They already made a small demo...called OBLIVIAN! How much more evidence do you need to expect this game will be incredible. Bethesda and Hines have the ultimate proof in oblivion, which for the amount of time I played it cost me less than 50 cents an hour. This is one game that I trust to be entertaining, much like GTA4, all one needs to do is look at prior work for the equity this game requires.
Actually, while Oblivion was a good game, it's what has made people worried about Fallout 3 and is the only thing against F3 because it was a really simplified and shallow RPG compared to previous games in Elder Scrolls series and way more easier and less complex than original Fallouts.
Fallout 3 has a completely different strategy, theme and gameplay to Oblivion's and to make a good and successful Fallout 3, Bethesda needs to distance itself from Oblibion as much as possible.
Good move... The guys at NMA and Duck and Cover would shred the thing at give it tons of negative press. They're not happy with the way this game is going. Although to be fair the only thing they'd be satisfied with is Fallout 2.5 (2D, sprite based isometric gameplay).
At least they stated why there won't be one. A demo is meant to be a "demonstration" of what the game's capable of. Understandable, given the nature of the game.
Still, it's disappointing that you won't be able to "try before you buy".
* Xtard Mode* No Fallout 3 Demo??!! Microsoft and XboxLive is trash!!! Can't even get a demo!?? GOSH!!! Fawkin Microsoft and XboxLive fault, WAAAAAAHHHH WAAAHHHHH WAAHHHHHH!!!! HALO 3!!!!
Lots of games are starting to go the no demo route, as more and more research is saying this isn't the best way to sell a game, especially if it's not a well excuted demo.
there are developers who need no demo because their reputation talks wonders.

To compensate, they should release some good footage of actual gameplay (no cut-scenes, or very little).
