Well in engine means that models and assets are straight out of somethin like maya than rendered with farm of PS3s. High quality and very very high in poly count. Developers than strip down those assets, so don't get your hopes up. It will look fantastic, like UC2 and UC3 were, even better, but don't expect it to look like this. This is running in real-time.. Way you can tell is that the physics aren't perfect, and there is some clipping (e.g. Ellie's hair).

Uncharted has two types of cutscenes - one which uses in-game assets, and one which is pre-rendered running in-engine.

Pre-rendered looks better than this, and doesn't have clipping. This cutscene uses in-game assets, and was running as a script (like scripted events) ;)

Just look at the face of this girl...Just the face has probably more than 40k polygons with that kind of hair. And than shadow quality below her finger, its just more than you see in Crysis 2 ultra settings DX11(and those guys have best shadow tech out there). It's real time, pre-rendered cutscenes don't have clipping like I said before.

In-Engine means that it's running on the engine, which means it's running in real time. Both types of uncharted cutscenes were running in-engine, though one was pre-rendered from that material and one was not. The first trailer we saw was the pre-rendered type of footage. Therefore, there wasn't any clipping or frame delays.

This, on the other hand, was running in real-time, and was the second type of cutscene, as shown by animations, clipping and slightly less consistent frame rate.

And the hair? It's actually not that many polygons, arranged with textures and alpha maps to imitate density that isn't actually there, very similar to how they do it in Uncharted. There's nothing in her face that screams "Pre-Rendered" - if anything it screams "Game Assets". Look at the trees, from the top-view you can clearly see the alpha mapped polygons. That wouldn't be the case in pre-rendered footage, as trees would have actual density - there's no reason to fake it if you have a large render farm at your disposal.

Gotta say though, I'm looking forward to your reply when gameplay releases :)

Maybe you still don't understand: but clippings happen with in-engine footage even if it was pre-rendered on a server farm or if it's played in real time. This is not CGI so no matter on what quality you render the output, it's still limited to the engine capabilities.

What you need to understand is that in-engine does not mean real-time: for example, Halo 3 theater mode even lets you upload your own in-engine clips to the web, and these are being rendered on Bungie's server farm in a resolution that your console can not output in real time.

The LOU trailer is in-engine, but it was already confirmed that the engine does not play this in real time, but it's rather being pre-rendered and then played from a video.

It shouldn't come as any surprise: Uncharted games offer the exact same pre-rendered in engine cutscenes. It utilities the PS3 bluray space, it saves processing power and lets the game pre-load in the background, and it gives an amazingly looking result that the console simply can't deliver in real time. It makes more sense to do it this way.
The only disadvantages of pre-rendered cutscenes is that sometimes the difference between them and gameplay is quite big (but not as big as not in-engine CGI cutscenes), and that you can't customize the ways characters look. A game that doesn't let you see your customized character in cutscenes is a sign for pre-rendered cutscenes.

Other than that there's another easy way to figure out if a cutscene is real time or not: can you skip it in the first second it's playing and get straight to the game? If you can, then it's not a pre-rendered cutscene.

"clippings"? Clipping 'can' happen in pre-rendered and CGI footage, but it doesn't in professional productions. That's because in those types of footage, you have full control over what happens to the characters, whilst in real-time footage you're limited to the functionality of the game-engine.

There is also no reason to run a video on an engine if you're going to pre-render it. Uncharted cutscenes were of two types.

1. Pre-Rendered: Uses in-game assets, but rendered outside of the context of the engine. Instead advanced 3D animation suites were used to accomplish the task.
2. Real-Time: Using in-game assets, running on the in-game engine in real-time.

The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is the animations. Animations in the Real-Time type of cutscene are visibly lower detail than those of the pre-rendered variant (which is the main reason that they opt for pre-rendered in some cases).
Other than that - Physics, Clipping and Frame-Rate are strong indicators.

There is no way in HELL that this could be achieved even on very good PC. Sorry Shaman, Chris is talking about the high-quality pre-rendered cutscenes as shown in Uncharted 2, not the in-engine cutscenes we are talking about here.

The video in this article has a quality significantly below the quality of the cutscenes rendered using that rendering farm. There's nothing unachievable to it, and it's filled with trickery that's rather obvious to the trained eye.

And just to make it clear to you - Crysis 2 has technically better graphics than this footage. It has higher poly counts, higher resolution textures, higher-detail shaders, tessellation, better shadows, better physics and more advanced animations. It's the art-style that makes LoU stand out.

