EA: 360 maxed out, PlayStation3 isn't

OXM UK reports that EA feels the Xbox 360 has "maxed out" while PlayStation3 has not.

The comments came from EA Games Europe's Senior VP Patrick Soderlund, talking to OXM during E3. However, despite feeling that PlayStation3 hasn't been maxed out yet, Soderlund also suggests that Microsoft has the current advantage over Sony.

"I think Microsoft is on a roll right now," Soderlund says. "They're doing really well. If I was Sony, I would have a headache, to be honest."

Although I agree that the PS3 is more powerful then the Xbox and should have it little more room to improve, I don't care, they are both great consoles with great game. We are on 4th generation games on both consoles now, and we are officaly in "current gen" not "next gen" anymore. So even though the PS3 may have a little more breathing room, it aint that much an they are both reaching their limits.

If it worked that way and this imaginary power were to get squeezed out of the PS3 like a lot of you think, we would have games like Infamous in full 1080p and zero draw-in. Killzone 2 would be at a solid 60fps and running in native 1080p. And MGs4 would never have any frame dips, and be playing at a locked 60fps.

I love my PS3, but there is no magic power to be found in it, its a games console with comparable power to the 360, even though it has a hardware egde over it, kinda like how the Xbox one had over the PS2, and look at the amazing games some people did with the PS2. We have been seeing the limits of both of our big "current gen" consoles. I don't expect a dev to find some magic processor in there an magically make PS3 games look like they are from the future. What's left on both consoles are tricks and smoke and mirrors to use their limited amounts of crayons and draw something amazing with them. thats what I like to see.

EA has been called every name under the sun by most sony loyalist and aside from a few really good titles their quality is questionable as its obvious they duplicate the same games year after year with a lack of innovation and only marginal improvements, yet whenever you say something even slightly negative about micro/360 it is taken as the word of god on n4g, but the public isn't dumb we can see beyond the hype, games like Alan Wake says hi, SC: Conviction says hi, Lost Planet says hi, Forza 3 says hi, hell even RE5 surprised alot people graphically but really it shouldn't in every other gen games always just keep getting better.

Have they attained any growth in console sales or attach ratio? No, they've remained stagnant.

Have they been truly innovative in the past year? No, they just release the same kind of stuff over and over.

Was their E3 the best? If you think that one motion control device makes their conference the best, I feel sad for you. I thought it was supposed to be about the games, and what did Microsoft really reveal at E3? I'll tell you what. That they have always, and will always, leech off anyone they can for their success instead of building it from the ground up themselves.

Their greatest achievements seems to be in how they are able to make games go multiplat, and that's about it. If you were to take the whole 360 experience from its inception, you will see that Microsoft's biggest focus was getting 3rd party games to come onto their console. Rather than innovate, rather than define themselves as a brand, they decide to take the previous identity of a more successful brand and add their own little twist on it. Nintendo and Sony are going their own ways, redefining themselves, while Microsoft is content with leeching off the previous successes of their competition.

If you are expecting leaps and bounds over what we are seeing exclusives PS3 games doing right now, I am sorry but you will be disappointed. I do expect Devs doing great things with the PS3, but we have pretty much seen what that great system can do.

If all games look like Resident Evil 5, then I am good. If that is what he means by maxed out then I am fine with that. EA hasn't maxed out anything in recent years so I have no clue what he's talking about. Capcom, BioWare, Remedy, and 2K push systems to the limit, but not EA. EA enjoys sequels and resting on their laurels. Honestly, Fight Night 4 is worse than FN3 as far as controls are concerned. I actually canceled my pre-order after playing the demo. They are content to stick with the same formula over and over again, and as a result gaming will not progress. They rely on their Halo's and Gears of War games instead of trying something new. Microsoft isn't doing anything NEW? Did you see the E3? You mean SONY isn't doing anything new. A motion controller and some new games that are coming out in 2010 is a step in the right direction? How easily amused you are. Microsoft is turning their console into a multimedia device. If 360 had a browser, it would be the ultimate gaming machine. SONY didn't say crap about the future of PSN or anything ground breaking. MS is including 30 downloadable full games in August through XBL and implementing Facebook and Twitter. LOL wow. Never thought I'd see the day where something that EA said would be used as gospel. As a pc gamer I've NEVER seen anything put out by EA that's impressed me. We are talking about the platform where the sky is nearly the limit. Crysis for example can't run on consoles and was a beast to play at launch. but play a pc could nonetheless.

