Life after Angry Birds: Former Rovio devs enjoy more freedom with their new studio (interview)

GamesBeat: Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds franchise is huge — it sold 8 million copies on Christmas day alone. You can find the games on phones, tablets, and even consoles. And you can barely walk outside without seeing its brightly colored mascots plastered on all sorts of merchandise. So who in their right mind would leave that all behind?

Last year, we found three of them: Tuomas Erikoinen, Ilkka Halila, and Antti Stén. They all left their jobs at Rovio to form Boomlagoon, a new independent mobile-game studio based in Helsinki, Finland. Its first title, Noble Nutlings, is out now for free for iOS devices.

MacWorld: Cute cartoon animals, physics-based puzzles, and a star-based rating system—sound familiar? Noble Nutlings for iOS is a bouncy, cart-swerving drive down memory lane. Boomlagoon, an indie team that happens to be made up of many ex-Rovio (of Angry Birds fame) developers, is the development brains behind the physics-based Nutlings. The interface, art style, and the build-a-contraption and obstacle course gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of Rovio's recent venture, Bad Piggies.

Gi - Noble Nutlings is the first game release from Boomlagoon, a company started by ex-Rovio employees. Yes, that Rovio. The same Rovio that unleashed the fowl-flinging, swine-slaying phenomenon known as Angry Birds. Considering the widespread popularity that their previous game was able to achieve, Boomlagoon’s founders certainly have a lot to live up to.
