them with fansubs. That's what you have to do if you want to not be a pirate. If you want to be a pirate, fine, but don't pretend that just because you can't watch it here, it should be free for you. These days, most of us live in an almost global market. You're (probably) not in a country that stops you from shipping in anime from Japan, though it's true that you can't play it in your DVD player. (I mean, unless we're really talking about shota and loli. Certainly that's not airable in the US... but then, considering the US government seems to think it's kiddie porn, I'd not be downloading it to my computer, either.)

As for the fansubbers... Have the majority of the torrent sites that have gone under the radar been shut down? Nope. That doesn't make them morally in the right, it just means they're not worth it to shut down. And the fansubbers used to always say that as soon as the show came out in English, it was your obligation to buy it-- it was part of what you agreed to when you paid them the shipping for the tapes. (I don't know if they still do. It's over ten years since I was in that culture, and we didn't have amazon.jp. Or bittorrent, for that matter.)

I have an original 60GB with Linux installed, but without certain privileges and more importantly access to the GPU (RSX) it's rather limited. Also the "homebrew" cant have any impact on the PS3 OS.

Playing Genesis games on my PSP was awesome and I can't see how anybody got hurt by that.

I also played a lot of games I had no intention of buying(and barely played them). And only one I went out and bought! I don't really like PSP games and mostly use it for music, videos and PS1 classics. Once GOW released, I stopped bothering with modding!

With automatic firmware updates, it seems like more trouble than it's worth to mod these things. You can't exactly complain to the manufacturer that your modded box broke because of new firmware update if that happens a month after you modded it.

- most copied games in the world

It had:

ALL of the great exclusives

ALL of the 3rd party support

MOST of the userbase.

And while the PS3 is almost released, hardware-pushing games like Shadow of the Colossus and GOW I & II were just being completed.

Now 2 1/2 years into the PS3's cycle and "supposedly" harder to develop for. We've already seen games that's pushing the system like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, MGS4. Not to mention the sales. Had the console been modded I don't think any developer would find it profitable to push the PS3 if 1000 or so pirated copies will be released considering they have none Halo/GeoW type fanbases that sells.

Wow, what a weak post and "article". As more than a few people have pointed out, this was a fake from many weeks ago. The guy was trying to get advance orders to cash the money and never delivered.

The reason these posts and fakes keep popping up is because the Xbox 360 has been cracked wide open and it is starting to affect software sales. I know of at least 10 guys that now have modded 360's and they all stopped buying games. One guy told me he had over 20 titles now. And the mod is brain-dead simple, doesn't even need a mod chip. Funny how this never makes the "news 4 gamers".

The world isn't perfect as many know and one could argue that because a specific console has an option to get free games [even if its illegal] then "cheap" people would get it because of that.

Even if there was a perfect 100% stealth modchip that adapted to all future firmware updates... it would be moronic to use such a device at this moment. Bluray burners and blank Bluray media are far too expensive to be experimenting with burning copies of PS3 games. Imagine making a few Bluray coasters, you'd be pissing more money down the drain than you would be just buying the game straight up

But some people are hackers by nature and would get a kick out of being able to accomplish this. It would come at an expense that I wouldn't be willing to pay, especially with no guarantee that your money will be well spent.

Anyone caught online using the mod will get banned from PSN, or worse. I wouldnt be supresed if sony sent a code to brick your ps3 if you had the mod. I think they did that with the psp and its well within their rights.

I've got a mod chip in pretty much all my old consoles. Living in the UK up until this generation meant we would miss out on a lot of Japanese or American games or have to wait up to a year to finally get to play what the rest of the world is playing.

Up until now, that hasn't been required for the PS3 and that's one of the reasons I love the console. I heard that Need for speed shift is actually region locked and Sega have a number of titles they are working on to have locked. Guess they really don't want us playing Yakuza outside of Japan.

99% of my PS3 games are all from the UK, Looks like I'm going to be forced to import Demons Soul as there is no release here. If games start getting region locked more and titles don't hit all regions I can see more and more work being done on hacking the PS3.

Keep the console region free and in my eyes, there isn't a need for the chips.

Yakuza3 IS coming fella so don't worry about that. Otherwise I almost find myself with an identical story to yourself-every chipped/modded console I've owned was because we didn't get all the Japanese games and US games in the UK that I wanted to play(even when they had English subs or dubs ffs!)-even this gen I've played a few 360 games early on my mates modded console(SO4, Tales etc)but I've yet to ever buy a pirated game.

In the same boat with Demon's Souls as well, sadly, and find it incredible that our continental cousins just won't have a version in any of their languages to play but there you go, it keeps happening this generation with ames I fancy!. Well not quite the same boat as I already would have the asian/English version if some lovely bloke from HK hadn't ripped me off over Ebay(Play.Asia had stopped shipping here for some reason-still dunno why they stopped or if it's for good). Even if you do download a PS3 game, its still gonna be costly to write it to a disc. A blu-ray player right now is pretty ex, followed by ex blank blu-ray discs.... Its not cheap. And who the hell is gonna dll a 50gig+ game?! That's like half of my HDD capacity, and you would probably need another 50gig to unrar it (if its zipped). No thanks, I'd rather buy a game.

It sounds like good news, but even if it actually works who has the money to spend on recordable blue ray discs considering how expensive they are atm. The only way that it would actually be worth it is if the prices come down on recordable blue ray discs considerably(like maybe $.25 to a $1.00 a disc at normal retail price). And besides I don't pirate games that I don't own until the games and the console in question is not supported anymore and/or the games and the console in question are not commercially available by the company(s) that made them.

I read an article that stated that the only reason the ps3 hasnt been hacked yet is because you can install linux on it. what that means is the linux hackers dont need to hack the system to install linux on it. so now you cannot install linux on ps3 slim and so the linux hackers are going to hack it. it seems to be true. and firmware updates cant change the way the system operates so whoever said that, your point is null and void. xbox can do the same thing

The only way a modded PS3 would be worth it is if it made it so you could play games directly of your hard drive without a disk. Otherwise, why pay for a blue ray burner and disks. Might as well buy the game.
