Eurogamer: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Review

Eurogamer writes,

"Metal Gear Solid has always been a love it or hate it proposition. Millions love it for its involved, conspiratorial plotting, its arch sense of humour, its demanding stealth gameplay, its sprawling cinematic ambition, its preposterous stylishness and pretensions toward artistic weight. Millions hate it for exactly the same reasons.

Then there are those - this reviewer included - for whom Metal Gear Solid is a love it and hate it proposition. Flawed, intractable, unspeakably tedious at times, and yet blessed with incredible production values, imaginative design, and a brilliant, brave willingness to think and do the unexpected and impossible. At times they're barely videogames at all, but they're capable of moments of pure videogame genius, joy and shock that few other series can match."

Come on Len/nasim/20 other accounts, Jenzo was making a joke about how what's-his-name up there spelled "break"

You know....ceramic brakes.....regular brakes....nevermind.

Someone send their server a virus so this garbage doesn't get online.

We shouldn't allow them to tarnish the reputation of gaming's ultimate achievement and the pinnacle of this medium.

pimpstation5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

Eurogayes is the worst site on the internet. This reviewer makes it obvious he has no idea what he's talking about. Where did they find this monkey? This site gives Halo 3 a 10 and MGS4 an 8. That right there proves they cannot utter one true statement or fact on anything gaming related.

Actually, this must be a joke. They're just messing with us. It's the only explanation. Or maybe Microsoft is paying like they never have before.

anh_duong5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

this post is going to to be the hottest post of the week bar none..

Read this eurogamer preview after the played the game for 3 WHOLE DAYS:

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

"And on this occasion, in a heroic effort to draw a line for once and all under Snake's story and give the Metal Gear Solid series the grand finale it deserves, Hideo Kojima and his team really have outdone themselves. 'Extravagant' doesn't cover it. Nor do 'dramatic', 'spectacular', 'sentimental', 'surprising', 'long-winded', 'final', 'painstaking' or 'polished'. Guns of the Patriots is Metal Gear Solid in excelsis." - eurogamer

makes you wonder why the reviewer bothered to preview the game.

InMyOpinion5800d ago

I just pulled your leg 5 mins ago in the IGN MGS4 Review open zone, saying GTA IV is better than MGS4. Something I don't think I'll agree with at all(haven't played MGS4 yet). The fanboy reaction was overwhelming lol!

old comments are just that, old comments

Presentist5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

I don't understand you guys, you haven't played the game, how could you possibly dispute this score?

I mean, I agree that this score sucks, but we'll have to wait until the game comes out to see if we think it deserves higher.

Winter47th5800d ago

Who the **** is this fanboy retard and how did he make it to the review cast ?

OmegaKulu5800d ago

Well, if you look at reviewer's history, he reviewed a bunch of MMOs and mario cart wii... i wont expect much out of him...

LJWooly5800d ago

Don't worry people. I can guarantee you this is probably the lowest score the game's going to get (unless Gamespot outdoes them) and it's only going to affect the metascore by 0.2, I think.

Do we even really need reviews to tell us how good a game like Metal Gear Solid is? I think, personally, anyone with even remote experience of the series would do well to expect great, great things from this game. I can't wait.

Still, nothing's going to stop this becoming the hottest story on this website in a while. Flame-retardent exoskeleton GO!

CrazzyMan5800d ago

"You're sorry to see Snake go. But should you be? Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it. It just burrows deeper into what fans love and detractors hate than ever before, and it will make few converts. It's a crying shame, given how many genuinely classic gaming moments there are here, given the countless exquisite creative touches, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is its own worst enemy. You could not ask for a funnier, cleverer, more ambitious or inspired or over-the-top conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series, but it's definitely time to move on."

AND THEY GAVED 10 TO HALO 3??? MEGA LOL.

Filanime035800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

hey guys if u go to the comment box of the metal gear review u can see a bunch of 360 fanboys enjoying the 8 that the website gave to the series. Hmm by reading those comments the $itches in eurogamer want to please their 360 fanboys readers. U can tell that the majority of their readers are 360 fans I smell conspirancy just like gamespot.:

Here is some of the comments of 360 fanboys on the comment box:

"wow only 8, i know its not low but it was meant to be a perfect game yes? ... PS3 realy isn't worth buying now. I'll stick with my trusty PC and XBox360"

another one:
"Last PS3 great white hope blown out. What's left now to PS3 fanboys? FFXIII?"
"The minute MS announces some kind of Blu-Ray playback facility for the 360, I'm selling my -largely unused- PS3."

