Guess Sony perfectly understands that without a price cut they loose big - if you would consider success is solely based on numbers sold. For them, however, it could mean, find a way to justify not to sink even more money into the business, but getting some in return. Well, now, if you have a huge margin to play with, well, yes, then #sold will have an impact on your bottom line. However, if you just kill your profits or, worse, increase your debt, you'd think twice if you want to sell more.

No doubt, lowering the price will sell more PS3s. And it is a pain for a customer to go out buy a "toy" for $400 right now. I understand. But from a business perspective, they won't lower the price unless they can reduce the costs even further until this makes sense. No whining in the world will change that.

I am pretty sure there is a road map to a price cut, just - as a pity for some - it won't happen this year. But, compares to MS (not to Nintendo, I guess), there is room to get the price down. Wii can also go down below $200, I suppose, but will the 360 ever drop further ? I give MS the benefit of the moment, it'll be way harder as soon as PS3 hits $299, which it will sooner or later.

Wow good numbers for the 360 with it's price cut but that was expected. I thought the ps3 would be a little higher, I think the 200 mark would have been just right. I would have to say the 360 actually effected the ps3 sales this time around. I also think the main contribution to this was Price cut plus Rockband being exclusive for a month. I think Nov is going to go to the 360 also with gears of war.

Even with the Numbers, I know Sony is not worried and expected these kind of results because they're were not going to give the ps3 a price cut. I think the ps3 still held it's own though.

What can't you understand? Sony can not afford a price cut right now. Have you seem their losses? They cannot do that right now. Ken Kutaragi, for all he's done for us gamers, put too much into the system. It is true that the PS3 seems future proof but cost cutting did not seem to be apart of the plan at launch. The original PS3 was over engineered and Kutaragi's successor Kaz Hirai, has had one hell of a time making the system profitable. Kazz has massive losses to try to turn around, Making those losses bigger will not help the situation.

It's NPD after all. North America only and as we all know, the price cut for MS had the biggest impact on North American numbers and only slight impact on sales elsewhere. Anybody surprised by this hike in sales and braging about it just sounds silly. In 2008, in North-America the PS3 has autsold the 360 by 50600 units including the October NPD numbers. So, PS3 is doing fine if you look at what Microsoft had to to do achieve this months numbers (price-cut).

Just add all of the X360 and PS3 2008 NPD numbers together and you'll see the PS3 still sold more than 50600 units.

But the year isnt over though. There are still 2 more months in 2008.

Personally I think the PS3 will sell more then 360 at the end of the console war. Why? Because if the PS3 can keep up with the 360 sales despite having a higher price, than it can only get better for the PS3.

360 2,459,200 (22.6%, +0.7%)
PS3 2,441,400 (22.4%, -1.3%)

360 just pulled ahead in october, and if it stays ahead with this momentum, it'll probably come out over a couple hundred thousand if not more.

Edit: @Happy Face. Come on now... system sellers don't usually work as zero day effects. It's not like somebody who wants LittleBigPlanet is waiting for the day the game comes out to buy the console to play it on. People have been buying PS3's for two years now, and many of them were partially (and some wholly, I'm sure) influenced by the existence and prospect of LittleBigPlanet. Others will be buying it gradually as they get paychecks, or realize that it is actually finally out, etc. (remember, a lot of people had no clue when they could actually go buy it due to the confusing delay). As more gamers who haven't entered the next gen (read: this gen) or bought a PS3 find out about LittleBigPlanet and decide that they want it, they will buy PS3's. It's not a day one factor on system sales. It will, however, have an effect this holiday. Or, at least, it should (ideally).

The game was only out for 3 full sales days in October, and even considering that many stores didn't get them until November for some reason unbeknownst to me.

Also, Resistance 2 wasn't out in October at all.

It is almost a 2 to 1 ratio for all three consoles. Wii outsells 360 roughly 2 to 1. Xbox 360 outsells PS3 roughly 2 to 1.

The price cut for Microsoft seems to have had a positive effect on sales. Not to mention this is one of the biggest months for sales all year being that the Holiday season is upon us. November and December will most likely be bigger.

It's funny, I had money set aside for Little Big Planet. I had it pre-ordered. When it didn't come out, I ended up spending the money on other games. I'm still plenty occupied with the games I bought. I'm still not sure when I'll pick up Little Big Planet. However, I'm very happy with Fable II.

There's nothing wrong with LBP, the only reason why it got shot in the foot so bad was because of the fact that it came out in the middle of a bunch of games, low advertising, and the mother load of them all was the fact that it was DELAYED at launch for another week or two (I can't remember). When I learned I had to wait another 2 weeks for the game I just bought another game and haven't been back yet until I'm done playing these games.

It's kind of sad that it came to this because I really wanted to get on this game, but at the same time I can't afford rockband for $250 and another crapload of 6 games. It's ridiculous.

