“I will never work on a first-person shooter game, ever again,” says veteran dev

SWAT, MAG and SOCOM veteran Charles N Cox has sworn off first-person shooters, admitting that it may be a career-limiting movie but affirming his belief that the games industry “is ready to do better things”.

I hope game dev's see the comments you guys are making, because I am freaking sick of FPS games. Not saying they need to be annihilated, but we need to cut the fat, maybe a 75% reduction of FPS games.

booni34015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

I agree wholeheartedly. I don't even play FPS titles (save for the BioShock games which are single player), though I won't rain on anyone's parade. There are lots of wonderful games that aren't shooters out or coming out, but players may want to observe a handheld console to get the full scope. The 3DS is on fire and the Vita is picking up slack too (the Soul Sacrifice demo is pretty much crack). Sure there are megatons of shooters out, but if you look hard enough you'll find brilliant games from other genres.

Everybody go buy Persona 4: Arena. Do it now. You know you want to.

Damn what's with all the disagrees? What's so wierd about what I said? The article is about a DEVELOPER who is sick of FPS games. So that's why I said I hope that more DEVELOPERS see your comments so that they will see how tired people are of the overabundance of FPS games. I'm just stating my opinion. Don't like it? Then state why. Even still, it doesn't take away from my ability to form my own opinions.

I agree and disagree. We need to end or limit the corridor simplistic fps generic bullshit games. But, we need to support games like bioshock, dishonored, half life and thief. Maybe not pure shooters but there r damn good games that r from fps perspective.

Donnieboi4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

@Joab: Of course, I meant mostly stupid COD clones and games that are FPS games but never really add anything to the genre (aim, shoot: that's it--if i'm good at one (and I am very good at FPS games) then I pretty much master every new one because they are all very similar, with a few knacks to figure out between each "new" release). Of course Bioshock, Half-life, Thief (the new Thief is my most anticipated ps4 game), Metroid Prime series, etc are still great. I thought that went without saying.

Maybe we can have more 3rd person games for MP, like Metal Gear Online or Uncharted Online.

But I still like some tradition fps MP shooters like BF 3 (which has new idea's like destructable environments, flight, parachutes, tanks, enemy-spotting, etc) and am looking forward to Bungie's DESTINY, but I just don't care for the fact that so many devs are focused on FPS games in general. My beef is not with the FPS first person PERSPECTIVE/view-point/camera angle, it is with the lack of innovation in the genre.

Edit: @ Joab: I didn't disagree with your comment btw, I agreed.

Just reading the title of this article makes me nauseous.

BattleAxe4015d ago

Well if this guy had anything to do with SOCOM4, then I hope he never works on another shooter again either, absolutely disgraceful.

Irishguy954015d ago

Yet people keep praising the new Killzone...which is a closer to Cod than any other game.

trenso14015d ago

wait hold on thief is going to be in fps...-_- i was hoping third person

TechnicianTed4015d ago

@trenso1

Umm, the series has always been in first person. Have you actually played Thief before?

UnholyLight4015d ago

@irishguy95

You kidding me, I don't own a PS3 but I've played a lot of Killzone over the years with my best buddy who always had PS2 and PS3 so I was always playin it with him.

Clearly you've never played Killzone before as it is as much of a copy of CoD as Smartcar is to a Ferrari.

The two are totally unrelated save for the fact that they are both FPS and have a single player and multiplayer component.

Winter47th4015d ago

The last SOCOM made me not want to play another shooter for the rest of my life.

4Sh0w4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

@Donnieboi, I disagree I don't think devs need to stop making FPS games or any type of games as long as gamers buy them, as for the gamers who are "sick of FPS" games then they have the free will to avoid them and buy what they like, I mean even with all the tons of FPS, a few good but most I admittedly don't like there are still mountains of other types of great games. Whats more offensive to me is this sense of entitlement that some have that ALL games, every game should be made to cater to their likes, some like my little cousins, kids, older folks like games too, not to mention all sorts of other casual/hardcore gamers that from time to time just want some mindless pick up and play game or uncomplicated game, should they not be allowed to enjoy some random shooter like lets say Bulletstorm because in their eyes its just for FUN?

Seems to me you are implying that the only games that are worthy are the ones YOU approve of.

Ya, I am sick of the FPS genre as well, and having been playing it since its conception, I've put more hours into it than most.

Games in general are starting to bore the shit out of me. Minecraft is probably the only unique thing to really interest me in the 5 years.

good, now bring the older style difficult socom back. look the real socom fans are a different breed of gamer, feed us a real socom and we will eat it

TrevorPhillips4015d ago

There are way too much FPS games, we need something different :)

The_KELRaTH4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

Don't disagree but some of the root issues are with the console controller. There needs to be proper support for mouse/trackball/touchpad & keyboard to allow for more strategy games like Command & Conquer series as well a opening up to a wider range of fps games such as the much faster "twitch" fps games.

humbleopinion4015d ago

First Person games are quite different from each other already: Battlefield and COD spawned a few military shooter clones (class based and non class based) but most don't get close to their high bar and we're not forced to play them.
In the meantime, Halo offers a completely unique experience that is nothing like these military shooters (or Tribes, if once again you wish to opt-out for a class based game).
Borderlands takes a completely different approach as a co-op fps/rpg hybrid and once again offers something different and fresh.
Far Cry also takes you in a different path, that of a completely open-world shooter, and while its half-sibling Crysis is not really open world it also offers some unique traits thanks to the implementation of the suite abilities.
And games like Dishonored and Portal stride ever more further away and while being first-person they can't even be called shooters. The variety is great.

Detoxx4015d ago

Just be yourself and you might make an awesome game, look at SOCOM

DragonKnight4015d ago

Amen to this. Hopefully more devs will follow suit and we can put an end to this emphasis on shooters.
