This creepy move by EA/Microsoft makes me revaluate my opinion about Kinect entirely. Turns out it IS actually good for something! Good for companies who wish to spy and monitor your every "private" action, be it sleeping, conversation, (insert other suspected details here).
i don't use kinect cause MS can dl and use anything stored Who's to say their not monitoring already. Not that i have anything to hide but even still, its invasion of my privacy. Hell, my ps eye isn't even hooked up, i didn't read anything as bad as kinect but who the hell knows.
@ZombieNinjaPanda Yeah, because it's WAY too hard to go into the options screen and select "turn off". We HAVE to go and wish that because you don't want it, everyone else should be denied the option. Makes much better sense to just deny everyone an option they might want because you don't want it.
I fail to see how an optional thing makes something bad when you don't have to even use it. If you were forced to use it, then that would be different. But you're not, are you? Then what's the issue?
Oh crap! I didnt realize this until you mentioned this! I mean the idea would be sweet if the media wasnt on there death to video games and blame video games BS coverage
Before people overreact, FIFA does the same thing. You get punished for insulting the referee when you swear and your player is not allowed to play for the next game. And it works in German.
Wow people on here really do make me lol. As soon as a developer adds something to a game to add to the experience but say you dont have to use it people still complain. I bet it the next cod came out with a new engine and wiped the floor with anyother game in terms of looks and how it played people would still say its the same old cod and only kids buy it.
We should support the developers to add new things to games as it opens the minds of the developers and gives us other ways to play games and as long as it dose not spoil the game why not have voice or movement tracking if it enhances the game and if its an option so you dont have to use it then even better.
People need to stop living in the past and open there eyes to new things.
@mcstorm - I'm all for voice recognition, but I don't see how this adds to the experience at all. Adding to the experience would be something like... the player has the motion tracker and calls out which direction the aliens are coming from and NPCs react accordingly... or there are points in the game where the player and their NPC squad need to split up, so the player tells which NPCs to go which direction, and where they will all meet up again... or giving orders or reminders to "check those corners" that make your squad more alert for a short while. Some people swear more than others, so some will either be penalized in the case of swearing at a ref in a soccer game, which will eventually make them just turn the feature off, or they will be rewarded in some weird way, which will encourage people to swear. It's just lazy implementation of what Kinect or any other voice recognition could do.
It sounds like baby steps towards invading our right to privacy if you ask me.
Features like this may appear technically-cool, but it doesn't genuinely add to the game in any way. If anything, it's going to promote minors to swear during their game sessions, Lol. I think some technology is too nosy or intrusive on the customer, unnecessarily. Just like how new smartphones can tell whether or not "your eyes is looking @ the phone or not & adjusts settings accordingly. I'm not a cannibal, criminal or anything, but I don't want my gadgets paying more attention to me than I'm paying to them.
So on one hand, you invoke privacy rights and on the other hand, you step all over freedom of speech offered in a video game through touting censorship in games.
This can't be serious... what a complete and utter waste of a feature, I mean I know devs are pretty much forced by MS to think of a use for Kinect but come on now this is pathetic.
Really kinda hoping someone actually argues in favour of why this is a good idea, so I can have a good laugh.
Well, I don't know, but I thought it might be a cool feature if it made the game harder, or scarier.
Like, when you start swearing a lot, like "F..F..F..F" while very scared, maybe they'll have something lunge out at you, or something. IOW, if you show that your scared, you'll get even more scared.
I hate the idea that it makes the game easier. I often swear at my games, and just cause it's signals stress (that I enjoy overcoming when challenged), I don't want the game "giving me a pass."
What you're talking about would just encourage swearing to see what might happen. Guess how happy the moron parents groups would be about that? Sure, their kids shouldn't be playing an M rated game anyway, but we all know they would be and if enough of them get riled up who knows how it could impact the industry. I want my M rated games to keep being released.
Doesn't add to the game? Makes game more immersive. Now you can use voice commands to control line changes in NHL for example or call out pick and rolls in NBA 2k on the fly, without removing your fingers off the sticks. If you swear at the ref then you will get punished just like in real life where coaches and players get carded (soccer) or recieve a penalty (hockey) for disrespecting the ref. And its not just sports games, gives lots of options for developers in other different genres. And its not like you cannot turn off the feature.
I think it is actually quite refreshing to see that game developers are trying to think of news way to interact with games and the players. Even more so to a degree which you will not realises 100% that you are effecting the game play in some way, swearing out of fear, excitement etc.
Yeah some people might think it is a useless mechanic and a waste of time but this is how developers improve and evolve games by trying out new techniques.
Don't like new features? Stick to your arcade machine that never changes.
Im pretty sure kinectic haters didnt even read the article and from the headline, thought: "O it can tell when you swear and will go all big brother on you and ban you."
When in reality, there might be some cool features or responses based on things you say.
then drop some $ in it each time. Maybe that will appease the game when you swear?
You and everyone else on the hate wagon.
Bravo!
...Kinect is good for anything BUT gaming.
You are not being forced to use Kinect and it does not take anything away from the game if you play it without Kinect.
Just because something is optional and you don't have to use it doesn't suddenly make it not bad.
They have had it for years.

Does this mean that the "game" will be essentially "listening" to you & your surroundings...?
Hmmm...
Now, that's actually scary!
What the hell seriously.

This has players trying to remain calm, during stress.
I think part of playing video games is working through said stress.
I dont lke the idea of a game going easy on me just cause I swear at it.
Imagine Fallout/Skyrim lockpicking opening magically because you swore enough... lame.

*cough* hypocrite

Anyway, Im yet to see a voice command feature that's more convenient and functions better than pressing a button.
* Initiating sprinting*
I wonder what will happen if one does swear... *Evil face*
