Gamer Limit Review: Demon's Souls

Gamer Limit writes "Demon's Souls is perhaps the most satisfying game of its generation, but its uncompromising nature will only appeal to players of a particularly masochistic bent."

There's nothing like a ridiculously difficult game to wake you up in the morning :D

Chris3995443d ago (Edited 5443d ago )

You will die, a lot. But that's half the fun (and the joy when you manage to survive).

I hope that this game garners relative commercial success in the West. It's a totally under the radar gem that really deserves it, much more than the tripe we're fed on a monthly basis by larger publishers.

I'm on my 3rd play through. And just to give you some idea, I NEVER play a game again once I've finished it. I think Heavenly Sword was the only other game this gen that I've played multiple times (only because it was so cinematic and gorgeous). There's just this addictive quality to Demon's Souls that makes it utterly compelling to play.

To think that this is from the same company that gave us Enchanted Arms (and the original King's Field series, so I guess they have a decent pedigree).

Jamegohanssj55443d ago

When do we get this in America? I've heard so much aboot it that I really want to play it now.

Fall '09 is what to expect no other date has been given that I know of though.

So hopefully E3 will give us a date.

GVON5443d ago

Mine shipped from yes asia's german warehouse this morning, hopefully it will arrive in the UK by tonight, and I should get to me by wednesday.

zoneofenders5443d ago

one of the best game i have played this gen
well the uselss SCEJ(this gen,so far) redeem themself with this game.

Chris3995443d ago

Not trying to start anything, but Folklore and even Genji (for it's time) were brilliant and decent games respectively. Folklore in particular was massively under appreciated. Pretty sure that SCEJ were responsible for the original Legend of Dragoon too. There have been some fun little casual titles - Piyotama, Last Man (or whatever it's called, can't recall) - that they've had a hand in as well.

Oh, and they're intimately involved with Media Vision in their crafting of all things Wild Arms, which basically make them akin to Gods in my book :)

TheTwelve5443d ago

I can't express enough how rewarding this game is. This is the only game this gen that will truly measure your gaming skills. Hardcore officially belongs to the PS3 because of this one game.

And it lasts forever.

Oh, and it has an amazingly unique online mode (hehehehe).

GET IT.

pippoppow5443d ago

Yes this game is great. 30hrs in and maybe halfway through. The variety in locations and enemies is nice. Never knowing what lurks around a bend or what is waiting for you in the distant dark. There are nice surprises and big Boss'. Any D&D/fantasy lovers out there should get this game. This game is hard. You will level up but if you are not carefully a low level baddy will still be able to beat u especially if ganged up. Online component is fun also. Go killed the other day by a high level player who broke into my game as a Black Phantom. Also had some help fighting a boss enemy with a player who joined my game by summoning who showed up as a Blue Phantom. This is how an online component for a single player game works well.

TheHater5443d ago

you had to bring up the horror that was Enchanted Arms did you?

INehalemEXI5443d ago (Edited 5443d ago )

One of my most treasured gems DS is. It brings satisfaction and you will want to keep it , this is like anti rental. If you rent you should be hog tied and feathered. pwn this.

SaiyanFury5443d ago

Fantastic and well written review. I said pretty much the same things when I reviewed the game a few months back. Truly one of the most satisfying games this gen for me as a die hard King's Field fan.

ThanatosDMC5443d ago

I got a questing for those that have the game. Do y'all play it solo or with people's help?

INehalemEXI5432d ago

I play alone most of the time but its alot of fun and easier when playing with others. There is also person vs person which is awesome.

Why o why5443d ago

wallet......cant......take..it *keels over*.
i did hear this game was hard, suppose it makes a change. Feels better when you finally flip it. I still hold anguish towards ninja gaiden Sigma for handing my sh!t to me to the point where i put it down for a couple months

arvfab5443d ago

Oh it's hard, very hard some times. BUT if you know some little tricks, you can beat the hardest bosses without even swinging your sword once :D Unfortunatly, you can only do it after your first playtrough, so the first time will still be very hard..just ask the Maneater boss :D

Da One5443d ago

i hated that boss with a passion

AcesAndEights5443d ago

That game looks pretty damn awesome, but, if it's hard I will probably suck at it, gotta be worth a try though.

SpoonyRedMage5443d ago

Another great score. Looks like an awesome game then. It's especially surprising considering the developer's track record.

Fullish5443d ago

Agreed, looks way better then enchanted arms.

beavis4play5443d ago

i've never played any of their other games but, i've played the kings field games and loved them. they do this style of game right.

Cyrax_875443d ago

Looks like we have another Valkyria Chronicles here :D

Can't wait till it comes to Australia.

The best PS5 exclusives 2024

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. So, here's KnowTechie's take on the best PS5 exclusives in 2024 and beyond

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC5d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier5d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k45d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy855d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga4d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS74d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

RonnySins5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Killing it my a$$! The 1st party is still MIA and no... Remakes and remasters don't count.

andy855d ago

I mean they literally do count. Imagine saying FF7 Rebirth doesn't count 😂

Tody_ZA5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@Andy85 Don't forget the remakes for Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, two of the best PlayStation games around!

And beyond PlayStation, what about Resident Evil 2 and 4? RonnySins wins the award for dumbest opinion!

raWfodog5d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto5d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies5d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS74d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast5d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

DaniMacYo4d ago

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

Why Soulsborne Games Are So Popular Despite Being So Difficult

Soulsborne games are infamously difficult. But why has that difficulty been the secret sauce to success for many of these titles in the genre?

GamesAsAService73d ago

Rewarded effort feels good.

Starting out bad at something and getting better with practice makes accomplishments meaningful.

Getting through these games feels like a journey of self improvement, lol.

You only have yourself to blame if things go poorly, but in a similar way overcoming challenge is similarly a function of your own growth.

franwex72d ago

I think because the games are fair. Gamers can tell that it’s due to their own abilities and not some BS.

jjb198172d ago

I've always loved the sense of adventure and wonder in these games. There's no hand holding, there are surprises and traps everywhere and you have to figure out what some items do. Beating a heide knight was like an accomplishment for me the first time and it felt good to earn that sword he dropped. I've spent hundreds of hours in souls games ever since Kings Field on PS1. The lore is incredible and it makes you think about the history of the world you're in. I can't wait for Shadow of the Erdtree.

SyntheticForm72d ago

It's the recipe of fair difficulty, presentation, boss battles and lore that attract me to these games. The From Souls games have always had a nebulous quality to them that I find fascinating. Demystifying them is a big part of the fun.

OhReginald72d ago

I think its the atmosphere and gameplay. Each of these games unique ways to play and unique settings/atmospheres that are in a league of its own.
