Interesting read.

As a previous dedicated Xbox fan I agree fully with your point of view. It appears that MS is truly betraying their hardcore fan base, targeting casual gamers, Kinect, and moving towards "entertainment" as a whole rather then the original concept of gaming hence the console. I bought a PS3 on boxing day and borrowed most of Sony's big hit exclusives from friends (Killzone, Resistance, God of War, Drake, Metal Gear Solid, etc.) and I have no hesitation in saying I regret buying my 360 to begin with. As much as I enjoy Halo, Gears, and Fable (which I've played pretty thoroughly, especially the Halo series which convinced me to buy an Xbox to begin with) I'm disappointed at MS's betrayal to its hardcore community. With only Kinect exclusive games being released since 2010, it's obvious MS is transitioning fully to casual games by the time the 720 comes out. NTM paying for Xbox Live Gold which honestly isn't that much better then the PSN, dealing with advertisements on screen at all times.

At the same time, I won't be rushing to buy a PS4 the minute it comes out, I still have some faith in MS (a waning faith but faith nonetheless) to see what they'll pull off. If it is as I feared: a console where you have to use Kinect, pay to play multiplayer, more entertainment apps, and "kinect" mainly exclusives then I definitely won't be picking up the 720.

TLDR Version:

- Disgusted at MS's apparent betrayal to hardcore fans
- Sony exclusives imo are significantly better then its 360 counterparts
- MS targeting the casual crowd
- Won't buy PS4 right away and will reserve judgement of 720 until it's officially confirmed

Nice blog. I like your assessment of MS then and now. Not really sure how I feel about the validity of it right now, so instead I'll address your 3rd gen curse.

What I feel is that the media in general really strives as much as possible to get as many hits as possible. In order to do this they are going to stir the pot. The best way to stir the pot is to go after what is most popular. How do you go after what is most popular? Well you say something bad about it. People get riled up and give the site hits.

PS4 was deserving of some of the criticism it got early in it's life. It certainly didn't deserve all the hate it got. MS was deserving of more hate than it got with the RROD or disc scratching problems, but PS3 was still the system to hate for many. One could take your David and Goliath analogy and apply it, but I think there is more to it than that. Sony came into it's 3rd gen on a 2 gen high, and it was extremely arrogant. At the same time internet use was exploding...yes it's only been about 7-8 years where the internet has been mainstream. The two coupled together gave a lot of people, who never would have said a peep before, a voice, and many of these people were apt to raise that voice. Most didn't know what they were talking about, but they were talking. It's how the internet works now, because lets face it, many people do not take the time to educate themselves on the topics they're discussing. Sony was the popular console to hate, along with Nintendo to a lesser degree, so it recieved a lot of hate.

I truly don't think that a majority of the people on here, or even at large, want these systems to fail. If they aren't interested in one, they probably couldn't care less about it. When PS1 was stomping all over Nintendo, i personally didn't care what happened to Nintendo, but I never thought they should be pushed out of the business, they were just never in my mind. Had the internet been around then, no doubt the vocal minority would have been calling for their doom.

As it was, print media didn't have the time or space to dedicate to these silly discussions, so it never became a huge issue. I've said it before...the fan boy wars of today are nothing like they were 10-20 years ago. Back then they were actually rather civil.

IF the rumors about 720 are proven true, then any subsequent hatred that comes from gamers will be well deserved.

i agree the amount of hate i already spewed will be unleashed a 100 fold if this all is true when the x720 release. not only will x720 owners not be able to discuss there purchase or there games peacfully but there wont be many of them to begin with. hold alleigence to the games and the companys that are not trying to crap up gaming.

very well put together blog it had a rhythm to it and it was thorough.if this is truly the direction MS is heading i might now be an owner of the next xbox... maybe
but if it this xbox720 turns out to prove that the rumors of always online and needs an internet connection to work then am taking my next best console option cause xbox is not it

Great read. The MS now is not the MS of 2006. Only the most hardest of hardcore fanboys will defend MS now.

Fun read thanks. I believe in the 3rd console curse, it's often the way with games as well the first one has something special, the second nails it and the third flounders a bit despite being the most polished.