I'm sorry if I'm "borderline insulting" you, but you still don't seem to understand the difference. Let's do the basics first:

CGI cutscenes:
while technically every computer generated image counts as CGI, even realtime gameplay, the common term in videogames refers to graphics created with professional animation software such as 3DSMax or Cinema 4D. Obviously, these are always pre-rendered since you're not really running a copy of the software with all the high quality assets inside your game...
For example: Final Fantasy cutscenes, Warcraft cutscenes.

In-engine cutscenes:
Term for graphics generated from a game engine. These can be either rendered by the game engine offline and saved into a video file, or generated on the fly while the game plays. Some game engines like the new Cryengine 3 are actually on the border of a game engine and an animation software (at least they're trying to sell it as such to production studios).

Real-Time In-engine cutscenes:
These are cutscene running in the game engine, and are rendered on the fly. The only difference between these and gameplay is that you don't have any kind of control over your character. This controlled settings give the game developers the ability to maximize the potential of their engine in real time, since they know in advance how the scene is going to play out every time and there is no player intervention to account for.
Examples: Halo cutscenes, GTA cutscenes.

Pre-rendered in-engine cutscenes:
These are also rendered in the game engine and not in an independent animation software. The difference from CGI is that it's all in the game engine and no post-production touch ups are made in external software (if such touch ups are made then the scene can't really be considered in-engine anymore). But they are still pre-rendered since they are rendered in advance and dumped into a file, and then played from the file later - this is the definition of pre-rendered footage.
The difference from realtime in-engine is that these scenes are rendered using the highest settings possible with an output quality that is possible to produce in realtime on a console and sometimes not even on a server farm: Lighting, character model LOD, post processing effects, resolution - everything is dialed to the max, and the assets used are mostly not the same as you get in the game (higher polygon count for example, or specific and very complex mo-cap animations that you don't see in the game.
Examples: Uncharted cutscenes, Alan Wake cutscenes.

Why use in-engine pre-rendered cutscenes and not professional animation software if the scene is stored into a file anyway? Well, if your engine is good enough for the task, this saves you time and money, and gives a much more consistent look for the game. Games with CGI sometimes have too much of a quality drop when switching to gameplay, and here the difference is more subtle (although it still exists).

So hopefully this clears up your confusion.
Pre-rendered scene can be either CGI (external software) or in-engine. But in-engine can be either real time or pre-rendered.

Please note that I'm not saying which is better. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses, with the only relevant difference for unreleased is that real-time in-engine gives you better indication of the actual game graphics.

The LOU trailer seems to follow suite on Uncharted, which makes sense since they already have a superb engine in place and it utilizes the console strengths VS weaknesses (plenty of storage space, not so much memory).

CG? not even close. It looks about 5x's better than Uncharted 3 and the difference between this trailer and the the teaser is very noticeable.

ND's in-engine cut-scenes have a noticeable difference compared to actual gameplay. You can tell this scene is rendered in-game, it might be small cut-scene leading up to a gameplay segment.

I knew it wouldn't look as good as the pre-rendered teaser but oh well.

PS4 next year!

I agree. I think it's time to shift most of the focus to making creative, fun games that recapture some of the magic that we experienced in previous generations and still appreciate when we go back and play classic games. If people want fancier graphics, they are welcome to replay crysis 2 as many times as then want until some other "gem" comes out.
That's not to say that this gen didn't have some great games so far, but we would see more creativity if we took pressure off of devs.

Looks fantastic. Naughty Dog is definitely Sony's top developer. They seem to always get the most out of the Sony consoles, even going back to the original Crash, which used a nice cell shade technique to compensate for lack of textures.

This is looking fantastic, hope it comes out this year. Glad to see games are still pushing the current consoles to their limits and beyond.

I honestly think the next consoles might still be a couple of years away, all the games that are getting pushed back to 2013 might be dead in the water if a new console were to release around the same time.

That was a great trailer. It looked fantastic, the action was visceral and in your face like the first and the music was perfect.

Lot of people playing down the visuals but you know the in game parts will be close. Just look at Uncharted 2 and 3. And if you still want to pick holes and deny how impressive this is then you are either J-blaze or an idiotic fanboy.

Imagine what naughty dog would do on a modern high end pc that's already 2+ gens ahead of consoles in terms of horsepower. I'm sure naughty dog could run Samaritan tech demo level graphics easily on 1 gtx580 when epic needed 3 they are very good programmers.
