SCEA responds to February NPD, heralds Killzone 2 sales

Sony sold 276K PS3 units, 199K PSP units and 131K PS2 units in February. Sales went up across the board since January 2009, but are still down from 2008 levels. Killzone 2 sold 323K copies, becoming the fifth best-selling game of the month. Depending on your fanboy bias, this is either a disaster considering the incredible hype surrounding the title, or this is a terrific accomplishment, considering the game's two-day availability in February.

SCEA's Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and the PlayStation Network, responded to this month's NPD numbers. "In February, we had a tremendous kickstart to what promises to be another record year for the PlayStation brand with the launch of mega blockbuster hit Killzone 2, which ranked in the top 5 with only two days of sales in February and has been garnering extraordinary reviews, and a noteworthy 92 Metacritic score. We have no doubt this game will deliver a next gen experience and will be responsible for driving hardware sales throughout the year."

i dont need a 360 when i can get most 360 games on PC and the ones i cant get I play at my mates house. maybe when the price cheap enough i shall go for a 360 but there is just no need at the moment as the 360 doesnt have that many good exclusive games.

if you don't care then kudos to you. I like to see the numbers and compare/contrast what's going on in gaming sales. Gives me a good barometer of where the industry is and what the public wants.

I do the same thing for movies. I look at the box office numbers to see if a movie I enjoyed did well. If it does you're almost guaranteed a sequel.

And KZ2 had soooooo much hype around it that you almost had to look and see what it did at retail. Granted, the numbers only represent 2 days, but to sell that much in 2 days is pretty darn good. If you extrapolate those numbers to have the game out just as long as SF4, it looks like KZ2 would've been a monster.

Either way, I'm enjoying the hell outta the game. I just got my medic badge and I can't wait to get some other badges.

It arguably met all of those expectations IMHO its better than Halo. Halo's gameplay wasnt groundbreaking but neither is KZ2 that dosent stop them from being good games.

The Difference is M$ bought public opinion with a 10 million dollar marketing campaign.(halo nascar,halo Mt. Dew, Halo on sale at 7-11, Paid actors to appear in halo commercials) Killzone is selling well and it wont ever have that type of exposure. Sony likes good games to speak for themselves even MGS4 didnt put up those numbers overnight. MGS has history on it side.

KZ2 is not Sony's biggest exclsuive. That goes to GT which is Sony's halo in terms of big franchise.

As for Game selling the most on first few days. That is true for x360 games but not for PS games. Gears 2 sold about 60% of its total sales sofar on launchday. None of PS games are like that. Even MGS4. PS games sells consistently in their life time.

The reason for the difference is the marketing strategies between Sony and MS. MS goes all out before launch day which garuntees great first day sales but there are only x number of customers you can sell a game to. So after selling a x360 game to a huge chunk of x360 owners in the first week. It leaves much less people to sell the game to later on. Sony on the otherhand still market their games in small dosage through a longer period of time. This is why in the end most PS games sells at least a million copies.

First days sales and all the hoopla about it is a MS manufactured marketing tool. It has worked a charm on you folks. Never before have i seen gamers put so much emphisis on first day sales to gauge weather a game is a sales flop or not. I have been around since the Atari days and it was only when MS entered the market that i have seen this starting with Halo. LBP like most other PS games didn't sell a million on firstday but eventually sold a million like most other x360 games and yet you x360 fans deemed it to be a flop just from first day sales.

I guess. It really does show the difference between MS and Sony as well as their fans.

MS and their fans is all about the now but Sony and their fans is about long term.

It didn't move consoles? February is higher than January. I just love it how people compare this to established franchises pointing out how they've done better in two days.

Everyone was calling LBP a failure and a flop because it didn't sell huge on the first week. Oh, but apparently the game has legs because it sits at over 600+k in the US and continues to sell.

Did you see the same NPD numbers as I did? Because it looked to me that in the US alone the PS3 moved almost 80,000 consoles more than the previous month. To put that into context, the month over month increase in 360 sales worldwide after the release of Halo 3 was just over 100,000. And we all know KZ2 came right at the end of the month.

And who on earth said that Killzone 2 would move more units than MGS4? It over one million in 3 weeks it's already cracked into the top 10% of all games. The vast majority of titles don't make 1 million in their entire run.

Buddy KZ2 had a lot of marketing, I saw the bullet ad on TSN, CBC, Spike, CW11, and Comedy Central.

Fact is Halo 3 sold 5 times more than KZ2 first day when it had the same installbase in the U.S. that the Playstation 3 has now.

But this doesn't take away from the fact that KZ2 is a good game.

Gears 2 also had an estimated 8 million dollar budget to help market the game.

