Why Halo Reach Is the Most Disappointing Game of the Year

It's hard for one to feel a sense of overwhelming emotional tragedy when, even during the admittedly effective ending, everything is as scenic as a tropical island tour. The island just happens to be a bit foggy sometimes.

Worst of all, Halo: Reach doesn't have any memorable moments outside of its lead into Halo: CE, and your final moments (as a nameless, numbered nobody).

That being said, I could actually understand being so totally hyped for what is, arguably, the final of the best your system has to offer. the guy clearly loves the halo franchise and is obviously quite familiar with the story, so even if he likes sony, it has NOTHING to do with it. second, the article is rather well written and the points he makes are spot on. i felt EXACTLY the same way while playing it.

i mean, come on, here we have a company (Bungie) who KNOWS this game is going to make a billion dollars and yet they gave us nothing new, nothing impressive, or amazing. they just gave us another budget title banking on the name. don't get me wrong, reach has rejuvenated my love for the halo multiplayer, and is better than ever (i play it at least 2 hours every night); but the single player is exactly what this guy said...boring. i wouldn't say you shouldn't buy this game, cuz the multiplayer carries a TON of weight, but if you're the type of person that only plays a game for the campaign, reach is a swing and a miss.

I'm a long time Halo fan and I found the story disappointing. As anyone who's read the books would know, Halo: Reach retcons at least 2 books worth of canon. It's very disappointing that they made these retcons, and the product of the retcons doesn't even justify the retcons.

I'm glad 343 has complete control over the Halo series. Hopefully they'll have better consistency than Bungie did.

NOTE: Overall Halo: Reach is a fantastic game, though like I said, I'm disappointed in it's story. It's told in a good way. The retcons make it less enjoyable for me.

I had the exact same disappointment in the campaign. The characters were uninteresting and I just didn't care about them. I'm not a big fan of the Halo universe, but some personal character interaction would have made it much more enjoyable for me. The first Halo did a decent job of that with Cortana and the Chief, even if there wasn't much character development, their interaction was interesting.

But I get why they did it this way, if you like Halo lore, you probably loved this campaign.

Completely agreed. They tried a more "human" approach with ODST and it was obviously a tryout for shaping up the characters for Reach. But hell it didn't work for me. Sorry, but when you build up a great franchise with memorable characters for 10 years and make the last game you make a prequel, I'm sorry but most of the gamers won't give a sh*t about what's gonna happen to the new characters that you choose to include into that game. We already knew how it's gonna end and a campaign like that makes it more and more unbearable. I even bought the Limited Edition so I could discover some secret things about the game's campaign/storyline, but it made me feel like I bought another MW 2 Hardened Edition.

I kind of agree but if you get into the hype and get yourself totally physced and expect something extra special you will get so disappointed and probably think its the biggest of the year.
I also kind of agree with windrex it is a great game no doubt but it got rubber-stamped before anybody even saw so much as a screen shot as GOTY in their eyes because it was Halo and it would stay that way no matter how bad it was. I see a lot of conflicting opinions here. Some of you are saying "This guy is a total PS3 fanboy because he doesn't like Halo" and others are saying "So because doesn't like the game he's a troll and/or fanboy?"

This guy's number one problem is that he expected too much from the campaign. First of all, there were plenty of "Oh, no they didn't" moments. Like in Winter Contingency, when you first arrive, you see all the cryptic evidence that something horrible has gone down. Or when you got jumped by those Zealots in the Relay Station and they dragged the marine away with them kicking and screaming?

Or Tip of the Spear, how the entire mission goes to hell, they rework their strategy, and when it seems like everything's actually going to turn out right, BAM, Super Carrier shows up. Or in Long Night of Solace. A crazy plan becomes reality, they head to space, they get things going, plans are once again disrupted, a sacrifice is made, and it seems like things are actually going to work out (again) and then BAM!! The Whole Covenant Armada shows up.

Also, let's not forget, we're playing as Spartans, for someone who's read the books, you should already know that they aren't exactly a happy-go-lucky bunch. They're trained soldiers taught to rein in and suppress any type of emotion that may hinder the success of a mission. (Halo fan right? Riiiiight ....) Halo: Reach went from small time skirmishes to outright invasion in the lattter missions, so yes, the ALIEN APOCALYPSE was right in front of your eyes.

