Spong - XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review

Spong - I'm no XCOM vet, so coming into Enemy Unknown I had little idea of what to expect. It doesn't take long to figure out, though, that you are in control of a squad in direct confrontation with aliens. For (as is always the case with these things) you are Earth's last hope. Oh my.

Well I've just started playing it today, so it's a little early to make a final judgement, but I'm loving it so far. I'm being spoiled this week, Dishonored and this to play. Good times.

It's one of those games you can't put down easily. If it's anything like X-COM from the PS1 and PC it will eat up many hours of your time.

Anyway how's dishonored? I hear good things about it, comparing it to Deus Ex, but I'm just not seeing it just by looking at the gameplay videos. What gives?

It's excellent, and it is very much like Deus Ex, you have a lot of choice in what you can do in a mission, and with large areas to explore. It's also a lot like thief, the dialogue especially.

If you love Deus Ex/Thief/Bioshock you will love Dishonored.

Over the last two weeks, i got Borderlands 2, Dishonoured, Fifa 13, Torchlight 2 and XCOM.....spending most of the time with XCOM.....the game is a blast....and that's from a guy who isn't in strategy gaming.....In my list of RTS this gen, i would keep it above starcraft, civ and warhammer 20k....

I don't think they've done a good job with the few RTS games that were released this generation. I'm glad they finally released one with quality. Hope this sells enough to reignite the genre.

xcom is AWESOME!!

loving it, hope they do some steam workshop/mod love with it in the future, it's also pretty brutaly hard, for me at least, about 7 hours in...and I like it that way :)

dishonored is on my buy list soon as well.

kudos to both devs for making excellent games that the people are really loving.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930172d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183172d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
