Heh, I didn't even think CoD4 was "king" when it really WAS king back when it came out (TeamFortress 2 and Unreal Tourney III for me, at the time).

But I digress. CoD4 is a certain sort of game. It's just as easy to say that Resistance 2 or Killzone 2 are the "kings" of PS3 FPSs for very similar reasons the author listed.

If Killzone 2 had controls like COD, then it wouldn't be Killzone 2, and it wouldn't be as good. Killzone 2's controls are aimed at realism, COD feels very unrealistic after playing KZ.

If you are looking for realism, then maybe KZ2 is your cup of tea and probaly so are simulators (which I think personally in most cases are boring). I just went back to playing CoD4 last night and my memory came back from how good this game was. Personally I prefer fun over realism.

Halo 3 is as unrealistic as it gets, but it is darn fun!

KZ2 in my opinion doesn't hold a candle to CoD4 other than in the graphics department.

Killzone 2 for me...Cod 4 was and still is great...but killzone 2 simply takes it with ease imo...people still complain about the controls...whatever...they never bothered me, and now they have that 'precision' option that makes it much closer to CoD 4 anyway...so you have the option for which you prefer...

but no multiplayer game this generation can match the intensity in killzone 2 imo...medium sized maps with 24-32 players are just absolute chaos...but in a good way...no cheap grenades, no cheap perks (assuming the server creator did the default removal of rocket launchers)...and they finally nerfed the assault class enough to make it acceptable...

no going prone and sniping with an LMG from across the map...no real way to camp at all actually...no lobbing a grenade over a building because you know where the enemy will spawn at the beginning of the match...no where near the connection errors...far superior visuals...and much better community support and features...

killzone 2 is easily the multiplayer game of this generation so far imo...but I knows its not as popular as cod 4, and won't be as much as MW2...but whatever...to each their own...i've put tons of hours into both games, and killzone 2 is definitely that one that has me hooked...

Oh please, COD4 just looks like a last gen game compared to Killzone 2. I can't even play anymore twitch shooters like COD4 or Halo or anything after playing Killzone 2. They feel so old fashioned and boring. Killzone 2 raised the bar ridiculously high. It's a shame that it didn't have hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing behind it so it could become the next Halo.

This is completely personal opinion:

CoD4: Very high story replay, very easy to connect/play with other people online, and has a very realistic story that actually made me think of certain things in real life

KillZone 2: An online simulation to prepare for online, very challenging final level, a big ending climax to lead to a 3rd game (Which I would buy), made use of the Six Axis in ways that made the game more fun

Both have a ranking system for online, both have a story I'd play over and over without getting bored, both have their own separate way of displaying how the game is seen (CoD has realistic people and KillZone uses an ingame Engine). They are both winners in my book, its all based on what your looking for in an FPS.

If you go to controls in the option menu and switch the controls configuration to 'Alternate 2' they are identical to COD MW.

I've been playing it like this since the KZ2 was released. After playing MW for so long, I just find this control setup more natural.

I played CoD4 due to everyone else playing it. It's good and fast paced but not "twitch" fast (although still arcady). Then I got Socom:C, it's more suspenseful and slow paced, but very tactical and sophisticated. Then I got KZ2, it's right in between CoD4 and Socom, perfect pacing with lots of tactics.

The only people who couldn't get into KZ are those who want to rambo a match and hope their team wins, or who didn't take the time to check all of the control options available. I actually like KZ2's default controls the best... even more so before they dumbed it down for the kiddies.

On top of that, KZ2 and Socom's server support is head and shoulders above CoD4's. No random hosts ending games just as they begin. Rarely any lag, even in the midst of a base raping (possible only in KZ2). More mature gamers and more headsets in KZ2/Socom which really makes it so much more enjoyable. CoD4 may have the numbers, but king it is not... besides MAG is on the way to prove who the real king is.

You die way too fast, the controls are not responsive, the dull textures are hidden by a grainy effect and motion blurr, it's not HD, you can't customize your weapons, no perks,

O my brothers, I have no reason to defend or attack any game. I've completed both but, put simply, one provided far more enjoyment than the other. As I'm merely re-iterating, COD4 MP is as close to perfect as I've ever experienced. The SP is short but ridiculously sweet. KZ2 craving period = a week. COD4 craving period = a year.

How many people are playing each game these days? I wonder if all of the PS3 bratchnys are even playing KZ2 anymore, for they seem to spend the majority of their time controlling 'Agree/Disagree' ratios on N4G.

Had Killzone 2 come out in 2007 it would have had a bigger impact than Call of Duty 4. I really think being delayed to 2009 when a number of stellar FPS experiences had been released the past 2 years, hurt the impact Killzone 2 made on the genre.

Man that twist in Bioshock is something Ill never forget, totally blew me away and only few game moments hold a candle to it (this generation).