KZ2 had a pathetic budget in comparison to Gears 2, and manages to sell.
Sony are in this for the long haul while Microsoft is in it for the burst sales.

As posted before, I will say that it looks the game had decent sales when you look at Worldwide, though it could habe done better. Marketing not enough, and think one crucial mistake they made from a business perspective, with a game this hyped up, is to release a demo. Like epic with Gears series just let the hype build and let the masses buy it. This serves two purposes, A: it makes sure that people dont have time to playtest and any bugs that get a lot of mention can just be patched, eg. Gear 1+2 and you dont lose sales, esp with a game this hyped. Also, many tend to stock up on demos and not buy the real thing, lack of demo eliminates that and also, the novelty can wear off in the time that people play the demo until release. At most maybe release a demo after a month or something.

A game this well reviewed, with this good visuals and the hype should have sold more....

- halo wars sucks ( i have all 3 halo games)
- Killzone 2 came out from killzone 1 which sucked compared 2 halo3 which had halo and halo 2 to get people to buy the 3rd.
- to me 323k in america only is amazing.
- that 1.1 million pre-orders were 4 europe, people just assumed is was for here.

For 2 days thats really good in my opinion. Its just these dumb fanboys who ONLY care about sales, and who always bash games that arent on their console just cuz they're jealous. 326,000 in 2 days is very good

Oh, didn't we heard the same thing about LBP the fanboys were saying lets wait for Nov and you will see the selling power of LBP. Well, LBP wasn't even in the TOP 20 of the NPD chart.

And this March will be like Nov of last lear, full of heavy hitters on all platforms to knock off the hype and sale of KZ2.

March release includes RE5, Halo Wars, Pokemon Platinum, GTA Chinatown War, GH Metallica, Legend of Wrestlemania.

Why do you care so much about the sales of KZ2? besides the usual "i told you so" posts you have made about it? Did you have stock in it and because it hasn't sold halo like numbers you are pissed about it?

Have you even tried it for yourself? If you enjoy a game, sells won't make you enjoy it more. I like Gears 1 and 2 even if they would have only sold 300k copies total.

It kinda reminds me of the mentality some people have when it comes to judging games , movies, or music. They listen or play something for first time and generally enjoy it or they really hate it. Then they wait and see how their peers like it and change their opinions accordingly. Not saying you or others are all guilty of this but surely this does happen.

I see this happening when it comes to talk about sales. You play it and really enjoy it but when you see the sales aren't as high as you like, you start thinking "damn, maybe i didn't enjoy it as much as i thought" or vice versa

And regardless of the spin you are accusing sony fanboys of, thats still good sales for two days in america alone, especially since the advertising sucked ass for the game ( i liked the commercial but they should have done more ). Calling it "spin" doesn't negate the impressive 2 day numbers it had for the US

You could be right. But I would not go around claiming that Killzone 2 is going to have a drop in sales. K2 is popular already and it shows of the power of PS3. People will buy it. Just you wait and see. If you had the game you would see the massive amount of people playing it online.

K2 indeed had good sales, im waiting for the March's NPD because many people (like me) dsnt have always the $$ to buy it 1 day, still ill buy this for sure in March.

Killzone 2 is a really good game but it's strange .. i still don't need a PS3. XBox 360 is enough for me and the best choice when it comes to multiplayer games.

I can understand the jealousy from the 360 fans. Especially, with the low scores their recent games have been receiving. I like how everyone is quiet about Race Pro and Star Ocean when they were also released in February.

Enjoy your lackluster games while the rest of us benefit from innovation.

Dude if Star Ocean 4 was on PS3 you would want it. Unless you are not into RPG's. With that said Sony is having a killer year so far. Killzone 2 is the best game I have played since Bioshock.

jealousy? lol even without the PS3 I'm flooded with games. I still haven't played Half Life 2 and Ninja Gaiden. I just recently beat Uncharted. I finished COD WAW last week. I'm just starting on Fable 2. After that I have RE 5. Than I'll jump into KZ2, FNR 4, Star Ocean 4, Halo ODST, and who knows after that. I have a life with my fiancee, I barely get to play, for some of us the 360 has almost too many.

Good lord, I've never seen so much spin from both sides as I've seen surrounding this game. Yes, the game did not put up Halo 3 like sales but considering the state of the economy and the limited availability in February for KZ2, it did quite well. Not to mention that this is the NPD. The 360fanboys sure love to tote around the NPD but completely forget that the NPD != Worlwide sales. Overall, Sony is just trying to comfort PS3 owners with the news heading into GDC and E3 against an onslaught of Microsoft PR backlash. Be a gamer, play a game.
