Experienced Points Why I Hated Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is one of the most highly regarded games. Ever. On the PS2, it's rated as #3 of all time, and actually scores well above the other two games (Tony Hawk 3 and GTA III, if you're curious) when you average in user reviews. It's certainly the high-water mark for anything with the name Resident Evil on it. (Including the movies. No, especially the movies.) People still talk about the characters and the gameplay is still fondly remembered. People still talk about key moments in the game, like the moment when the chainsaw guy shows up. The visuals still hold up today and every time a new Resident Evil game comes out it winds up getting measured using the RE4 yardstick.

"It's kind of like how Galaxy Quest is aimed at fans of Star Trek. You need to be a fan of the thing they're mocking to be in on the joke. Otherwise it just comes off like the writers copying the worst parts of already terrible material."

Are you sure? My parents have never watched an episode of Star Trek and they love Galaxy Quest. That movie is brilliant!

Also, I totally understand having different expectations for a game, but even if you expected something else, RE4 is incredible. I expected to be scared, too. It's not very good at scaring you, but it's masterful at keeping you on edge. The music. The sounds. The AI. Everything in that game is designed to make you feel uneasy. I love it! I know every inch of that game.

RE4 makes you feel uncomfortable and always watching your back

-MD-3646d ago

Classic Resident Evil makes you feel that way, surely not RE4 though.

How does one feel uncomfortable or feel the need to "watch your back" when you have unlimited ammo and herbs?

randomass1713646d ago

RE4 was a true innovation of its time. Everything, from the controls to the writing was some of the best in the series. Unfortunately nowadays RE4 gets a bad rap because of its sequels abusing the same control style and crapping all over the horror elements that were still in the game.

MrSwankSinatra3646d ago (Edited 3646d ago )

NO, RE4 gets a bad rap because it's not a real resident evil game. The people who say that they want resident evil to return to it's roots but then turn around and say that RE4 is the best/favorite one are complete hypocrites. The only real resident evil games are the original Resident Evil, 2, 3: Nemesis, Code: Veronica, Zero & REmake.

randomass1713646d ago (Edited 3646d ago )

I disagree. RE4 was most certainly a real Resident Evil game. It had similar tank controls, it had biological experiments and weapons and guns, it had a Mercenaries mode and it Leon S. Freaking Kennedy. I like the old games but I like RE4 too. That doesn't make me hypocritical. That just means that I recognize RE4 as a great thing that was crapped on in RE5 and RE6.

You don't easily shrug off the horror of getting your head chainsawed off by some dude wearing a potato sack over his head.

I didn't read the article and I won't, but Im expecting reason #1 to be that the author of the article is a dipshit.

randomass1713646d ago

Articles like these are often meant to draw attention anyway. It's like coming across an article from someone who says "Super Mario 64/Crash Bandicoot/Sonic the Hedge 2 sucks!"

crazysammy3646d ago

Yea exactly. This has become my least favorite thing about "gaming news" lately is the sensationalism and headlines for grabbing attention.

LightofDarkness3646d ago

Great idea, the author actually makes a great point but if you act like an ignoramus about it because the title says something you superficially disagree with (proving his point, BTW) then it's like it doesn't exist! Well done you. Surely you've outsmarted him.

MrSwankSinatra3646d ago

people are so quick to say to discredit the journalistic skill of person based off a headline, yet they don't even bother to read to article to make an assessment.

JustInTlME3646d ago

Sounds like this guy is just bad at games.

izumo_lee3646d ago

Don't get me wrong, RE4 is an absolute brilliant game. However it is the game that started the RE free fall turning the series into an action game rather than a survival horror game. It's the game that added all the QTEs, the big set pieces, gun heavy combat that the latter games have relied too heavily upon.

randomass1713646d ago

I see what you're saying, but to be fair that isn't RE4's fault. Shinji Mikami had a really good idea with that game. He wanted to focus on great gameplay on top of the existing Resident Evil formula. The peopl who took the mantle on 5 and 6 completely ignored everything that made a Resident Evil game Resident Evil. No dark atmosphere, no innovations, just co-op and uninteresting writing and characters. RE4 was fantastic and Mikami took all the goodness with him when he left Capcom.