Why do you keep trying to compare the two games. Fallout 3 doesn't have a bundle coming out soon, LBP does (which might also explain the sales figures, too). LittleBigPlanet came out 2 days before the end of October, and its momentum was admittedly killed by delays, shipping issues, and server problems at launch and I didn't even start seeing commercials for the game during shows like The Daily Show and South Park until the first week of November, so I expect that LittleBigPlanet is a title that will only pique the interest of more non-PS3 owners (read: to influence system sales) on a gradual basis, and obviously not on a zero day basis.

And Resistance 2 didn't come out until November.

Just accept the PS3 is going down in sales and the 360 is beating it. The 360 always has room to drop the prices of the Elite or Pro $50 or $100 if they really were desperate.

Everyone knows that Microsoft always announces things within the same year of release or close. Sony teases them a mile away with trailers.

As a "hardcore" gamer, this whole Wii thing. But they are selling it to people who have never played videogames before- I work at Gamestop and last weekend sold one to a Nursing Home Administrator for the "playroom" at her Nursing Home. The problem is, I PERSONALLY know 3 or 4 people who have Wiis and hardly ever play it-- they got Mario Kart, played for a week, then nothing. Got Wii Fit- worked out for a week, then nothing. The funny thing is, with such HUGE system sales, attach rate is meaningless for the Wii-- if everyone only buys one game for their Wii a year, they are actually still selling as much software as the 360 is at 8 games per system!! The downside-- Sony and MS looking at that while they are designing their next systems....

Only die hard fanboys actually believed LBP would be a system seller. It's come to a point where I don't believe there is a specific title that can boost hardware sales for a console if it doesn't get a price cut. $399 is still expensive for a video games machine these days. I know it has the features that can make it more value than the 360, but the audience Sony wants to tape aren't interested in Wireless Media capabilities or Blu-Ray movies, they want games, cheap and fun. Something Nintendo has mastered this generation and Microsoft attempting to emulate with hefty price cuts. I'm sure Jack Tretton is aware of this, Sony executives know how to run a successful business and they know what's hurting them. However, the finances of the system gives them no choice but to try and direct themselves for a profit over hardware unit sales.

But eventually the price will be cut. I just hope its a big one. Don't forget, there are still tens of millions of PS2 owners who haven't yet upgraded and it's been three years since the birth of this generation. Plenty of time left to go, but the year of the PS3? No way. I called it in March.

But I have to ask Meus, just as you think there is no single game that will sell a system (which I agree), don't you believe the term "year of" to be a bit silly and Press Release-ish? I mean, what constitutes a "year of" anyways? It seems both the media and fanboys love to toss around "year of" and "x killer" nonstop without thinking about what it actually means. Is it game quality? Hardware sales? Media face time?

We have 3 successful consoles this generation, all selling consistently, and each one catering somewhat to different demographics. All 3 have had rather strong lineups this year as well. Is it really possible to lable a year the "year of" anything in this current market climate? The era of the PS2's utter domination is long since passed. Can we really ever label anything a dominator (outside of Wii sales, geez) when the 3 consoles are actually duking it out pretty well?

I don't think we'll ever see a "year of" anything this gen. Next year has great lineups for both systems, and I'm sure sales will continue along a similar course. Of course, that won't stop many websites from fishing for hits by creating stories stating that one console is doomed or some other malarky.

I for one believe that it is the continued existance of ps2 support that is keeping the ps3 down. I have been wowed by what that last gen system is capable of. Granted it is the bread and butter for sony but even sony must be thinking about ways to convert those would be ps2 purchasers into ps3 purchasers. Cutting the backward comp in the new sku's is not helping either.

What makes you think that if someone has a ps2, they are a guaranteed ps3 user down the road? What if some of those ps2 gamers have upgraded? Yet, they chose to go the 360 route instead of ps3. For whatever their reasons are it is their reasons. Price...??? Maybe. Game selection...??? Maybe.

There are some really great titles out for the 360 and ps3 and that ps2 gamer is deciding which way they want to go. Sony just made some big to do about gaming in india. Great but they are doing what nintendo did in the nes/snes transition days. They really want people to get with the times but know they cant turn their back on those who still have yet to taste the ps2 generation. Catch 22 if you will.

MS did what they had to do to secure their place in this generation. Even if it meant leaving the last generation butt cold in the snow. A risky move but one that has been played before. Sega did something similar with the launch of the genesis. Master system support all of about died when it came out in the US. It was still greatly popular in europe but they knew they had to move on and really market the genesis in the face of the old nes. People bought into it and supported it even with the snes came out. Nintendo was stuck trying to support two systems which made finances for both divisions a bit tight. Having had to loosen up on their third party licenses didnt help either but it was needed to be done to make the competition more balanced in a fierce industry.

I have said it before. The second generation console of a company is generally their shining moment. Sony has a great run with the PS2 (2nd gen), Sega had a great run with the Genesis/MD (2nd gen), Atari had a great run with the 2600 (2nd gen to the original PONG), Nintendo is having a resurgance with the Wii. I think the SNES was their best (2nd gen) system. MS is having a great run with their 2nd gen system in spite of issues. Will their 3rd gen system be as popular? Maybe...maybe not. Look at all the 3rd release consoles and see how they fared against their 2nd gen siblings and come to the conclusion yourself.

