A few PS3 owners have suffered a issue known as the Yellow Light of Death (YLoD). Gilksy1 has found a fix for this, and the fix is very similar to that of the Xbox 360 RRoD (requires use of heatgun). This method has promised to fix your YLoD PS3 and make it run cooler than before.

Actual its most common on older 60 GB SKUs. The newer 80 GB SKU and above with smaller 65nm chip seems to have resovled this 'issue' for the most part.

OK yeh this guide doesn't always work. I there are two types of YLOD; Motherboard, and PSU. I tried this guide, it didn't work so I assume mine was a PSU problem (So I had to pay for a replacement PS3).

Dunno if anyone who has used this guide with success can answer this, but were you able to eject your disc from your PS3 during the YLOD? I couldn't, maybe that would show the difference in YLOD?

i have a BC USA Launch 60 gig, and i must agree ive had my share of plenty of problems with my console including:

No trophy sync*
When i quit a game i always get signed out
Takes a million tries to DL a game patch
My original Life w/ Playstation never loaded*
Stopped reading discs*

Now the funny thing about these problems is that each one that has a star next to it (*), has AUTOMATICALLY fixed itself. I never had to trouble shoot or anything it just simply fixed. it. self. The PS3 is truly a remarkable machine......as for the remaining unstarred problems....idk what to do about those

Sounds like an internet issue.

I switched from my current ISP to a cheaper one only to get signed out of the PSN far too frequently (every 5 minutes or so).

I switched back and those problems disappeared.

My 60GB PS3 stopped reading discs too, but not Blu-Ray or DVD's but regular CD's. But after a month or so, it just automatically fixed itself. I think it was due to a firmware update.

u c the thing is, is its not just randomly signing me out.....it only signs me out specifically when i quit a game. Its not a big deal at all but it ALWAYS happens and itll be nice to kno how to fix that along wit the more annoying "tryin to DL a patch a million times" issue

Even if the failure rate is 1% or less, we're still talking the potential of 100,000 to 200,000 units out there that break down. And when do you hear about it...when people are pissed off, of course. I was the same way. You didn't ever hear me talking about my 360 before. I was just content to play it. After 4 consoles though I was telling everyone who would listen to stay away from the damned things. That's the way it goes - disgruntled consumers are always the loudest.

I got the YLOD. It seems to be hitting the 60gigs. Sony gave me another 60gig back though, so I'm happy that I have the greatest PS3 model back.

My launch 60gb ps3 got the YLOD back in November. Sent it in to Sony and they sent me back a refurbed 60gb with a brand spankin new shell in a timely fashion & it works great.

My launch 360 has gotten the RROD two times. The first time was around 9 months after I purchased it, and the second time was around 10 months after the first time it red-ringed. Only thing is, it sounds like a jet taking off every time I turn the thing on (which isn't very often).

I had the Yellow Light of Death on my launch PS3(60gig). I had it for 2 years before it happened. It was a good thing I bought an extended warranty.

Since I got it back, it seems that the fan runs at a higher rpm then it did before. I own 2 PS3s and the 2nd one I bought still works great. I bought it the september after launch.(Canada)

I'm on my 3rd PlayStation 3.

My launch 60GB died about a year and a half after purchase, but not because of the YLOD. My second PS3 was the first 80GB Motorstorm bundle, and that died a year after I redeemed it (YLOD) (Best Buy Warranty Exchange). Now I'm on my 3rd PS3, the normal 80GB sku and so far I've had no problems.

Not that I blame Sony for anything, I leave my system on all the time whether I'm gaming or watching media. In fact I'd say within a 24hr time span it's on for at least 18-20 of those hours.

I'm glad someone finally decided to test it out and found a solution without having to go game-less, esp when you only own one system like myself.

System would turn on .... and after about 30 secs it would show signs of freezing, slow down and finally turn off and the power light would start blinking.

I was able to do this all the time and actually never got the so called yellow light. It would just shut down and blink red.

Also, never force 1080p output from a 720p game. There's a reason why the game is in 720p!

I find it Ironic ,I read this article and then Icewakes bate comment and then the phone rings. A customer is looking for a PS3 because his just crapped out and sony is charging him 170$ to repair it because his year waranty is out. I know the customer, and between you and me, he is a heavy smoker and I`m sure the nocotine made dust glue up all over inside that console and that`s why its busted now.