And no Crysis was not made by EA. Developed by Crytek published by EA. I loved Bf2 but that was made by the original DICE team who made 1942. The only difference was that they had to abide to EA's rules after being bought out by EA. BF2 was released plagued by bugs, glitches, faulty hitboxes, imbalance issues,crashes, and patches to fix patches. Certainly not made of the same quality that made bf1942 so successful.

Sure they make their money, but when you get down to the bottom of it. You can say they're the true kings of the Dairy Industry. They have never contributed to the advancement of the gaming industry. Instead they have seriously stalled the progression of what sports games should have been. Should be already actually.

It's quite amusing to see that fanboys only embrace EA with open arms only when they say something to support one console camps argument. But tomorrow when this article gets old. EA is back to being the douchebags of the gaming industry.

Gears 1 still looks best. Gears 2 is a leap from Gears 1 but not technically. Its more artistic style that got leaped up. Cleverly hiding the systems limitations.

If you look carefully, the game looks practically the same as gears 1. Except the art, environment etc are prettier because its no longer DULL GREY and BROWN.

you see forza 2 graphics as great to begin with but I disagree. What i can definitely agree on though is the improvement on part 3 from what ive seen. That 'better' was on some EA games, not all. Fight night night (old 1), burnout p are testament to that. The rest of them were pretty much equal. The key issue though is that the 360 is maxed out. I've said this months ago. I worked on 2 360 titles as a 3D modeler and trust me, that thing is Maxed Out to the core.

Well to be honest, not much has changed in the transition from Uncharted to Uncharted 2 the graphics are much in the same NOT that thats a bad thing its just that they are not beastly like many Sony fans are roaring about it. The PS3 is not Maxed out yet thanks to the Cell and thus is the only reason why that system can keep going.

You clearly haven't seen the last Uncharted 2 video! Looking out across an entire city in real gameplay made it look almost a generation beyond multiplats! Even when there is action indoors they don't skimp, If you blow down a wall that giant city is still out there and I'm sure you run through the whole thing and the fire you saw from the top is still there when you run by it!

That is what differentiates Uncharted from the others! When I ran through the jungle in U1, I came out to a clearing and looked at the cliff I was on prior to running through the jungle. UC1 vs. UC2. Well, just play the demo and pay some attention to the water pits all over the place. Full fluid dynamic with real time reflection. No, that was not in UC1. Or full hair animation. Just to name a few. (in addition to rock steady frame rate, etc).

These might be subtle improvements to the human eye - because we see those things everyday and ignore it as "normal" but for a video game this is "leaps and bounds ahead" from v1.0 to 2.0!

What they don't say is, that you can do vertex optimization on the CELL before you feed the data into the RSX. So, saying shaders are better on the 360 holds true if you consider the same amount of data you feed into either CPU. But often you can reduce invisible parts with culling to reduce the amount of polys the GPU needs to process (and those can possibly reduce shader requirements ??). I think that is the big chunk which is missing in CryEngine3. The PS3 specific pre-processing pipeline. If that would be in, this argument about the same would become meaningless (I mean, just look at GT5 and tell me why the amount of polys in that game is about 2-3x higher then in any top tear 360 game).