Evidence: LBP came out like 2 days before october ended, and there was confusion about the release date of LBP. I don't see why October should reflect system selling from LBP in such a scenario. In the best case, there's very little evidence to suggest that you're right in implying that LBP is not a system seller. I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying you don't really have enough information to arrive at such conclusion.

Evidence: The problem is that "Year of whatever" is as subjective as it can get. Is there any rigorous definition for what that means? It's as subjective as "AAA" or scores. If anything, your hypothesis fails by having no seriously set goal as you can move the goal post any time by saying "Oh but it wasn't as much as it should have been".

From a gamer standpoint, it is not definitely but most likely the year of the PS3, as it has the two most important exclusive GOTY contenders (MGS4 and LBP) and it also has the two most important multiplatform GOTY contenders (Fallout and GTAIV). Also, the majority of AAA multiplatform games ended up performing better (according to reviews) on PS3 (GTAIV, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout, Dead Space and Mirror's Edge). Blu-ray also won. As I said, this is from a consumer/gamer standpoint.

Let's compare with 360 and Wii. 360 still has RROD, it's still being outsold on a worldwide basis by both of its competitors, and its must have exclusive games arrived barely, while PS3 has had must have exclusives ever since GT5 Prologue arrived, followed by MGS4. That's not to say 360 owners had a bad time, they were busy playing holiday season games and multiplatform games, but there's little PS3 owners missed that 360 owners were playing until Ninja Gaiden arrived, but around then an awesome horror game came out on exclusively on PS3.

Wii had Smash Bros with a horrible online experience and the worst Mario Kart to date. That's not to say they were bad games, but not only is it more of the same Gamecube games and IP, they are underwhelming experiences compared to what Next-gen has to offer. Wii Fit and Wii Music may sell but just like the Wii, novelties with no quality at all. Other titles are Zelda Crossbow and Animal Crossing but again, same old same old, this Zelda is not your typical Zelda, and Animal Crossing is probably the best thing on the Wii this year.

The Wii has outsold both PS3 and 360 combined. Is that the year of the Wii? I mean seriously, the Wii has no merit at all for what it's doing, but by your logic, it is the year of the Wii since it's outselling everything. PS3 has gotten flash support, a faster browser, a faster online store, trophies, and Home will likely arrive soon, 360 is getting NXE and its fair share of exclusive content for multiplatform games and other exclusive titles, the Wii pales in comparison to what other consoles offer.

It might not be the year of the PS3, but it sure as hell is a lot better than last year. IMHO, last year for 360 was better in terms of content and perhaps its year though it was still outsold. The Wii is outselling everything with nothing to offer. I'd have to give Sony props for turning the PS3 around from what it was last year as they of all made the most significant improvement to the state of their console.

Has it occurred to you that the PS3's current '09 line up is likely to be incomplete? There's roughly 6 more Sony Published titles, (meant to be announced at TGS) and the Team Ico Game. Granted, not all will release in '09, but several will, and MS will need to release a lot to compete with the PS3's line up, and expected quality of these games.

Not surprised. It's not news that the 360 has been outselling the ps3 for a few months now. Their is just more excitement coming out in the 360 camp. Fable 2, Gears 2, Left 4 Dead. That is 3 serious games right there. LBP didn't break records like sony fans said it would. I was right all along. LBP looks to be a sales flop. Again like I said time and time again, the 360 has already won this gen. Sony was slowly catching up to the 360's install base but like I said before.... the 360 is just in a better position for a price cut and that will be the deciding factor. Microsoft planned it perfect. Price cut plus 3 AAA titles. Congrats Microsoft. You did it! :)

ms sales look very healthy this early in the holiday season, decision to cut the price did MS good, they certainly needed it.

sony really need to get the production cost down, but i'm sure they know that and that is what they're working towards. the price of blu-ray comming down is a good sign, maybe sony will get that price cut early next year. they do still have a good market share, ps2 psp and ps3 selling more than 400,000 all together.

Microsoft deserves every credit given, they're the muscle behind all the advertising which in actuality is what gets a game "out there" and "known about" and therefore sold. as a ps3 enthusiast and 360 supporter, I find this nintendo phenomena to be awful. Yes they are making money, which is what all companies want. but look at how they are making the money. printing awful games, no depth, no story, just stupid little mini games.

I said it when it was launched and I will say it again, the wii will be the downfall of gaming. We will no longer see people make powerful machines pushing technology to the limits, but playful, dumb little avatars running around throwing frisbees.

The PS3 didn't do well by any means, but LittleBigPlanet and R2 had nothing to do with it. Give me a break guys. LOL! Considering LittleBigPlanet got released so late, it actually sold really well, especially considering the install base. But it was released too late to have any real impact on console sales guys. Expecting the console that costs double its competition to outsell said competition is insane. It was outsold last month by 115K. Is a 66k increase THAT impressive when the Wii grew over 200k?

The Xbox 360 Elite costs $399. The PS3 costs $399. A Pro is $299 and the Arcade is $199. What are the precentage of sales for each SKU? I am asuming you feel the Arcade is the only SKU that is selling since you believe it costs half. I would imagine the Pro is the big seller with Arcade and Elite splitting the rest of sales.

