Has anyone even asked... Why no product recall?
The last thing I wonder is why has there been no FORCED recall of this item? There comes a point where government has to set a standard... I mean imagine if this was Ford or Cadillac or hell even Bissell or Black&Decker... would there be a mandatory recall on this product due to unacceptable failure rates? Also, the 3 year extended warranty does not fix the problem.

The 360's issues are in the root of the design of the motherboard. So when you send a broken one in, the parts get replaced with more faulty parts. It is not a fix, it is a PATCH to temporarily tide you over... and Microsoft hopes that you play your console a lot less (like I do) out of fear that it will break again, and it will carry you past the 3 year mark so they can drop servicing you like an atomic hot rock.

It is VERY hard for me to believe that Microsoft makes any money off the 360. But then again, they might since people accept this business practice and fund the repair of old 360s with XBL payments and the purchases of new consoles. It seems to be a perpetuating circle of death that ultimately ends with your 360 being out of warranty and dead as a brick, with no consumer rights left. And a stack full of 360 titles that you can either A) Ebay away, or B) Buy a new 360 and jump right back into the circle of console doom.

I speak like this, and I like my 360, when its working and when I am not afraid to use it (since it makes funny noises from time to time).

They offered a three year warranty and, rather than people questioning why it needed a three year warranty, everyone accepted it and Microsoft, even though it cost them $1b in repair bills, probably saved even more (the cost of a recall, replacements and R&D) because consumers are so stupid.

An absolute disgrace that after numerous revisions to the damn motherboard, the thing is still defective. Sega, Atari, Nintendo, hell, Sony, would have been ruined by it, Microsoft get away with it.

I wont make feel people guilty however I will inform people who dont know about it, and why they SHOULD invest in a warranty where as with the PS3 its not needed but cant hurt to have the warranty.

At this point anyone in denial over the 360 breaking is a blind loyal person to a company who doesnt love you, get over it

to people who think the PS3 is the most superior thing ever, I agree, in hardware, software is still sparse and a joke, esp in the online fight

In the end if you can find a reliable 360 your exp will be beyong your dreams, if you have a ps3 you will feel great knowing your system will always turn on however what you get and play can be hit or miss

Eithier way, The 360 needs a re design hardware wise, and software\marketing sony needs a rebuild
SixAmpFuze  +   1831d ago
This means nothing , you cant say that theirs a 50+ failure rate all around. The only people that know the true number are MS. 32 million xboxs and your trying to say 16 million RROD. I think the rrod WAS more like 25%. which is still bad but n o way in hell is it at 50% MS wouldnt be making any money and it would have cost more than 1 billion to fix 16 millino consoles so Game informer go survey 32 millino people then comeback with results. Also How did they take the survey by making check marks in the magazine or online. Did they phone people. EW

@SixAmpFuze - The Numbers are probably closer than You'd like.
Listen, I tell you this with zero hostility. The biggest question YOU should ask is "Why has Microsoft not released their own factual 360 failure percentages/rates?"
The answer, it is in their best interest NOT to disclose bad information to the public. Because it would directly or eventually affect their reputation and sales, and no matter how bad people think it may be now... Microsoft would PROBABLY be the only company on the PLANET who had a mass distributed product with a failure rate of plus 40 percent (God forbid if it actually is 50% or more).

I mean, Microsoft could cut to the chase right? Nope, because their books are probably in such a mess, that it would take the best lawyers a decade to decipher and compile a case worth having - after they try to sort out the sales vs. returns vs. warranty vs. cost vs initial failure rates vs. quality control vs. the fact that Microsoft willingly sold ME and YOU a defective product.

The fact that many feel the NEED to buy a 3rd party warranty in order to feel safe to game is ridiculous. And why is 50% such a ridiculous figure when I have SEVERAL friends who have a personal 75% failure rate... and a few with 66%, I have had the best luck of us all and I am sitting pretty at 50%. You'd better thank God that it wasn't only me and my pals sampled, because the report woulda been a lot worse!

But we are all smart enough to know that the world doesn't only consist of US, the same way that those who are lucky enough to have a nice working launch console should know they do not encapsulate the world either. Regardless of your personal feelings and experience... you must retain the ability to empathize with other gamers to know what THEY are going through.

1. It is a problem that Microsoft needs to own up to, to ensure that the quality of My and YOUR OWN gaming experience continues to move in a positive direction.

2. This cannot be accepted as a business standard in ANY company or a result of ANY paid service. (Imagine if you went to Wendys and your order was incorrect 50% of the time, or your burger was consistantly 50% raw... or is a 33% raw burger just ok with you?) We cannot accept half-baked consoles either that are unreliable... would you eat at an unreliable restaurant? Nope.

