CVG writes: A developer behind the game at the centre of a plagiarism row has said that the title was their entire creation. The allegations of plagiarism started when a writer noticed similarities between the title and Oblivion. Since then, gamers have found hundreds of other instances that seem all-too familiar. Comparisons have been made to Thief 3, UT2004, WoW, Vampire: Bloodlines and even Crysis.
WC: Even some of the best video games have been called out for lifting elements from earlier games, but there’s a difference between borrowing or paying homage to something, and shamelessly pilfering from it, as all the below games demonstrate with a clear certainty. Though not all the games on this list are bad – though a fair few of them are – the air of plagiarism hanging over each, whether it’s an authorised copy or not, certainly dents each game’s reputation, even if two in particular are without doubt regarded as classics.
Here are 10 games that are, for whatever reason, and regardless of their quality, shameless rip-offs in the extreme.
If you really wanna get technical, all games post 80's is some sort of rip off or "copycat" regardless of how different stories, characters, settings, etc are.
However I do agree there's some that you can tell there was 0 "difference" with some games.
And for the naysayers "Well what about Wolfenstein 3D, that started FPS" no it didn't; it was the first mainstreamed but there's an 80's game (Forgot game exactly) that was an arcade fps that was either ported to pc or it never hit home console.
It's pretty simple. Go to the + next to the website's name. Then, click "WTF?" and "No".
I'm not sure why N4G has this glitch, but it's happened to me plenty of times. I hope they sort it out soon.
Knock-offs. Homages. Clones. Copycats. Rip-offs. Call them what you will, but it’s no great secret that developers have been riding on the coattails of proven success stories since the dawn of gaming. Here’s the top 10 most brazen rip-offs of classic games.
I was agreeing with this list until I seen number 1. Saints Row is not a rip off of GTA. Only GTA fanboys and those who haven't played Saints Row think it is.
Using this site's logic, every FPS available today is a rip off of Wolfenstein 3D. Just because they are in the same Genre does not mean a game is a rip off of another. It's stupid logic to think so.
RPS - "With Tim Schafer and Markus Persson now in talks over the possibility of a Psychonauts 2, it gets us to wondering what other games we’d like to see Notch’s millions spent making happen. Notch reports that he and Tim will likely meet at next month’s GDC, but also stresses that people shouldn’t yet get their hopes up. Too late! But were it not to happen, to which game should those spare riches be directed? We’ve made Notch’s mind up for him."
Oh please, gamers will make a big deal out of everything. It's a damn game! As I said before, do you know how many damn nes rpg's and Snes rpg's all looked the same? They all used the same pixles and sprites for their layouts. Hell, alundra and Suikoden used a lot of eachothers items and sounds. Konami and DD have nothing in common.
It's like me drawing a map to what I think the constilations in the sky are opposed to what they really are. You can draw conclusions all over the map and point out things you think are similar all you want. Truth is, you don't know.
High Tension was a complete rip of of Intesity. I mean huge! You don't see Dean Koontz suing anyone. Saw is a complete and total rip off of Torso. George Romero stole the idea for Night of the Living dead from Rod Serling.
See where this is going? just shut up and let the man make his game and make a living.
Spider-man
Honestly..
....and i'm Napoleon.
the most amazing part is taking so many pieces from so many good games ,e ven if they dont all fit together , and yet so amazingly fails and do worse than if they did their own thing .