I think it's a safe bet to say most of the 360s sold were Arcades (especially when you consider the 20GB HDD for $20 program). I would be interested in seeing the breakout of consoles, but ultimately, outsold is outsold. I just don't think it is enough to be concerned with for Sony or the PS3. All Sony cares about is YTD growth, period. And with it being 56% higher than Oct. 2007 and PS3 software sales being 200% higher than Oct. 2007, I just don't see anyone at SCEA being upset.

This is what you guys aren't getting, if LBP is a "casual" game, then people will not buy a PS3 at "hardcore" prices to play it. That isn't the way the market works. Casual gamers buy when the hardware hit's the magic $199 price point. Once that occurs it is possible to release a "casual" game that sells hardware. You won't see causal or mass market cnsumers jump to $399 prices for one game. It won't happen. LBP is still a harcore game only because hardcore gamers are the only ones that can play it.

Microsoft with it's $199 Arcade SKU, NXE, and diverse library is just now shifting focus towards these casual gamers. They've captured their previous market of 24 million users and now need to grow. This is how Sony has been successful the last two generations. Capture the hardcore, lower retail prices as manufacturing costs decline and shift focus to mass market gamers while keeping your hardcore userbase happy.

Sony has a tough road ahead with the economy getting worse every day. They launched much too high which is making it take much longer to broaden their marketshare with pricing. Sony has already agressively lowered their prices, now they have to wait. If you have seen my previous posts, I still believe Sony will pull the plug on the PS3 sooner rather than later. The best strategy for them now is to release a slightly enhanced PS3 as the PS4 when the next Xbox ships. By ;aunching at the same time and at a more agressive price Sony can win back market share that they are losing daily. I predict a fully compatable Cell based PS4 with Blu-Ray for $299 in as little as two years, maybe three.

They only thing to win back that market is a product which can make a profit at a (hypothetical) $100 price. No PS3 or PS4 will ever do that.

This time is over. Next gen tech will not scale ever below that mark. Not with any HDD built in, not with GB RAM, or any thing else.

So, you can choose. Casual entry level in the range of $100-200 or hi def "pro" gaming above. And that's where its heading.

MS can sell whatever they want. What does it help if you can't full use the potential of the machine because 70% of all sold units all of a sudden don't have an HDD. The only thing that means, is, the whole 360 business will shift down at times (see NXE). But who cares as long as you'll get things like Gears. I even doubt, that MS makes a profit since the price cut. They just want to see the numbers and are biting the bullet for now. They have about 6 month, I guess. And I predict, it won't be enough to keep the lead in the long run (2009/2010+).

That, IMO, Sony is looking at the big picture. As in overall. As in, "Holy crap, people are still buying the PS2?!" Sure, production costs for the PS3 currently can't sustain a price cut, but can you imagine after so many years on the market the production costs of a PS2? $10? In the big picture, Sony is not worried to the point of pushing out a PS4 in 2-5 years, because the PS2 is still going strong, which is helping Sony as a business overall. The future, again IMO, for Sony is not as bleak as you are predicting. With strong sales of the PS2 still going on, my prediction is in less than 2 years, we will see the end of PS2 production, and the return of a backwards compatible PS3 that costs even less to produce with more effective/efficient CPU/GPU/Memory at a very aggressive price. Again, IMO.

The PS2 started strong and stayted strong. They still make PS2's because people still buy PS2's. If people stopped buying PS2's tomorrow, Sony waould stop making them. With the PS3 not making enough to sustain business, Sony needs the PS2 to make up the differance. Once the PS2 demand stops, the PS3 will need to pick up the slack. If something does not change to increase sales and demand, the PS3 will need help. The only option would be to re-image the brand. That is why I can easily see a slightly upgraded relaunch of the PS3 as the PS4. By the time this happens manufacturing will already take them close to or below the $299 mark that has been successful in the past. By keeping the existing architecture and simply adding more memory and increasing bus speeds, they could do it. Developers would already be comfortable with Cell and Blu-Ray which would make the launch go very well.

Another reason this makes sense is the fact Microsoft may launch another console in two to three years. Typically we see console generations last 5 years. The Playstation launched in 1995, the PS2 in 2000 and the PS3 would have made it sooner had there not been delays. Instead we seen the Xbox 360 launch in 2005 alone. Sony will not make that mistake again. The money they would save in R&D alone would be huge by adopting this plan. Half way through this console cycle they are still in last place. If they sold Wii-like amounts monthly, the PS3 could last 10 years. At the rate they are going though, it doesn't make sense financially. As it is they have stripped down the hardware and lowered the retail price to the point profitability is close to non-existant. They can't keep lowering the price to remain competative without cutting into profits further.

I do not believe so (PS4 vs. PS3). First, a new product was never introduced on the price level of the previous model. This will certainly not happen with an expanded model just to "realign" the brand. Cost is what's the factor. A PS4 with more features cannot be sold for the same price without reducing some things on the other hand. The HDD comes to mind here. But, Sony's whole business model is built around PSN now. No way to reduce costs even further. Adding more ram won't help either. No matter what. I fail to see, what a slightly improved PS4 would bring new to the table which will address the flaws the current PS3 market supposedly has right now.

