Wii Sports Now the Best-Selling Game of All Time

Wii Sports has surpassed Super Mario Brothers as the best-selling game of all time. With over 40 million units sold (obviously including bundles), Wii Sports is estimated to break the 50 million mark while resting comfortably at the top of the list. Check out the closest competition as Ripten lists the top 10 best-selling games of all time.

Vault Boy5582d ago

That shouldn't count since it's a pack-in. If PS2 had a pack-in game it would be over 100 million.

Twizlex5582d ago

True, but Sony didn't pack in a game so...

Cookigaki5582d ago

Yes, Nintendo could take out Wii Sports and sell Wii for $199 but they won't. People think it is free game but they are paying for it.

Sony PlayStation 35582d ago

Wii Sports is more like a Wii Motion Tutorial than a game. It's still fun though

McDaygo5582d ago

Super Mario Bros was a pack-in game too.

Panthers5582d ago

It should count because Mario was also a Pack-in. Not that I like Wiisports, but if you dont count that, you cant count Mario.

0verdrive5582d ago

this does seem like a hallow victory, i mean, do they even sell wii sports alone without the wii? assuming that they dont even sell a wii without the game, the attach rate of that game to the console is going to be 1:1. no game has ever done that, or ever will.

i honestly dont think that wii sports should count... its just so... i dunno... cheap.

Crazywhitie5582d ago

I agree this story shouldn't have been written... you tell me One Person that Bought a Wii For Wiisports... the Wii is 250 WiiSports is FREE.. therefore it hasn't sold anything

The Great Melon5582d ago

I don't think you should count Mario or Wii Sports....

Tarasque5581d ago

Sorry packaged in games does not count in sales in my book. All those top 10's are Nintendo from old and DS games. You don't see any N64 games up there and you definitely don't see any gamecube games up there.

salgoods5581d ago

sales DO = quality of a game. according to 360 fans, since their games sell more than PS3's, PS3 doesnt have any good games. yeah right...

BRG90005581d ago

It takes talent to bring Xbox vs. PS3 fanboyism into an article about neither console. Well played sir.

Voiceofreason5581d ago

Sony wouldnt pack in a game. They are the reason that games are not packed in today. They'd rather you pay for the game.

Odd though that you consider it wrong of a company to give you a game for buying their product and think a company needs recognition for not giving you a single thing for supporting them. Good ol Sony fans.. I wouldnt expect anything less.

Mini Mario5581d ago (Edited 5581d ago )

"Yes, Nintendo could take out Wii Sports and sell Wii for $199 but they won't. People think it is free game but they are paying for it."

You do realize Japan (a big slice of the pie) doesnt pack it in with there systems.

Again, plz using there "assumptions" as fact.

Milk is for Babies5582d ago

Wow. I'm actually almost surprised that Super Mario stayed on top as long as it did, but I guess nobody else bundles games like nintendo.

Vault Boy5582d ago

Yes, but imagine if they did. If Sony packaged a game, even a crappy one, with every PS2 it would be at the top of the list. It really doesn't count IMO because people aren't buying the game, they're buying a Wii.

Milk is for Babies5582d ago

I get what you're saying and I kinda agree, but I wouldn't really say it "doesn't count". The other guys could do it too if they wanted.

Twizlex5582d ago

Yeah, and it only makes sense that a bundled game dethrones Super Mario since it was also a bundled game.

KobeT245582d ago (Edited 5582d ago )

What have we done...

Do you realize the list is dominated by Nintendo titles.

Vault Boy5582d ago

They shoulda never gave you b*tches money!

Vault Boy5582d ago

Why the disagree? I was just making a Dave Chappelle joke.

meepmoopmeep5582d ago

and going by some people's logic
sales means it's the BEST GAME EVAR!!!

:)

Twizlex5582d ago

Wait, are you trying to say it's not? Sales DO equal greatness, and review scores also determine "AAA" games... and the Wii can cook you breakfast.

If you believe any of that, I have some beans I'd like to sell you...

Bob Dole5581d ago

Bob Dole will take the beans over Wii Sports :)

Bundled shovelware. Lol Nintendo.

Sarcasm5582d ago

Not really. Wii Sports is the best game on the Nintendo Wii.

I mean it literally with no sarcasm (despite my name)

Ivix5581d ago

@4.1 I guess you've never played any other Wii game before?

Mutley4165582d ago

WOW!!!...ummm How many has WOW Sold!!!