VJGenova3645d ago

I generally despise QTE's but when this game first launched, I was excited by them. They kept me in the game. I've attached a link that explains why RE4 is amazing ... at least when compared to Kingdom Hearts 2 ...

I will say that my favorite in the series is Nemesis. It's the most uncomfortable to play because that guy could pop up at any time.

If you're wanting more PSVR 2 support, you should probably buy all of these games.

Speak with your wallet!

Profchaos29d ago

Bit rich to have to buy games you don't want because you want Sony to support the expensive headset they sold us which cost as much as the console it runs on beyond paying third partys to support it.
Seriously in terms of first party we have horizon on day 1 and a gt 7 vr mode.

They seemingly have made little effort to support it beyond paying Capcom to make re games in VR or a second party studio to make firewall which was mismanaged.

I'm a day 1 psvr2 user and the only thing I'm excited for right now is PC support.

I commented recently this bespoke VR game development model we have right now clearly doesn't work

crazyCoconuts29d ago

On the one hand I feel like there's been plenty of smaller non-AAA games to play and occupy me as a supplement to my flat screen gaming.
But I agree that Sony has done nothing to elevate this beyond the niche it's in and into the mainstream where it would be economical to create AAA games for it.

Babadook728d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Most of these games are worth owning for most people; I own all but 2 of them in fact. So I agree with kevco33. I think you're crazy if you downplay this list quite frankly. Sony can't keep funding software if people don't buy any of it, the ball is squarely in OUR court.

Sony has spent a lot on 3rd party stuff this gen like RE.

phoenixwing29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Saving up for the headset is my first hurdle. Let alone buying games I don't want lol

mudakoshaka28d ago

People downvoting you for not having enough finances...what a world we live in, haha

phoenixwing28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

@mudako
They feel affronted at the very thought that I don't plunk down 500 immediately lol I have a little over 900 games in my backlog I've been buying games instead of hardware ever since I got my PC and ps5. I just don't know if vr is really for me honestly. Every time I have a couple hundred allocated to video games it makes more sense to buy a bunch of flat games instead of vr ones

mudakoshaka29d ago

I have 9 out of these 10 games. I try to buy all the VR games I like to support the advancement of VR!

TheEroica28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I spoke with my wallet after watching the first headset get weak support. Easy pass until Sony earns my money. Feel bad for those who parted with 500 bucks, falling for the hype that Sony was actually gonna support this thing.

Neonridr29d ago

I own 7 of these titles off the list, lol.

NotoriousWhiz29d ago

I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding onto my psvr 2. I enjoy what it has currently, but it seems unlikely to get anything else. Might be better off just waiting for something with more support if that ever comes.

Profchaos28d ago

As a fellow psvr2 owner the question seemingly comes down to do you own a PC.

I think I'm all in I have a habit to hold onto my systems anyhow I still have my psvr1 to hell I still have my NES.

But while it's still worth something yeah you could sell it and if Sony turns the ship around you should be able to buy another one for less than you soldmit for I feel like we won't see any fix for the headset for the next 2 years rumours show that Sony has no current first party VR games in active development after they closed London studios

The whole psvr2 situation has left me feeling a little burnt on PlayStation as a whole to be honest. The first psvr felt experimental but it was supported far more than this superior headset

MIDGETonSTILTS1729d ago

GT7 surprised me, because I hate racing games, but i poured 100 hours into it way too quickly.

I’m looking forward to the Metro VR game this year, and I hope that WW2 dogfighter game releases eventually.

talocaca29d ago

I have most of them 😅

Waiting for a sale on Synapse and Arizona Sunshine 2.....also Metro coming this year looks great.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Was Devastated With Bugs A Month Before Launch

The Resident Evil 4 remake's director has revealed in a recent documentary that the game was riddled with bugs in its final month before launch.

Rebel_Scum45d ago

Not a big surprise really. All games are pretty rough until the very end and everything is released with bugs regardless of how the consumer quantifies it as being “polished.”

CrimsonWing6945d ago

That’s sort of how game development or any kind of software development goes. Looking for bugs and debugging, QA, and trying to scramble and polish everything before a deadline’s up.
