Guerrilla: Don't call Killzone 2 a 'Halo Killer'

No, it's not a Halo Killer. But why do we need "killers"?

If we had avoided calling this and that a Halo Killer, maybe those games would have been evaluated on their own merits, instead of put in a cage with the other panda and told to perform. Un-deserving games get over-hyped and deserving games get under-appreciated.

Both exist just fine without one killing the other. I'm Forging a map in Halo 3 when I'm not playing Killzone 2. I give them BOTH their playtime because they are both great games.

Killzone 2 is an amazing multiplayer experience once you get used to the conventions of the experience, namely the controls. In my opinion, it's a unique experience that doesn't have to look to another franchise for a frame of reference.

It's entirely a fun experience, but giving games unrealistic expectations always ends in tragedy. So, if Killzone 2 should have been a Halo killer, no one should have called it a Halo killer until it... actually killed Halo.

Now, apply that principle to all of Sony's PR: Stop prophesying, dammit. You're mouth is writing checks that bounce, regardless of how right you might be. By telling the future, you change the future.

True, but by putting developers under pressure, it'll encourage the developers to try hard out of pride and bring out a great game. Who doesn't love a little competition here and there, especially in the end: it's the gamers who win.

Sure under-appreciated games get crushed under the "killer hype", but it's playing with fire that I approve of. In the name of competition and innovation.

I would normally agree, but you always have to question a principled response and evaluate it against results. In this case, your principled devotion to competition is very well-intentioned, but it assumes inaccurate hyping doesn't affect the results.

Competition is great, but we as consumers are messing with that formula by taking the competition out of the hands of the developers. We have very little control over the small details that can make or break a final product. But we can affect the expectations of the game. If fanboys get their way, all games get rated 0% or 100%... according to their loyalty... before a game even comes out. Their loyalty is a faith that dictates their own principled reactions. Therefore, you either expect more of a game than it can deliver or you don't expect anything and nothing excites you.

If games suddenly "appeared" out of no where, we would see a much more accurate evaluation for games. But thanks to being a platform-mediated market, you can't sell games without systems... therein the catch 22. And since platform-mediated markets are subject to an taller and deeper hype curve, the effects are magnified. So, hype is necessary, but should be restrained to keep from cannibalizing the industry.

The fanboy movement is the sign of that hype going out of control, eating away at the industry. It's why Nintendo is running away with the generation. It's why the hardcore fanboys need to recognize they are both on the same side and stop this downward spiral.

Halo franchise is a beast. Master Chief is an Icon. Nothing is going to kill Halo until they stop making Halo themed shooters...but hey Halo doesnt NEED to be killed, I have an idea how about other devs just make games that will match Halo's success and then we can look back in time and say damm that [ ] game was definitely one of the best shooters of all time, right along WITH Halo. KZ2 was good but personally it lacked its very own special identity that a shooter needs to make a big impact in a crowded and highy competitive market of shooters. Well it's obvious it's not a Halo killer. But What Fstar says makes a lot of sense. If you have certain expectations from a company. Or they have a reputation to withhold. More pressure to release a better game is put on the developer.

But when a developer loses sight of what made them one of the best and their execs no longer care about their fanbase or reputation, only dollar signs. Games like "The Last Remnant" are released.

I know my explanation is a double-edged sword, but one has to pick a side and stick with it. I myself can't find the way to balance fanboyism with practicality. I'm all for people expressing their passion and love as pride is very cool in making games. However when that pride turns to hubris, what then? Will games still stand for the art created by their artisans(developers) or go the way of an industrialized complex(EA) fueled by supply-n-demand?(oversaturatio n of FPSs on the game market)

My standing point is that I don't have a real rebuttal to your response because I'm not so sure anymore if this-gen sucks due to console fanboyism over game fanboyism or that I'm just too conservative about the old ways. I'm not even sure what is the formula for making a great game anymore than anyone else here. Passion and a creative vision doesn't make a great game anymore in this day. Just look at the over-use of the Unreal Engine 3 as that represents the goal displacement of developers wanting to make a quick buck over creating a work of art in video games that gamers will respect and remember for ages(Tetris).

