I was skeptical about this whole NXE thing because I was pretty satisfied with the dashboard but after downloading it and playing with it a little bit its so much better than the dashboard! The avatars are pretty gay though but everything else is a big improvement from the dashboard. Its a lot better looking and more organized. Updates like this makes me feel better about paying $50 a year for XBL! Great job M$!

It's ok... Nothing very interesting in it though. The most interesting aspect of it, Netflix, is nowhere to be found in Europe so this update basically boils down to a skin change for a user like me who doesn't care about the community part of Live. I really like the fact that its more responsive though.

Very slick and very responsive. There is a lot of backtracking in the menus however. Other than that, the avatars still suck (even after creating one), but it is a fast process. Good job MS! Still a little too Nintendo-ish and not as sophisticated as the XMB, but an awesome improvement over the blades. There are ads everywhere though.

Huh? There's a lot more "going on" in NXE than XMB, more animation, better organization, navigation and features.

NXE is vastly superior to the UI on Wii or PS3. Not to mention the *featuers* -- which really put NXE way out front.

What is so "crap" about the Avatars?

They are 3D people -- no more, no less. They are a superior implementation than currently in the market. And they will be used to "embody" the player in games (like Kingdom for Keflings (which, is pretty good actually)).

They are excellent in fact. Good move by MS. They are more customizeable, more refined and more varied than previous implementations. And, in the future, you know that they will become varied based on Achievements and Medals.

I just downloaded the NXE. I'm telling you... it's sick as f*ck.

I expected this new update to be lame as hell. Avatars, right? Wack huh. But I tried them out, made my own little badass, and what do ya know, it's not so bad after all. The intro video after downloading blew me away. I felt like it was the N64 days all over again. Well, more so I felt like I was on mushrooms.

Originality is what best describes this update. It's smooth, efficiant, and totally appealing. I hope Sony's Home does good, I really do. I'm not going to be all Xbox-this, Xbox-that anymore. If Home does as good as the NXE, all hardcore gamers will have something be happy about.

The naysayers will say the nay but I'll still know what's real. The NXE prevailed, and I hope PS3 fans are left with something kickass in Home as well.

Anyway, quick review, I feel the same indifference I did to it before the update though. It's just an interface change, some for the better, some for the worse. I personally think the blades were better. To be honest though, none of the added features even benefit me, party modes and Netflix are pretty much useless for me. I basically got a redesigned dashboard which I'm indifferent to and avatars which I think are lame as all hell.

As for avatars, the customisation choices are kind of limited, so my Avatar just looks like some yuppie, which is really not what I was going for.

His comments about Netflix and specially the party system tell you what kind of player he is. You can tell he is obviously a Sony fan... Disconnected player that mostly play single player games and do not understand the value of being able to organize groups where you can voice chat with up to 8 friends and carry them over to play the same matches with other people online.. instead of playing with your friends without being able to speak to them, having to invite them one at a time or voice chat where everyone can hear what you and your friends are saying.

As a PS2 fan that never owned an original xbox I can tell you... it's very hard to understand what you are missing until become more than just a single player gamer my most PS3 owners are. They get excited because they "are playing online." though they it becomes a problem if you want to communicate and invites various people.
I remember a friend of mine that love Metal Gear online for the PS2... because he could "play online"... I would tell him... how do you enjoy this? Those guys can be bots and you wouldn't tell..

Liking the update. Took no time at all. Menus are crisp and bright with lots of artwork everywhere. It looks a lot more pro overall. The pop up blade section is a bit dull and could have been made a bit sharper - otherwise so far so good. Nice one MS. I agree with comments above about the lots of back tracking in menus which can get many levels deep. Is there a one button return to root menu?

Can't be bothered to install a game yet as I have 2 machines and the disc loading or noise has never been and issue with a decent 5.1 setup.

I have to say that the 'avatar program' which is obviously a little seperate application is soooooooooo cheesy with its kiddy music and really is tring to be the Wii I have downstairs. (I bet the missus will like it though). Not really suiting my seasoned gamer attitude, Having said that I look forward to seeing some comedy avatars in the near future like on the Wii. I want mine to look like captain kirk in his mutton chop burner phase.

So my first impressions are a thumbs up (apart from the cheesy thing).

@edhe, I have a VGA cable and I'd use it but.. when I connect my 360 to my TV through VGA, a lot of my TV settings aren't usable and I have my PS3 and 360 set up rather great with the sharpness levels and color levels to the point where most of my games (and the great ones on PS3) have MINIMAL jaggies

It's not a TV setting, go to your video options in the console settings area.

Also if you've tagged tha tinput with 'PC' or something you might want to change the tag to 'game' or something else. I noticed that when i changed my HDMI to 'PC' it forced a setting on me, i changed it to hd dvd [for a laugh] and got my settings back.

Installed LOTR BFME2 and it works like a dream.

Started a party with 1 friend and started a game on LOTR and we were chatting away then he says a friend wants to join the party........

I was wondering how it was gonna work!

The 3 of us were all chatting even though he was playing on COD5 campaign - the 360 even gives you the option of Game Chat or Party Chat if need be!

I thought that you would have to be in the dashboard or in the same game to have 8 player party chat but not so - Microsoft have really moved the goalposts with this update.

best update ever, everything is fast and smooth, installing works great and lowers noise greatly.

avatars are kool and yet non intrusive, other then when you first start and have to choose one, either pick one or create one and once thats done

you can hid your avatar in a way, since its really never in YOUR face, even in my xbox its the second box to the right, so its not in your face, but the blessing in all this is you can use your own gamerpic for everything or a snapped pic you took with your cam.

It took maybe 3 minutes to download and update my box this morning b4 heading off to work. I personally like the avatars, and you dont need to use them so its no big deal. But I like seeing my avatar when I play Wii stuff, so I get an even better looking one for my 360 now.

The guide button menu is real slick, letting you do pretty much everything in a stripped-down blade interface if need be. Text looks much sharper as well. Will try out the netflix and all that when I get a chance later. Definitely love the big box art for the games, especially the arcade titles...as silly as it sounds it makes them feel a bit more substantial since they never came with a box in the first place.

One thing I got after using it for 10 minutes is it feels much smaller, which is what they were going for. Everything feels more centered rather than scattered around. Great update.

Fast update, Netflix, HDD optional install, Crisp fast menu's...and the Chat system...OMG...THANK YOU. Had a 5 way chat going with friends... 2 playing Gears, others on Dash...worked flawlessly! Launched a game and invited the whole party to join me.

Its not a mii, its a mixture. I now call the dashboard my WiiS3.
The miis, the icons, although p155 taking apart it looks nice, is fast and much better in my opinion.

The only problems for me so far are that some areas won't connect to the marketplace but you can from other areas. I always get a time out and an error code but I'm sure they'll sort it soon.

i would hope so, the xmb is a series of small png images, if it can't display those smoothly then it has a problem

It's nice to see some color!..and It's literally flawless!..No problems what so ever!..they we're ready for this!..I fu*kin love the Avatars!..they have literally killed the Mii's!..who cares if they ripped em off!..Rare did a great job designing them!...and putting games on the hard drive is so fast!...It was like X-mas morning today!!!