I OTHO believe, there will always be a $100 market. No matter what the product will be. People need a low level entry model to get into gaming. I would rather predict, Sony would drop the PS3 in favor of a PS4, but will never replace the PS2. They could share some costs with the PS2 at some point and bring the price of the high end model down, but then, it would also put too much pressure on the low end model - and would require R&D effort to redesign the PS2 to some extend (probably not worth it). Sony doesn't even need developers for the PS2 any more - so many games are still available today and the coming years. That's a cash cow. Dripping, but still. But, this leads to a dilemma.

A new PS - lets not call it PS4, just say an entry level - which is a follow up or/and redesigned PS3 but cheap enough to hit <$200 could be possible. But it won't be the next ueber PS3+. It will rather be a downscaled version. But I am not sure if they'll do this either. Sony might loose on the "top end" image they created with the PS3 now. And some people might get angry. To high are the expectations.

Whatever comes, I think Sony is not in a bad shape. The solution to their problem is already there. Diversity. They have 3 products on the market and overall they sell better then MS. What else do you want? Absolute console domination ? What for ? Most games come for PS360, and more HQ PS3 exclusives. Halo and Gears will never run on the PS3 (any PS), but what else would someone die for if not been ported over ?

The 360s price advantage will fade away, as soon as the PS3 will hit the <$300 mark, and possibly could even go down further depending if a HDD will ever be available for a reasonable (strike that - a$$ cheap) price. They could simply sell a bare bone model w/o HDD, but let the customer choose, instead. Won't change a thing, eventually. Except you could get a 320GB model for $400 bucks. But would allow them to market it as "Now available for $$$" (and not to mention its worthless w/o HDD). But people will figure this out anyhow.

We are barely at the 2 year mark for the PS3. They still are making a profit overall. Let's reconvene in 2010 (4 years after launch) to see what happens. Will they be under development of a PS4? Or a scaled down PS3? Or, maybe, all 3 consoles will be pretty much even when it comes to sales. Only time will tell. Sony did well with the PS and PS2. It would silly to assume they will fail to compete in sales with the PS3, based one regions sale numbers for a month.

To take a games sales into account for a particular month, said game would need to have been on the market for the majority of that month. LBP was out for the last few days of October. Sales will not reflect properly. Just like when a price drop is put into effect at the last quarter of a month. You can't get an accurate account of what effect that price drop has done until the next full month.

November numbers will be what you need to look at for LBP, Resistance 2, gears 2 and any other game released between the end of October to the first half of november. Any game released in the second half of november should not be counted fully until the next full month of distribution.

I can honestly say there will be 1 more sale on the Wii numbers for the month of November. Picked up one for friend for their kids for xmas.

you got to go back to the days when EGM first came to the stands. Those were the roaring days of the NES and genesis (and later snes). Reviews of games and handing out numbers reflecting if it was good or not. It wasnt so much the review. It was the number and how it ranked. the mindset of people then (and now to some extent) is the higher the better. But most dont take into account if it really is for them. Madden games have gotten rave reviews in the past but I dont care for sports games so the score does nothing for me.

I think now with the internet and all that things like you mentioned are only the beginning. What will be the next way to gauge if something is good or not. It sure isnt personal choice anymore.

I agree with all of you, and share your sentiments. The answer is simple though... the internet. Fanboys are able to get information easily, and post without fear of reprisals behind their safe and cozy monitors. Game "journalism" shares just as much of the blame. Their reviews are self claimed to be "the definitive facts" instead of opinions.

I miss the days when it was about Sonic running faster than Mario, arguing face to face in the lunchroom. Now, as you said, everyone is an armchair economist. What gets me the most, however, is how little gamers seem to care about the games themselves. Games are hyped to high heaven, come out, and then IMMEDIATELY its on to hyping the next big thing. It's just... blah.

I don't hear about how awesome it is to use the Hammer of Dawn. Instead I hear about how Gears 2 "crushed the sales of the competition in October by 200%." And it's not even in relation to the industry, and how thats good for gaming. No, its a headline meant to say "nyah nyah my game is better since it sold more, yours automatically sucks." It's all numbers now. It's no longer about fun or awesome moments. It's stats and numbers and on to the next big hype train.

And what pains me the most is that these sorry excuses for gamers are so immature, they have NO idea what its like to dedicate 90 - 100 + hours a week on these games. To pour blood, sweat, and tears into an industry that is meant as a hobby and for fun. NO one seems to remember the FUN part any more sadly. I despise this generation of "gamers" and their entire mentality frankly. It disappoints me, that you guys seem to be some of the precious few who just understand how low gaming has fallen.

Sales of the PS3 are up 90% this year, year over year sales for October are up over 50%. How did the 360 fare? Oh, a -37% drop in sales from September last year, -35% drop for October with the price drop. It certainly looks like the 360 is winding down in terms of sales and the general exclusive lineup for 2008/2009. I'm most happy about socom in the month of October. Phisical sales show it was in the top ten listed at number 7 & it didnt include psn downloads. Sony is pretty sneaky. Just like the LBP sales that confused everyone trying to count only 3 days of sales & releasing resistance2 big in November.