And what confuses me the most is how overwhelming the market responds to the next Halo, and that a fine game that's breeds innovation like The Darkness and Folklore falls under the radar. It makes me wonder if I'm out of touch with gaming, or that gaming is out of touch with me. My whole warrant for "pressure" falls in line more with the old ways, compared to the partisan console gen that we live in. That hype is based on the games itself, and not the console exclusive that fanboys blindly hype for their own side for the win.

But one thing is for sure, Nintendo is the real enemy of gamers: "present" and "past". Off-topic I know.

I've stuck with the opinion that this gen sucks hard. Fanboys that continue to shell out their cash for a couple maps of DLC, extra costumes, and stuff that's normally in a patch. Have really stalled gaming this gen.

every game is old after the first... Halo Combat Evolved was the best FPS shooter I've ever played, but afterwards, just like most sequels, repeats itself.. Halo 2 and 3 were Halo 1, same Master Chief, similar but updated weapons of course, a few new ones, etc, etc... On the flip side, I find it hard avoid stereotyping/generalizing on Gamefaqs/Gamespot/1up. But at the same time, I've learned not to let it bother me. Maybe it's me getting older (trust me, I'm not attacking you or saying you're immature. I just don't want my words miscontrued) but I'm starting to not care anymore. Trust me, there are some who claim to be objective but it annoys me because you can tell in their writing, they really aren't. On-Topic: I like both games, but I give the edge to Halo 3 just cause of more variety like vehicles and split-screen. I can't play KZ2 in the same room with friends after all. The way I see it, at a party, it'll always be Halo 3 that gets played more often than KZ2 because no one wants to shell out $400 +$60 for a game that might not even be that great because there's no split-screen in KZ2.

They completely underestimated the importance of split-screen in a game such as KZ2 - however I don't think including it would have impacted sales that much; Motorstorm 2 and Resistance 2's split-screen modes, whilst awesome, didn't propel sales as high as the first games which didn't include those modes.

It's fine that you give the edge to HAlO because everything is subjective and if you think HALO3 is better than that's fine. As long as you're enjoying the game and having fun with your frieds, which it should always be.

Seriously, it doesn't have to have split-screen to be great. It's great on it's own right. I personally think Bioshock is over freaking rated but it didn't stop anyone from giving it GOTY awards left to right despite have lack of split screen or even multiplayer. It's fun on its own right and that's what matters. Why don't we just leave it at that.

I've been on this site for over a year and it is obvious there's at least as many 360 fans as Ps3.

Problem is the the xfanboys love doing fantom disagrees and stealing bubbles, maliciously- especially those who don't have a ps3 but always seem to be commenting in the Ps3 section.

Also, you will get more reward playing Warhawk online than R2 or KZ2. Warhawk online MP is as good if not better than Halo - simple fun and very addictive in a 16 vs 16 with good players. It has no SP or coop but does have 4 player split screen. It's cheapas at the PSStore.

KZ2 is a good game but not great like Halo nor will ever have the fanbase. It's not quite better than CoD4 but could by making the controls like all other shooters, getting rid of the spawn flare and have spawn zones, redoing and making the rankings harder, add more weapons and have vehicles(jeep, tank, intruder, mech). Those things aren't necessary to make a game great. To say a game is better is purely subjective. Some people actually loved KZ2, Bioshock over Halo 3. In the end, it was fun and that's what matters.

However, I don't see how Multiplayer couldn't have been incorporated. You can devise scenerios that would foster a multiplayer experience. I don't agree. I think the controls in most other games are what suck. After playing Killzone 2 I really cringe every time I play another shooter. I hate floaty, jerky controls in shooters. I still like those other games, I just wish they had controls more like Killzone 2.

