Defending Twilight Princess

It’s a very odd thing to defend a Zelda game that’s been one of the most widely acclaimed in the series. After all, the more mainstream realistic aesthetic and “gritty” tone made it more palatable to those who disliked the cel-shaded style of its predecessor. Yet perhaps it’s those qualities that cause it to be mildly dismissed by other fans of the franchise. There’s always somebody ready to expound on The Wind Waker’s visual and technical style, but few people have more than a spoonful of praise for Twilight Princess. Perhaps it’s because Wind Waker attracts more libelers and thus needs defending. Maybe it’s because Twilight Princess’ realistic style is seen as “mainstream” and thus boring. But of course, some people just genuinely didn’t like it. It’s important to remember, though, that Twilight Princess has plenty of its own power.

Twilight Princess is my favorite in the series. It had a great atmosphere, art style and story in my opinion. I was sucked into Twilight Princess' world and I hope to see another Zelda game like this in the future.

I played it for 6 hours and didn't reach the first temple. I gave up after that.

I didn't read the article. My comments are solely about my personal opinions on the two games.

I thought Twilight Princess started off well. I liked the roof top Hyrule castle scene and the forest dungeon is probably one of the best in the game.

However, the game was anticlimactic as all heck. Gantz's stage consisted of three tiny rooms. The Hyrule castle stage (before you fought Gannon) was also WAY too short. Still with these shortcomings I really enjoyed TWP I just thought it was too easy like most Zelda titles. (I have yet to play Skyward Sword which I hear is more of a challange.)

I absolutely loved Wind Waker. It was the first game I bought with my Gamecube. I was apprehensive about the graphical style at first, but the game quickly won me over.

The games does start off too slowly. First you have the little island that acts as the learning hub, followed by the pirate story, followed by the huge boring stealth stage where Link loses his sword was almost too much for my patience. Luckily, the games picks up when you get the red lion boat.

Of the two games, I would say Wind Waker is the better overall game, but I really liked them both. (I think the swimming feature in Waker where Link had the endurance gauge should have been kept for future installments.)

Just my thoughts although I'm interested to hear what other fans think.

I am still playing TP. I find it kind of boring and drab, for a Zelda. I have been playing it off and on.

Worse, I bought SS and I fell in love with it- and beat it. It is now 1 or 2 on my fav. Zelda chart.

So, it is hard for me go back to the old way of playing.

Too me Midna is the best part of the game- but then again I like all of Links sidekicks (not Tingle). The Character models are great but the world is brown and gray- thus boring. And Hyrule Field is so empty and repetitive.

Everyone has a different Zelda at the top, I can't fault you or say that I am more correct.

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno71d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.

Directionless Modern Zelda Should Return to its 3D Roots

Matt from We Game Daily writes "The Legend of Zelda series has gone in a different direction. One which, try as I have, I just can’t get on board with. Here is why I think Zelda should return to its 3D roots."

Amen! A good, tight, Zelda game with a focus on dungeons and puzzles. Let people have the new style Zelda if you gotta, but let us have the OoT style games too. That's not without precedent either, the handheld 2D Zelda's in the style of A Link to the Past etc have coexisted alongside the 3D Zelda's before

As much as I like BoTW, TotK, I need my traditional Zelda games as well, I could not endlessly play the open world Zelda games, plus it's harder to keep those fresher than the traditional games.

Eidolon101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

BotW was just as fresh to the franchise as OoT was. TokT was great but the next LoZ would have to move from that formula to be fresh again. There's only so much they can do with the hardware. I think they focused too much on making the world big instead impactful. I felt the world was sort of empty and repetitive in TotK, sure there was a lot to do but no more difference a Ubisoft game..

I wouldn't worry too much. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

Ristul101d ago

Wind Waker had a perfect balance of open world and a cool, well hand-crafted design. Maybe try to keep the open world but put in effort to make more memorable story driven quests and locations.

I like it would also be cool if some created Dragon Caesar in the game I would love to watch the two going at it.
