MMO’s are already huge games and most of them are updated regularly with more. Can an MMO get too big? Joshua Mobley of VGutopia.com breaks it down.
Blizzard Entertainment has announced the opening of beta registrations for “World of Warcraft: The War Within,” inviting players to explore new subterranean worlds beneath Azeroth.
Danish from eXputer: "Despite Blizzard's attempt to give a fresh new spin to World of Warcraft, some fans still seem to be stuck in the past."
HG writes: "Blizzard is usually pretty bad at keeping secrets, but the company somehow managed to keep this one under wraps until now. Plunderstorm is a special limited-time event that’s basically World of Warcraft’s take on the Battle Royale genre."
Nope but an mmo can have too little content.
It cannot have "too much content" but it can definitely seem like it. The content has got to be presented in a way that is manageable to the player and it cannot overwhelm them. If people feel like they are just throw into the world too suddenly, they might get overwhelmed with how much is going on. This happens in more than just MMMOs - I know plenty of people that don't play Elder Scrolls for this very reason.
It is a very fine balance!
Depends on the game, and the current playerbase.
Part of the reason I left FF11; there's too much end game content, and not enough low to mid level activities to help from burning people out. Back in 2004 there was something to do for every level up to 75 (Cap back then) up to and including Chains of Promethia missions (Due to mission level restrictions).
I went back in 2011 and everyone was so hell bent on Abyssea and you "HAVE" to be at level 90 before you could do anything (Until the cap was raised to 95 then 99); and at the time I left in May 2012 it was "Manditory" to have special weapons for a 5-10 minute fight for a "Chance" to get some decent items/gear.
In short, I would say if your going to include content, there should be a balance between new, mid level, and end game players.
No such thing as having too much of something that is good.
Too much kissing? No.
Too much kissing a skunk's crotch? Probably.
Everquest has too much content. There will be 19 expansions in November. It gets extremely hard for newcomers to get into a game when it gets that big. Also, with so much content zones tend to be pretty empty, even on larger servers.