OMG I feel sorry for this guys. Stupid pricks doesn't really own a ps3 and pretending that they own one and they will sell it bcoz MSG got an 8 is wat pisses me off oh well. They also bash the cutscene and complicated story as I can already tell that bunch of these 360 fanboys don't get the story or bunch of 8 years old that don't understand much of the story and just hitting their puberty in which halo is the only cool thing. Peace out will buy this game day one.

Skip_Bayless5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

Next time Kojima Productions makes a game they shouldn't even bother sending review copies to Eurogamer. Or they should send the case of the game without the game disc and stick a note that says "HAHA you get nothing".

Eveyone should boycott the site and make them fools go bankrupted.

Potty Scotty5800d ago

Same People that called Ninja Gaiden II a flop for getting an 8.

thewhoopimen5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

I'm starting to believe there is a certain amount of Western review Bias toward any games coming out of Asia. The reviewers preview was showering this title with excelsis. He was in every sense of the word, more emotionally involved in this MGS4 title than in the Halo3 review, and yet at the end, he throws an 8. But this isn't going to be the first or last time it seems. I just saw the IGN Uk review of MGS4, and they give it a 9.9.... I am like wtf? If its so easy to throw a 10 out Halo3 with its flaws and Halo2.5 gameplay, why is it so hard to score a 10 for MGS4? I mean WHAT gives? My own personal answer unfortuanately has come down to western bias... and I don't really like what my perception is leaning me.

chaosatom3335800d ago

not even a xbox fan hates mgs this much.

BattleAxe5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

The reviewer is probably going against the grain to purposely create a controversy so that he and eurogamer get more attention.

How can all the other reviews so far give it a 9.9/10 and 10/10 ect. and this guy comes out with this................palease

foodbox5800d ago

Its a conspiracy!
MS owns Eurgamer!
8/10??1? OMG!1!one! this game is 11/10!!1!

Ridiculous. Pathetic.

you people havent even **PLAYED** the game yet. N4G a home for the utterly clueless sony cheerleader.

The only reviews that have been disclosed thusfar are **EARLY EXCLUSIVE REVIEWS** take a breath you people. Wait until there are 20-30 reviews and then go look at the metacritic score.

If you think 8/10 is the lowest score this game will get, you are wrong. EVERY game gets a variety of scores -- after 20-30 you get an average, then you've got a general idea of "how it scored".

After reading the review, I'm finding that it sound like EG wanted to be generous -- this review sounds like something out of Rolling Stone, overly wordy and too much obvious praise.

I think he let you in on the situation by telling you how ridiculous and convoluted the story is... without saying it "sucked" or it was "pointless" or "too long for no reason" -- which is what he *wanted* to say but couldnt because this is an "exclusive early review".

Relax.

ip-student5800d ago

The game has some great moments but has a lot of flaws that make it less than it could be (when you compare it to other games). The fact that a certain group of people like those flaws doesn't make them better.

For example, I would never buy a game where there are that many cut-scenes. So it depends on your perspective. But the reviewer definitely gave reasons for the score - some people may disagree but there were legitimate reasons - thus the review is valid. Reviews like this let us know that Kojima's attempt was brave but not perfect.

Same with other widely liked games - some people thought Halo 3 was lame (single player really was about a 7-7.5), others loved the co-player experience and the ability to make movies and stuff (multiplayer was a 10). So, depending on what you like, your score will change. Nothing wrong with that and it is always good to get a number of reviews. If you were a fan of the series it probably doesn't matter anyway so why the excitement. And if you aren't a fan you sure as heck want to know that this is not your typical game - a lot of people would not like to have 10-15 hours of cut scenes and would pass if they knew.

thewhoopimen5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

Hello that's why they give you the option of skipping the cutscenes. Why take a ding out on cutscenes if it's not mandatory to watch? You still get 20 hrs gameplay... That's just retarded. Technical flaws are flaws you can't bypass even if you wanted to. A cut-scene with a skip button getting a negative is just a biased excuse.