Now, does this mean that the PS3 is having bigger problems then MS`s stupid ass RROD? of course not, RROD is something MS recpgnised as a huge bad ass mistake that they are paying for bigtime, I`m actually suprised people are still buying 360s. But is the PS3 perfect? Of course not. I can't believe how many of you didn't know about this, when I was at BB we got a LOT of these coming in. The yellow light issue is a wide spread issue but not as bad as RROD. If the RROD never existed the Yellow light issue would be getting far more scrutiny, but since the RROD issue is so much bigger it makes the Yellow light issue look smaller than it is. LOL

There are also a couple other issues with PS3s, one of which is unexplainable bricking out of the box, we see a small amount of that as well. The quality of the PS3 is not as great as most people think, its just better than 360, nothing like RROD.

My cousin probably out of the box had a problem with the HDMI port on his 40GB PS3. I'm saying probably, since he never used the port until recently. Machine was purchased around November 08', I think.

Sony took care of it under warranty, but instead did an exchange. He had already backed up his hard drive, but couldn't transfer all the data to the new console. He lost all his progress (unlocked characters among other things) for SF IV and some other games.

Hardware failure does happen to Sony as well... these things are highly complex and it is amazing that it itself works. I'm not talking about just the PS3, but electronics in general. There is insane amount of engineering and technology built on top of other technology.

Saving your saved data on a usb but i wish there was a Copy All option.

SF4, RE5, KZ2, and a few other games have their game saves locked. You can't copy them to a usb/flash drive and save them to your PC. You can create a back up on your HDD but if you remove it (you better if you want your HDD back from the repair center) and put it in a new PS3 (or even the one you just took it out of) the system forces you to format the drive, loosing all your data and game saves.

That's because the yellow light is rare. Most of my friends never got it. The RRoD however EVERY ONE of my friends had it AT LEAST THREE TIMES. One had it TEN times. And with all the 360 fans, if the Yellow Light was so big, they wouldn't hesitate for a moment to pounce on it.

people are getting them repaired for free, if you talk to a supervisor when you call in the issue or make a big stink they may repair it free of charge. I know several people who have experienced this, and these just were people who purchased their units from Bestbuy and bothered to come back and tell me this info, so I would imagine its pretty common to get it repaired for free.

Whats odd is I have heard 80 90 and 150 bucks for the same repair, not sure why Sony is charging different rates.

Sony wants to do the right thing and repair this for free, but since it has been kept so quiet by the media I dont think Sony wants to stir things up.

It's important for you guys, the consumers to make a stink about this because I think if this issue comes to light in the mainstream, Sony will make it official policy to repair it for free.

Don't try to keep this hush hush due to some silly fear of "xbots" teasing you. We need to get this repaired for free, and that isn't going to happen as long as the perception is out their that PS3 is bullet proof, Sony will not want to ruin that perception for nothing, people need to speak up.

It happened to my original 60GB model. In the middle of a R2 session, paused to go pee, while I was in the bathroom I heard the "beep-beep-beep" and thought WTF? When I got back the PS3 was off with the blinking light. Trying to turn it back on just resulted in the beeps and it turning off again within a second.

I sent it in to the service company ( http://www.micromedicsinc.c... - had an extended warranty with Target). Waited and waited and eventually I bought an 80GB (which, BTW, runs a LOT cooler than the 60GB) and have been very happy.
After a while the service company contacted me and said the couldn't repair it and then Target sent me a $599.99 gift card.

The only problem was nobody would refund me for my R2 disc that was stuck in the PS3, so I had to buy a new copy.
Anybody want an empty R2 case for free?

That site is being swamped, Sony should do like MS did on their official 360 forum, and make a thread with stickies telling people how to handle the YLOD issue, it seems like there are a lot of folks who have no clue what to do when they get this issue. At Bestbuy we get all these idiots bringing there 2year old consoles in for exchange or repair, you actually have to tell people to contact Sony if they don't have a store warranty.

Sony has yet to even acknowledge this officially, please don't wait six years like with the PS2 Sony.

cant agree more. i went through my second 360 and that was it for me. i have a launch 60gb ps3 and coming up on 3 years ive never had a problem. On the other hand my 360 broke 2 times in a year an a half.

I went through 2 PS1s and 3 PS2s. My PS3 60gb launch is my longest run yet with a playstation, besides my psp. Sony never even recognized their ps1 and ps2 problems, and I still love em.

My Xbox on the other hand has hand been trucking since november 2001 however my 360 had an RROD about three weeks ago. Heck, I have a 3D0 that still works and my saturn and dreamcasts are beasts that just wont quit, just like my SNES and genesis.