Switch Sports Will Never Live Up To Wii Sports

The Switch just isn't equipped for a killer sports title like the Wii was

A lot of the points made here are true, yet let's give it a chance, because like the author said, the Wii was a motion control console and everyone did view it as such while the switch is not, so the way people view the game determines how much they invested in it, so again let's give it a chance and see

Ratty795d ago

Wii sports was truly atrocious and you're saying Switch Sports will be even worse? It does not bode well for Switch Sports indeed.

Fntastic795d ago

Wii Sports was ok for screwing around, but the games lacked depth. Also I'm not sure why it seems like they decided to stick with the automatic player movement so all you need to do is swing to hit something. Very noob friendly but not as much fun IMO.

CrimsonWing69795d ago (Edited 795d ago )

Wii Sports was THE game for casuals. I don’t feel many casuals own the Switch. I can’t see this doing the numbers Wii Sports did.

Einhander1971795d ago

Course it won't, the Wii was a phenomenon. Something new with the motion tech. A curiosity to almost everyone. Obviously Switch sports won't create the same impact.

Here's Why Wii Sports Needs To Come To the Nintendo Switch

Nintendo could be sitting on a gold mine with a past favorite.

Because we all miss accidentally throwing our Wiimotes at the TV, so let's throw some Joy-Cons.

Neonridr826d ago

VR is the same way, wrist straps for a reason.

Neonridr826d ago

I loved the golf from Wii Sports Resort.

Cuzizkool826d ago

I was always confused by Nintendo’s decision to kill the franchise. “Super” stayed with Mario titles even after the Super Nintendo. They can still use the Wii name. Hell it’s been so long that releasing a new one, or even an HD remaster, will tap into that nostalgia market.

DazaMc825d ago

Super Mario launched on the NES not the Super NES.

septemberindecember825d ago

Super was never because of the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Bros launched on the NES. The Super is because it's an indirect sequel to Mario Bros.

They can just call it Nintendo Sports or something, but using the Wii name would be a bit confusing.

Bigman4k825d ago

Yeah i agree but i don't think Nintendo will be bringing wii sports to the Nintendo Switch samething goes for diddykong racing

shadowT1135d ago (Edited 1135d ago )

Missing Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS5 in this list. Love this game!

Orchard1135d ago

They probably didn't include it (and a bunch of others) because of their criteria for "lasting influence on the industry".

SMMM is a good game, but it doesn't stand out enough to have THAT huge of an impact on the industry as a whole - especially when compared to games like Mario, Halo & Tetris.

Sonic-and-Crash1135d ago (Edited 1135d ago )

i would also add Sonic and Crash (pun intended lol) ...Sonic 1 on MD is a all time classic game that helped MegaDrive to separate itself and explode in sales... also Crash Bandicoot ...while not exactly a launch game..it was pretty close to launch for PS1 (in Europe was almost a launch game as PS1 released later here) and trademarked the start of PS era

Orchard1135d ago

Totally agree - those two games were huge for the industry & direction of platformers.

p.s. love the irony of your name for this post :P

jaymacx1135d ago

Sonic was not a launch game. I keep seeing people say it was, but maybe they were so young it’s when they got the console. Crash bandicoot definitely wasn’t even close to being a launch game . These games are system sellers though.

septemberindecember1135d ago

@Sonic-and-Crash

Neither Sonic nor Crash released anywhere close to the launch of their respective consoles. Crash released a full year after the western launch of the PS1 (and two full years after Japan's launch), and Sonic released two years after Genesis in US, and a year after Mega Drive in PAL regions.

CorndogBurglar1134d ago

I knoe it wasn't a massive influence on the industry, but Condemned: Criminal Origins on Xbox 360 is one of my all time favorite launch games.

Ok you love it, and that's great but I think you are missing the point of the article... In any case to judge something like this I think you need time, currently we can see the tree but not the forest

darthv721135d ago

Soul Calibur... that game still holds up to this day. Such an excellent game.

jgilbert111135d ago

That game has aged like a fine wine. Still go back to it all the time on my Dreamcast.

Minute Man 7211135d ago

I should have never sold my Dreamcast

ZeekQuattro1135d ago

Mitsurugi was seriously wounded but the soul still burns.

Orchard1135d ago

Super Mario 64 + Halo were my favorite launch games - outstanding games.

Shuckylad1135d ago

Super Mario World SNES
Mario 64 N64
Halo Xbox
Motorstorm Ps3
Zelda BOTW switch

The Wood1135d ago

Motor storm. . . Yeah. . Underrated

Jericho13371135d ago

Not a launch title though.

Omegasyde1135d ago

In USA not a launch title but yes in EU etc.

frostypants1135d ago

Super Mario World is still my my favorite of all Mario games and in the discussion for best side scroller ever.