The truth is the reviewer just wanted either the attention or a under-the-coat fanboi.

hades075800d ago

To those that say this site is being payed off by Microsoft, remember they gave Ninja Gaiden 2 the lowest score yet, MS's big exclusive game for the summer. I think Eurogamer are just trying to show they can give low scores after Halo 3 and GTA4, which is unfair to great games like NG2 and masterpieces like MGS4.

GameDev5800d ago

fenderputty5800d ago

Eurogamer's review is something to go by when deciding about MGS4 ... I don't think they're paid off though. Some of you guys need to get a grip. They just gave NGII, MS's large summer exclusive, a 7/10.

If anything, this should be looked at as a reason to think Eurogamer's reviews are generally crap for all consoles.

Now ... back to the rest of the 9's and 10's for MGS4 ... whoo!

I always thought Gamestop was biased. They're on Microsoft's payroll for chrissakes. But Eurogamer just blew them out of the water. This is unprecedented corruption. Eurogamer writers do not have souls. They are less than human.

Britjadg5800d ago

if you read the review they give it lower marks for story - which they found confusing...

ironically i have just finished reading IGN who said the story was perfect so dunno how two reviewers can come to different conclusions.
if i were to hazard a guess though, i would think it came down to pedigree and intelligence.

after reading all the material currently available i think that this is an absolutely worthless review.

2) He reviewed only 3 games! =)))
Pirates of the Burning Sea: 6/10
Mario Kart Wii: 8/10
Army of Two: 7/10

It`s like giving NG2, NoMoreHeores to review to a casual gamer, while sonic and mario olimpic games to hardcore gamer. =))

Watkins5800d ago

Yup, they put that score just to attract visitors. Although it's a shame they had to do it with MGS4. But since it's the biggest game of the year, I guess they're doing what they can

foodbox5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

"its almost like console discrimination"

You cannot be serious.

Jesus you people are delusional.

Its a review. MGS4 is 8/10 from Eurogamer. Big deal.

Did you people think that everyone *must* give 11/10 to this game simply because you *wish* it to "be the bestest game in the history of the universe OMG!11!one!"?

You people are going to be *wildly* disappointed when these "exclusive early reviews" stop arriving and the rest of the planet's 20-30 other regular sources give their score.

Its not going to be 11/10.

Personally, you should try and relax. Dont do to yourself what happened after HAZE ended up with 5.6/10. Prepare for a disappointment, and when the game gets a solid 9/10 and its great and you enjoy it then you can be happy.

But you people are just HYSTERICAL with over-hyping this game.

And the Halo jealousy continues. I'm pretty sure you'll never find MGS or any ps3 game in a Halo thread.

pimpstation5800d ago (Edited 5800d ago )

MGS4 doesn't need bribes. Nearly every review has/will call it the greatest game ever made. One xbox fanboy who hates the Metal Gear franchise and gives it an 8 won't change that.

gambare5800d ago

mmm... no, halo 3 was not good, that's why the scores about halo 3 didn't matter, anyway MGS4 received a 9.9 from IGN UK, and IGN UK scored Halo 3 with a 9.5, so, according to IGN UK MGS4 is better than Halo 3

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro39d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Hideo Kojima laments that Metal Gear Solid 4's digital battlefield 'is no longer science fiction'

Game creator Hideo Kojima is and probably will always be best-known for his creation and stewardship of the Metal Gear series at Konami, which since his departure has been more-or-less on permanent hiatus (don't mention Survive). In his almost three decades these games evolved to the point where they predicted certain problems of the information age (MGS 2), took aim at contemporary topics like Guantanamo Bay (MGS: Ground Zeroes), and ended on a profound sense of sadness about our species' inability to break the cycles of global conflict (MGS V).

It's not clear what sparked this reflection, but Kojima's been thinking about Metal Gear Solid 4, an entry that was (and unfortunately still remains) a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In that entry the player controls an aged Solid Snake in the year 2014, caught up in a civil war being fought between Private Military Companies (PMCs).

Dirty_Lemons349d ago

That was a great fucking game/ movie.