Bioshock is memorable. It has the fantastic narration, the freaky tone and the storyline is superb.

CoD4 has excellent gameplay. Just overall (at least on single player) such a balance to everything from variety of gameplay to controls. In my opinion the controls are among the best in FPS.

KZ2... well the only thing I remember from it was the graphics. That's it! Nothing memorable about it, controls where supposedly realistic (and I really had no issue with it until I went back and played CoD4 and realized how much further ahead CoD4 was), characters were boring and the story line was lame.

The one thing I did like about KZ2, was the six axxis use for the sniping which is somewhat similar to CoD4 hold your breath....

Of course that is my opinion, but if sales has a say CoD4 outsold nearly every FPS out there to a considerably smaller user base on all platforms. That speaks volume!

Now...I'm a CoD4 pro. I mean I get helicopters from straight knifing...deadly sniper...versatile with EVERY gun but I have to say that CoD4 is in no way the best FPS on PS3. Why? Because 1. CoD5 came out...and 2. Killzone 2 came out and 3. It's too noobish.

Well, CoD in general is easy to play. I got really interested since CoD3..and CoD4 is basically CoD3 with an actual online set-up and modern weapons.

Played a lot of COD4, KZ2, and R2 online and they are all great and memorable but my king is still Resistance online. Fast paced and fun was what it was all about. In the early days of PS3 it was a saving grace for the system because it actually showed people the PS3's potential. Honorable mention for Call of Duty 2. That game almost convinced me to purchase a 360, until I saw Perfect Dark. haha.

3rd person or first person it wouldn't matter because in COD4 you actually have to have shooter skills, but in Warhawk all you need to do is line that first shot up and shoot from there because it holds your place.

Warhawk is better for large area combat because a good size match allows you to travel from end to end on the map and that's awesome in itself, but to say it's a better shooter is suicide.

I went back to this game the other day after playing countless FPS's that have been released after, while it still a good game, it has a few flaws. The major one being how easy to to kill/be killed because of the aim assist. It also has some amazingly small maps to where you can launch a grenade and get 3 kills in the first few seconds of match play. It also reminded me of all the online issues it has because it doesn't have dedicated servers.

yeah agreed. My only gripe with COD4 was the snipers in small maps. Literally spawning and getting shot before you could even take 5 steps. The level with the barn was the worst ever for me. I just stuck to the houses, anywhere in the open was just nonsense.

I really dont get why people can't see that COD is the same thing over and over again just like need for speed. Killzone 2 is better in everything exept addictiveness. If I was in charge of IW then there will be probably a delay in the game because so much stuff will be on the disc(2 for DVD) so for the 360 one disc will be story mode and co-op online and the other one will be split screen and online(for PS3 owners 1 disc is nessecary). IW said that MW2 is the best f***ing game they can do so if that is what they can do at there limit then they need to stop making FPS becuase I was not impressed. I was like WTF is wrong with the graphics they suck. I love how people bring up the graphics as if that mattered. Obviously TONS of people still play the game on both consoles so it doesn't matter to them. COD 4, for me, is a much more fun game. COD 4 is a good game but honestly it gets really boring fast running the same maps killing people who use Juggernaut and with no new maps. KillZone 2 feels more realistic to me for the fact no Juggernaut plus maps are upgraded every few months. I mean Treyarch release new maps for CODWOW and its the only Call of Duty game I know that still gets maps. I still play COD 4 time to time but after I got the 50 cal sniper rifle it just got boring and personally I might trade it in.

Why does this article purely isolate the PS3 in regards to its library's inferiority to Cod 4?

My honest opinion is that SOCOM Confrontation is a million times better if all you want to do is duke it out with the military and terrorists in beat up war torn areas. COD4 craps on the majority of shooters, but I'll continue to come back to this same monkey wrench and you can disagree all you want but there's nothing like SOCOM...end of story.

EDIT- already with the disagrees:) Well I knew when I made the comment that nobody on N4G would back me up and that's because if you were a "real" SOCOM Confrontation fan odds are you wouldn't be here right now and would be online playing the game and taking the game way too seriously. I have found that SOCOM to the hardcore players is like religion. And as you can tell since I'm not playing right now, I'm about the middle of the road on my skills. I'm better than the daytime players, but I really can't F' with the people who obviously live on there.

I will agree with this. I'm really addicted to SOCOM:C. It's very well balanced and the maps all have brilliant layouts. It's got good community support also. The only thing I wish is there was a better way to join and invite friends to your game. It's kind of a chore.

On topic:
Which FPS is king is subjective to opinion really. When COD4 first came out, I really enjoyed it. But since KZ2 has come out, I've stopped playing COD4 completely. I love the different style, and unique class system it uses. So I'd have to say I prefer KZ2 over COD4.

I was the same way as the guy in this article. The bottom line is COD will never disappoint since Modern Warfare came out, it set the framework for all their future shooters to be spectacular. I'm addicted to COD and I'm a COD fanboy.