You seem a bit confused. Let me see if I can help. The only momentum (I think you meant momentum) we're seeing from the 360 is downward momentum. Look at September - 360 sales down -37% year over year, now October...yeah they've picked things up a bit but sales are still down -35% over October of last year. How do you consider this a good thing? Just because they beat the PS3 2 out of 10 months so far this year worldwide. The PS3 has still sold over 1.1 million consoles more than the 360, but you go ahead and try to convince yourself that the 360 isn't winding down before it's replacement is due.

But 360 hardware sales weren't really up on the Halo release. They managed about 550,000 in September...Halo 3 release Sept 27th (or abouts) so it didn't get rolling until October and - guess what? Sales for Oct of 2007 where still just over 550,000. If you look at the sales charts, it's price cuts that ramp up console sales. AAA releases hardly create even a sales blip. It's minor compared to the impact of price cuts - as we see from Sept to Oct 07 console sales for the 360. But this price cut for the 360 still hasn't managed to spark sales compared to what the 360 was selling last year at this time. That's why MS would have cut the price in the first place. They can't be happy with these numbers.

I know both consoles have great games, and my PS3 has given me as much enjoyment time as my 360 has. I just can't stand fanboys that get the best out of me. The reason I was talking about "power" is because I saw the other day this fanboy post FUD on one thread saying how he isn't a fanboy and that he enjoy's all consoles but that his FUD was the truth, and afterwards we see him stealth trolling with stupid posts like these.

Anyway, you can say what you want about Gears 2 looking better than those games I mentioned but the truth is that Uncharted has between 20,000 and 30,000 polygons per character while Gears only has half of that. Uncharted has more realistic textures and doesn't need to cover their characters in as much armor. You did know that is a limitation of the Unreal Engine, right? That's why Lost Odyssey (great game, BTW) has characters whose skin looks like plastic. Only Kaim looks great but the rest don't look as good.

Going even further with Uncharted, the world is a lot more colourful than the one you see in Gears, lighting is better, animation is way better... I mean seriously, there's nothing like that game on 360, at least not yet. You'd think that 360s best game would look better considering it has been in more development time not to mention it has an easier architecture for making games.

I enjoy all my consoles as much including my PS3, but those that deny what the PS3 is capable off and that it is a great games machine are either in denial, fanboys or both. I also enjoy my 360 a lot even when it has given me hard times with its failure rate.

I've got to admit that I was looking forward to seeing how the NPD numbers looked as we start to move into the holidays. The Wii is just walking away. Everybody complains that it has no games or is for kids or whatever, but people are still buying them as fast as Nintendo can make them. That says a lot about what the average person thinks about video games. The Wii is making gaming accessible to people that traditionally don't play games. So much more than the 360 and PS3. Sure, the high powered consoles are our favorites. But shifting nearly a million Wii's in North America in October is HUGE.

The 360 numbers really don't surprise me. Dropping the price absolutely caused 360 sales to increase and the level will likely be sustained through the Holidays. I'm sure people will disagree just because they have their favorite console. I'm sure that the PS3 is going to sell well as well, but it would sell better at a lower price.

that's a REALLY tough choice.

in fact, i traded in a bunch of games i really didn't want to trade in in order to get my OWN copy of LBP and Fallout 3. i HAD to have them both, but not everybody can buy all the games they wanted.

i traded in a bunch more games to get Fable 2 and Resistance 2 (i actually traded in Fable 2 FOR Resistance 2, truth told; Fable 2 was fun, but the beta of R2 sold me completely, and i figured i'd get more playtime from R2 than Fable 2. i was already at the end of Fable 2 after about 15 hours of play. i'll pick it up again eventually, though).

those are some high profile releases though, jockeying for your money.

also, taking into account the European and Japanese sales of LBP, it's doing pretty good for a game that's been out less than 3 weeks.

also look at what LBP is; at it's heart, it's a family oriented game. no matter what marketing tactic Sony used, those cute, cuddly little Sackboys and Sackgirls scream ONE THING to gamers, and parents: "that would be PERFECT to pick up for my son/daughter/little brother/little sister/niece/nephew, etc for Christmas."

i guarantee the sales of LBP will increase during the holiday season. while most hardcore gamers KNOW that LBP is a deceptive game, in that it's adorable, but the platforming is BRUTAL, most casual gamers and parents don't know that, and only judge the game based off of the commercials (and i HAVE seen plenty of commercials concerning LBP).

anyway, let the fanboys gloat or whine on this date. NPD is good, but it's not WW sales.

the 360's sales AREN'T surprising to anyone because the price drop was finally in effect for a full month.

of course, Sony may HAVE to respond in some way, which means a PS3 price cut by the time holiday season kicks in after Thanksgiving.