I also think you way over estimate how fast you can turn your body while aiming with a gun. Some of these games have you turning faster than a person could turn in real life without a rifle in their hands. I shoot guns and I tell you that Killzone 2 feels more real to life than most other floaty shooters.

They blindly and desperately worshiped a game that was in development for 4 years, had a budget as big as a Micheal Bay movie, received help from the best developers in the industry and in the end failed to top even the most mediocre halo fps game quality wise. The phrase "Halo killer" is what needs to die. While I love Halo 1 and 2, and still rate the MP for H3 very highly there are many FPS games that I'd rather play these days.

Halo has a special place in console gaming and as such should not be viewed in the same light as most, if not all, other console shooters. It arrived at a serendipitous moment for Bungie and MS trith be told and the fanbase it built up on the original Xbox as the first FPS to offer the full FPS on and offline package has to be admired. For the present, in soles terms at least, it leaves the franchise in a pretty unassailanle position. Whether, after playing Halo3 to death, that's a really good thing for the quality of the series I wouldn't like to say.

Certainly, looking at a broader palette of the shooters we now have I doubt the fanbase for Halo would be the size it is now had they arrived earlier. In much the same way I don't feel Halo could replicate similar success on PC-I doubt it could've at the time it all started. The result is a game that, even now, closely resembles what was fresh to console gamers when the first one launched way back when. I really do think that other shooters are the ones moving the bar in terms of originality, quality, visuals and making the best use of current console tech.

What I'm saying, I guess, is that a game/series with the rabis following of a Halo is always in more danger of stagnating(not daring to fix what isn't broken if you like-while others take that risk)than it ever is of one game coming along and blowing it out of the water in terms of sales-that doesn't really happen and we all know it.

ODST gives Bungie a great chance to do something new with the template as we won't be MC this time around so I'm hoping to see them go out with a bang and make the much loved(but, imo, ageing) gameplay relevant again(outside of MP which, thanks mainly to Forge and excellent DLC has been able to stay fresher than the SP)and perhaps add more to the franchise than we've seen in years. If they don't then the next Halo FPS will struggle to reach the heights of 1, 2 and 3 sales wise-it'll have a new developer so won't have the Bungie pedigree with the series for long time fans(who make up most of them I feel)which also makes the job harder. So another danger is from within rather than another game.

So, in my long winded way, I guess I mean I'd like to see the "Halo killer" phrase put down and forgotten as, if Halo is to die, it'll be down to whoever makes the first one to fail at the checkout and their failure to keep the quality/keep up to date. Not because GG redeemed themselves for being over ambitious with their first attempt on PS2 with KZ2 being a great game and not because MW2 might be even better than COD4 was.

First person cover system? dont know if it´s been done before, but i think they pretty much invented that. Really impressive graphics, i dont know if there is much on any console that can beat them there. The helghast, they have become really big icons in the gaming industry. Dynamic multiplayer, i guess Resistance 2 were first with that one but it´s an awesome feature. If you dont know what it is, it is when the goals in the mp changes. From tdm to capture the flag to protect the taret and so on. An realistic feel to the wepons, it is really hard to fire an atomatic wepon. I dont know if you have tried it, but i have and if you spray the bullets youre gonna miss 95%. Other than that it was a pretty normal shooter. Oh i almost forgot, they have some really awesome AI.

To games like Halo 3. It's just a great social game when you have friends over. The fact that all 4 of you can play one shooter and be on a team is a lot of fun. You'd think Halo would have set the standard in terms of multiplayer options. Co-op just breaths more life into a game and it beats not having to pass the controller every other round when you have friends/roomates/family that want to play along with.

If GG would have went the tiny extra mile and allowed splitscreen for online multiplayer, it wouldn't have hurt them in the slightest as my house would be much more interested in playing that game.

