Japan Watch: Xbox 360 Outsells PS3 As Sony Records Lowest weekly Sales Ever

The latest Media Create hardware sales data from Japan has been released and shows that not only is Microsoft's Xbox 360 continuing to outsell rival Sony's PS3, but it's actually starting to have a negative affect on Sony's highly treasured sysytem. This week Xbox 360 managed to sell 8,271 units, whilst Sony's PS3 managed just 7,232 units......Sony's lowest recorded sales ever, since the launch of the PlayStation 3.

Actually in times of economic turbulence, people tend to spend money on local entertainment rather than go on vacation or other such things.

This is the reason that Hollywood fared so well in the 1930's. People couldn't afford to go on vacation but they could afford to go see movies.

Right now the cost of fuel is quite high. The economy is unstable. People will seek local entertainment more readily. This is one of the reasons why up until now the games market has been relatively stable. People would rather invest a bit of cash on a console and be able to spend a semi reasonable amount of money on a video game than spend the amount of money required to travel somewhere else and then have to pay money to stay in a hotel or whatnot.

The Wii, which until a few weeks ago, was the most cost effective console has seen the best sales. Now that the Xbox 360 is less costly, it's also seeing the boost in sales. It's not trumping the Wii by any amount, but it is doing better.

I have all three consoles Wii, 360 and PS3.

I have decided not to pay any attention to sales numbers and pay attention to the games the system is pushing out.

The WII... It has outsold all other systems. SO WHAY? I havent purchased a game on it since Zelda...

The 360... Cut their price down to dangerously low levels. So people are buying more. The exlusives dont match up to PS3. I want the best games for each generation and PS3 is the system that has the best. My time is precious. So even if it outsells PS3 10 to 1. I will still buy the PS3 exclusives as they are worth my time.

The PS3... So sales are low.... It will pickup when HOME, RFOM2, LBP, SOCOM, MS2, KZ2 roll out.

As my time is precious, I dont focus on sales of units to determine which system I will play or games I will buy for. I only focus on the quality of games. I spend my free time playing games like MGSIV, Drakes, Warhawk, and soon LBP, SOCOM, RFOM2, MS2, etc.

The real news here is that the ps3 numbers are so low that you cant even count japan in worldwide sales anymore. Japan was supposed to be a Sony lifejacket. Now when you look at worldwide numbers as fanboys have been throwing around for months they fly back and hit you smack in the face. Not that it really matters but it looks like Wii #1 xbox #2 and PS3 #3. It is sad as I am just now starting to really appreciate my PS3 but I think it is something you have to own to really understand. It may be poor marketing or high price (despite high value)but something isn't getting through to consumers. the economy certainly doesnt bode well for PS3. People will forego the caviar go to the Cambells soup of consoles which at the moment is the xbox.

In Juuken's defense, let me point something out to you:

60 Gig Xbox 360 in Japan costs 29,800 yen
40 Gig PS3 in Japan costs 39,980 yen

So the 360 made Microsoft 246,475,800 yen
The PS3 made Sony 289,135,360 yen (Give or take for both of these because I am using one model)...on the PS3 alone...

Adding the PSP (19,800 yen) and PS2 (16,000 yen) you come out to a grand total offff.....

942,714,360 yen that Playstation made Sony. That is 696,238,560 more yen than Microsoft made in Japan. Or $6,984,035.63 USD more than Microsoft made in Japan. Wow, Microsoft sure is giving Sony a run for their money aren't they...

I am merely pointing out that Sony is fairing fine in Japan and that, like people have stated numerous times, 1000 more consoles is not as big of a deal as people like to think it is. The 360 just had a recent JRPG release last month, so it's not that surprising, but the 360's numbers have fallen a lot considering the amount of JRPG's already on the system.

The PS3 had no release of a JRPG from SquareEnix last month like the 360 did and the PS3 didn't have a price cut and was still just about a thousand units behind the 360 this week in Japan.

