Blu-ray Sales Sail To All-Time Highs

Hollywood in high def:Further confirmation that Blu-ray sales continue to surge:
* Blu-ray had its best month of sales ever in October, with consumers buying 2.3 million discs, according to Home Media Research. That's the first time disc sales have surpassed the 2 million mark in a single month and it's nearly five times greater than the 470,000 discs purchased in October 2007.
* For the year so far, Blu-ray disc sales are running about four times higher than in 2007.
* Blu-ray disc sales have crossed the 20 million mark since the format was introduced, with 14 million of those (70%) sold this year.
* In October the 1,000 Blu-ray title was been announced for release.
And all of that is in the U.S. alone. Elsewhere the picture is even brighter in some countries such as Japan, where Blu-ray hardware sales already represent more than 50% of the total optical disc market and are expected to increase heading into the peak selling season. According to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, Blu-ray recorder and player shipments reached 138,000 units in the 12 months ending in September, or 107 times the previous year's tally. It also noted that Blu-ray hardware now accounts for 31% of all home entertainment recorder and player sales.
Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Wal-Mart recently announced a big expansion of its Blu-ray Disc inventories and reported a 2.4% gain in same-store sales during October.

Im getting the Matrix trilogy on Blu Ray for Christmas and Dark Knight of course in a few days. For me its never been about PS3 versus 360 (I am blessed to own both), its about quality of picture. While some upconverting dvd players do a really good job it just doesn't stack up to the picture of a blu ray movie. Are the mainstream gonna adopt it? who knows. But i know that they're very impressive and i pray the price comes down a bit more so I can re-buy some of the classics I already own.

It's been proven that as long as the PS3 is only $100 more than the 360 it will outsell the 360. Look back at before 360's price drop. And if all the PS3 rumors circling around the web are true (many of which are starting to take place) then I think we will see PS3 quickly pull the 360 back within it's grasp sell-wise.

I think is working on their new console, and we'll see it in 2011, but they won't launch it until 2012.

I think Blu ray will do just fine and will be the current video format. On Black Friday you could buy Blu ray players for $130, and starting next year the standard price should drop down to $199. And the year after that I guarantee that we will see $99 Blu ray players, and Blu ray discs prices to drop to the price of current DVDs. So I expect Blu ray to do just fine.

Everyone says Digital Downloads are the way to go, and I agree, but until Space no longer becomes an issue (when a 1TB HDD's standard price becomes less than $100), and large downloads can be done in mere minutes, then digital downloads won't be ready to go mainstream.

I think the world will be completely ready for digital download after Blu ray is done (in another 5 - 6 years Digital downloads will start going mainstream).

I guess your right except I saw for myself how much impact Blu-Ray and Disney did together.Disney was a crucial partner and maybe would have never required the PS3.It would have been slower but certain.
Its funny how if Sony's movie division was leading the Sony gaming division,they would have things a lot easier.

Sony Movie Studios talks to Blockbuster,Paramount,Disney and pays for exclusive rights to films.They make money by talking to retailers like Wal-Mart to promote Blu-Ray and make some money especially today.

Sony's gaming division is a sloth that doesn't advertise,doesn't secure exclusives and makes little effort to get exclusive games in a faster rate.If Sony Movie studios was in charge,they wouldn't have lost Final Fantasy XIII,GTA4 or Tekken 6.Its amazing to see Sony's gaming division make blunders again and again.

BluRay won't be an epic failure, it is just that it doesn't look like it has the legs to kick the "DVD" format to the curb anytime soon.

Bluray players too expensive as is the physical media. Until they can get this format at least half the price as it is now, Bluray will continue to sell poor. "Yes", I said sell poor. Bluray is still a tiny fraction of the market.

And what is with these articles. Of course bluray sales should be waayyy higher than last year, there are more PS3's and stand alone players on the market from last year, you can get bluray movies for cheaper and the movie selection is a lot larger. You don't have HD-DVD to worry about and now can be reassured that this format will be the winner out of the two.

And still, bluray hasn't made a huge impact on the market. I hope this turns around and bluray sells great, the picture and sound are fantastic when you have the right equipment.

In Feburary 2009, Analog Broadcasting on TV is shutting down, and is being Replaced by Digital Broadcasting in the US. if you do not have a Digital TV, you have to buy a Digital-Analog converter Box or Buy a New TV that Supports Digital Broadcasting. THis is going to force people to upgrade their living rooms with Digital TVs, Primarly High Def TVs.