I beg to differ.Warhawk is brilliant,MGO is an acquired taste but unique and also exceptional,LBP resides in a class all it's own,to play it is to understand.KZ is a truly rewarding experience,it takes some time to become proficient but proficiency has it's rewards.R2 is another great game,it can be hectic at times and spiral into absolute chaos at others but it is untouched at what it does.

I agree that Warhawk and Little Big Planet have a great online feature... but Killzone 2 does not. At all. Not with 11 guns, 5 multiplayer modes, 10 maps, and 7 classes. No. That is bare bones content.

I would take quality over quantity any time, and even then, those are impressive numbers for the multiplayer component. The core of the gameplay is extremely satisfying, so much so that any additional feature is a bonus - and it is not lacking in features by any means. At all.

Its just got a better feel then anythign else. I had amazing games this weekend with all the new maps. Very intense. I highly recommend the "high-precision mode" for aiming too.

is imo the best fps so far. i mean the campaign and main multiplayer are pretty much equal in both cod4 and cod5 imo. but WaW is better because A) Nazi Zombies, B) Co-op Campaign/zombies, and C) WW2 setting (disagree all you want, i love the ww2 scene in games)

Killzone is way more hardcore of a game than COD. COD is more accessable so more people can be good at it and have fun. Killzone not so much. It is much harder and far slower. If you dont pace in killzone you wont last a minute. I prefer killzone because it eliminates the luck factor from multiplayer and rewards you for being a good player. In killzone if you dont play as a team, you lose, there is no othe way to put it. COD not so much you can go it alone and do just fine but Killzone pretty much forces you to work together. I got top ten percents for the week twice in killzone. I could have gotten more but I had to send my PS3 in for repairs.

COD4 took shooters to a new level no doubt about about that, but as always things progress and Killzone 2 for me is the pinnacle of first person shooters. Everything about the game is immense, the graphics and graphical effects are unmatched while the feel of the game is exceptional. Online play is so well balanced that good team work always wins the day, and it has that addictive quality that is rare in games these days. COD4 was good, but after going back to play it recently I turned it off after ten minutes and went straight back to Killzone 2. Like in Warhawk (a much underated title) I think new players find it so tough from the beginning that they lose patience and jump back into their comfort zones, but if you stick in there you'll realise what an exceptional addictive and rewarding experience it actually is.

To me CoD/MW is still the best modern military FPS there is. If you get together with the right group of people for a clan and work together it is a incredibly FUN game.

The ps3 version game control plays a bit faster than the 360's ,but the XBL/360 servers are much more reliable.Both them look great and can't seem find any faults in the game other than that.

Heres to MW2! I will be awaiting eagerly to play the next step in this series. CoD/W@W just didn't cut it for me...and I hope that theres NO zombie mode in MW2!!

I tend to find it's a lot to do with learning curve. Yes it's a great game and i'm looking frwd to mw2, but online everyone's about the same. any1 can pick up the game and be 'good' at it. hell you can equip martydom, prance around and get kills when a grenade drops out ur ass when you get knifed.

the point being that any1 can be good at the game and that can take away from the experience when you've sniped a guy using juggernaught only for them to sprint round the corner for the 100th time. So a game that means any1 can be good at it is likely to be popular compared to say UT3 where i've seen ppl join rooms before and never get a kill... i wonder if they stuck it out to get good or went back to playing cod4 where their chopper gets them 15 kill streaks.

I really like CoD4, especially the single player. All that different missions... are really great. Online...no dedicated servers, this sucks. Too many players with high ranks, better weapons etc. so as a beginner you have no chance! This sucks too.

Killzone2: best gameplay! (yeah just put the controls on Alt2 and High Precision Mode and it will rock baby), best graphics, best action, best explosions, best character movements, etc., etc. And online it is the king as well!

Let's see how MW2 will be... ;-)

I enjoyed COD4 a lot! I'm actually considering replaying it (haven't in a while) but it definatly is not the best FPS i've ever played. There are many out there that made a far greater impression on me.

All these in my opinion are far more KING than COD4 (dispite their age)

I prefer K2 over Call of Duty 4, mostly because i find the action in K2 more intense as it doesnt cater to a campers gameplay.

Everyone wants to get the helicopter, so theyll camp get there kills call in the helicopter, which in turn adds to there kills. then all off a sudden they are the FPS king.

While in K2 you earn all your kills, and not even those turrets and airbots, get that many kills for you, K2 is just too damn awsome action packed from start to finish of each match.

Call of Duty 4 never overtook Halo 3. It may have once when the game was first launched but it clearly was not for very long. It doesn't take a smart ass to know that Halo 3 is much better than Call of Duty 4.

To be honest KZ2 is way better than Cod4 but only game that really dominates both is BFBC it was so underated and it was a great game