Sony makes TV's. Both hi-end and low end tv's. Just because the lower range tv's sell more than the Hi-end tv's doesn't mean that Sony has to drop the price of the Hi-End to stay competitive. They're different markets and Sony has their bases covered. So ask yourself this question: The 360 has moved 6.7 million consoles so far this year. Sony has sold just shy of 7.9 million PS3's, about 6 million PS2's and approaching 10 million PSP's going into the holiday season. Do you really think Sony needs to adjust their pricing strategy at this point to counter the "threat" of the 360? No doubt that they'd sell more PS3's if they dropped the price - but I really don't see that as a priority. If people want a cheap console - there are still plenty of titles being released on the PS2. Sony still gets paid.

That didn't impact their sales at all. The still sold almost the same amount of units in Sept of 07 as they did in Oct of 07, roughly 550,000 units in the US. For both Sept and Oct of 2008, with the price cut the 360 only sold 343,000 and 371,000 units. So year over year numbers 360 sales dropped about 37% in September, 35% in October. Again, you've got to be pretty deluded to be cheering this little nugget. Internally, you know MS can't be happy about these numbers.

Am I missing something? Why do people keep excusing the 360's better numbers on the price cut like it is a bad thing? It is common sense that price cuts will do good things. That is why MS is in a great position this gen. I am not saying the 360 is better, but it will always be cheaper. Cheaper is normally enough, but in this economic climate, price will be evrything.

First and foremost Sony as a whole are doing pretty well. PS2 which is Sony's cash cow is still generating alot of sales, an asset Microsoft doesn't own to generate profit. And the PSP although suffering from very little quality releases recently sells ok. PS3 sales are growing year over year for the month so nothing to start worrying about yet even though it's been outsold over 2 to 1 by the 360.

I'm not even going to talk about nintendo, this phenomenon is beyond me and beyond any explanation. So many great games released on PS3 and 360 in the past couple months and NOTHING on the Wii, still it outsells the 360 over 2 to 1 and the PS3 4 to 1.

About Microsoft, the price cut definitely had a little something to do with this sudden burst for the 360. The problem is that Microsoft's strategy is too much focused on beating Sony. This is costing them alot of money. First they want to release the console first, what happened? RROD. Next they pay to make third party Sony exclusives become multiplatform games. After that they pay more money to have timed exclusivity and exclusive DLC. 50 million for GTA 4 DLC that won't see the light of day until late this year or in 2009 is money in the trash. Advertising campaigns that costs millions of dollars to make sure that the big games will get the hype they wish to generate. Finally price cuts like the last one they did seriously reduces margins of profits.

They had no choice but to go all in to beat Sony because the 360 is Microsoft's only asset in console gaming, and still even with all that money spent, PS3 is outselling the 360 in worldwide sales for 2008.

I don't want to make it sound like Sony doesn't spend money either, I mean Sony invests ALOT of money in their first party studios, and last time I checked, they have more studios than their competition combined. The difference is that these studios create games that generate profit for the most part!!! One big disadvantage for Sony in terms of revenue vs Microsoft is the online aspect. Charging nothing for an online service that somewhat compares to what Microsoft charges 50$ for is a big cost. Finally Sony does invest in multi-million advertising campaings but they clearly invest less than Microsoft at least in North-America. I can't say for other parts of the world.

I might sound like a complete Sony fanboy right now but I'm just trying to analyze Microsoft's efforts to beat Sony and see if it's worth it. My ultimate question is, how much does it cost Microsoft and Sony for every dollar generated. Overall it sure looks like Microsoft is throwing alot more money than Sony to generate revenue but again I could be wrong...

The problem for Sony is the BR player...because of that sucker they CANT lower prices (remember, even at $500-$600 PS3 was selling at a loss) and it continues to sell at a loss. The whole point was to move the BR format forward with the PS3...not so good of a choice. BR sales havent been outright terrible, but they still arent even putting a dent on DVD sales, with forecasts for this year already being slashed (just type Blu-Ray into google news).

Think about this....a system that comes with a HD, Blu-Ray, free online, and Wi-Fi hasnt been able to keep up with its main rival, the 360. Especially in SW sales where they make their money...360 has an insane tie ratio of nearly 10...unheard of, even in PS2s hey day. That number tells the real story...coupled with millions who subsccribe to LIVE.

There is still time for different things to happen, but considering that a new Xbox will probably surface in 3 years or so, they gotta hustle...

Nintendo is aiming at a totally different croud than Sony and Microsoft.

First of all LBP is a hardcore game with a casual presentation, let's get that straight right away. Also it's obvious that Microsoft and Sony are going to release games and features aiming more towards a casual audience, just like Nintendo is going to release games aiming more towards a hardcore audience. But there is no doubt that Nintendo's strategy this generation was to completely detach themselves from Sony and Microsoft.

Where I agree with you is that Nintendo is definitely leading the pack and by a lot. I was part of the people saying that the Wii would not survive this generation, but hey I guess I was wrong.