What does any of that have to do with the manufacture of standard definition televisions and the rest of the whole world? Standard definition televisions will still be manufactured, sold and in use all over the world after February of 2009. Standard definition broadcasts will still be transmitted in countries all over the world after February of 2009.

If Blu-ray didn't exist then there would be no way to buy a HD movie without a computer/the internet. What kind of a choice is that for consumers?

I think that this fact alone makes it pretty hard to argue against the need for a high capacity disc like Blu-ray existing in the market.

I imagine that there will be other uses for it too in the future since the size of digital information is always growing as it gets more complicated/detailed/advanced as time goes on.

High Def is going to be a lot more mainstream after this holiday season. I was out shopping this morning and the Wal-Mart I was in moved three pallets of HDTV's and at least 50 Magnavox Blu-Ray players in less than 45 minutes.

Personally I wouldn't have wanted that Magnavox player because it was profile 1.1, but nevertheless there are going to be tens of thousands more HD-enabled families out there next year.

Tests have shown that the PS3 is a great Blu-ray player. Better than most infact due to its cpu power, which especially helps startup time. It's also futureproof, which cannot be said for many (if any) 200$ standalone players.

hey there are others in my house. I often game on the other HD sets in my house and other people watch movies in my house. Blu-ray movies are great and I will need players in my other rooms as well. Why would I put a PS3 in all my rooms. I saw a BR player for $130 and that would be good for my bed room. If BR movies came packed with the DVD version then I would not need more players but I would be crazy to purchase the BR and DVD version of a movie. That is the one thing holding me back from jumping in with BR and my only movie format. I liked it when HD-DVD had the dual format movies.

they are talking about it. i use netflix on my ps3 with playon and heard that cablevision wants to do an online dvr service as well.

here is the problem. these companies want to charge more for standard cable tv service. thats not including the services like online dvr and digital distribution. the higher the definition the higher the companies want to charge for that service making physical media still practical.

i love digital distribution. but when you are streaming to 2 or 3 ps3's, running 2 iMacs, a laptop and a pc as a media server. bandwidth becomes an issue and digital distribution is more of a novelty than a full blown replacement for my physical media.

also who are you going to get your distribution from? CBS? ABC? NBC? APPLE? Microsoft? Sony? Lionsgate? Netflix?

what device will their DRM allow you to play it on?

how many continues plays will you have and for how long? (netflix has their digital streaming set that if you view it on one device you cant view it on another for 2 hours)

can you tote your collection with you to the babysitters house or to a friends house? if you can will it be compatible? will you have to share your account info to share it?

and what everyone keeps saying about blu ray its too expensive.. you think companies are really trying to keep dvd's around so that you can have cheap acces? or want to replace it with digital media for cheap prices for you?

nope they want to replace it with a medium that will continue to bring in revenue.

a final example is that you dont need an HDTV for when cable tv goes digital. you just need a tuner. got one for my moms kitchen.

but i want to see anyone go out right now and find a tube tv. you dont need an hdtv but try to find a tube tv on sale anywhere. you may find an hd tube tv, but for the current prices you might as well buy an hdtv.

same will happen with blu ray. you will go to your local video store to buy a dvd and only find blu ray. and most blu ray's come with a digital copy as well.

you will already notice that when a movie on blu ray and dvd has an ad on television. you barely see the dvd box just the size of the box in the shadow of the blu ray. also similar to early dvd days when you would see that one dvd had wide screen, one was standard screen. one had features and one didnt. you'll notice the dvd's are coming with less and less features and less promotion.

its not the consumer price companies care about its manufacturing costs. when it costs just a little less to manufacture blu ray discs and players it will just be financially sound to drop standard dvd.

the funny thing about the blu ray haters is that they are acting as if the high definition physical media war is still on. LOL it's over.. let it go...

Blu-ray is going to be fine. I always knew this. It is the successor to DVD.

Prices on HDTVs are dropping very quickly (you don't need a huge one to enjoy Blu-ray...720p is just fine), and Blu-ray players are now close to the 200 dollar price point.

A more noticeable shift towards Blu-ray is going to continue to happen now that prices are becoming semi-affordable to borderline acceptable, on the TVs and the players.

since when are ps2 games played in hd? to my eyes ps2 games are still being outputed at a lower resolution then hd 720p, when sony anouces a firmware patch saying ps2 games can now be played at upscaled to 720p resolution then you can say ps2 games can be played in hd. until then its just being play on hd tv. i would also like to see sony patch ps2 games to not show a black border around my ps2 games when played on the ps3. this is sure to happend when ps2 production is going to end. we should see and anoucement soon on this. sony will have to cut production cost soon.