When one developer says “we’ve maxed out this console” i always read “my company cannot find efficient ways to improve our code. We are not able to make our game look/play better”. It’s my decision then if what they achieved is noteworthy, correct or disappointing.
Multiplats are not the good place to make comparisons between platforms, as it’s in the company interest to make the game look equal or very similar.
For exclusives, i think 360 is able to deliver but then ps3 is uber-delivering.
Now the question is that this commentary comes not from a developer but from one of the biggest publishers in the world, with dozens of renowned franchises and first class studios in it’s belt, that has developed many great titles in both platforms, my first thought is different. In fact it’s not anymore devs inability or budget restricting what limits game technical prowess, but it’s the hardware itself. No excuses.
Of course we will continue to see better looking games on 360 as time passes, but late trend of “not that many things improving” will continue.
Right now i think no company can afford a new console cycle to begin in the next few years, and graphical differentiation, like it or not, is one of marketing pilars. On another topic I believe that the M$ have shot themselves in the foot with Nathal. Although the tech is lightyears ahead of other motion sensing.
Practically it's not suited to games as they are now. If M$ talk up this tech too much then 360 owners will see the PS3 as a hardcore choice.
I can actually see games that would be improved with the PS3 motion tech like flower for instance or silent hill but Nathal is so complex that no game will run it and give the same quality of experience as current AAA games. As an example no gears of war games will be made with it save for maybe on rails shooters. Even games that run Nathal will pay a price because of the hardware limitations. It could be like the Vista of consoles where everything that runs off it pays a price in increased memory usage etc.

And that is so 1997 (FFVII three discs) to be using more than one disc. Too much of a bother if you ask me. I can not recall a fanbase so in need of reassurance about their console. At this point into this generation its boring. the 360 came out in 2005 its now 2009, the PS3 came out in 2006 if its still taking this long into the PS3's life for major companies like EA to figure it out, thats embarrassing.

The fact that a console built like a PC is maxed out 4 years into its life is not surprising. The fact that it still pumps out great graphics after 4 years with no hardware updates, is impressive. MS will release another console the moment the PS3 begins to dominate in consumers minds. in this economy if you can play 90% of the same games that the PS3 does on the 360 then the 360 looks like a good deal, despite the inevitable complaints about all the other ways MS gets you with addons and live fees.

MS will release a new console with specs that give it an edge over the PS3, then early adopters will jump on it, as well as the community that MS developed on the 360. Then Sony will come out with something, and this cycle will go on and on.

Take the horseblinders off and stop seeing everything as a threat or something to argue about.

The statement is important, should EA, based on their experience, now try to split their content between 360 and PS3 (like everybody does for Wii and PS360). Until now, they could reach the same result by simply porting things over.

There will be a point, where the tech will be a known factor in the inhouse dev studios. So much, that they might think about using a version which uses the full capacity of BD, for example. And so on. As soon as this point is reached, your "90%" of all games will start to drop. Still fine, Dead Space Wii is a nice game, but different to the PS360 version. Still enjoyable, I would say. As long as AW and SC makes you happy, nothing to worry about.

Im kind of surprised at some of the comments on here. they are not outright goofy like most of the fanboy stuff. Most of you make good points. Here is my take, coming from a Playstation fanboy, not as hard core as some people on the subject. Im leaving multiplats out cuz they never show off what the system is capable of when compared to exclusives anyway. Ps3 is the stronger system, but after seeing some recent stuff for the 360, it is no slowpoke. Great system, especially if you like XBL and the price is just right. I dont like the exclusives that much, not because of graphics, but ps3 has the games on there that i have been playing since i was young. I also can play all my Ps2 and ps1 games as well. But we have some rather crappy multiplat support. As much as I like Capcom, we still have the stupid 5 gb installs. I dont like the reliability with the 360 either, i had two ps2 crap out on me, so Im not going down that road again. I also hate the 360 controller too. the analog sticks are good, but the placement is weird for me. i like the symmetrical design of the ds3 sticks. But i am surprised at how well dvd is keeping up, not surpassing like 360 fans believe, with bluray. You wont see it now but with in two years the dvd will be topped out and bluray just hitting its peak. No one uses the space like they should now anyway. I also dislike the XBL fee, when i can do the same thing on psn. I dont care about cross chat. I still dont understand that one. See I gave reasons why i dont like 360, and didnt just go "teh ps3 is better cuz i say so", I gave reasons for why i like a certain thing. The ps3 and the 360 is not maxed out yet. Most EA games execute poorly on the PS3 compared to the xbox 360.. EA games are the biggest complains for PS3 owners.