It does get very hard when you try to get all the hidden stuff and go everywhere. But lets be honest, its aimed at the casual crowd for sure. Yes MS and Sony are going to release casual games, and yes they do that because they want part of the Wii's pie. The thing I have to disagree on is that, yes MS and Sony wanted to advance gaming, they want to make money and if they would of had any idea that the profit the Wii was going to make, they would of made a Wii. I like to think that they care about us "hardcore" gamers, but they don't, they care about dollar signs, that's all. The 360 and PS3 can't just come right out and make a completely casual system because they would loose the supporters they have now, and they cannot afford that.

I have both systems and I feel that I haven't gotten the value out of my Ps3. I have the 60 gig launch system. I mean you fanboys scream wait until this comes out and that comes out you will see, you will see. I mean your fanboys probably represent less the 10 percent of Ps3 owners. We all knew that LBP wasn't going to be a system seller just like Banjo 3 isn't going to move systems. But it seems that Sony was putting everything behind LBP. I mean now that it is obvious that LBP and R2 are not going to be as big as you all thought now you are putting your hopes on Killzone 2. The 360 is the system of choice despite RROD, despite 50.00 for Live, despite not having blu-ray, despite not having built in wi-fi, despite not having hard drives in every system and it is just eating you guys up. If Sony would have just put a DVD drive in the system they would probably have dominated this generation. They took a big gamble and they lost. haven't heard anything about Home in about 6 weeks. You fanboys have been real quiet. I guess it won't be out this year after all. You guys love to talk about worldwide sales but last time I checked we are in the United States. And one more thing, just because something is a Ps3 exclusive that doesn't mean that it is a AAA title or that it is the best thing since sliced bread. Sony can produce the best games in the world but it doesn't matter when a large percentage of your customers actually bought the system to watch movies. I mean LBP, Killzone 2, R2 are and will probably (KZ2) be decent games (I didn't care for R2 too much) but these games are not selling that well and I can't believe it is because they suck. I think that the bigger picture concern is that as long as Sony offers the PS2 as a viable alternative to the PS3 we're going to see current generation adoption suffer. The PS3 has done remarkably well, but it hasn't sold as well as the PS2 in the same timeframe. With Sony taking steps to ensure that the PS2 remains viable (by removing BC from PS3's and still producing new PS2 games) it's going to continue to eat into current generation sales.

HDD to play GOW2? Wrong. Sorry, but you do not need it to play 99% of the 360 games. There are some free maps to download for GOW2, but those are not needed to play online. You would simply not have those extra maps for multiplayer. I have an arcade and I can play 47 of my 360 games no problem.

Sony does need profitability though... In many cases gaming is similar to news papers as far as getting profit from them.

With news papers they practice lower cost higher profit, this is because the lower the cost of the paper the more people will pick it up as these papers seem to have given in to a concept that they can only report news in one way and that way is in direct competition with any rival news papers. The point is then to get as many reads as possible to recieve as much attention as possible to thier paper, this in turn attracts advertizers which is where they make profit.

With gaming there are no advertizers so Sony can't lower the price on the PS3 in a hope to make profit, but in the past they did lower the price within ratio to make a profit off of something that is similar to advertisements; software, however Kazz must feel secure enough in thier install base not being ignored that the no price cut thing was acted on.

I just think EA has some bad luck, they always make these major changes on infastructure only to have it slap them back in the face with wet fish. Now if they make thier games for the PS3 first it will look better on the PS3 and worse on the Xbox 360 then they will generate a stigma with more losses impending than the lack of establishment with the Wii's install base.

To put it plainly, The big 10 3rd parties don't seem too sure of themselves, they seemed to have lost touch with Nintendo's core audience and are split with ramification of high development costs low returns kicking in from thier 2007 expedenture. Guess they could go out of business... but the handhelds are saving some of them.

Cant afford to do that. Their overestimated demand for the console. They seriously thought millions were going to line up day one to buy the PS3 regardless. Even said that once too. We'll work extra hours and buy it no matter what simple because it was a Playstation. Yeah they were wrong and now they are stuck. Sony did everything they could this gen to screw over gamers. Regardless of what fanboys will say Blu Ray hurts PS3 more than it helps it from a gaming standpoint. Sony just didnt care if it hur the games as long as they got their movie format through. 1) 360 is the WW champ (besides Wii), but more importantly the US champ...the biggest market for vid games. Slice it, dice it, spin it all u want, but youre just in denial if u argue otherwise.

2) If u can say its because of the price cut, then it could also be said that sales slowed down b4 that in anticipation of a price cut.

3) Even when the PS3 outsold the 360, it was always by the slimmest of margins (show me ONE MONTH where the margin was more than 10%) an thats not gonna catch them up. And now there are being outsold again...2:1.

4) November may shape up to be even worse for Sony with Gears 2, possibly the biggest game of the year...remember when u see those Gears sales thats only for ONE console.

Before that, I had only ever owned Nintendo consoles. I went with PS3 over Xbox 360 for 2 reasons: Built in blu-ray (cuz I knew I was going to get HD eventually, which I since have) and RROD.

Now that I've had a chance to experience PS games, I went ahead and got a PS2 (even though I have a 60GB PS3) and have amassed a nice library of used PS2 games. My PS3 library is growing (and so is my kid's Wii library).

There are going to be some great Black Friday deals on PS3 bundles too.