3. Attempt to be pro gamer, and pro consumer... brand loyalty does not excuse blind ignorance to ANY product from ANY company. At some point, we all take a chance on products - whether if it is a cleaning item advertised to do a task, or a walkman that does/doesn't have the kind of bass or sound coming from the headphones that you've expected. But for most folks, the more expensive the item, the hotter the burn... don't support the flame that burns away out hard earned dollars.

The truth is out, let us accept it, and call for a PERMANENT FIX.(Or a SIGNIFICANT discount on the Xbox 720 - kinda like the Vista/Windows 7 exchange program.)

I agree with you on many points i just dont see how a mag that " surveys" 5000 people can say ITS 54%. If you were to survey me on my ps1 and ps2 hardware failures I could tell you that my 4 ps2's all DRE and my 3 ps1's DRE. But I dotn think 50% of all ps2's had dre problems even tho I believe the ps2 problems were extremely bad and their were no paybacks to consumers. My launch 360 just rrod on me 2 months ago so Once again I do believe the figure is high 25%-30% but not in the 40% or 50's

that's a lie
it's more like 100%; all of my boys that has/had a 360 had to either get it re-furbished, or replaced one or more times. I myself had one, it broke, repaired it, and I sold it ... its sad, they said they fixed it, but I don't see a solid fix no where ... it's frustrating.
Socomer 1979  +   1831d ago

you sony fanatics are something else.

wanna know why we still support it? cause micro covers the repair at no cost to us, when will you ppl understand that?

i could just imagine how many sony fanatics lied on that survey..

i would much rather be in the 54% failure rate with a good warranty than in a 10% and no warranty but hey thats just me...
frnkyl  +   1831d ago
You make a fair point, but on the other hand which isn't likely, maybe most of the people who voted really did have their 360s break. About the warranty, I think it's people's preference, some people will like that it's there and not care if the console breaks, some people won't like their consoles to break in the first place.
air1  +   1831d ago
hey maybe it is 54% lets just say it is while i can understand that no one wants their console to break but if it does its a free fix. yea maybe you have to stay on the phone for some time and wait for the fix when sent out .

would it make you feel better if your ps3 ylod'd on you as long as its only 10%? i know i didnt like it believe it or not i got the ylod and had to pay when i only had it for like 7 months.

this is reality sh!t happens if it was sony i still wouldnt jump ship just casue i love to game i wouldnt want either one to go just so that i can have a much better variety.

all im saying is that at the very least micro took the hit for there mistake, something sony is not known to do, dre anyone?? but i know i know it wasnt as high of a failure rate.

if you ask me ibm did it to micro they didnt admit it in the book but they did say that they didnt like it at first cause sony started with them first. you should read that book. "bing" it ;)

You sir belong at the circus, because you are one of the biggest clowns on the internet.

I cant believe the nonsense that is spewed from your unintelligent blinded fanboy mouths.

55% failure rate is not acceptable, no matter how long the warranty is.

I don't care if Microsoft was forced to give a 10 year warranty, it still does not take away from the fact that the 360 is the worst made hardware in the history of consumer electronics.

A longer warranty is NOT A FIX.

There is no excuse for a 55% failure rate.
air1  +   1831d ago
and who the fvck are you to say what is acceptable and what isnt? what fvcking high horse you think you are on?

wtf is unintelligent? that i dont have to pay for rrod and i had to pay for ylod? what should i feel better cause i was only apart of a 10%? fvcking moron...

a longer warranty is not a fix you are right. it is long enough till there is a fix if this sh!t was even real, we are talking about a poll from a magazine here, i think i would need more then just that to tell me that the failure is at 55%.

now why dont you build a bridge and get over the fact that to this day the ps3 is in, well you know..

all i know is that sony better pray they never fvck up cause clowns like this jump ship quick.

Hey air, wattup dude ?
Please stop with your lying, if your PS3 YLOD'ed within your 1 year warranty period, Sony will fix it for you for free, usually the shipping method is UPS, my neighbour experienced this, he asked me if he did something wrong and I told him just contact Sony and then 2 days later an empty box was sent by UPS, all he gotta do is send only the PS3 console, no cable no nothing and then a week later he got back his PS3 in good working condition. You must have mess around with the seal, that's why Sony charged you....or it never even happened, hard to tell with your clear bias toward your saviour company that is M$.
On topic, let's wrap this around your little head: Does a 3 years warranty on a gaming console looks natural to you ? M$ just did that out of the goodness in their corporate heart ? Not to avoid the flood of lawsuits ? Not to avoid recall ? Well, believe what you want to believe, but PS3 and Wii is much more reliable than 360, no one on Earth can spin this. Good day to you sir
air1  +   1830d ago
i never opened it, but i guess i had it for a year and 1 day :(

look sony fanatics we all get it a 3 year warranty doesnt look natural, they did it so that they would avoid law suits, recalls etc. regardless its fvcking free damn, we all know this. what better way to say im sorry then offering a free fix? wtf you ppl need to stop acting like you are buying your mother back from micro or something.

there is no spinning that the 360 has a high failure rate. but dont act all ignorant like if micro didnt step up. they fvcked up, if you ask me ibm had something to do with it, but what would you know. yes the system is flawed we know that but it has great games and yu ppl act as if you cant game for months and sh!t over rrod.. see if you just had both consoles you would just get over this issue..

but you ride on the high horse, mr.ego..
JYstiq808  +   1830d ago
You bought a ps3 and never opened it for a year, and 1 day and then you say it YLOD on you? Haha your so delusional it's funny. Don't get mad because 360's failure rate being high IS A FACT. Just keep it up with your brain-washed comments, I find them entertaining to read.

