I hate when some is blaming others for their failure, do what u gotta do, do the best thing u can and see how gamers react, don't make Ninja Gaiden 3 and say God Of War ruined the market?
Nope, japanese devs are crap in this gen,the truth is Japanese devs are really behind Western devs, they never kept up with the times and now their games all feel dated and sluggish.
Japanese games have there own problems.............but despite all this if you want all the creativity and originality games have to offer.......we need japan......
While I dont like the words used in the article, he is right. But what he says doesnt sell, actually does sell
I mean when I think of creativity in the platforming, action adventure, fighting, rpg, puzzzle spaces I think of mario galaxy, zelda, blazblue, valkyria chronicles, layton
all japanese titles this gen
what we really need less of is these shoddy articles, and paying attention to nothing developers like fish who doesnt believe what he says ( because his game rips off japanese games) and focus on gamin
I think the western influence this gen has really stifled the creativity of Japanese devs and the games they make. They're so worried about pleasing Western gamers for some damn reason, they they forgot what made their games awesome in the first place.
I think they need to stop worrying about whats going on outside of Japan and get back to their roots.
The article is full of bull. It starts with a headline asking a question (always a good way to spot a crap article), blames the western games (for what? for being good and provide a much better alternative to Japanese games? Claims that good Japanese games like Yakuza (which is basically a GTA clone) are not being played by anyone while the series sold millions of copies, and then concludes that "Whilst Western developers remake and update, the Japanese innovate" (way to go - right after giving Yakuza as an example...) and throws two more examples in the form of Mario and SoTC (both of which are from past generation, whereas the Japanese stagnation we see is happening in the current gen.
your screen name certainly fits what you write. Its funny when theres a positive piece about japan the insecure westerners come right out of the woodwork................
His overall point was correct. Any shred of originality and risk this gen has come from the other side of the pond.
"Japanese stagnation" amounts to nothing more than trolling really. Its kind of sad........because what I gather all the best games are on japanese systems, made by japanese devs.
You play layton? or shiren 5? or valkyria? or tactics advance 2? or mario galaxy? or devil survivor? or radiant historia? or any number of really amazing titles?
If we want to talk about innovation, only japan has actually created new genres this gen
@givemeshelter Whose blaming anyone? Japanese gaming is really all there is left to play thats interesting.....
If you think that "Any shred of originality and risk" comes from one place then you are clearly playing the wrong games. Let's talk Mario Galaxy which you mentioned for example, as the game has universal acclaim: What's exactly the uber original idea about that game? Can you describe it in words? Is it perhaps the gravity and spherical worlds!? Because regarding that Miyamoto himself had to confirm that he didn't copy the idea from Ratchet & Clank. http://www.joystiq.com/2007... So which side of the pond this idea came from first? Not to mention, all of these gravity games in mario don't even compare to a shred of the level of originality introduced by mechanics in World of Goo, Braid and others - all coming from Western developers, with nothing from the east that can quite compare to them. Or did you forget those? So how has Japan only created new games this genre? And which genres are those? Because the original article doesn't state any such genre and neither do you. Catherine after all is just a modern day Sokoban and Yakuza is a clone of GTA - so that's another point for western devs. Is there any innovation similar to Tower Defense or MOBA sub-genres created by western developers? Even the article forgets that the multiplayer leveling-up mechanics and perk system were made popular and refined by the first Modern Warfare. And how about the switchable cover and horde mode from Gears? How about the Director AI in L4D? How about the heavy online integration, theater mode and multi-player forge mode of Halo 3? How about the cinematic-like experience of Uncharted? How about the innovation made by Harmonix by Guitar Hero? L.A Noire and the motion facial capture? The radiant storytelling in Bastion? The 64 player online of Battlefield and 256 players online of MAG? Littlebigplanet play-create-share concept? It this list big enough for you or should I keep going? It's not me who's claiming there’s a Japanese stagnation but rather western and eastern developers, designers and producers alike. I still have the utmost respect for Japanese developers who know what they're doing: Platinum Games who keep pushing boundaries with each game they release no matter if it's on the Wii or on the HD platforms, From Software with their innovative mechanics in Demon's Souls, Itagaki and formerly Team Ninja which fell from grace once he's left, Grasshopper with Suda51 and his crazy and unique games - and even small independent developers as we can see from great games like Cave Story. What's even funnier is that you're making your claims based on that the "best games are on japanese systems". What does it have to do with the game itself if the hardware was made in the West or Japan? Infact, one can argue that the PC is still the most innovative place for games and the PC is pretty much split by western developed operating systems. Add to that the western Xbox by MS and the western mobile platforms from Apple and Google and you can easily see that the majority of gaming platforms are western. And even on the Japanese systems, some of the best in-house developers are western: Metriod Prime series is the best series on the Wii/GC is western developed, and most of the prominent developers in Sony's arsenal are western as well. The Japanese publishers are following suit, with Capcom working on many games with western developers, and Square Enix purchasing Eidos. Even the humble Kojima himself stated that his studio is actually a multi-cultural studio who's just being run by someone who happens to be Japanese. The world is becoming more international, the "west" has won, and those who don't accept it are more likely to fall behind...
Japanese developers thought this gen would be like previous gens where they pumped out tired games on tired engines. Sure there are some great games to come out of Japan like Dark Souls, which is a very western style game. They also failed to notice the direction gamers were going and chose not to change. WRPG's are kicking the crap out of JRPG's and they can't seem to get the shooter games down. I'm happy to see gaming come back to the west, been away far too long.

But if a Nintendo game was from Japanese devs I wouldn't have an issue.

It just fails on every point it's trying to raise