All these personal stories I`m seing telling us how people have not had any issues why their amazing PS3 are fine and dandy, however they still dont change the fact that the PS3 has some issues, that are effecting some people.

i agree to an extent. (i wasnt aware of the ps1 problems) the ps2 had problems at launch, but were fixed. for MS to continue to sell 360's that still have the same problems is ridiculous to me. a recall should have been done. it was nice for MS to extend the warranty on the 360 because they messed up the hardware but extending the warranty was really the cheap way out. it would have cost a ton more to recall all 360s, because they all have the problem waiting to occur, BUT it would have been the right thing to do. its a known problem and they continue to sell it, adding a warranty so WHEN it breaks they can fix it for you. thats unexceptable imo. just fix the damn problem and not push it on your consumers.

and yeah the ps3 does have problems but a 1% failure rate compared to over 33% is quite a difference. the sales of the 360 are WAYYYYYY over inflated imo. the RROD caused a lot of issues this gen and all the people that already invested in games and online for the system dont have much of a choice but to just get another 360...so my question to MS is how many actual customers do you have? not how many consoles have you 'sold'.

When i worked at the bank they tell you the key to keeping customers is to make them open up as many products as you can with the bank, which is like all the games and accessories/online service the 360 has. the more you have/buy the less likely you are to change things. its more of a hassle to switch everything to another bank (or console) if you already have so much invested.

If you have a 60GB ps3 then its most likely to happen.. Which is why I think sony got rid of it, and took off the ps2 emotion engine.. My friends PS3 YLOD first when GTA4 came out, and when he told me that story of his PS3 getting YLOD and his GTA4 being stuck inside I loled at him because I thought it was something he did..., then in october mine gets busted with YLOD and I got pissed as hell.. A game was stuck inside and it got YLOD while it was installing... we both had to pay 160.. Then I spoke to another friend of mine who has 2 ps3 and he told me the other day that his brothers ps3 got YLOD... so this issue has to be super common on the 60gb ps3s.. cause all the people i knew that had a launch or close to launch unit got YLOD.. Oh yea and sony send me a nasty refurbished ps3 with a bunch of marks and scratches in the fron.. that everytime I go to turn it on i get depressed... My ps3 was so fresh and scratchless, then they send me a pos.. and they sent my friend a ps3 thats dented open in the power button in the front so yea. expect to recieve a trash back.

It DOES exist, but as has been said before it is much less common than the RROD. I got a YLOD a few weeks ago on a BC 80GB (The motorstorm bundle).

Of course, I accidentally dumped 32oz of water and a 16oz Rockstar on one of my 40GB PS3s about a year ago and it is still playing flawlessly. My launch 60GB is still playing fine except on Unreal Engine 3 games it has weird sound problems.

All in all, much more robust hardware than the 360.

Ive got the YLOD (after almost 2years of using it, sometimes almost 3days straight). Fortunately it was fixed with the heatgun. Then i got a second YLOD (cause I left it on all night long :P) but we did the same process and now it is working fine, but it is not true that it runs quieter its actually quite the opposite, then fans are louder than before. It's been like 3 months and it is still working (im not pushing it too far though.

Just in case, i've been saving money to buy another one, but i do not want to give up on my ol' trusty PS3 cause of the Backwards comp...

I had my 60GB fixed/replaced for free and it was a launch console. The video card went out on it, but I ran it HARD! It stayed on almost 24/7 Folding@home. I can't tell you how many thousands of units I folded, and was leader of my group for a looonnnnnngggggg time. But since I got my new 60gb model, i ain't folding jack shyt!

I have contributed my efforts to the process and lost a PS3 soldier in the process. This new PS3 60gb will be treated like a baby. Hell, I even kept the packing plastic on it and cut it away from the vents, but the plastic shell is protected. This PS3 should last me for 2 more console generations.

If someone wants to know how to get your PS3 repaired for free, I will tell you how I did it step for step... easy as cake, even my girlfriend laughed about it.

just send it to Sony & they'll give a you a new PS3, or if your like me (i had disc reading problems) just open it up try to fix it, then mess it all up and then put the top back on and send it to Sony and get a free launch 60GB PS3 even with the warranty sticker damaged and ripped off ^_^ lol, yeah thats right get a new free PS3 even with the warranty sticker ripped right off

only had one problem and that was with games were a bit of glitch and the picture was jumping and when someone talk the voice could not hear so i took back to shop and got anothe rps3 60 gig with motorstorm and resistence fall of man and extra sixx axxexx for 3 the with the machine at time and it been working well for the last 25 mnths so im happy

In the UK you can insure your PS3 for i think it's £2 a month unlimited after youre years garuntee has expired.

this thing happen to me 1 time but i fixed by my own i just open my ps3 and remove the power supply and wait about 20 mins. and thats it and now no problems at all working fine

I had both the BR-DVD lens failure, and the ylod. Both times while out of warranty. The only reason I'm not pissed now is that my credit card company picked up the cost of the repairs both times.

It was DUUUSSSTTEEEYYYY! Was getting really loud too.

Cleaned her out and put some new thermal paste on it too for good measure.