Kind of ironic that probably the worst developers is the Key developer for Sony fans to brag about their console.

Sony leg humpers you can't have it both ways... if EA credibility is good enough for this than it must be good enough for all the crappy games they've made for the PS3.

When EA reaches the level of quality of games made by other developers.. and at least are able to match their own multiplatform games... then they can talk.

I’ll admit it. At the moment, I lean heavily in favor of my PS3. There simply hasn’t been anything on my 360 to pull me away from my Trey. I haven’t really given the 360 any play since Mass Effect 1. I probably won’t be into my 360 again until Mass Effect 2 drops – and I am REALLY looking forward to that game with a passion.

That being said, I cannot wholly agree with the article.

Though I prefer the PS3, I know that more power and performance can be squeezed out of the 360. Look at Alan Wake, Forza ,etc. I think that the problem lies in how the companies are approaching programming for the systems.

Hear me out; Here’s my logic:
The 360 is lauded as being way easier to program for in comparison to the PS3. My thinking is that this has cultivated a culture of laziness amongst the 360’s developers. The relative ease with which they are able to program for the 360 has stifled innovation and creativity. The PS3 is a far trickier entity, forcing the programmers to be much more wily and creative with their process. They have to think outside the box , which is part of the reason why the PS3 is getting such stellar exclusives.

I think that if MS puts a fire under the behinds of the developers, we could see some truly amazing things being done on the 360. They need to implement more techniques and tricks to make the games stand out. Basically they need a massive dose of finesse to advance the field.

SONY has designed a flexible hardware solution. Move physics, AI, effects off the cell processor onto the special SPUs. This allows developers further optimization and only a few developers have managed to show their first gen efforts with Uncharted, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Infamous, etc. Next gen efforts like Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5 and Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time will push the envelope even further. This is where you will see the breakthrough difference and you will see a divide between PS3 and XBOX 360.

The XBOX 360 is simply from a programming standpoint a PC. The hardware is already dated. You right code that runs directly on the cores and the cores crunch it. When EA says they have maxed it out, there is a shred of truth. As all you PC owners know that you need to update your hardware quite often if you are a serious gamer to get e.g. from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo to see boost in performance - more threads, etc.

So the achiles heal for XBOX360 was there no future proofing in design, it was rushed out the door to be 1yr ahead and design was not complete which is clearly evident with its 40%+ failure rate with RROD.

While Natal looks promosing, that "vision" video is all you will see as a concept. The actual delivery will likely resemble the SONY eyetoy with voice capability. I don't think XBOX 360 has the horsepower to pull off that grand a vision with current hardware and doubt even if the software capability is there. One other thing you have to recognize about the "Milo" project is, the software is not smart enough to fully comprehend the entire english language. It will only understand certain "phrases" and will not have "heuristic learning abilities" So, the experience and interaction will not be open ended but canned or on rails.

As for storage, no developer produces multi-disk games, it is cost prohibitive and not scalable to do this worldwide. They will simply squeeze and use compression to get it onto one disk. The DVD9 technology employed by XBOX 360 is too small for real grand open world projects with 1080P resolution. Only Bluray can do this and developers such as Guerilla have demonstrated how you can stream data on the fly without very long loading screens. So PS3 wins with Bluray storage option, offers developers far more freedom and does not limit like XBOX DVD9 does.

