Still uses batteries...
Abriael  +   921d ago
I'm sure some would be surprised by the fact that that is one of my main gripes... it basically is only justified by the need to sell the play and charge kit.
Alexious  +   921d ago
If that was the only gripe we would be pretty much set!
Abriael  +   921d ago
@Alexious: I didn't say the "only" one lol, just one of them :D

You've got to be joking right? Are they actually going to release the new controller with batteries required? This is too funny. Hahahahah.

It's 2013 and you have a major in engineering and you work for Microsoft, one of the leading electronic giants of the entire planet and you design a controller that requires batteries... Someone tell me what's wrong with this picture.

@booni3 & casualgamer
uh....what doesnt use batteries these days? I mean if its built in or replaceable...they are both batteries.

Lets run down the list of controllers and their batteries...

Wii: AA or rechargeable pack
WiiU: rechargeable and replaceable
PS3: rechargeable and...replaceable?
PS4: rechargeable and...replaceable?
360: AA or rechargeable pack
X1: rechargeable and replaceable

the reason for the "?" on the PS3 and PS4 is we know there are replacement batteries available but it isnt the easiest controller to replace the battery in. it requires you to disassemble it unlike the Wii-u and their battery compartment on the bottom of the gamepad.

User replaceable batteries is a good thing especially if the process is easy. Now the question is what is the price of these replaceable batteries?

@darthv72 Not sure if serious... but...

1. Built in batteries are rechargeable through USB port

2. Physical batteries are costly, when you consider the fact that you have to purchase new ones all the time

3. When the power is used from rechargeable batteries you only have to plugin a USB cable to continue playing

4. When the power is used from traditional batteries you have to either buy new ones or look for existing ones in the house before you can continue to play

5. Rechargeable batteries isn't dependent on the constant manufacturing on traditional batteries

6. Constant manufacturing of traditional batteries are a big energy problem

You'd think that these things would be pretty obvious considering it's 2013... but hey, i guess people still live under rocks.. must be quite comfy under those rocks.
darthv72  +   921d ago
but......rechargeable batteries can only be charged so many times. they are not indefinite and do need to be replaced at some point.

that is why the option of easy to replace is a good thing. We have heard about people worried that when their PS3 controller no longer holds a charge that they have to go buy another one. We know the battery is replaceable...its just not as 'easily' replaceable as the way nintendo did it with the gamepad.

There was a shot of the X1 controller and while it showed a battery compartment, it also showed what looked like a rechargeable battery inside. It didnt look like the typical two double A style but rectangular in nature. At first i thought it was a 9v of all things but it could have been a special pack made specifically for that controller.

As far as plugging them in to charge...that really has nothing to do with the topic. That is just the way you would put power INTO the battery but doesnt negate the fact that all of these devices use...wait for it...

My DS3 for PS3 is from back in 2007 when it launched. I get over 15 hours before the light goes out on the remote. That's about 5 regular playsessions before i have to recharge it through USB.... that's after 6 years. I don't worry about the built in battery of the DS3, never have.

It's so stupid to have to buy new batteries all the time just to continue play your game. If it's true that Xbox one remote requires you to always buy new batteries, i think it's mindnumbingly stupid.
kneon  +   921d ago

What you are saying about rechargeable batteries is true, but with controllers it takes so long to kill the battery that the fact that you need to remove a few screws to replace it is a non-issue.

I have 6 DS3's and not one needs a new battery yet.
davez82  +   921d ago
Having a detachable battery is bad design, it adds weight to the controller and makes for a less dependable battery than if the battery was designed for the controller.
The Great Melon  +   921d ago
I would be happy with that if they bundled it with rechargeable batteries. Best of both worlds even if they are a bit larger than normal rectangular lithium ion batteries that are placed in electronics.

Pffft. I'll be honest when I first saw the console it did remind me of a VCR.
Abriael  +   921d ago
It does, actually more than a VCR it looks like a betacam recorder to me.
Nevers  +   921d ago
The old skool top loading Betamax machines... not even VHS. I half expected to see NEC tacked on the box somewhere.

I wouldn't count out the Xbox One though, Microsoft have built quite a loyal fanbase thanks to the xbox 360, especially in the U.S. I would say to think of what the Wii was before it launched, everybody was making fun of it, yet look at how much it sold, however, I don't really see any innovation or special new IPs going for the Xbox One.
cell989  +   920d ago
Its hard to imagine but believe it or not some XBOTS are really hard headed and they still believe at this point that xbox is the better console for games
MrCrimson  +   921d ago
Cable box. Looks just like a cable box, even hooks up to one.
Ozmoses  +   921d ago
I wouldn't want to put my TV through that experience.. Xbox one is forbidden in my home.

I wouldn't be surprised if people still buy this thing in drives. I mean the Xbox crowd was knowingly buying faulty hardware last generation over and over again. This one probably works.

NEVER underestimate the depths of human stupidity!
MilkMan  +   921d ago
Gotta say, believe it or not, not ALL gamers are informed or stay on top of things. They'd rather talk to their local Gamestop employee and get the news from them and you know how that can be.

Sony should spread the word with proper Marketing.

people need to remember new consoles need to be big and have room for all the chips and processors, its pretty much a PC I dont mind it looking like a VCR as long as it dose not over heat I don't care, i would rather it looked like that than a huge rounded out of place machine that would look out of place in my living room, I think the xbox one has style and will fit nicely with most ppls home set ups, and remember give it a few years and they will slim it down look at the redesign they did with the 360. ps3 release console was huge shiny and ugly, the 2nd release I really liked slimed down but still had all the touch buttons was a nice redesign, however the 3rd release is so plastic and cheep looking as they took away the touch buttons and the drive and replaced it with a cheap slide on top. lets wait and see what the ps4 looks like, im sure it will be big as well it has to be if its as powerful or more powerful than xbox one, if ppl want a small console then go buy a wii u which is so outdated in tec.
Nicholasgliss  +   921d ago
I'm going back to the original Xbox One! It has a hard drive built-in with online gameplay!
Nicholasgliss  +   921d ago
What's with all the new consoles being black? Nothing wrong with black but I'd prefer old-school beige. Heck, bring back the wood grain baby!