And we will have another article bchn and whining about the same subject next week. Like it has for years. Got anything else?
darkride66  +   1830d ago
Perhaps this wouldn't be such an issue if it was fixed rather then postponed.
I, for one, having suffered through 3 console returns on my 4th 360 would much rather have a product that didn't break down rather then a 3 year warranty. Oh wait...I do have that! My PS3!

The point is we keep hearing about this because it's still an issue. Bury your head in the sand if you want to, but it's a huge pain in the ass and probably the reason why the PS3 since it launched sold 23 million consoles at a higher price point in it's first 2 1/2 years versus the 360's 19 million consoles in it's first 2 1/2 years. If Microsoft had fixed the problem they'd be selling millions more then they are now because the 360 is an excellent console...when it's working. There's no way it should be still be outsold by the Wii despite being cheaper. The 360 is 10 times the games console the Wii is.

The 360 sells more?
Are you talking about 2007? No..no that can't be right. The PS3 and 360 sold neck and neck in 2007. 2008? No..again they came out to a tie. You must then be talking about 2009 then, right? Let's check those numbers. Actually, the 360 is outselling the PS3...by 190,000 consoles for the first half of the year...so they're still neck and neck despite the PS3 being twice the price.
"& factually actually 360 still sells more"
Did you mean in the US? Where you talking about just one month? Because the numbers don't seem to back you up over the long run. Actually, "factually" the PS3 is selling more units considering the time each has been on the market.

Oh...wait! You probably mean the 360 was outselling for that year that it had no next gen competition! That's true. Sorry...my mistake!

I don't think playing the system to long is the problem when it comes to 360, I only got about 45 or 50 hours out of only one of the 4 360's I own. My PS3 I played over 50 hours (I mean total, not by day) an I even play 360 an PS3 24/7 an my PS3 hasn't die but my 360 act up but now RROD.

I'm so luck at not getting RROD but not lucky at keeping it alive -_- but in the same time I got NES an alot of old systems to fall back on.

@NaiNaiNai

Yeah but the only systems that are really dieing out are the lunch ones, which isn't a shock in most ways an you can't put that next to the 360. Why? Because 360 had a good time to get things fix but notthing has been and Sony has already fix it an add a fan to push the heat out (Which is the only one I tell people to buy) if it has a fan, then buy it.

Then again their is some people that buy a 360 or PS3 that just don't even take care of their systems, I see people bring in a Elite that was full of dust (But it is a great system they say)yeah -_- only if you take care of it and same happen with PS3's and I seen my friend at GameStop tell a kid no on selling his PS3 because it was pack full of dust.

i have owned three xbox 360's none of which have gotten the RROD, the first one i gave to my brother and it still works to this day, and was purchased the first month the xbox 360 was out. the other two i have are elites and i have one for my son and one for me which get used endlessly, and i still have had no failure. now on a side note i also have a wii and a ps3 and neither of those have failed either yet. My ps3 suffers from some network issues every now and then but its easy enough to get around, just reset the modem and router and i'm good to go. but these since i've never seen this problem and have owned three and all my friends who've owned them haven't had any issues either i'm inclined to believe these numbers are bogus, but i'm not tryin to start any argument i'm just saying it seems to me these numbers are bogus. wonder what is the cause of all this RROD stuff, is it just players who don't know how to keep their electronics in open cool places? who knows i welcome replies but would like to not be trashed just because i've never had this problem.
Shendow  +   1831d ago
Well
Well two things the numbers came from (Just a guess)

1. People that couldn't take care of their system an think Microsoft is at fault.

2. 360 does have a big fail rate and Microsoft doesn't want to give a real number because it hurts business.

So far my problems have been hardware an not RROD, I only really use 360 for Halo.

That is a crazy # of failures. If anywhere close to that, it is a sad statement for product quality these days, and it is taking advantage of consumers that really get addicted to these electronic devices. Of course people are gonna buy another one when the last one dies, because they have several hundred or even thousands of dollars invested in games for a specific platform. My PS3 is about 18 months old, and it just died on me a few days ago. Regardless whether paying to fix it, or buying a new one, I will have to because of my game library.

It is irritating, because back in the day, I would buy electronics & they would last until I threw them away for being too obsolete. Nowadays, you are glad if something lasts two years.
