All I know is that if it wasn't for Nintendo's sheer arrogance, we would never have had the Playstation.

I really think Nintendo needs to work harder to attract third party publishers, because I don't think Nintendo have been very good with third parties.

I agree with the article, but in the end all you need is to make a great game not a shabby port and it will sell.
No matter what publisher or what platform.
Gamers choose their games based on quality not based on publisher/developer.
Great games sell, no matter what platform or publisher.

So, it was a Misguided idea. But not as heartless as it seems on its face.
The reason Nintendo did what it did- Blocked games from coming to market based on Quality and Saturation- was because of what happened to Atari and Intellivision.

Atari and Intellivision was before the NES brought back gaming. In the Atari days they release tons of games, games that we have now come to know as SHOVELWARE. Shovel-ware killed Atari and Intellivision and the Industry.

Nintendo created the Nintendo Quality Seal. That Seal meant that they personally gave their guarantee that the game was of high/moderate Quality. They actually looked at every game.

Now you have to think Shovelware isn't as much of a problem to us today because we have better ways to find out about games that people had in the 70's and 80's.

Have you ever had to call a Hotline to find out how to beat a game? No, you just Google.

So, it was a Misguided idea. But not as heartless as it seems on its face.

I am glad that Nintendo was able to restore the market

And I am glad that later Sony was able to bring Freedom to Nintendo's re-foundation.

"Nintendo created the Nintendo Quality Seal. That Seal meant that they personally gave their guarantee that the game was of high/moderate Quality. They actually looked at every game."

I don't know just how true that is, but I HIGHLY DOUBT the looked at EVERY game. Case in point, LJN games.

Were there game stores back in the 80s where you could trade in your games? I imagine it must have felt like major balls to buy a game like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for around $50 (or however much new NES games costed), go home and play for 2 minutes, die and get stuck, so you either had to suck it up and endure and finish the game, or admit defeat and waste $50.

Some take this generation for granted, but at least we have games that are at least beatable, we don't have games that pad out the gameplay time by making it a hundred times harder, and that we can trade in games.

nintendo is still stuck in the 1980's with Mario, Zelda and Pokemons 1-500.

Sony has held the gaming industry up high from drowning for almost 20 years because they took a risk and push gaming to a new level of creativity and technology. When Sony as a gaming company dies, so will gaming.

If there was so Sega and no Sony, gaming would still be stuck in the 8-bit era.

I partially agree with you in that competition breeds creativity in the market, however nintendo is a beast all thier own. how could you look at the evolution of the mario and zelda series (the pokemon series can be the ace up your sleeve cause they really don't change much lol) and say they are stuck in the 1980's? I'll not discount any other system cause they each bring something different to the table. n64 had nothing like legends of legaia, but playstation had nothing like goldeneye, the list goes on. these differences is what made video games so exciting as a gamer you were constantly like "what are they gonna do next?". But nowadays, this new gen of so called core gamers really b and m about a company having a different controller from the other...really?!? By the way you do realize the playstation is a big foot in nintendos mouth right? nintendo came up with the idea of games on disc went to sony to build it then canned the project. sony took the idea and ran thus without nintendo sony would never have gotten into gaming to begin with.

Pokemon didn't come out in the 1980's.

No it won't. As they say, life goes on.

Sony's real innovation was introducing media playback hardware hence the all-in-one entertainment hub, because software-wise it was the 3rd-party developers and publishers that did all the innovating while Sony was too busy moneyhatting for exclusive rights and making clones of popular IP's of the day.

Um. No. Gaming was in the 16-32 bit era by the time Sony showed up. And Sega was in the midst of a decline, trading Nintendo's shadow for Sony's shadow to wallow under.
