Not to sound like Anita S. but the damsel in distress really is a trope in a frightening number of games.

I've never really understood why there's so much negative sentiment about Sarkesiesladlkjaesd. I watched her videos on gaming. She made valid points and articulated them well.

...

What bothers me, personally, about the damsel trope isn't so much that it's so common, but rather that it's too commonly (read: almost exclusively) used as the SOLE characteristic of female characters. Many of the best female characters in gaming have been "damsels" to one degree or another (Yuna from FFX leaps to mind immediately)... but it doesn't really bother anyone because they have an actual personality and relevance beyond whatever brief flirtation with the tired trope.

The only trope I universally loathe is the "ultimate evil final boss." You know the one--no character, no personality, no motivation; just the physical manifestation of "evil."

I got so pissed off in Dragon Quest VIII when they did that. All the more so considering it usurped the role of Marcello, who I consider--to this day--to be one of the absolute greatest villains ever conceived.

You just KNOW every time you start up a Final Fantasy or Dragon Age or whatever that the final boss is going to be a randomly evil monster thing. Every goddamn time, no matter how rich or promising the settings or other antagonists are.

Not so sure if you can really use Halo: CE as a reasonable example of a modern cliché… I mean, it's 13 years old - that's older than a large number of people who will probably be reading this comment. If you have to go that far back to find an example of a cliché, you should probably look for it in an alternate source.

Been keeping my eye on this game for a while but never took the plunge and bought it because it seems to get a lot of stick from the community that the devs are all talk and no action. They’ve been promising an awful lot but not actually releasing anything new so maybe an easy way out??