I won't say I wasn't a bit disappointed with some parts, I could complain that we didn't get to fight any Scarabs, that Bungie didn't experiment with various Malekgolo forms (Mini Scarabs and Super Ginormous Hunters from Halo Legends), and that they didn't do an Infection Survival/Co-Op mode with actual Flood Zombies (DLC FTW).

But besides that, Halo: Reach was a VERY memorable experience. Of course, everybody is entitled to their opinions, but this guys presents his viewpoints very badly.

"Wait, who the hell is that guy? What does she do again? Where is my squad during gameplay?" That depends. That's clearly outlined in Cutscenes, they get sent different places, they stay back and send you to do the dirty work, it goes on and on. Very lame question. And all the characters are introduced over time. Kat's the tech specialist (You'd have figured that out, especially if you and your friends were so "quiet" during cinematics. Emile's the Bad-ass loner, Jun's the Chatty Sniper, and Jorge is the Kind-hearted Heavy Weapons Support. Carter should be a no brainer right off the bat.

Really, I grow tired of these "Halo" fans complaining about things and not even trying to distinctly back up what they are saying. Playing Halo CE, 2 and/or 3 doesn't make you a fan son.

Having read the books as well, I was pleased with the story in Halo: Reach. I'm not quite sure what his expectations where going in, but I suspect they may have been inflated enough to set you up for disappointment.

I came across plenty of "Oh, s#?t!" moments like the destruction of the UNSC ship in Tip of the Spear after Noble 6 et al took out the Covenant tower. I found it a great piece of foreshadowing that punctuated the contrast between effort and overall outcome. Or in Long Night of Solace, the epitome of a special op, where a desperate situation spawned a crazy idea that again, foreshadowed the endgame. (@Clizzz, I see that you and I see eye to eye on this point.)

If you're looking for Shakespeare, a video game isn't the place to look. If you're looking for strict adherence to canon set by a book, I thought we'd all learned years ago not to expect it.

The story provided just enough context to frame the action as it was with all the other Halo games or most games for that matter. That's all I expected, and with that in mind, I was pleased to find a story that gave me a little bit more.

I get the sneaking suspicion that the article was born of unrealistic expectations and a bit of hyperbole.

The polish and content of reach is unmatched. Its not even my favorite FPS, but people ragging on the SP are just grasping at straws.

Reach has the best SP since halo 1, and easily the most content and multiplayer features of any halo GAME, so in my mind its the best halo yet.

The Sp took me 12 Hours to beat on heroic(not sure if that includes all the time from me dying) and was pretty good. I hated the story of halo 2 and 3 so this was great to me. Not to mention you can play it with 4 player co-op. That alone has more value than alot of Campaign only games. Not to mention Firefight, forge and theater can all be played alone if you want.

People judge the SP in REACH more harshly than they do SP only games, simply because they are hoping to piece together some BS complaints about its weakest link.

Unfortunately for them, the weakest link in halo Reach is still stronger than the entire chains of most games.

Noone will like every game, but people can only lie to themselves when they pretend a great game is average because they don't like it.

I buy alot of "great" games, and very few of them keep me playing as long as reach already has. So although I may not like a game, I can still tell the difference between great but not for me, and average.

Seriously ... did anyone actually "feel" sorry for any of the characters in the game? Some of their deaths also came way too easy or looks like they could have avoided them. This article nails that fact. As for big moments ... games like Call of Duty have "set pieces" that give you that OH S*** moments while Halo is still the same thing over and again again as you fight drop ship after drop ship.

I like reviews like gametrailers reviews. They still gave it a very high score (9.3) but clearly stated it was mostly due to the amazing high quality multiplayer and that the single player was a drag and even boring at times.

That to me is what describes Halo Reach. You cannot deny the multiplayer greatness ... but to pretend the single player is excellent as well is a joke.

I'm disappointed that so many people hated the campaign so much. I'm niot saying if you didn't like it you're wrong; I'm not about to to call someone's personal oppinion false. Just disappointed, because personally, I thought it was great fun and the best of the Halo campaigns. I realize there wasn't a terribly huge amount of time on character developement, but I still felt enough of a connection to care about what happened to them. And I thought that the ending was one of the most effective endings I've played. Just makes me upset that I have to fight the flood later on; after the end of Reach I just anted tokick some Covie ass...

I don't think most of those people are being sincere or honest. I think what you are seeing is mostly a bunch of PS3 fanboys that want to minimize Halo Reach in any way they can. I wouldn't take it too seriously.

I like great games no matter what console they are on and Halo Reach is definitely a great game in my book. I love the campaign and the multiplayer.

