Phoenix Games reviews Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009

When a bear kills your Russian friend during a hunting trip, you swear to avenge him by killing a lot of beautiful animals. Welcome to the latest installment of one of the odder niche video games on the market.

"Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009" is not what it may seem to the uninitiated. You don't just hang back and wait to kill animals as they walk by. But fans of hunting and, obviously, fans of this series will likely find a good time if they want one. That's what makes the game a bit "review-proof." Some of you will buy it, some of you will rent it, and some of you will keep walking.

I'd like to get this game just to piss people off with... "Oh look at the cute Bunny... BLAM!!!"

Maybe the controls are kind of like COD? I would pick up for like 20 bucks just for kicks once price goes down

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 is about more than just shooting animals

Activision is apparently putting a lot of production value into this latest Cabela's title, tapping Brad Santos, screenwriter and creative director, to pen the tale of Cole Rainsford, who has joined his estranged father in the African safari to hunt dangerous animals terrorizing local villages there. See, kids? Hunting is a noble pursuit.

GamesRadar: Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009 Review

Sadly, Cabela's 2009 is a mess overall. Tracking in Hunter Sense is way too difficult because trails are tricky to find; the mission structure is disjointed; and the graphics are rougher than a bear's bum. Best leave this one out in the wilderness.

You'll love:
* Has an actual storyline
* Punching lions
* Animal attack set pieces

You'll hate:
* Possibly the ugliest next-gen game
* Restricted exploration
* Corny mission goals
