I'm starting to believe there is a certain amount of Western review Bias toward any games coming out of Asia. The reviewers preview was showering this title with excelsis. He was in every sense of the word, more emotionally involved in this MGS4 title than in the Halo3 review, and yet at the end, he throws an 8. But this isn't going to be the first or last time it seems. I just saw the IGN Uk review of MGS4, and they give it a 9.9.... I am like wtf? If its so easy to throw a 10 out Halo3 with its flaws and Halo2.5 gameplay, why is it so hard to score a 10 for MGS4? I mean WHAT gives? My own personal answer unfortuanately has come down to western bias... and I don't really like what my perception is leaning me.

The only reviews that have been disclosed thusfar are **EARLY EXCLUSIVE REVIEWS** take a breath you people. Wait until there are 20-30 reviews and then go look at the metacritic score.

If you think 8/10 is the lowest score this game will get, you are wrong. EVERY game gets a variety of scores -- after 20-30 you get an average, then you've got a general idea of "how it scored".

After reading the review, I'm finding that it sound like EG wanted to be generous -- this review sounds like something out of Rolling Stone, overly wordy and too much obvious praise.

I think he let you in on the situation by telling you how ridiculous and convoluted the story is... without saying it "sucked" or it was "pointless" or "too long for no reason" -- which is what he *wanted* to say but couldnt because this is an "exclusive early review".

The game has some great moments but has a lot of flaws that make it less than it could be (when you compare it to other games). The fact that a certain group of people like those flaws doesn't make them better.

For example, I would never buy a game where there are that many cut-scenes. So it depends on your perspective. But the reviewer definitely gave reasons for the score - some people may disagree but there were legitimate reasons - thus the review is valid. Reviews like this let us know that Kojima's attempt was brave but not perfect.

Same with other widely liked games - some people thought Halo 3 was lame (single player really was about a 7-7.5), others loved the co-player experience and the ability to make movies and stuff (multiplayer was a 10). So, depending on what you like, your score will change. Nothing wrong with that and it is always good to get a number of reviews. If you were a fan of the series it probably doesn't matter anyway so why the excitement. And if you aren't a fan you sure as heck want to know that this is not your typical game - a lot of people would not like to have 10-15 hours of cut scenes and would pass if they knew.

Hello that's why they give you the option of skipping the cutscenes. Why take a ding out on cutscenes if it's not mandatory to watch? You still get 20 hrs gameplay... That's just retarded. Folk were falling over themselves to award it perfect 100%, or 10/10, scores, setting expectations at ridiculous levels. Amazingly, our score of 96% was the world's lowest for a number of weeks, which truly beggars belief.

We're not saying MGS4 isn't brilliant - it clearly is - but temper those expectations with reality. While its individual components are hard to fault, the bigger question is whether it holds together as a whole - and that's an issue we'll attempt to resolve in our review, in PSM102, on-sale next Thursday. Truth is, MGS4 is so complex, nuanced and indulgent, it's too early to say whether it's the work of genius or madness, or - most accurately - both. The trick's whether Kojima's got the balance right from scene-to-scene.

One thing's sure: MGS4's certainly the most interesting game of 2008, and while we only know a select few who've finished it, we've already had in-depth, half-hour minimum, heated debates with all of them about what the game truly means. And, in fairness, we're one of the most dissenting voices - despite thinking MGS4 is incredible.

The thing with Metal Gear is that it's a "love it, hate it affair".

For some people the gameplay IS terrible, the story IS batshit insane, the dialogue and cinematics ARE over the top and cheesy.

For others, all that stuff acts as its greatest strength, which is why I say, if you're already a fan, this is going to be the best game ever, bar none. Not everyone likes Metal Gear, but those that do, like it alot. It shows if you read the reviews who liked the previous games, and who thought the series is a blemish and a mistake to the videogame world.

Is it unfair to have a fan of the genre review the game? A sports guy for sports game a platforming guy for platformers a shooter guy to rate shooters. That guy will know the in's and outs of that genre and be a fan of the good games in that genre. A fan of the series would probably also be more critical of the game wanting certain expectations met quirks fixed etc. While some one who hates the series will have nothing but hate. While a fan can be more objective and base the games on the other ones in the series. The same games the buyers will be judging it by. This guy was not very objective giving the game very little negative comments and alot of those same negative comments were over looked for alot of other games. Bad story = halo3. I was a huge halo fan it was the reason i got an xbox and a 360 and i would have never gave part3 a 10, the 2nd halo yes it was the main game i played for years. 3 felt uninspired boring and more of the same to me by comparison and Im a huge fan. All the other msg4 reviewers that gave it higher scores even if they were fans great that gives the people who are most likely to buy the game a better feel of what they may think of the game being fans of the series/genre. Eight is that tricky "almost brilliant" category, that for fans of the genre in most cases will still warrant serious recommendation to go out and buy, while even people into other genres will probably still draw plenty of enjoyment from. I personally think the review is pretty fair. It's clear that MGS is a franchise that has been around for a long time and loved by many, including the reviewer from Gamepro calling it the best game ever. We're talking about years worth of history coming to closure in this one game. A new gamer would have to be lost with all of the plot and characters involved in this series. You know i haven't read the review (from fear of spoilers). But i don't know exactly what to say. 8 is a good score but it's kind of i don't know out of the norm from the scores we've been seeing so far for MGS4. I don't know but i'd rather wait till i hear more reviews about MGS4 in the coming 2 weeks. Though reguardless of what scores it gets i'm still going to buy it. It just sounds a little weird having a obscure site giving MGS4 a mid ranged score.