Disappointing to some folks. I think many people have too high expectations driven by ads, etc. I expected less than the advertising and was satisfied with the complete product. Now would I have liked hulking bosses as demonstrated in the Vanquish demo? Yes. But I will live on. It is true that even with the different personalities influenced by custom armor, etc. in Noble Team, you still didn't give a shyt about ANY of them as they died off one by one. It was a complete disconnect emotionally for me. But I do praise the overall effort.

1. The story was decent
2. The graphics were much improved over that ODST trash.
3. The campaign was a decent length IMO.

So I can give the game a nod, it is good, but not my GOY.

to finish the fight from halo 2, 3 was a prequel to 2 and Reach is a prequel to the whole damn thing. And worst of all the creators (bungie) have left the series for good, and microsoft's collection of developers leave much to be desired (RARE,TURN 10),? Really???

Maybe it disappointed you campaign-wise, but there were way more disappointing games this year (Alien vs Predator, FFXIII, Lost Planet 2, APB...)

Halo 3 is the finale. The chronology is: Halo Reach, Halo, Halo 2, ODST, Halo 3. Note that only 1 through 3 have the Master Chief as the main character.

Story-wise it has to be disapointing. It's compared to a book - Books being a hub of detail and well planned storytelling.

Halo reach 'GAME' is for well designed multiplayer imo, and it does it well. Halo has ALWAYS done multiplayer well, weather you like the story or not.

The books tell the story very well, if your into that.

Thats going too far seeing how Conviction, Alan Wake and FFXIII came out this year.

I think Reach is a solid game, most fun I have had with Halo since Xbox 1. I haven't cared about Halo on 360 be it Halo 3 or ODST but I enjoyed Reach much more than both.

Overall, B+.

Why? I've had plenty of more fun campaign wise with MW1, MW2, and Killzone 2. I've also had plenty of more fun online with Battlefield BC2 and MW1+2 in comparison to Reach. And since those games do exist sadly as a Halo fan I'm going to say Reach is just a solid great game at best but not worthy of the high scores but also doesn't deserve to be called garbage.

PlayStation fans need to stop hating and to the 360 fans... Halo Reach looks good on paper but the experience isn't neck and neck with its competitors.

What I like the most about Reach so far is the $20 Best Buy gave me to buy it from them. I got the game and Prince of Persia Blu-ray for the same price as the game. And when I've had enough I'll go trade Reach and buy something else.

It all works out.

Have to say I kinda agree with the article. Not that it's the most disappointing game of the year, but it let me down. I too read the novel and loved it. The battles were so epic, the combat and weapons felt so realistic, and the overwhelming odds stacked against the humans created a great atmosphere of tension and grim hope for the future. There wasn't really much of that in the game. Not much impending sense of doom, just another squad based shooter in a fairly open environment.

Haha I love how all the PS3 fanatics rush into every Halo article to tell us how mediocre Halo supposedly really is. The real problem for you nutjobs is that it isn't on the PS3. If it was on the PS3 it would automatically be god's gift to gaming.

Happily I don't give a flying f*ck what any of you fantards has to say about any game. I have played Halo Reach and the campaign is very good by FPS standards. I actually got into the story and the characters. The atmosphere was also great. I loved the campaign. The multiplayer is definitely very good, but I am more of a single player kind of guy and I enjoyed the hell out of the campaign.

I havent seen much of any talk about anything ps3 on this entire thread except a few paranoid xbox only owners trying to justify your purchases. Its a good game, cool people enjoy it and will spend multiple hours playing it. I understand I spent countless hours playing Socom/COD etc...you enjoy it great, no need to put on pom poms for either side.

I liked Halo Reach but MS overhyped the hell out of this game. I enjoyed beating the game and learning what happened before the events of the first Halo game. But, I have to agree with this guy when he complains about how your squad members just disappear when you get another mission. It felt like you were doing all the work and they were just doing the easy stuff. Still, it is a good game and anyone that loves Halo will enjoy it.

I haven't commented in any halo thread or article as I have been too busy playing it. But I had to say this halo experience is the most FUN I ve had. I m not a big multiplayer fan. The kiddies normally kill it for me. But I m having great fun with a few cold ones and a couple mates. Ranking up and saving for that death animation.

As a non multiplayer gamer this has dragged me right in. Respect to bungie as their grand exit truly is their opus Magnus!

I m just waiting for black ops cus then the real halo fans will be left and some proper team play can happen.
