... for one, it just didn't FEEL like a Sonic game anymore, but more like a platformer starring Sonic. The levels just LOOKED too different from Sonic 1 and 2...

... and I believe Sonic now had an automatic 'grab' reflex whenever he ran/jumped through something he could hang on to, which was annoying cause it meant you would want to rush through and instead he'd suddenly grab something.

Ruined the flow of the gameplay.

Also wasnt't that impressed with the soundtrack after the great Sonic 1 and 2.

I'm a little surprised that SonicCD isn't on the list.

you sure your not thinking of sonic and knuckles?
Sonic 3 was awesome.
Okay i just read the title screen says sonic 3 and
knuckles =s they were two different games though.
wahhh? lol

... I bought Sonic 3 for the Genesis/MD when it came out (I'm THAT old, yeah), cause I loved Sonic 1 and 2, but 3 just left me very unimpressed when judged as a Sonic game.

I do believe Sonic and Knuckles was even worse.

Blastoise4359d ago

Glad to see Sonic advance on this list, all 3 were really great games

The 7 Best Sonic the Hedgehog Games: Racing through Time

Sonic the Hedgehog has a long and turbulent history in videogames, but which are the best games featuring the blue bur?

Rebel_Scum78d ago

Generations over Mania? Please… Generations doesnt have any new ideas in the levels/bosses.

Also a top 7 of Sonic games shouldn’t have any 3D crap and contain at least one of the 8-bit titles.

Sonic CD getting snubbed is weird. Number 1 is definitely interchangable between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Snookies1278d ago

Nothing wrong with putting Generations over Mania. Generations had a lot more to it. Mania was just a bit too short, despite how amazing it was. They're both top-tier Sonic games though.

Profchaos78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

I don't think mania was to short given 1,2,3, knuckles were between 1 and 3 hours long.

Mania was 5 hours roughly

However i say the originals feel more repayable because they are so short

Profchaos78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The 8 bit games were pretty bad overall do you mean the 16 bit ones

Rebel_Scum78d ago

Nope. Sonic 1 & 2 on the master system were great. Dont confuse these with the game gear versions either.

Profchaos78d ago

Top 7 for me
7 cd
6 mania
5 Frontiers
4 sonic 3
3 sonic 1
2 sonic and knuckles
1 sonic 2

Sometimes I feel like the Sonic Advanced games just didn’t exist with how much it’s always forgotten 😭

Even as a Sonic fan, I didn't really care for those games, and getting the Chaos Emeralds were freakin' horrible. Even with an emulator and save states, I didn't have the desire to try. I also didn't like most of the levels or bosses either. Unfortunately, DiMPs aren't good at making Sonic games.

30 years later, Sonic 3 is still a divisive game

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is peak 2D Sonic for me. Probably my most played Genesis game.

Chocoburger81d ago

No, not a divisive game. The visuals, levels, music, controls were all great. Having to buy Sonic & Knuckles wasn't an issue at all, just more awesome gaming made available to me at the time. I lived through that era, and I don't remember anyone complaining that they had to buy another cartridge just to get the complete game, if you enjoyed Sonic games on the Genesis, you were happy to get another one back then.

The only issue with Sonic 3 is that stupid freakin' horrible "BARREL OF DOOM!" all because Sonic Team didn't properly communicate to the player what to do.

rambot8981d ago

This! This! THIS!!!

The only divisive thing about Sonic 3 was that freaking barrel.

Number1TailzFan81d ago

I had 1 & 2, I played 3 at someone else's house. When I heard about S3 & Knuckles I assumed it was the same game with just Knuckles added in and thought it was stupid, until I found out a while later it was much more. I wonder how much more they could've put onto the game carts, I know there were cut levels in some of the games.

gold_drake78d ago

is it divisive?

i think its the best 2d sonic.

Sonic Game Writers Had ‘Very Little Say’ On Story Scripts

The writing duo behind Sonic games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World reveal they have little creative control over their game scripts.

-Foxtrot98d ago

They need to start letting people take inspiration from the comics, there's a ton of great stuff to take inspiration from.

phoenixwing96d ago

My beef is why even hire writers if you're just going to control the whole process. I'd be very upset as a writer if someone did that. A job is a job though.

DarXyde96d ago

Performative for optics, I would think.

It's like the US Congress holding a vote to "denounce the evils of socialism." It literally did absolutely nothing about anything and was a complete waste of everyone's time (and tax dollars—which is its own irony, by the way)

Dumbest thing in the world, but if you hire writers, it looks like you made a serious effort to make something great.

Do you remember when the original Suicide Squad movie was coming out? How much did we hear about Killer Croc's actor watching cannibal videos to get into character? Or even the "incredible lengths" Jared Leto went through to personify Joker on and off set?

It looks better when people think you're taking it seriously.

XiNatsuDragnel97d ago

Pretty much confirmed that SEGA controls everything about sonic no derivations fr

Nothing new sonic forces was meant to be far darker then sega got cold feet and they did the same old power of friendship ending