Bla Bla maxed out. I Think nearly every good Game maxed out the hardware, other way it woud look better. The only way to get better Graphics are better program styles wich take less hardware power, so more Graphics can be shown.

Gears of War 2 maxed out the Xbox and there is still more you can do on the software side.

Killzone 2 Maxed out the PS3 and there is still more you can do on the software side.

Specialy the Japanese Producers know how to do this. Square Enix and Sony are well know for there Graphic Bombs, even if the System is old as the PS2. God of War, Shadow of the Collossus and Final Fantasy are good exaples of it. Or for the PC Guild Wars - It have great Graphics and can be played on old Systems as well.

If the Xbox had Support of these Developers, it woud show better Graphics too. Its all a question of development. Because that is never on plann (exept Square Enix FFXIII) Xbox will never be really maxed out,because of bad programmers^^

EA may have had bad press but they've improved their games have become more and more original and less of a rip off, Fifa 09 or atleast the demo was very good.

Look ok the 360 isn't maxed out but no one will disagree when I say it's closer to being maxed out than the PS3. DVD's are filling up while blu-ray for now seems to be a good gaming format with downloads still slow.

Well it's not all true, Microsoft's biggest problem is that they had to use a whole 2 threads on the 3 core Cpu to stop hackers from cracking there hypervizor tech, they rather this, then to have home brew booting up, remember that linux hack, then they started that efuse stuff which has more problems then its worth "e", A lot of inside people know this, so they lost 35% in Cpu performance which is a bottle neck for the Gpu and the 10mb aa ram, I would think that when the ps3 starts looking really good that Microsoft will just unlock the security "core" and use the Hard drive for more texture fetching, cos this is the two area ps3 has over all the consoles out there, and do not say how killzone 2 does not use the hdd cos it does you just do not install it on the hdd, And the one place sony has every one is in disk size, but there is hope for the 360 as Microsoft and Toshiba have been working very hard to expand the dvd 2.0 profile and it looks like they have had a breakthrough and its not as big as a blue ray but with compression they can get close to 30gig on a disk and yes it will read on any dvd drive, So in the next 12 months lets see who's console has the best graphics, cos xenon has a lot off power, it's just been held back and EA and even Sony know about this!

statements like these should always be taken with a grain of a salt, but to discredit their technical abilities in studio just ain't right. despite being a company known for milking franchises, doing monopoly style takeovers, using quantity instead of quality assurance mantra, and releasing an enormous amount of average looking games, EA are quite competent in the video game development industry. the bigger your corporation is, the more top dollar game programmers and designers you come across with more access to resources and funding to create games.

EA's downfall is just trying to make a quick buck by owning every franchise and sports licenses to remove competition (curse you EA for taking the NFL license. 2k sports were killing you guys with ESPN 2K5)and because of rushed titles, you see less quality games.

Finally, the Crysis developer's head honcho said that they are maxing out the PS3, at the same time they have also expressed that both versions will look nearly identical, with the 360 version looking better in some ways and vice versa. What does that tell you? If the PS3 version is maxing out the PS3 and the 360 version looks the same, well, that would mean the PS3 is not more powerful than the 360. Or alternately it could mean that all this talk of maxing out a console is all relative and really comes down to how well the game is coded.

It's a moot point though, when you consider that the vast majority of multiplatform games continue to look and/or perform better on the 360, at the same time that games like Splinter Cell Conviction and Alan Wake look as good as anything on the PS3.

You speak the truth. I think the biggest reasons the PS3 shines over the 360 are actually Blu-Ray and a guaranteed hard drive.

The graphics cards are very comparable, with the 360's having the slight edge. On the other hand, the cell can pre-cull for the RSX letting it use its power for other things, also dont forget about deferred rendering. So the cell does help RSX immensly.

Anyway though, its not a difference like comparing ps2 to ps1 games or anything so we should get past some of this. Its just that the first 2 years the 360 camp sure did rub it in ours (PS3 fans)..Peace.