DarXyde349d ago

To this day, it's one of those games where I refuse to skip the cutscenes, no matter how many playthroughs I've done.

But if you ask me...MGS2 was bloody prophetic and has aged like fine wine. That game was blasted as the weakest entry, and yet it's so enduring. I replayed it some time last year and it was remarkable.

sadraiden349d ago

Heed not the lamentations of people that say that MGS2 is bad because of the Snake/Raiden bait and switch. Every MGS game has its own merits, and while most people consider 3 to be the best, they all shine equally in my opinion.

porkChop349d ago

@sad

I would generally agree but with the exception of MGSV. It had truly excellent gameplay/combat, but dull and largely empty open world(s), and a narrative that is literally only half finished.

I really wish Kojima hadn't tried to go open world with MGS. It just wasn't right for the series. But I get it. He didn't want to make MG anymore but he wasn't allowed to make anything else. So he had to experiment within that franchise. Still, it was the wrong direction.

Santouryuu349d ago

I have been thinking about this a lot, MGS2 being the weakest and getting blasted.
My conclusion, for some years now, it's my favorite game of the series.
Going from MGS1 to MGS2 was such a big leap, in graphics, mechanics, etc.
And now it's even more relevant for being 'bloody prophetic' as you stated.

Maybe dust of my vita and play it again...

porkChop349d ago

It's a shame we never got a remaster of MGS4. The original game only rendered at 1024x768, and it ran anywhere from like 20fps to 60fps depending on the area. A remaster could have very easily cleaned up the visuals and performance. It's such a great game. I just want to play it again but in its best possible state.

MIDGETonSTILTS17349d ago

I agree, but they did all sorts of tricks to make use of the ps3’s cell processor….they’d probably have to rebuild the game in order to make it run on another machine. And, if that involves remaking those cutscenes somehow, then itll never happen, unfortunately.

porkChop349d ago

Nah. There have been plenty of remasters of PS3 games and they've turned out fine. It can be done.

PitbullMonster348d ago

Ah a man of culture. Duty calls

cell989349d ago

He was always ahead with this series. MSG1 taught me about the importance of passing on our genes into future generations but in a responsible way, for they are bound to what we experienced in our lifetime. Sons of liberty taught me about global control and simulation runs to test society in a grand scale, the importance and dangers of control of information. MGS3 taught me about patriotism and how that can blind you into doing things you never would have otherwise, all for the sake of politicians who only see you as another pawn in their grand scheme of things. MSG4 taught me war is inevitable and always orchestrated because it's great for the economy. Soon simulation systems will start dictating who goes to war and why, all run through proxies. Privatization of military company are already here. We already started to see how a small group of elites dictates everything that happens. Nothing is done, nothing happens without strings being pulled.

Eidolon349d ago

You learned all this from MGS?

Tody_ZA349d ago

All that was literally the themes and core story of each game, so not surprising he learned that from MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular is so relevant today, it was more than a decade ahead of its time and a work of genius. Kojima saw what the digital future was going to become when it was in its infancy. Even MGS 5 despite being unfinished and less of a traditional Metal Gear Solid game with regards to story, had a fair bit to say about language and control over it that is relevant today.

It's a highly acclaimed series for a reason, and one of my favourite.

Eidolon349d ago

I've watched my brother play the MGS games, but I only beat MGS1 myself on the PSP in 2014, and MGSV in 2016. I took the themes and plots as lore, tbh.. trying to piece together the story of MGS rather than relating them to our current times.

Tody_ZA349d ago

It's definitely social commentary, Eidolon. You should read the "themes and analysis" section of the Wikipedia page for MGS2: Sons of Liberty for a start! Game was heavy on this.

Eidolon349d ago

I'll take a look, thanks. Actually might pick up MGS2 again (PS Vita), It's been years since I last played. Might start a new game tbh.

sadraiden349d ago

MGS2 literally predicted digital manipulation of information that we see today all the way back in 2001. MGS2 became Zucc's playbook.

If it wasn't for the retconning of how FOXDIE works, including clunky scenes with Naomi and Liquid, MGS4 would be a perfect game. There are so many gameplay options. It felt like us PS3 owners got something truly unique and special.