Slight edit here. After browsing around the site i noticed that Eurogamer gave Uncharted: Drakes Fortune a 9 out of 10 along with Unreal Tournament 3. Also i've looked at the writer for a few of their Ps3 reviews and i haven't stumbled upon him reviewing any prior Ps3 game. First off reviews are subjective, just like your or my opinion.

Secondly, Halo3 was released in September 2007 and was a benchmark in online gaming and user created content on consoles, for its time.

Thirdly, in the last nine months since Halo3's release the standard of games has been irrevocably raised. Bioshock, The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Mario Galaxy, Rock Band and GTAIV have all raised the standards of what we expect from a game and what merits a high score. Halo3 would not score as highly today because it is not a product of May 2008, it was a game at the very beginning of a significant leap forward in terms of game quality and was reviewed as such in the context of its time.

Fourthly, MGS4 has to be better than the aforementioned titles to warrant the same score, it has to be at the forefront of its time which is not September 2007 but is May 2008. It most notably has to compete in the shadow of GTAIV, which has set a new standard for what a 10/10 means to a reviewer. If MGS4 does not make the leaps and bounds in its genre that GTAIV did in its (in the view of reviewers), then it won't get the same scores. Simple as that.

Finally, to illustrate my last two points in particular I'll use your own argument with another highly rated game, the highest of all time in fact, to illustrate it's ignorance of context.

Good or bad though, that isn't the case.

A game of the present is only ever reviewed on the games of the past.

There is only one place that i go for reviews and that Edge magazine.
They always are straight with their readers and I have found time after time after playing a game and going back over their reviews that they are always right on the money.

Metal Gear Solid is a series that I always found ages very well, you could go back and play any of the existing games and they still would be brilliant but try go back and play the previous Halo games and they will have aged badly.

Its just another review, and a lot of people around here are upset that it didn't get the 10 or 9 that the think it should have (and yet almost none of them have played it yet).

The sad thing is that the game still got a great score of an 8! I do not think this backlash regarding this review is about anything to do with fan boys supporting a console, I do think it is to do with protecting a very valuable series that has proved itself time and time again and has gone down in gaming history. Having all consoles and handhelds is great because you get to experience all sorts of classics, like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears, Shadow of the Colossus, Loco Rocco, Super Mario Galaxy etc... Theses games have done things that surpass. Then you have games like Halo, that in my opinion after playing all 3 are average games and that’s it, they don’t really push any boundaries and yet somehow gets crazy scores. Why does everyone seem to have a "glass is half empty" attitude to this? The review is actually mainly positive, his issues seem to be that it is more of the same (but better) so it wont convert any MGS haters (which he states at the beginning he is NOT, he has a love and hate relationship with it which is fair enough) and that the cinematics can be a pain and can go on too long, which people have moaned about in previous MGS games. Stop writing off the review because it didn't give a game you like (though you haven't played it) something less than 10. Ninja Gaiden 2 has a Metacritic score of 8.3 / 10 currently, and that is with all these concerns about preview-code affecting the score. NGII has nothing to do with this -- NGII is going to be terrific game, and it is unlike MGS4 in every way. They are very different experiences.

After a month, when there are 30 reviews for both games, I dont doubt that MGS4 will do good. But everyone here seems to be forgetting that "early exclusive reviews* are almost **ALWAYS** good.

Remember, the "exclusive early reviews" for Haze from Famitsu was 34/40 and PS Magazine Italy was 9/10.

After the embargo was lifted on "the rest" the game ended up with 5.6/10.

Considering that Kojima is practically a legend in the gaming world and this is his "last" installment in his flagship saga then it should be valued as one of the greatest. Many (including myself) are upset because GTAIV has been receiving perfect scores across the board in spite of its errors only because the media hyped it just that much. Gaming journalism even mention the errors of the game yet it receives a perfect score. The only "cons" I have read about MGS4 is that the story is confusing and the graphics. Well OF COURSE to someone who doesn't know the story then it would be confusing, and the graphics of GTAIV are in no way better (if not worst) then MGS4's. I'm guessing that the media doesn't want GTAIV to be jnocked from its pedestal. And promise if GTAIV was a ps3 exclusive it wouldn't have scored that high (but that's another topic).

Metal Gear Solid has some of the greatest storytelling of any game ever. The graphics have always been cutting edge for their time during the entire series. The gameplay is loved by fans all over the world, with intense boss battles and extremely creative stealth moments and worlds that let you decide how you want to do things. Halo 3 is not a bad game. Its a good game, for a shooter. It gets better reviews because it is difficult to argue about a "shooter" being good or not, if the mechanics are solid and the game design is good, it gets a great review. Not to mention no game has ever been hyped like Halo 3.