Here’s my issue with the whole “killer” moniker. They are on two different systems!! Different capabilities etc. I understand you can consider the fact they are both fps, and competition makes devs work harder blah blah blah the fact is they will never be direct comp. Until one of these 2 goes multi plat period, and there won’t be a Halo Killer until M$ decides they are done with the Halo series. They won’t adopt another FPS exclusive that will compete with Halo because they don’t have to, master chief is bringing them plenty of money as is.

Killzone 2 became a very hyped PS3 shooter after the fake CGI footage shown at E3 05.

The fact that Killzone 2 isn't on the Xbox 360, and Halo 3 isn't on the PS3 - made Killzone 2 a prime target for the Halo-killer moniker.

Killzone 2 is in direct competition because it was one of the biggest - if not THE BIGGEST exclusive PS3 shooters... even bigger than Resistance or Resistance 2. There was HOPE that Killzone 2 would do for the PS3... what Halo 3 did for the the Xbox 360.

There are other similarities as well...

Both Bungie, and Guerrilla were bought by console developers.

Both Halo 3 and Killzone 2 were heavily invested in, and expected to have huge sales and move hardware as well.

As it now stands... the PS3 has two stars - the Resistance and Killzone franchises to fill the exclusive shooter categories... while Microsoft has the Halo and Gears of War franchises, for now.

Question --> what would many of the posters in this thread have said IF <-- Killzone 2 had outsold, and outscored Halo 3?

There's room for more than one game in my life and I'm sure most gamers are the same. Considering Halo and Killzone aren't even on the same platform why should one particularly even effect the other? Halo, because of a slew of reasons, not least the quality of it's MP package and DLC, enjoys a vast following opver three successful games. Killzone2 had to make up for a wobbly and over ambitious first outing gaining it a tiny fanbase in comparison. When iot's also on a different console how did anyone ever think it would actually "kioll" Halo? Do Halo players play Gears? Yup, and that's not called a Halo killer when it's actually on the same system, stealing 360 gamers time away from Bungies behemoth.

Honestly, the only thing that can kill a franchise as big as Halo is a few duff games running. Nothing from the outside can kill it, they can put pressure on Halo to up it's game , but that's all.

Obviously Sony thought that it needed a HUGE AAA(A) shooter.. and obviously the amount of time and money invested into the game, including the buying of the developers was to attempt to get an exclusive shooter to rival what the Halo franchise has done for Microsoft's platforms.

Sony fanboys seem to think that Xbox 360 owners only defend Xbox 360 because they don't own a PS3. That's bull, man. I don't own a PS3 and I think both consoles are great; obviously the PS3 is leaping forward and the 360 is concentrated on community, but they're both great consoles. Bioshock could have had a miltiplayer experience, but 2K Games decided to concentrate on creating a full fledged single player with a great story. By the way, I get the sense that you don't exactly understand what Bioshock is based on. The story is based on Randian objectivism, and that's why I think it is one of the best games ever made, because it takes a legitimate philosophical work and turns it on its head. It's not a standard FPS. It doesn't need a Multiplayer Component to be worth its price tag. Trust me, HALO 3 and Killzone 2 with only single player would not be worth 60 dollars.

I played Halo1 the other day and was wowed again about how RIGHT bungie got everything: slick presentation, the characters and fun team mates, epic settings and moments, mood enhancing music, weapons, vehicles, variety of enemies, good voice acting, solid gameplay. Why oh why don't more developers copy all of these, sheez?

KZ2 is definitely a different game and for a more mature audience. If anything, KZ2 should be compared with CoD4 and GG should have copied what made that game a success.

Resistance is a more Halo-like, and all Insomniac needs to do is copy Halo's successful formula to make Resistance Halo's equivalent. Resistance is partly there but needs more tweaking. It really needs a charismatic main character, to go modern warefare and to have vehicles.

BTW, Halo MP online gameplay is equalled if not bettered by Warhawk. Pity Warhawk has no coop or SP for a proper comparison.

