Justifying the existence of the Wii U Gamepad, and why the device already speaks for itself

The Gamepad seems like an albatross around the Wii U's neck. Many games don't see the appeal in a big bulky controller with a touch screen in the middle. Many Wii owners loved the Wii Mote for its intuitive and ease of use. And so a dual analogue, big bulky, touch screened controller is the opposite of appealing for them.

Unless Nintendo makes a Gamepad lite or the best case scenario, make it optional for consumers, I don't see it becoming mainstream. Hell most games on Wii U can be played without the Gamepad at all. And for fps' I'd rather use Wii Remote controls anyway. And for Fighting games I'd rather play with the Pro Controller.

Drop the Gamepad.

". Many Wii owners loved the Wii Mote for its intuitive and ease of use. "

Eh, many also hated it for the waggle fest that it portrait.

The screen on the gamepad is simply an extra and if it can leverage certain elements ( such as realtime menus and splitscreen without actually splitting the screen on your tv ) I really don't see why people are even complaining about it.

"And for Fighting games I'd rather play with the Pro Controller. "

Then us your wii-mote and pro controller.
Telling them to drop the gamepad is just nonsensical. The whole premise of the console IS the gamepad. Their whole marketing revolves around it. Some games won't even function without it.

I really don't get why people like you think that by dropping the gamepad they will suddenly appeal to more people. Even Though the console supports wii-mote and pro-controls.

Dropping the gamepad would only confuse people.

Already confuses people lol.

"The whole premise of the console IS the gamepad. Their whole marketing revolves around it. Some games won't even function without it."

And therein lies the problem. It is obvious the Gamepad isn't resonating with the Market like the Wii Mote did/does.

so no gamepad is better than any? i see it as a giant DS... it allows me to check my map/health/fool about with inventory in real time, without me pausing and breaking the flow. That's a great thing to have on a console. There's a wealth of control options available for the console, but i think a gamepad-centric game like Deus Ex would work beautifully.
Look up what the Armikrog team has conceptualized for the gamepad, interesting stuff.
In my opinion it's better than the wiimote by a mile, but in many ways it's in the same situation, it needs the right game (Like Prime 3 or LOZ:SS) to tap its potential.

Exactly my thoughts. People continue to say "No dev knows how to use the second screen, I don't even think Nintendo knows." Nintendo and Devs have been doing it for years now on the DS and 3DS and now the WiiU. Personally I'd be happy to reduce the screen clutter down to the gamepad. Screen clutter = less immersive for me.

I think the main appeal of the gamepad is that A) it's super comfortable, and B) it allows a home-console to double as a handheld, which is incredibly cool. Sure, it's not really any more "innovative" than the DS, but the added functionality of the thing just makes it a fantastic tool IMHO.

Nah, the gamepad rocks. I love using it, the only thing I don't like is the battery life. Otherwise it's an awesomely unique piece of hardware for a home gaming console. Let's wait and see how game development evolves around it before jumping to any conclusions.

"it’s very clear what the Gamepad is best at offering: Streamlined menu navigation, off-TV play, cleaner TV-screen presentation, and proper splitscreen multiplayer. These are the pillars on which the Wii U’s merit stands– not on some one-off novel experience akin to the Wii’s Skyward Sword or Wii Sports. Here are four features that, when implemented, unequivocally and irrefutably improve a gameplay experience in the most basic of ways."
Well said!

I don't mind the gamepad but i prefer the pro controller and it's useful if for the of tv functions but i'm a controller kind of guy.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga3d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas3d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