The 360 outselling the PS3 in Japan by a few thousand units is a nice effort on Microsoft's part, but sadly it's not enough. If the 360 has had all these JRPG's over the years and haven't managed to sell a million yet in Japan, it's just a lost cause for the 360 over there. White Knight Chronicles in December, Final Fantasy Advent Children PS3 bundles in March 2009 will pick up the slack SUBSTANTIALLY.

You also forget that the 360 has some pretty good, critically acclaimed western games like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo, and Fable that could very easily catch on in Japan as the 360 console base gets bigger. And don't give me bs about Japan not liking shooters, MGS4 is nothing more than a 3rd person shooter with some stealth elements and it was popular in Japan due to the popularity of its earlier incarnations on the popular PS2.

As far as I can see, Microsoft has no where to go but up in the land of the rising sun. Feel free to click on the disagree tab below this comment. I've been saying that the X360 would see a big increase in sales worldwide for the last 6 months and still don't expect any Sony fanboys to agree with me...yet. I never said MGS4 was crappy. It's obviously a good game from what the critics say. I was just refuting the common argument that Japan doesn't like to play shooters when, in fact, shooters like MGS4 have been popular in Japan. All the "good" games you mentioned WERE cool when I was in grade school. The fact is that I've grown up and Nintendo's games haven't. That's why the moms & pops want to buy the Wii for their kids. From a population viewpoint, the number of people that have kids far outweighs the number of geeky/dorks/nerds (as I'm one of these), in their late teens through twenties. And not just that, look the PS2 outsold the PS3, I remember this kind of charts when the PS3 just came out at the end of 2006 and early 2007 when they werent too much good release on the PS3 and still great titles coming out for the PS2.

We are back to those days now!

Come one SONY everyone in Japan want those damn JRPG, why do you think they are so desperate to buy the 360 with all those RROD and from an American company??? If all those title were avalaible on the PS3 right now (and not like more than half year later, like for example Eternal Sonata or Last Remnant) the situation will be quite different.

Several suggestions :

- PRICE CUT! This is a short term solution and will just increase sales for a while
- BRING out JRPG, either bring one of those JRPG developer into Sony Studios (become first party). Maybe buying Atlus? Getting Square Enix will be great but dont think they can afford it. Ahhh imagine if they can get one of those JRPG developer and then let them concentrate exclusively for the PSP, PS3!

And stop letting those exlusive go away like I just saw last night with Tekken 6! This is crap, we have to wait another full year for it due to going to the 360. Geeez it is already running on Namco arcade board that are custom PS3 board!!! WTH

But were talking Japan here. This is the place the xbox couldn't be given away. Here in England a ps3 with Fifa 09 is £309.99, the same multi-format game comes with the 360 for £179.99. It's a big difference in the credit crunch, and i think i know what parents will be buying this xmas. God it's even cheaper than the wii. Say what you want, but it's a bargain and as most multi-fomats are near on identical , why pay more.

Both PS3 and Xbox360 are huge in size console and they need a lot space since they need ventilation to not overheat while Wii is really small and can be fit in any small space without the risk of overheating.

I think that is one of the main reasons why Both Sony and MS consoles are not selling well in Japan.
And to make it worst the PS3 is more expensive and have less RPGs then the other systems.

Can you provide a link to state this the original Xbox lost 3-4 billion and with the 1.5 billion added on from RROD i don't think the 360 by it self is turning a profit.

The Sony conference hasn t happen yet that was the business conference the 11 announced games will be announced at a later showing as far as losing those franchises is all about business and money and it seems that's all M$ know how to do is get 3rd party games to go multiplatform and spend 50 million on worthless DLC that no one will buy when it comes out instead spend all the money you waste on DLC and maybe secure 1 or 2 1st party exclusive games

Why should sony drop the price on the PS3? They still have the PS2 and PSP! lol they could undercut both the 360 and Wii. Imagine if they cut the price of the PS2 to $99 and with their current library and the new games being released for it (yes games are still being released for it e.g Madden, Force Unleashed) it's the best alternative for a failing economy! I really think they should concentrate on the PS2 and release a new bundle at a $99 price point. I wouldn't mind one under the tree...