Its understandable that people with less brain power and a desire to kill without stopping will be turned off by the epic amazingness of metal gear solid. I understand that your brain is limited, and i feel for you. Luckily, there is hope. Try going to a good school, or possibly reading. from inside Eurogamer - the score 8 was decided before they even played the game. I believe they did this to help create traffic on the site and get serious action on the fourms. I'll try and find the source again.

However, it does go to show that every game site is biased one way or another, and more seem to be in Microsoft's corner for some reason.

These sites should stop doing reviews as I have yet to see something that is not biased in some way. Just provide game info, pictures, videos and a place for visitors to post there own reviews. ...I get the sense that even though Eurogamer gave MGS4 an 8/10, the review read more like they should've or wanted to give it a 6/10. I'm just saying this to point out that the reviews as of late (after GTA4 especially) require and demand that consumers of these reviews think more critically about what the reviewers are saying about a game itself as well as what they are implying they liked and disliked (the bias) through thier comments.

I rather a reviewer give a game a score of 5/10 and their comments justify that 5/10 then read a reviewer give a game a 10/10 and then complain about aspects of a game that just were horrible. I think A's, 5's and 10's or 100% scores are unjustifiable if theres is anything or any portion of a game that a reviewer questions or frustrates them to the point of exhaustion.

This review for "me" was like an casual acquaintance trying to convince me to eat at a restaurant that they've only eaten at occasionally AND they are trying to convince me that they eat at this restaurant all the time YET they can't tell me once thing off the menu AND I'm paying for the meal. The score seems kind of forced to keep people from hating on their website. Fanboys type first and think later and Eurogamer is cognizant of this very important fact. I wonder what this review looked like and what the final score was before the edit...

8/10 is not a bad score, but there's not a soul on N4G, and i mean not one single SOUL on N4G who doesn't know that MGS4 is actually one of the best games that has ever graced, any console, period. and it's not even out yet.

for once, forget that the game is a PS3 EXCLUSIVE, forget all the other stuff that puts your "ego" before your "gamer"self, and play any of the MGS series, and you'll see that its a series that transcends reviews, good or bad. it is easily one the most emotional, immersive gaming experience i've ever felt. If there was ever the an easier way to get around underscoring a revolutionary game product, this is it. MGS4 is going to get good reviews and bad reviews. You people need to understand the OBVIOUS and that is what appeals to you may not appeal to others. I will say this game will average a 9. I say average because some sites use letter grades and others use percentages and others use a point system.

Bottom line is it shouldnt matter what anyone else thinks. If you are a fan of the series, get the game. If you choose to ONLY to read the reviews and base your purchase on that then you will never really be able to think for yourself.

Anyway.....yeah we all know this game deserves at least a 9.5 it by no means will be a perfect game...since it is overwhelmed by cut scenes which is both good and bad. I personally love cutscenes but ya know playing the game is the main point of buying a game and when half of it is a video....well that makes it not a perfect game....but it still is incredible.....

Its a shame there are so many reviewers that hate on all games...makes you wonder what are they actually looking for??? Especially at the quality a game like MGS4 was made at...............

But anyway we all know its a good game and most likely we will all get it....so f this dude and his review cuz it doesnt really matter anyway....

Yes, they are extremely harsh reviewers and rarely give review scores on the level of their peers. Halo deserved at least a 9 (when it came out at least) because it showed people that FPSs can control well on consoles; Gears deserved at least a 9 because it was extremely pretty and fun; MGS4 deserved at least a 9 because it closes a long standing franchise and is a great swansong. I think the score discrepancy could either be publicity stunts or giving the wrong reviewer the job of reviewing the game.

these reviewers get all amped up on big named games like halo 3 and gta4.. They play them for like 30 minutes and think the game is god.. Write up a review and slap a 10 on it.. Halo 3 was horrible. Gat4 is great but not perfect.. And how many times does a gaming site 3 a couple weeks later write some dumb article on why you should sell the game or what was missing in the game or how it could have been better when they gave the game a 10 score..

Graphics look good, but GeOW 2 already has this game beat by miles. Gameplay, well, when your not watching yet again another cutsceen, looks pretty decent. Sound sounds excellent and replayablity, doesn't look to promising.

Overall, I sure this game will rate very high, but definately won't break any records, and for good reasons. MGS 4 just ain't a huge hit most Sonyfanboys will make it out to be. Most people who want this game already have a PS3. There will be a slight surge of sales, but then the PS3 will yet again sell in poor numbers.

Overall, already looking like this game will not live up to the hype, only diehard fans of games like this will be happy. For the majority, nobody really cares.

It started out for me on the NES then the PS1 then the PS2 hell i even bought a Gameqube just to play the Remake of the best game to ever grace a gaming system. And after 20 long years it ends with the PS3 and i Could give a Rats A$% if some half A#$ gaming sight gives it a 8 out of 10 by some one thats not even a MGS fan.