All that matters in the MP is the fun factor, and in that case, warhawk probably matches Halo 3's MP. Killzone 2 has different controls that might turn some people off, but if you just play the game for an hour you will get used to that kind of stuff. Plus, Killzone 2's single player is good in terms of story. It's a little thin, but it doesn't play the same plot twist game that halo does. It tells a straightforward story about a war, kinda like Saving Private Ryan

Really. How do you figure that. Killzone is a great game the first time around. I went to play it a second time (campaign) and it got so bored i just ejected the disc without saving halfway through the first level. Killzone 2 offers nothing, and i repeat NOTHING, new to the FPS genre. All the KZ2 fans keep saying is how awesome the graphics are... Yes they are good, but if that is all you have then it isnt worth playing. Lemme break down Killzone 2 for you:

1. Run to the next checkpoint, kill the mass of enemies, run to thhe next checkpoint, kill the mass of enemies, repeat until the boos battle. (Fact)

2. Boss Battle: kill the mass of enemies before you get to fight the boss, then fight the boss. To fight the boss, you have to keep running around the room until he appears and comes at you, shoot him a few times and he disappears again, repeat. (Fact)

Honestly... You say KZ2 'already killed it...' lol. It took me roughly 7 hours (about 20 min shy) to complete the campaign... Halo is a longer game (Fact) on any difficulty. Killzone MP is a joke. If you are helghast, all you gotta do is get a sniper and cloak yourself, spawn kill everyone and you win. Halo... Not so lucky. There are SEVERAL spawn points throughout the maps so you almost never spawn near an enemy.

Is Great but not that great.....I am not gonna try and downplay halo but the fact of the matter is the only reason it sold so well and did so well is because it had a francise behind it, it was advertised out the ass, and it had no competition. Plus the fact it came with many different bundles adds on to this. Look I played Halo but seriously if you wanna go into the best FPS of all time. Look at classics like Counter strike or Battlefield 2 or even unreal. Killzone 2 for me is a breathe of new fresh air and takes one of the biggest steps into FPS Realism. Halo is a run and gunner where as Killzone 2 is more of a Tactical shooter in that you have to use cover...Especially in harder modes....In Halo without skulls you can just jump around and shoot. Hide behind a rock for a few seconds and rinse and repeat. Thats where halo got old for me. In that its just too easy because its made for a more casual market where as killzone 2 is for a more hardcore market. Plus if you wanna nitpick...killzone had competition with several different games. Along with a fanbase that isn't majority FPS like 360's and it wasn't advertised as it only had 1 commercial and internet hype. So really you can factor all that in if you wanna give a fair comparison. Plus along with that killzone hasn't even been out for more than 5 months where as halo 3 has been out for a few years.

Secondly I just want to point this out as i did it in another thread. We have no idea how much killzone 2 cost to make. Seriously if anyoner here works at GG or SCEA then please tell me because this is all specualtion of how much it had cost them. plus we don't know how much halo cost to make. To you it may not have been but to me it was. Of course both of our post are opinionated. Heres the facts. First and foremost killzone brings the best console graphics at this time which really shows just how epic or war torn a battleground can be. Secondly its very real in the fact that you can't run and gun no as the game is a tactical shooter in most ways and you can't just spray and pray as you have to use the cover system in the majority of engagements. Thirdly the surround sound from the blu ray is second to none. I can hear every gun shot every footstep and everything my soldier would hear and this all plays out nicely on my surround sound system in my living room. Next the game multiplayer is very innovative in its clan support where it clearly dominates halo in...(again fact) So yeah to you it may not have been a breathe of fresh air but to me it was better than Cod4 or halo in many ways that I liked.

Sorry guys, that isn't how I define what's good. Killzone 2 is the most polished and hardcore shooter I have played. I love it and it will be my favorite shooter until CODMW2 comes out (at least I hope).

Lot's of people play Halo for the same reason lots of people buy Wiis: because it's popular. On top of that it is a pretty fun game.
